Fonts after a new install

Hello Forum,
Having completed a new install of arch, and sucessfully installed the Gnome Desktop Environment, I am having trouble printing legibly and viewing web pages properly, problems that I assume are to do with incorrectly/insufficiently installing fonts.
I have tried to learn about what fonts can/should be installed as a basis for 'normal' web browsing and printing from reading the ArchWiki, but I have become somewhat confused, and seem to have got stuck at this point.
I wondered if someone could give me some advice on the 'basics' to get me 'up and running' with printing and web browsing please?
Many thanks everyone.

The first part of that is good.  The second part is understandable - but if we're to help we need to know which wiki pages you've followed, and what you've already done.
There are many approaches.  It seems many archers use the infinality configurations (I tried it, but it didn't suit me).  But for a simple pragmatic approach, I'd suggest installing ttf-ms-fonts from the AUR.  For better or for worse, many websites rely on ms fonts.

these are errors i get when trying to open acrobat, after a new install of v. 8, seven is installed and opens but crashes when i try to print. the photoshop error is occurring when i open it up. it goes through the splash screen and then comes to an error and won't open. i reinstalled and got the same error. i made a new user and tried both programs and they worked fine. even printed the pdf in new user without trouble, in reader 8. i've moved the local library's prefs for all adode products and restarted with the same results. i'm running a g5 power pc dual 1.8 ghz machine that has a new internal drive (needed a larger one) that i carbon copy cloner'd the old HD to. also did another identical machine, same way at same residence, and no problems with either program.

  • After a new install with old TBird uninstalled."Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible" Should have created a NEW profile?

My Windows 7 Ultimate computer received an unauthorized Windows overnight update followed by error messages. Bless Microsoft. To compound the problem there were NO restore dates found and no recent backups. I lost about the last entire year of data including all my many downloads and recent documents, etc.
Like another user, I also had more than a year of Thunderbird emails in my inbox and many other folders. Important to me. Now TBird won't open...at all... and gives me an error message: "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." OK. So I uninstalled it and REINSTALLED IT, more than once, and still get this same error message after a supposedly successful installation. The error message and then TBird fails to open. Shouldn't it create a new profile with the new install?

No. It's looking for, and finding, profiles.ini but can't find the profile in the location stored in profiles.ini.
Deleting (or moving or renaming) profiles.ini should indeed force it to generate a new profile.

  • Firefox installed in Archlinux can display fonts after a new fonts installed

Hi! I'm a Linux user. Recently I migrate to Archlinux. At first time I used Firefox without issues. Then in the process the install and config software and the distro I installed new fonts. That fonts I used in IBM Linux distro, OpenClient based on RHEL 6.5. Thats fonts are a backup of that machine. The set of fonts include around of 4000 fonts: Windows 7 Fonts, Google Fonts, Droid and others. In RHEL I have not issues with this fonts. The fonts groups are:
    <pre><nowiki>[elrengo@xpsl421x .fonts]$ ls -l
    total 272

But in Archlinux after fonts installation Firefox can not show fonts, and I can not write in textbox. I do:
    * Reset Firefox to defaults --> Do not works.
    * Uninstall Firefox / Re install Firefox --> Do not works.
    * Reinstall fontconfig package in Archlinux. --> Do not works.
    * Update font cache --> Do not works.

  • [SOLVED]Multiple Problems after a new install on Arch Linux

    Hello all,
I just finished installing Arch Linux from the core ISO which I downloaded from the site. The install went smoothly and booted up fine. Also I was able to install gnome and its extras fine as well. On the first boot after installing gnome I managed to get my resolution correct also. However later on after I installed compiz fusion everything with the resolution seems to be going wrong . My computer specs are shown below :
    AMD 64 3200
    Asus M2N MX-SE
    2 GB Ram
    Geforce 8600 GT
Viewsonic VA1918wm (Native resolution is 1440x900)
At the moment I can only manage to get upto 1024x768 and it looks quite bad at that resolution. I have attached the xorg.conf I have at the moment.

While I was trying to fix this I noticed I was encountering other problems also. For one I found that sometimes dhcpcd times out on booting up and I cant seemt o connect to the Internet on booting. Although I just thought of trying a static IP and I'll post if that helped later on.
Another problem is I found that I seem to get the following error randomly. Pressing ctrl + D after this just restarts the machine.
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Finally, while I boot up I noticed that it says "Mounting root partition as read only   [DONE]"  Is the root partition supposed ot be mounted as read only ? Attached my fstab just in case it is needed.
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

As you can see I'm quite new to Arch Linux so any help would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you for all your suggestions . I tried replacing the ID to Card0 but it didnt seem to fix it . However on the bright side I checked more threads on the forum and found some that helped out . :)

I copied the xorg.conf file from the third link and just made minor changes to it like removing all the resolutions I didn't need and now its working fine :).
Now Im just stuck with two problems. One is the following message which appears randomly.

    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *

    * reboot automatically. *
A thread about the same can be found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=295384 but there isn't a solution on it.
The second is the intermittent problems with the Network being setup. Sometimes when I boot up it just says dhcpcd timedout and I won't be able to connect . However I can connect on another machine at the same time.
Took a look at the drive in question with gparted and it shows the below information:
    /dev/sdb1 ext3   /   32.59 GB    4.92 GB   27.68 GB  boot
By any chance is any of the above information relevant :x ?

I had a clean install of 10.6 and after that the Software Update can't connect to the internet (the status bar hangs at the beginning and finally it prompts me the internet is not connected) while all my other applications can.
    Someone help me out?

I am having exactly the same problem as well.. has anybody managed to solve this yet? I have uploaded Snow Leopard - try to connect to Software Update - the menu bar scans a little then stops and then an error saying 'Not connected to the internet'' but the connection is working fine!!
Is this a SL issue? or just an overload with the Software Update programme? I cant do anything - no update for itunes/iphone software, etc.. most annoying.
Look forward to seeing some good news and some answers to this one.

  • Possible to place old emails after a new install (10.5) ???

I've recently just installed 10.5 on a new internal drive..... starting from scratch minus the applications transfered using "migration assistant". I'd like to be able to apply (or move) all of my existing email from the 10.4 drive installed to the new 10.5 drives "Mail".
Is it possible to embed them into the new mail under a newly created account?
Would I have to transfer the previous account form old drive? Would that include all old messages?
.... sure would be nice to retain all my old emails!

    Chris,
The method I have given is an "all or nothing" proposition. In other words, it replaces whatever currently exists with the old one. Any new emails will be over-written. Do not use this method if you want to "merge" your email.
There's not a really clean way to "merge" emails folders, but there are a few options from which you could choose.
One option would be to move your current "Mail" folder (in your HOME "Library" folder) to a safe location; perhaps your "Documents" folder would do. It might also be a good idea to move the current plist file to the same location.
You would then place your old "Mail" folder in the Library folder, and proceed to launch Mail. Now, you would have access to all your old email, and it would be converted to the new Mail formats. Your objective here would be to create a new "mailbox" folder, and to place any messages you want to "archive" into that folder. Make sure you gather anything you want to keep from all of your mailboxes: "Inbox," "Sent," etc. The idea is to collect everything into one folder within the Mail application.
If you now go and look inside the "Mail" directory in the "Library" folder, you should be able to locate the "mbox" directory containing the contents of your new mailbox. Look in the "Mailboxes" folder inside the Mail folder. Find the "mbox" directory (it looks more like a file, but it is really a standard folder) for your mailbox, then drag it out to your Desktop.
You could now put your existing "Mail" folder and plist file back in place, then launch Mail and use File>Import Mailbox to import the mbox file sitting on your Desktop. The above method would be good to use if you have (or had in the prior installation) multiple email accounts, multiple "custom" mailbox folders, or both.
If, instead, you know that there are only one or two mailbox folders from the old installation that you'll want to import into the new, it might be easiest to simply import them as they are. If, for example, you only want your old "Inbox," launch Mail in 10.5 as it is right now, then use the "Import" dialogue to navigate to the corresponding "mbox" folder in the Tiger installation. Easy.

  • Restore files from time machine after new install

In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash.  I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post.  The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine.  After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?
I appreciate in advance your help.

When you complete the installation and boot into the Setup Assistant use the opportunity to restore from a TM backup which will appear in the Assistant. Just have the backup drive connected. You can then restore from the most recent backups of your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences.
Restore will take a while, but when done just restart.

  • How to get back installed apps after a fresh install?

I would like to start a new installation, format Macintosh HD and reinstalling Snow Leopard. From that point carry on with Lion, Mountain Lion and, eventually but not sure, Mavericks. After the new install could be problems retriving all intalled apps from Applestore?
    Thanks

My imac started with Snow Leopard, then after Lion and Mountain Lion i accepted the upgrade to Mavericks and i didn't appreciate the new interface and usage of some apps, i.e. iMovie. Meanwhile, even before Mavericks, os was slowing down, but even if a bit annoying and unusual still accetable. Consider that i have installed a bunch of apps regularly purchased, mainly fom Applestore. No fancy gadgets. So, as i didn't like that much Mavericks decided to restore from Time Machine. Possibly was a mistake and now i have an enviroment i feel i can't manage. Today, for instance iDvd shut down in an unaspected way three times and then i decided to reinstall. Agree Mac is not Win and, in fact, never had such a problem, but now i need, say for my interior peace, to start from a clean situation. That's why my question, what about my actally installed apps?
    Thanks

  • Please help with new install

Superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. I get this error after a new install and reboot, any idea what this mean and how to fix it.
    Appreciate all the help.
This is a AMD 1.8mgz and 1 gig of ram on Asus mb.

I just downloaded the image archlinux 2009.02 core i686 and was able to install with no issues.  I was able to reboot successfully.  It appears to be an issue with the newest installer specificly.  turtle, try the old installer and see if you can't get things working.  This should work for the OP too.
I got it to boot after an install for the first time using this older install image.
I wasted 8 freaking hours trying to figure out the problem and the answer is as simple as use the older installer.  Shesh.
I was wrong.  I installed once successfully in one of the computers on an 80 gb hard drive.  When trying to reinstall on two different 120 gig hard drives the error repeated itself.  I'm spent on this.  I'm going to have to try another distro.
After two more installs I can get it to load but I'm now having a superblock last load time is in the future error.
Used fsck on all my partitions to fix the problem and now I have a successfully booting arch system.  Guess I won't have to jump ship just yet.
------update, maybe this will help somebody----------
I'm not sure why but the partitions on my first disk are all referred to as sda and not hda even though all my hard drives are IDE (via command 'df', fstab has them listed by UID).
Even weirder, when I installed a new hard drive into the machine, I had to format it and mount it by referring to /dev/sdb and not /dev/hdb like I expected.  This is odd as I don't even have any sata connections in my machine.  Could someone tell me why this is happening.  Is it a 'feature' or a 'bug' of arch?
lldmer,  I wish I had listened to you when I was trying to install over and over the day before yesterday.  Looks like you hit the nail on the head on this one.  I wish I had tried what you suggested.  The weird thing is that when I was originally having problems, the fstab did have the drives listed by UID.  I wonder if changing those UID entries to /dev/sda style entries would have fixed my problems.
If I install arch again, I'll have to try that.

  • IPhoto won't open after new install and restore of back-up

    Hi guys
My hard drive just died (for the second time in 6 months!) so I have just gotten the computer back with a new drive. I did a new install of Tiger from my original install CDs, did the download thing to get all the updates, and ran a "restore" from my external drive using iBackup (http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup//index.html) to restore all my previous system settings, documents, etc. So far this seems to have worked well, a couple of 3rd party applications didn't re-install - specifically Neo Office and WiFind - but I was able to manually install those and everything seems to be working fine.
Except iPhoto. It won't open. When I click the dock icon it bounces once and does nothing. No little arrow under it or anything. Nothing at all happens when I click the icon in Finder (in the Applications folder). When I searched it in spotlight it told me there was a file called iphoto.crash.log, so I went and had a look at that hoping it would tell me the problem, but I don't understand it. I'm not particularly good at the behind the scenes stuff with computers.
Wondering what I should do now - if someone can perhaps interpret the log file and find the issue if that would help, or if I should uninstall and re-install iPhoto by itself (and if so, how?), or if there is something else that may be causing the issue. I noticed there are a few files relating to it when I search with spotlight but I don't know which of them might be relevant. I could post a screenshot if that is allowed, or post the log file if it would help?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help!
    Regards,
    Chloë

    400 Updates???
Did you Repair Permissions before & after each one?
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
