FontExplorer and Quark6.5

Has anyone used FontExplorer and Quark6.5,
Ive installed FontExplorer and it installs in Xtension in Quark6.5 for activation, it says it will be a bit slower than Quark7,
However it causes all my quarks users to crash quark and then it corrupts their Quark preferences folder,
It also seems to prevent them opening files they have already created.
Anyone else had any problems?

Yes. Linotype FontExplorer does work with network home directories, but it does so in an unusual way, which explains the behavior you're describing.
Here's how it works: Font Explorer stores information about its database (sets, smart sets, etc.) in ~/Library/Application Support/Linotype. With a network home directory, some of the contents of this folder are redirected to /Users/Shared on the startup volume of the client Mac.
Thus, if Sally logs in to the same computer she used, FontExplorer should appear "correctly" - that is, in the state in which she left it.
However, if Sally logs in to another computer, that won't be the case. Her symbolic link will point to an empty folder, which will either present the setup assistant and "lose" all of the fonts.
With all this in mind, I should note that the fonts themselves - if you chose to manage fonts by copying/moving - are in Sally's network home directory on the server.
My recommendation is this: FontExplorer is a great tool, best suited for designers or other professionals who will be working with a "user per computer" model. Storage of font sets in terms for FontExplorer are effectively a per-user and per-computer "preference." For an academic environment, I recommend Font Book.

  • 10.5.2 & Linotype FontExplorer X

Anyone else having issues with Linotype's FontExplorer X?
Safari refuses to load certain pages when FE is running [daringfireball, pitchforkmedia, for examples.]
    iPhoto wouldn't start up.
Quitting FE fixes the issue, but then of course I have to use Font Book...
I turned off extraneous fonts, cleared caches, reset safari, checked for obvious conflicts, etc.
All to no avail. Only thing that works is quitting FontExplorer, and that seems to instantly do the trick.
    Thoughts?

  • Linotype FontExplorer X

Hello, wonder if anyone can help me, we have changed the location of our fonts folder to one central server and deleted the folder on out hard drives, as we have a number of computers linked to this one folder now instead of everyone using slightly different fonts. Trouble is Linotype now cannot see the path for where the new fonts are, it is still trying to load them from their old location, so we cannot see fonts. How do I change the path location to where the new fonts folder is kept. I have  also turned off the font management because we do not want it to duplicate or move fonts from their current folder. So for example opening Indesign and it cannot find the font and my emails are boxes.
Can anyone help quite urgently please.

I use that as well and have never seen that problem. You might check the settings in FontExplorer Preferences/Advanced, but it sounds more like the preference file has become corrupted.
Close FontExplorer and go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.linotype.FontExplorerX.plist
    then restart FontExplorer.

  • 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD or Target Disk

Yesterday I was working on my MacBook Pro. I use FontExplorer to manage fonts. I ran the conflicts diagnostic looking for missing font files, which returned about 200 results (I was expecting this). I've moved the fonts installed by Adobe/Microsoft out of my fonts folder in my user library (user library, not system). For some reason the computer started to become very slow, to the point of beachballing. The freezing seemed to start and stop. I was able to close FontExplorer and Illustrator without force-quitting. I tried to shut it down gracefully at that point but it froze up again, so I hit the power button to force a restart. It started up but now it hangs on the gray screen right before the Apple logo. The logo doesn't come up, I can hear the drive spinning as normal but it doesn't do anything.
I've tried booting from a retail copy of the Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work. I can hear the disc spin up in the DVD drive as though the computer is about to read it, but nothing happens. It just stays on that same blue screen. I've tried booting my MBP in Target Disk mode from my iMac. The target disk icon appears, however it just sits in the middle of the screen and my drive doesn't mount on the iMac. I've noticed now that the white status light on the front of the MBP (on the latch) doesn't come on, and if I cover the speakers the backlight doesn't turn off.
What do I do now? I have an enclosure I could use to try and boot the MBP's drive from, but I'm running out of options. I'm really starting to worry about my data. I have a major school project that's already late which is on there, and I don't have a recent backup. If I don't hand it in... let's not go there. I don't understand how this could happen; I take very good care of my computer, I turn it off when it's not in use, and I run Cocktail on it once a day which does a SMART status check.
    Help?

    sig,
The first thing I tried was booting from the install disk. The 2008/2009 MBP's aren't able to boot from a retail DVD of Snow Leopard, which is why I ended up using the original hardware-specific install disk that shipped with my computer. That didn't boot either. I was able to view the drive in Disk Utility when it was in the enclosure, but the partition with my data on it would not mount. I attempted a repair disk on the drive but that failed. It wouldn't mount in Terminal either. I considered trying to rebuild the volume catalog using TechTool Pro but there's the possibility that could actually make things worse. So I've taken it to the repair shop. They're running it through DiskWarrior overnight, last I heard there were 60-something thread errors. Yesterday my SMART status was fine, today my drive is dead. What happened? Hoping for the best (but expecting the worst).

  • Not all installed fonts are available in Illustrator CS4

    Hi,
I've noticed that not all of my fonts are available in Illustrator CS4. My list appears as usual in the drop down menu, but many of my fonts have somehow become incomplete. For instance, only 3 weights of Helvetica are available, instead of the 20 or so I have installed on my Macbook Pro. I use Linotype Fontexplorer, and all of my fonts appear without problems in the browser window, but not in Illustrator.
I've deleted the Adobefontlist file with no result, and I've also tried uninstalling the fonts and reinstalling them with no result. I've had a few searches to see if anyone else has had the same problem, and some people have similar issues but not exactly the same. I've also tried some of the adobe troubleshooting steps with no result.
Any help with this would be gratefully received. Somebody must have experienced the same problem?
    Many thanks
    Jono

Thanks Jesseham, a good suggestion. All fonts within the families are ticked like you say, and I've just performed a clear out of the caches but still no success I'm afraid.
I've attached a picture of my font list in Illustrator in the hope that someone might see something that I'm not. As you can see from the list, Helvetica Neue LT Std is in the list as Helvetica Neue LT Std 85 Heavy and only has the option of 'Regular' under the font style drop down menu. It should be just Helvetica Neue LT Std in the font list drop down menu and have all of the available weights in the font style drop down menu.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Jono

  • Arial font issue in Apple Mail

    I'm a designer.
    I have a MacPro tower running 10.9.5
    Apple Mail 7.3
    and FontExplorer X Pro 4.2.1
I've had issues with fonts (as one does with so many) and finally got the cache cleaned up for one issue when a new one has popped up.
I have my mac restart every night, and it my login apps are Mail and Font Explorer.
When Mail first opens, my unread messages number in the sidebar are shown in "Last Resort" and the sender's email is shown as all pound signs.
Sometimes to fix this I quit mail, go into FontExplorer and turn Arial on and off, and then re-open Mail. Sometimes I can get it to fix itself by quitting and re-opening Mail a few times.
It's not a massive issue, but it is pretty annoying to see first thing in the morning!
Other than rebuilding my 6k font library, any suggestions on what's happening?

Try going to Applications/Font Book and validating the font. There may be option to do that in Font Explorer.

  • InDesign CS5 crashing on launch due to font auto-activator issue

I was having a problem where all the jobs I had been collecting would no longer open in InDesign CS5 without crashing on startup. Just found out today it has to do with the new feature in CS5 that reads fonts from your "Document Fonts" folder. Once I renamed the folder the files started opening up just fine again. Is there a way to disable that feature in InDesign, or has anyone else found another workaround that doesn't involve renaming the folder on every job I collect?
I'm sure it's a known issue by now, but I didn't see anything come up when I did a search.

Same problem here. Whenever I want to open a packaged InDesign document which includes a Document Fonts folder containing some fonts which are identical to my system fonts (10.7.3 in my case) InDesign hangs. The best way to avoid these problems is to clean all system font folders and start managing fonts yourself. Check what fonts are needed for a certain document, avoid using fonts installed by the system. Although it is very generous from Apple, Adobe and Microsoft to give us a lot of fonts for free it is wise to manage them yourself. Check the following font locations:
    ~Library/Fonts
    ~System/Library/Fonts
~User/Library/Fonts (first make the Library visible: from within Terminal type the following command and press Return: chflags nohidden ~/Library)
Remove all fonts installed by Adobe (109 fonts) and Microsoft (154 fonts) to a differrent location. I manage them with FontExplorer 3.0 but you are ofcourse free to use any other font manager you prefer. Clear out any system font which is not needed by the system. Make sure the removed fonts can be enabled when needed. In FontExplorer you can create a set like 'Adobe CS5 Fonts' and put all Adobe fonts in there. This also counts for Apple system fonts which you remove. Create a new set in FontExplorer and call it OS Lion Fonts for example and move all fonts in there. I'd like to point out that I choose to manage fonts myself and I keep FontExplorer's capabilities to organaise fonts turned off (Preferences > Advanced > Organise font files). This way the Finder structure I use to manage my fonts (which is by foundry/designer) is maintained.
Clearing all unneeded fonts keeps the font list short and uncluttered which makes it easy to select fonts in InDesign or any other app. When you are designing things you want to make a selection of fonts you want to use in advance so keeping a lot of fonts available to the system is pointless in my opinion anyway.
Also, this process gets rid of a lot of fonts which you don't use/need  like Chinese or whatever other language fonts. It shortens the font list dramatically. Setup font auto activation/deactivation so that fonts are disabled automatically after reboot or when you close a document to prevent the font list from growing out of proportions.
Below is the list of fonts which I keep installed/enabled by default in my ~System/Library/Fonts folder:
    Apple Color Emoji.ttf
    Apple Symbols.ttf
    AppleGothic.ttf
    Courier.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
    HelveLTMM
    Helvetica LT MM
    Helvetica.dfont
    HelveticaNeue.dfont
    HelveticaNeueDeskUI.ttc
    Keyboard.ttf
    LastResort.ttf
    LucidaGrande.ttc
    MarkerFelt.ttc
    Menlo.ttc
    Monaco.dfont
    Symbol.ttf
    Times LT MM
    Times.dfont
    TimesLTMM
    ZapfDingbats.ttf
I haven't checked Times yet but I think it can be disabled. If you think Times is causing problems and you rather want to activate it yourself when it is needed or you want to use it you can remove it from the ~System/Library/Fonts folder. Drag the font to the desktop to make a copy first. Next trash the font file. Enter your admin password end you're done. If a font is needed by the system it gets restored automatically and you get a notification like "The system font 'HelveticaNeue.dfont' had been restored. This font was removed. Mac OS X needs this font to display text onscreen."
If you don't use FontExplorer you can use Onyx to clean font caches when you are done clearing out unwanted fonts. Always reboot afterwards.
    Hope this helps.

  • Font Management Bug

Been looking for a fix to this for a while but can't seem to find any answer, so here it goes. I've been dealing with a specific font management related bug since I updated to Lion. It's an issue involving FontExplorer X 1.2.3.
If a font is activated on my system (via FontExplorer) and I am visiting a website unto which the same font is integrated via @font-face, the font will instead render a bunch of As inside a square in Safari 5.1, Times New Roman in Chrome 13.0, but it will render correctly in Firefox 5.0.1. Deactivating the font in FontExplorer and reloading the page will make it render correctly in all browsers.
This said, I work in web design and it's been making my life horrible since I upgraded to Lion. I have tried emptying font cache, did not worked. Anybody else faced this issue and found a fix?

Actually, I did. It mentionned cleaning font cache, emptying your font collection and starting over, and also that the problem seemed to involve system fonts. I tried cleaning my font cache with no results, same with emptying my whole font collection and re-importing it over. Also, the font I'm experiencing problem with is not a system font.
Guess I'll just wait for a fix from Apple, and use Firefox for web developement in the meantime.

  • T61 nvidia driver causes font problems

after my last update a new graphics driver for the nvidia quadro 140m was installed.
the new version (7618) caused bad problems with my fonts. (they could not been displayed)
-> only squares for each letter
it took me a have day to find out, that it was the graphic driver (i didn't expected that).
After I reinstalled my fontexplorer and repared my windows installation several times,
it took me another half day to find the download to the old driver again. (7471)
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7kd165ww.exe
now it works again with the old driver and i hope there will be an update and at least a notice in the thinkpad system update.
    frustrated greets.

    Hi Puschl636,
I had a similar problem. I have 3.03a of the presentation director and the most current display driver.
If I boot with dual screens, the first time I do it, I have to open the lid to the laptop and then close it after startup and it will usually move to the dual screen profile.
It may be a temp fix, but after that, as long as I have it docked, the dual screens come up.
    Hope that helps!

  • CS6 hangs/crashes every time on startup

    Hi
I've had an issue on and off that I've been able to fix my deleting the ID cache in the past, but after updating to the latest version of ID today, I cannot get it to open (either hangs, freezes or crashes on startup). I use Fontexplorer, and I've deleted all plugins, shutdown the program, deleted every cache/reference to prefs in the Library, repaired permissions, uninstalled, ran the clean script, all to no avail.
Would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Very frustrated.

What version of Font Xplorer? A user with a similar crash day-before-yesterday finally traced it to Font Xplorer 3.

  • InDesign CS3 hangs with colored spinball after start application

We have inhouse a big problem:
in different times hangs indesign CS3 with the color spinball. After the interruption of the application and restart we can see follow: when the app is up and we think, yes! we can work the spinball comes back and we can wait...if we wait to work after the restart 1-2 minutes the spinball comes for 20-30 seconds and then we can work without problems. As far as the next time (normally within 1 week...).
We have checked the switch, the cables. We have this problem also without network connection. And it reproducible on mac 10.4.x, 10.5.x, Windows XP and Vista. With versions 5.03 and 5.04.
What is this for a problem?
We have deleted all preferences and moved the plugins outside (we have 3 plugins: Softcare K4, Linotype Fontexplorer and Typefy): This problem is always here.
We are helpless. Can you us?
    Thanks for a solution!
    Zeljko

Did you also install any new fonts? That looks like a font error.

  • 10.5.2 - It broke my applications!

Sorry if this has been posted before, but it's a problem.
Just updated to 10.5.2 with the graphic update, etc... it now seems like Firefox 3b2 doesn't work (it will launch and then just stop working) and Photoshop CS3 just won't launch. Now, Firefox really isn't a problem, but I depend on Photoshop as somewhat of a source of income.
Basically, it will get to "Initializing swatches" or something around that during the launch cycle then crash.
I'm not sure if this is a problem with Photoshop or the new Leopard update, but it's not cool. :P
Thanks for any help, guys and gals!
P.S. I guess I should note that yes, I have installed the new version of Linotype FontExplorer and yes, Photoshop is still broken. I've also tried deleting the preference file.
I should also note that it seems it has also broken Coda and lord knows what else. This is quite a bummer...

Open Console in your /Applications/Utilities folder.
Under Log files in the left pane, click ~/Library/Logs, open up the crashreporter entry, and click on the entries for some of the applications that have crashed. Copy the first 10-20 lines or so from applications that have crashed in the last day and past them here.
For example, here's one (and the only one) Safari crash I've had in calendar 2008. It seems to indicate that Flash Player, er, pooped the bed

  • Fonts visible but cannot use

Recently I went to use a glyph from Webdings and found that, while the font's characters are all visible in Character Palette and FontBook, I cannot use/insert them. When I try I get this message:
The font you are typing in has been substituted by another.
The font "Webdings"does not contain one or more of the characters you have entered and will be substituted by the font "Last Resort"......
A few days before this happened (though I cannot say there is a cause and effect relationship) I installed Linotype's FontExplorer, copied all fonts into it, and opted to have it clear the font caches as it recommended.
In a third-party font viewer called FontDoc, the characters for Webdings do NOT appear, but are substituted by Lucida Grande. Same with Wingdings 1, 2, &3. It may be true also of other fonts, I have not checked them all. Of course the symbol I need just now is in Webdings and inaccessible, whether I drag it into a doc or use the "Insert with Font" button.
    What I have done:
Trashed FontExplorer and all its files.
    Repaired Prefs.
I will run Onyx as soon as I finish the document I am working on (and back everything up).
    Any other ideas?

What app are you doing this in? You must set the font selector of the app to Webdings for the place where you are trying to input the character. Sometimes this does not work well, because webdings are in the Unicode private use area, and some apps may not recognize that (or apps like Appleworks and Word X do not do Unicode at all).

Please how can i stop this from coming on my Macbook?

If you're running a database application called "Bento," you'll have to stop using it. It's incompatible with Yosemite and has been discontinued by the developer. Other applications that have been reported to cause this alert are "Sketchup," "FontExplorer," and "Juniper Network Connect." Refer to the developer for support.

  • Flash CS3 not seeing the correct fonts

I'm not a Flash guy or a font guy, so bear with me on this
    one!
My boss has CS3 Production Premium running on Mac OS X 10.5
(on a MacBook Pro) and manages fonts using Linotype FontExplorer X.
This works fine in every program except Flash: when he tries to
select a font, various fonts that are activated and working fine
elsewhere do not show up in the list. Additionally, fonts that he
hasn't activated and made available DO show up!
Any idea what the problem is?
    Thanks.

After asking elsewhere, I fixed the problem so I'm reporting
back so that others might find this useful later.
    To fix the problem:
    1) Close Flash and all other CS3 apps
    2) In FontExplorer, do Tools -> Clean Application Font
    Caches -> Select “Adobe”
To avoid running into this issue in the future, always do the
following when working with FontExplorer and Flash:
    1) Close Flash
    2) Open LinoType FontExplorer
    3) Activate fonts
    4) Close LinoType FontExplorer
    5) Restart Flash
