Fonts disabled in 10.6

I copied the fonts residing on my G4 to my MacBook Pro, which is running 10.6.2. All of the fonts worked fine with Linotype Font Explorer X, but now they are all red -- unavailable -- in both Font Explorer X and Font Explorer X Pro.
Is this problem due to a change in the Mac OS?

Hi Nicky,
I can only guess you brought over incomplete sets of Type 1 fonts.
Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
Adobe Garamond
AGarBol
AGarBolIta
AGarIta
AGarReg
AGarSem
AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts from a Type 1 PostScript font without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Font-disabling problem

How can I make fonts that are disabled in my Font Book stop appearing in my system font palette and my application font menus and dialogs?
This problem began suddenly last week. I use only a handful of fonts, and to keep my font lists sparse I keep all but my regular fonts plus the System fonts disabled in Font Book. Till recently this worked perfectly.
But last week when I installed MS Word, the installer stuffed a zillion fonts (which I don’t want, even disabled) into my system, and since then, my entire Font Book catalog shows up in my system font palette and my application font menus and dialogs -- even though Font Book still shows only my few regular fonts plus the System fonts as being enabled, and all the rest disabled.
    Thank you.

I've had the same -- a couple of bounces of the icon and no further action without warning. I too had to reinstall the system before that happened.
Macromedia had a special patch for this. I have patched my Studio MX and everything has been working fine ever since. It's still "out there" somewhere, but I don't have the link anymore, since macromedia.com closed down.
I tried to find the link, here's the article:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18933
I believe this may be your problem. It fixed mine after I reinstalled the system and did a "combined upgrade" for it.

  • Fonts moved to "Fonts Disabled" -- but still enabled

My upgrade to Snow Leopard has been generally painless, but there have been some quirks. For example, I was trying to resolve some font conflicts manually when I noticed that Snow Leopard had moved 61 relatively old but still useful TrueType fonts from "~/Library/Fonts" to "/Library/Fonts Disabled".
What a bummer, I thought -- except that to my surprise, the fonts were still available in every program I tried. I speculated that maybe I had long ago added duplicates to /Library/Fonts, but no, the ones in my "Fonts Disabled" folder were all I had. Snow Leopard's Font Book app found a few more dupes, but the program was able to resolve them with no fuss. All the supposedly disabled fonts show up normally in Font Book.
UPDATE: A helpful colleague pointed out to me that many of the fonts looked to him like fonts added by various versions of Microsoft Office. In fact the most recent version of Office added them to the root-level /Library/Fonts, but *in a subfolder called Microsoft*, so I hadn't seen them before. Pretty sneaky ... but it explains the issue. An older version of Office had added them to my user-level Fonts folder, while Office 2008 added them again, this time to the machine-level Fonts folder. Props to Snow Leopard for uncovering the conflict and disabling the user-specific versions!

I have the same problem, but it seemed to go away when I removed parental controls all together for the account.
Try rebooting after turning off parental controls. If that does not work, I'd also try clearing the safari cookies.
I only wanted time limits, so I had "Allow Unrestricted Access To Websites" selected, which was working until I update my son's machine to 10.8.2. now it pops up the can't access dialog every keystroke in the safari seach bar. There could not have been much testing of parental control for this release.

  • FontBook corrupted ? adding back Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled

    Hi everyone,
similar to many other people i got some of my fonts screw up after MS Office installation.
I tried to restore default fonts in FontBook, but it claimed that some fonts are missing.
There are no fonts in my ~/Library folders: Fonts, Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled.
However, there some in /Library: Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled which I would like to bring back.
So the question is - how to do it?
In /Library/Fonts Disabled   i see Arial, Timew New Roman, Verdana, Wingdings. I guess all of them were disabled by MS installation
and then replaced by MS versions.
My FontBook however does not show me those (e.g. I see no Times New Roman at all, so I can't re-enable it).
I suppose FontBook database is corrupted, so I should restart with Shift in safe mode and then FontBook should be fine, right?
What do I do with /Library/Fonts (Removed)  to bring in back in a propper way? Will FontBook also be able to see those and propose their restoration?
I would appreciate if someone could say with confidence what to do step by step to add Fonts (Removed) and Fonts Disabled back in use. I don't have a TimeMachine running (yet, plan to do it soon), and I use Mac for work, so i would prefare to minimize risks of messing the whole thing up myself
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Denis.

    My 2¢
Goto Versiontracker.com and download "Linotype FontExplorer X"
Move your Font Book preferences from your (Library/Preferences) folder and then make an archive of Font Book (Control-click, create archive in the Finder)
    Delete the original.
    Now, install/launch FontExplorer X.
There is an option to clean font caches during install - do that and your Mac will reboot.
Now, there is an option under the tools menu in FontExplorer X that sets your system font folders back to defaults - do that.
You should be good to go. FontExplorer X is free and an excellent font manager.
If you have any questions, post back.

  • Fonts disabled in Font Book all still on in applications (after SL upgrade)

I've successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard on my 2Ghz intel mac. I had some initial problems with fonts but all now working except that despite fonts being disabled in Font Book they are still active in all applications. As I have 500+ this is really annoying.
I've run Disk Utility. What else? - any ideas how to sort this out???

The database for Font Book is in a completely different location in Snow Leopard. The update doesn't seem to always do the hand off correctly as I've seen a fair number of posts stating the same problem. Resetting Font Book's database should fix it.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. Any font sets you have created will be gone. Also, all fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.

  • User Fonts Disabled After 10.4.11 Update!

***?? Ummm....not good! Three fonts I use regularly (Haettenschweiler, Marking Pen and Century Gothic) were missing when I opened a catalog project after installing the OSX 10.4.11 update. I launched Font Book and discovered my User Fonts had been disabled somehow (in fact there were no fonts listed!), and the program would not re-enable them.
Fortunately, the fonts were still in my home library (as well as collected in InDesign, God bless Adobe), and I was able to copy them into the main library font folder by dragging, and they did load when I opened the doc again. So my catalog project was not destroyed, thanks to this workaround. But if Font Book is broken due to this update, it does make me wonder what other horrors might have been unleashed in this update (aside from the poor Weather Widget being temporarily knocked unconscious).
    APPROACH WITH CAUTION!!

Sorry for the bump, but I needed to know if anyone besides me has discovered this: you start up Font Book, and it shows that User is turned off/grayed out. Tried turning it back on from "Enable User" in the Edit menu (key command shift/command/E), but no go. Guess I could try just creating a new font directory, since the fonts are still in the folder, just not available to the system because Font Book doesn't like User anymore.
If that doesn't work I may be back.

  • Disbale fonts; disable firefox caching

I am trying to speed-up the login process for users- currently requiring login to the server where all files are saved. I have heard that disabling the users caching the fonts from the server will help to speed-up logging in(?). I am also interested in hearing any ways that people have found to speed-up the log-in and accessing home directory process (as well as just improve general efficency). For example, why does it take so long to open GIMP when logged in to a server account but opening the app locally, but it is very fast on a local account accessing the same app?
Is the fact that Firefox uses a cache a reason why it is slow to open? Is there a way to set this preference across the network?
    Thanks for any help...

  • Fonts disabled in Font Book but are still active in Phtoshop

I found this issue  posted in 2011 but was never answered.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4094168?tstart=0#4094168
I am having the exact same problem as that user: I have a lot of fonts, but I only enable about 30 fonts at a time using Font Book. However, ALL 1000+ of my fonts still appear in the pull down menu in Photoshop. This causes my system to slow down and Photoshop to crawl.
Dumping my font caches is not helping. This problem seems to happen a lot and at random times. This affects ONLY Adobe products (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator). All my other programs work well with Font Book.
    Specs:
    Photoshop CS3
    Font Book ver 2.2.2
OS 10.6.8  (20" iMac) Upgrading to newer OS is NOT an option.
Dumped all AdoneFnt*.lst files and restarted.
    Restarted in safe mode.
Checked all fonts for corruption (all are perfect).
    Tried FontNuke.app
    Nothing works.
Why won't Adobe address this issue?

Hi psduser2000 and welcome to the Adobe Forums,

  • Mountain Lion missing font

    Hi all,
I have been using a PDF e-book version that comes with one of my school textbooks to read it on my mac, make annotations and such. I have always used Preview; I have never installed Adobe Reader. Today however when I opened the PDF using Preview to continue my reading it started displaying characters incorrectly. I restarted my Mac and the problem persisted. I did an online search and there have been people with a similar problem, most recommended to see if the font had been disabled using font book and/or by going to the "Fonts Disabled" folder under Library. I did checked my fonts and everything seemed to be correct, I enabled the fonts and it didn't work. Other recommended to install Adobe Reader; I did and it didn't work. This is the message I am getting from Adobe Reader: "Cannot find or create the font 'BYGBIR+Helvetica-12-0'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." I don't know what else to do, most of the text is still legible but there is some random missing text and text in graphs' axis and descriptions is unreadable. I included a screenshot of what it looks like. I will greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thank you,
    Javier.

Myriad Pro is an Adobe font. It's never been included with Mac OS.

  • Terminus-font not displaying correctly in gtk.

terminus isn't displaying correctly when i set it with gtk in lxappearance, for some reason it's showing some strange other font:
i've tried reinstalling the terminus-font package, and removing it and installing terminus-font-td1 from the AUR. the ttf version is not installed, despite what it says, also it displays correctly in italics, but not regular.
any ideas on how to fix this?

I think you have bitmapped fonts disabled in fontconfig. To enable them, do as root:
    rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf
    ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-yes-bitmaps.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-yes-bitmaps.conf

  • Please help! How to increase font size in RemoteApp?

    I have weak-sighted user.
There is some RemoteApp running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standatd x64.
I need to increase scale of fonts to 125% and use 120 dpi fonts for this user.
But  increasing scale of fonts disabled on RDP Session.
Option to use 120 dpi font doesn't exist.
On Windows Server 2003 I can locally increase scale and dpi and this apply for RDP sessions of all users.
If I locally increase font scale on Windows 2008 R2 this doesn't apply on RDP Session.
I tried to use desktop customisation to increase fonts of Windows Title, Menu and etc for this user. But I can't increase system fonts on dialogs.
Please help me to increase font size for my RemoteApp.

This is an old thread, but the problem persists on W.Server R2
Interestingly, as Microsoft removed this functionality to solve this problem, wich in my case, with thin client's connected to the server, the problem is aggravated.
It seems that there is not the slightest intention to solve this problem by Microsoft, since it is understood that each end-user settings, is completely independent of the configuration that should be the default Server or System Confg.

  • Fonts have disappeared

Hi, i'm hoping someone can help me....
Im having issues with font book. It's currently empty and all my fonts have disappeared. If i try to install a font it will appear in font book until i restart my computer, then it will disappear again. All Microsoft fonts are non-existent. The only fonts i can access in Microsoft applications are Mac System fonts (which aren't very many). I have looked in the font disabled folder and its empty. I have also downloaded linotype font explorer and it hasn't helped the situation.
This problem all started when i downloaded some fonts from the net for teaching purposes (which i will never do again after all the problems its caused me).
Can anyone help with idea's on how to restore all my fonts? Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ell

These fonts are not standard system fonts. They were most likely added by another app or you installed them manually at some point. For OCR A and B, the old Bitstream versions are installed by CorelDraw for instance. Without knowing which app it actually was, though, your best option is to track them down using font sites such as DaFont.

  • Asian Fonts

Hi, I have the habit of creating webpage into PDF format for offline reading. But recently i found out that there is a problem when the webpage is in Asian language, in this case, Chinese. When i try to do this, the fonts of Chinese webpage will turned into blank square. But i can fix it by using the "Tools - Content - Edit text document" to change the font type manually. After changing the fonts will be recognizable, but it's all mess, i need to re-copy all the words again from the original webpage. The problem for this is i need to change it manually paragraph by paragraph, and takes long time just to finish one file. Few days later when i tried to create the file from the same site (same website, same font type, but different content) the "blank square fonts" problem does not occur, so i doubt it has something to do with the Asian language pack. But after few attempts on the same website the blank square reappear again. Hope to get solutions for this, Thank you.

Ok so I've had all the Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Arabic fonts disabled by Font Book for the past 10 days. Can I safely delete them now? What the the language packages in my Library/Receipts folder? Can I delete those too? I've already used Monolingual to remove all the foreign languages from my applications.
    thanks,

  • What do I need to know about fonts?

Can anyone explain what I need to know about using fonts on a MacBook Pro running Leopard, or point me to a good reference or tutorial? I've never paid much attention to fonts in the past, as I only use a few in print (Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, etc.), and I never did much with fonts in my graphics work. But I want to take a closer look at fonts and start experimenting with them. Looks like a surprisingly big topic.
On my PC, I was limited to how many fonts I could display by memory. As I understand it, there's no such limit on a Mac running Leopard.
I encountered references to fonts when I installed Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office for Mac, so I need to figure out how to manage fonts, then go back and check the installation disks again.
Right now I have three font folders in username > Library: FontCollections, Fonts (empty) and Fonts Disabled (empty).
I also need to learn about the different kinds of fonts (e.g. True Type, etc.) and how/where people obtain them, though that's probably beyond the scope of this thread.
But before I do any more research via Google, I'd like to narrow the field a bit. I was hoping someone could give me a basic overview or point me to a good reference. What software do you use to manage fonts on a Mac, and do you have any basic tips to offer?
    Thanks.

  • MathType and Symbol fonts on Mac

    I'm running MathType 6.0a, InDesign CS4 6.03 on Mac OSX 10.5.7
There's a known issue with the Symbol font, but I can seem to get it to show up in InDesign or illustrator (It's fine in Word), though my system only shows one version of symbol, and it looks to be the correct one (stored in Macintosh HD > Library > Fonts)
    MathType recommends: (http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/TSN47.htm)
    What causes this problem
The MathType installer moves the Symbol font suitcase into a folder that it creates called "Fonts (Disabled)" during installation to ensure that your system does not use it.
When you upgrade your version of the Macintosh Operating System, reinstall Microsoft Office, or apply a patch to or invoke a "First Run" of Microsoft Office, these programs check your Fonts folder for the Symbol font suitcase. Since the Symbol font suitcase has been moved out of your Fonts folder, they install a Symbol font suitcase into your Fonts folder.
Some users, because they do not see a Symbol font suitcase in their Fonts folder, place a copy there, possible moving the Symbol font suitcase from "Fonts (Disabled)" back into their Fonts folder.
The best way to avoid receiving this error message is to manually remove the Symbol font suitcase from the Fonts folder in your System folder after upgrading Mac OS, or reinstalling, applying a patch to, or invoking a "First Run" of  Microsoft Office or one of its components.
This worked for my home computer, but isn't working on my work computer (where I really need it).
I've also tried repairing permissions as per, http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn126.htm
I run FontExplorer (the old free version), but it's useless for dealing with system fonts.
Does anyone know anything else I can try?

You may want to rerun in FEX > Tools > Clean System Font Folder… on the chance that your evil computer put it back.
    Que the Indd Secret Site:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/removing-nonessential-system-fonts-in-leopard.php
    Apple says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1642
    Anything other than:
    Monaco.dfont
    LucidaGrande.dfont
    LastResort.dfont
    Keyboard.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
and a working copy of Helvetica (any brand will do and only then assuming you need Photoshop), will get you where you need in terms of fonts. Every other font in your system is wholly optionally and I personally let FEX manage anything that isn't the above five fonts, think anyone who doesn't is making a mistake.
Short version. Delete every copy of Symbol and run every command under the Tools menu of FEX, throw two reboots in the machine and hope for the best.
