FontBook corrupted ? adding back Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled

Hi everyone,
similar to many other people i got some of my fonts screw up after MS Office installation.
I tried to restore default fonts in FontBook, but it claimed that some fonts are missing.
There are no fonts in my ~/Library folders: Fonts, Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled.
However, there some in /Library: Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled which I would like to bring back.
So the question is - how to do it?
In /Library/Fonts Disabled   i see Arial, Timew New Roman, Verdana, Wingdings. I guess all of them were disabled by MS installation
and then replaced by MS versions.
My FontBook however does not show me those (e.g. I see no Times New Roman at all, so I can't re-enable it).
I suppose FontBook database is corrupted, so I should restart with Shift in safe mode and then FontBook should be fine, right?
What do I do with /Library/Fonts (Removed)  to bring in back in a propper way? Will FontBook also be able to see those and propose their restoration?
I would appreciate if someone could say with confidence what to do step by step to add Fonts (Removed) and Fonts Disabled back in use. I don't have a TimeMachine running (yet, plan to do it soon), and I use Mac for work, so i would prefare to minimize risks of messing the whole thing up myself
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Denis.

My 2¢
Goto Versiontracker.com and download "Linotype FontExplorer X"
Move your Font Book preferences from your (Library/Preferences) folder and then make an archive of Font Book (Control-click, create archive in the Finder)
Delete the original.
Now, install/launch FontExplorer X.
There is an option to clean font caches during install - do that and your Mac will reboot.
Now, there is an option under the tools menu in FontExplorer X that sets your system font folders back to defaults - do that.
You should be good to go. FontExplorer X is free and an excellent font manager.
If you have any questions, post back.

  • Can I set Fontbook to NOT alert me when fonts are "corrupted?"

I just installed Leopard and I am having this problem where every time I open an app like "InDesign," "Photoshop," or "Word" i get these "font corrupted" messages from fontbook. I have used these fonts before (and they seem fine) and they did not get the "font corrupted" message in OSX 10.4. I cannot quit the apps until I have finished clicking "OK" to all the error pop up's. I can "force quit" but it still will not completely quit the app until I click the "OK" for ALL the pop ups.
Is there a way to turn these notifications off?
Should I trust Fontbook entirely on their corruption alerts and delete the fonts from my system?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Anyway to reset back to factory fonts with fontbook?

ok i have OS 10.5.4 and I am having some trouble with fonts I added fonts a while back with font book and now my Microsoft word will not start it wants to look at every font and tell me i should delete it. any way around this or any way to get rid of the fonts that i put on with font book?

    Hey there,
Linotype FontExplorer X has a menu item for restoring your font library to its default state. You can re‑import any or all extra fonts into Font Explorer's library afterwards, eliminate any conflicts you may come across, and activate them whenever you wish. The link to its download page is provided below. Hope this helps.

  • Font Book won't remove font files

I've been doing some testing with Font Book in hopes to replace Suitcase for font management. I've been testing on OS X 10.4.5 with Font Book 2.0.2.
I have FB prefs setup with User as the default install location. Getting fonts installed works fine. To simplify for testing I'm just using one source folder with one family of fonts in it. So I drag the source folder into the FB window where I have created a collection called Temp.
The font files are copied into ~/Library/Fonts, just as they should be, and are now available to the system. When I select the font family in FB and choose Remove Font, it disappears from FB, however the font files remain in ~/Library/Fonts.
According to all documentation I've read, that is not the expected behavior. When Remove Fonts is used within FB, the font files should be moved to the trash.
In addition, since the font files are being left in ~/Library/Fonts, if I try to add the same source folder back into FB, nothing happens, they just simply do not load. If I manually remove the lingering fonts from ~/Library/Fonts I am then able to add the source folder again.
So it appears that FB is not functioning as advertised. I've confirmed this on two separate machines running 10.4.5 and also with one running 10.3.9.
Any ideas what's up or am I missing something here?

"When I select the font family in FB and choose Remove Font, it disappears from FB, however the font files remain in ~/Library/Fonts.
Where are you selecting the font, from within the "All Fonts" collection, or within the "Temp" collection? If you've selected it from within your Temp collection, "Remove" only removes the font from the collection, not from your installed fonts. To remove the fonts from your installed fonts, you need to select them from within the All Fonts collection.
I think what you might want to do rather than create a collection is to create an actual "Temporary" font library. In Font Book, select the All Fonts collection so that the focus is in the leftmost column and choose "New Library" from the action menu. Name it "Temporary" (or whatever else you'd like) and then hit enter. Notice it's listed above the dividing line which separates libraries on the top with collections on the bottom. Now, drag your folder of fonts from the Finder onto the "Temporary" library icon in Font Book. NOTE: A reference to the fonts will be added to Font Book; the fonts themselves are not copied but remain where they are in the Finder and are activated or deactivated from there. Now, whether you select the fonts from within the All Fonts library or the Temporary library, the "Remove" command will remove the fonts from Font Book. (Since the fonts remained in their original location, when they're removed from Font Book they're not moved to the Trash; rather, the reference to them is simply removed from Font Book).
    Hope this helps....

Here's a positive thing: Windows viruses can't run on OS X, but they can be transferred from OS X to other PCs (only if you have them on the OS X volume).

  • Font book not disabling / deactivating fonts

Most of my fonts (1000+) are currently disabled in Font Book, but they still show up in the font menus in the applications I run (Photoshop, Adium, Omnigraffle, Mail.app, etc.).
Why don't my applications just reflect the list of fonts I have enabled in Font Book?
Possibly related: After I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, all of my fonts were enabled. I subsequently went into Font Book and disabled most of them (which is how I had things in Tiger).

I posted this below, but never had any replies or answers, I have since spoke to someone at the apple store who says:
I should not have them in my user/library/fonts, so now I only have them in HD/library/fonts.
My font book even after being cleared out still thinks and shows my old font history.
Last night my fonts were showing in Illustrator/PS/Indesign but now only shows a basic selection.
Was also told that I should not be running CS2 on my intel based MacBook Pro yet CS3 is not yet ready for Leopard.
I am just finding that my new MacBook Pro whilst fast and sexy seems to have moved away from the logic of old, maybe I am stuck in the past but my working day is greatly increase and eaten into due to clashing software and font problems.
    Hi,
I recently got a Mac Book Pro with Leopard and transferred all my Files etc across when doing this I copied my Fonts from my Old G4 to my Mac book Pro and it does not recognise them and will not load them into Font Book, it always says bad font detected or will not validate them!
Obviously this is either a major oversight by myself or apples they work fine on 0S9 and on OSX but not with Leopard, can anyone help as these fonts cost alot of money!
I have also now been to a friend who is still on 0S X and copied them from my OS 9 G4 to a CD then tried them on his machine and hey presto they worked, so I then got him to copy them to a CD thinking I would then be able to make the step up again, but no I still can not access my fonts, Im getting stressed now because I am wasting time and energy on forums and asking friends and trying things, I have a deadline for a Design/Website which relies on this Font and can not get the fonts to work, Macs are meant to be a designers best friend??? I m really having trouble finding the patience with Leopard and it seems things have not been thought out, any one else had this problem or Is the answer starring me in the face, go back to OS X ??? Please Help a slowly depreciating MAC fan !

  • Is Acrobat Pro required in order to be able to REMOVE fonts?

I need to remove fonts from files I am receiving from clients overseas in order to be able to upload the files to U.S. Patent Office for filing.  (The PTO job options file embeds referenced-but-non-embedded fonts, but certain Japanese fonts that are referenced in the source file won't embed, and that is preventing the upload.) I have Acrobat 9, Standard.  I was looking at tutorials on-line for guidance as to how to strip such fonts, but don't seem to find the various menu items that are referenced in the tutorials.  Do I need Acrobat PRO to do such editing?
    Thanks

If possible the task would require use of a Preflight. Preflights are only available with Acrobat Pro.
A quick look through the available Fixups Preflight choices does not show a "remove fonts".
    A note re: embedding fonts.
Acrobat Pro (starting with Acrobat Pro 9.x) provides a Fixup to "Embed Fonts" and a "Embed fonts (even if text is invisible)".
As with any routine processes an existing PDF to embed fonts the following applies (text is that present with the "Embed fonts" Fixup):
"If a PDF uses fonts which are not embedded into the PDF file they are embedded as subsets using this fixup.
It is required that the respective fonts are available to the OS, either in the system folder or activated via a font manager.
Some fonts may have a flag that their license does not allow embedding. In this case the fonts are not embedded into the PDF."
If you had Acrobat Pro and the Japanese fonts installed on your local machine you could embed them (provided the font license permits this).
Alternatively, you client could use process the content into PDF such that the PDF had all fonts embedded and then sent that PDF to you.
Or, the client uses the Acrobat Pro Preflight Fixup to embed the Japanese fonts in issue (this presumes the fonts are installed and available on their local machine).
    Be well...

  • Sync Space Problems as removed apps being added back

I had a problem with the original laptop in which I had itunes on so I haven't backed up or sync'd my phone for over 6 months. I finally got around to moving the itunes file to another computer.  Now when I try to sync my phone it is trying to add the apps back that were deleted off the phone but were still on the last time on itunes backed up of the phone.  So now the Apps are being added back and before it can complete the sync it runs out of space and cannot complete the process.  Help how can I get around this, thanks.

You'd think that deleting an app from your iPhone and then syncing the iPhone would tell iTunes that you don't want that application on your iPhone any longer - but that isn't what happens. iTunes is your home base for applications and media. You have to tell iTunes what you want added to your iOS device or removed from your iOS device.
My habit is to connect my iOS device and immediately select the option to sync newly purchased items from the device to iTunes. Once that's done I select my device in iTunes and look over the applications and media to see that everything I want/don't want is correctly indicated. Then I sync again.
Step 1 gets all the updated and newly purchased stuff into iTunes. Step 2 makes sure I get only what I want (and exactly what I want) on my device.

  • Adding Font to Font Book

I am unable to get Apples Font Book to add new fonts (through normal processes).
    Any sudggestions?
    Bud

Okay, the font I'm trying to add is Postnet.
Can you tell us where you got it exactly or what kind it is (ttf, type I)?
    I can
find it in all the Apple libraries but not in the
    Font Book.
By this do you mean to say it is sitting in Home/Library/Fonts?
I need it to work with my labeling
    application.
What app is this exactly? Normally you don't need to worry about Fontbook as such, but whether the font will appear in the Font panel or other place where a font is selected in a particular app.

  • Remove Sidebar feature STILL not added back in 10.6! ARGH! Why!?

I'm sure I can't be the only one upset that after having the ability to completely remove the Sidebar without going into Simple Finder mode and losing the Toolbar from OSX 10.x-10.5.1ish, it's STILL not added back in after being taken out during an early 10.5.x update.
I mean seriously, why would you REMOVE a feature? It seems in 10.6, the most you can do is remove everything from the Sidebar and drag it as far left as you can. It still wastes a lot of space.

There's even a keyboard shortcut to toggle it back and forth. Command-Option-s and it slides gracefully away, repeat and it slides gracefully back. And the toolbar stays put. Oddly, if you click the little button to toggle the toolbar off it closes the Sidebar too. Just discovered that if you Command click the button, you start cycling thru the various options for display of the toolbar--I count 7 different states. Shift click makes everything slide away verrrry slowwwwly.

  • [svn:fx-trunk] 7467: Removing font face validation so that the requested style is used whether or not it matches what the font describes .

    Author:   [email protected]
    Date:     2009-06-01 08:10:15 -0700 (Mon, 01 Jun 2009)
    Log Message:
Removing font face validation so that the requested style is used whether or not it matches what the font describes. This allows font families to be constructed from multiple fonts including those that do not describe their style in the OS/2 table. Note SWF and the Flash Player restriction of only support 4 faces per font family (plain, bold, italic, and bold & italic) still applies.
QE: Yes, please look out for negative test cases for embedded font styles that no longer fail. Also look out for minor font outline differences given that we use AFEFontManager by default for DefineFont3 embedded fonts. If you require the legacy font outlines you can configure the test case to use the BatikFontManager (which has been retained for MPL distributions).
Doc: Yes, we'll release note the relaxed font embedding rules for font faces. I'll annotate the bugs below.

i have sorted this out by placing it in the webapps dir of my tomcat. The problem is when i map a servlet in my own web.xml, it stops working. At this time i just want to map 1 servlet called main, and it is in C:\Tomcat 5.5\webapps\cmt3082\WEB-INF\classes\myProject
    cmt3082 is my project folder
    WEB-INF holds my web.xml

  • Font smoothing, font sizing, sub-pixel tuning, OS X vs Windows

I have a query regarding font the font smoothing implementation in OS X.
Having just come from the Windows world (using ClearType) naturally comparisons will be made. I am trying to get fonts looking as readable as possible on my Mac. I have 19" LCD connected via DVI so would expect no issues there. It seems difficult to get fonts looking... crisp. I am starting from the basis of using font smoothing across the board as recommended. Turn off smoothing is set to font size 8 or smaller.
I note with respect to tuning of font smoothing (anti-aliasing) that there is not a 'fine tuning' tool like as made available on Windows...
    http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx
for the Mac. At least I can't find anything Googling. And I am not thinking of TinkerTool as that is not a fine tuner. The Windows ClearType tuner can really make a noticeable difference by adjusting the sub-pixel tuning. Is there any equivalent tool/configuration option available for Macs?

You must have extremely good vision to be able to
tell the enhacement made by ClearType on XGA or
better displays. I wish my eyesight is as good as
    yours.
Well by your own admission you must be half blind, and I think you must be if you can't see the difference between - and let's be precise about this - no anti-aliasing vs. anti-aliasing +- sub-pixel rendering. Whether on Windows and/or OS X. There is.
Subpixel rendering is a trick used when resolution of
displays are challenged and small font readability is
    crucial.
Today, the only place this makes sense is on
cell phones when you are trying to render small type
    like a webpage.
I believe the website links I posted show that I have a reasonable grasp of what sub-pixel rendering is, that was not the purpose of my question. Also, actually, you are incorrect when you state that sub-pixel rendering is relevant/necessary only for small fonts. The exact opposite is true - usually sub-pixel rendering (including in OS X) is turned off for small fonts because it tends to make them more unreadable.
On desktop displays today at XGA or greater resolution,
the tradeoff in enhancing a bit in resolution is
outweighed by the added computation cycles needed to
filter the entire display so the eye sees "grey" on
average rather than red or green or blue.
Well you better rush and tell Apple to rip it out of OS X... because they seem to disagree with you as both anti-aliasing and sub-pixel rendering are included, and encouraged to be used, in OS X!
I'm sorry, but your statements are just plainly wrong and unconsidered.
Back to my - still unanswered, factual and valid question. The implementation of anti-aliasing + sub-pixel rendering in OS X does not appear, and I am stating this unbiasedly, to be as good as it could be (as I have seen in Windows). BTW this is not solely my finding as a number of very experienced Mac users have pointed out:
    Here...
    http://www.michelf.com/weblog/2006/subpixel-antialiasing-achilles-heel/
    and here...
    http://www.betalogue.com/2006/01/24/pages-20-does-not-fix-font-smoothing-issue/
    and here...
    http://mjtsai.com/blog/2006/02/04/font-smoothing-in-pages/
I gather from the replies I have received thus far, and from research on the Internet, that there is currently no way - going into Unix config files or by some utility - to address this issue. Hopefully it will be improved in a later version of OS X.
BTW - this does not stop me loving my new Mac!

  • Only 10 fonts in Font Book, though all seem to be working

Only 10 fonts appear in Leopard Font Book, though the standard font palette in Pages etc indicates that all my hundreds of fonts are working. I've tried "adding" my User Fonts folder to no avail, and deep cleaning all caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner didn't help either.
Am I alone, and if not, is there a fix for this?

Answering this and the next posting in one:
The fonts listed in the User list are:
    Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold
    Abadi MT Condensed Light
    Adobe Garamond
    Adobe Jenson
    Adobe Wood Type
    AkzidenzGrotesk
    Andale Mono
    Frutiger
    ITC Anna
    ITC Fenice
These are the same 10 that I mentioned in my original posting.
Of these, only Fenice is marked as a duplicate, but the Resolve Duplicates command does nothing. None of the listed fonts can be disabled using the checkbox or menu command.
If further User fonts are manually loaded, many (in fact most) of them are marked as duplicates, but the same comments apply (i.e. neither Resolve Duplicates nor Disable does anything).
After a number (a dozen or so) fonts are manually added, Font Book will start to crash with each addition.
My Leopard installation was Customized to avoid installing the additional Asian fonts. Subsequently, I reinstalled (using Pacifist), the /System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts folders. I then placed my other fonts into /Users/Home/Library/Fonts manually, but although they function correctly in applications, Font Book does not see them and will not load them, either all at once or a few at a time. The fonts have a variety of origins including Adobe, Microsoft and others, but all of them have previously been verified OK by both Font Book (Tiger edition) and Font Doctor.
