Fonts Do Not Display Correctly in Safari and Firefox

Certain fonts do not display smoothly in Safari and Firefox. They appear to have little pieces of the letters missing. I'm sure others have experienced this problem before but I could not find how to fix this. On the Apple Discussions the fonts look fine... on Google for example, they look messed up. I do not know specifically which font(s) are displayed weird but it happens frequently. This happens in Safari and Firefox on my MacPro and MacBookPro. Is there a setting to fix this?
Thanks,

Hello Flash, welcome to Apple discussions; )
Look for Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic Fonts, if you have them,
they can be the usual suspects.
Check the Text encoding in both Safari & FF, under the "View" menu.
In System preferences-> Personal (top section) in Appearance tab->
on the last portion of the panel Font smoothing Style: set that to Automatic
If those don't help, see this users tip excellent article Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X
Look into this application to find any corrupt font[s]Font Finagler
Good luck, let us know how you fare.

  • Lion text problem: Some text does not display properly in Safari and Firefox

    Hello
Some text in Safari and Firefox is seriously degraded, making it useless. I changed to Firefox because Safari was displaying wrongly, but Firefox displays the same way, so it seems to be an OS problem. See image as an example:
I cannot see subtitles on BBC streamed movies, and the timing of the movies on the bottom ribbon do not display correctly.
    I am using Lion 10.7.5
Is there a solution for this problem?
    Thanks for any help.

Unbelievable (and I still cannot believe that) - is wmode="transparent/opaque/etc" - not supported by safari ? then how do you suggest we go about transparent flash elements on web pages? why isn't it working on safari while on every other browser on earth it does?

  • Thumbnails are not displayed correctly in Firefox, but displayed correctly in Safari and G. Chrome

Firefox display problems regarding this customers site:

Thumbnails are not displayed correctly in Firefox - only a tiny bit of the picture is visible, incorrect scale (displayed correctly in Safari and Google Chrome).
Can I do anything to make it work in Firefox, too?
    Kind regards,

  • Search box not displaying correctly in Safari

How can the search bar on the Apple site not display correctly in Safari? I find this odd that Apple would allow this. It displays like 2 search boxes overlapping each other. It still functions correctly but it is a little embarrassing since I am always bashing windows pro browser display.

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Might be a corrupted cache or cookies issue. First, go to Safari Preferences>Security>Show Cookies. Type Apple in the Spotlight panel. Highlight/remove the cookies. Then, go to the Safari Menu>Empty Cache. Try the Apple site.
If the double search panel still appears, go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Caches. There, move to the trash the com.apple.safari file. Restart Safari and try the Apple site again.

  • Google fonts not displaying correctly since updating to Firefox 31.0

Since updating to Firefox 31.0, the vast majority of Google / web fonts are not displaying correctly, including icons that are being replaced with random characters. When I view the Google web fonts page, only a few display correctly, the rest just default to a sans-serif font.
    - I've tried running in safe mode with no add-ons enabled.
    - I've tried disabling all add-ons then re-enabling one by one.
    - I've checked the tickbox in the font settings for 'Allow pages to use their own fonts' is ticked
Any help appreciated, it's got quite frustrating now.
    Thanks, Greg

You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).
You can try different default fonts and temporarily disable website fonts to test the selected default font.
    *Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced
*[ ] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
You can check for problems with preferences.
You can check the <b>gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • JPG images not displayed correctly in Bridge and Photoshop (Mac OS)

(Note: I have copied the content of this query from the Creative Suites forum where I originally opened it.)
I am using CS4 under OSX 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5 Quad with 23" Apple cinema display. Images which have been captured as JPG are displayed fine by Preview, but when opened in Bridge, Camera Raw or Photoshop. the colours are all "washed out". The attached screen capture should give an idea of the difference, with the upper being Camera Raw (image settings) and the lower being Preview. My monitor has been calibrated and I'm using sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour space in Camera Raw and Photoshop. The colours displayed by Preview are pretty close to "real life". I find it virtually impossible to adjust the colours in Photoshop to get back to anything similar.
After opening the image in Photoshop without adjustment, and Save As JPEG with embedded color profile, Preview displays the new image the same as Photoshop. Save As JPEG without embedded color profile, and Preview displays this copy just like the original. It seems that Photoshop is making different (incorrect) assumptions about what color space to use when there is no embedded color profile. Shouldn't it assume sRGB like virtually everything else (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRGB)? Or is its interpretation of sRGB incorrect? How can I fix this?

…If there is someone out there who has experience of obtaining decent colour management in CS4 on a Power PC, I would really like to know how you achieved it.
That would be yours truly, and I hasten to reply because I may have some insights that can help you too.
Just get it it out of the way, here's my setup:
Photoshop 11.0.2 ("CS4"); VersionCue disabled and uninstalled.—2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 1,700MHz 512MB VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" CRT monitors; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; 1 FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units.
I can unambiguously and in good faith represent to you that my color management, from capture to print, is as spot-on as anyone with any kind of setup can hope to achieve.  Unequivocally and without qualifications.
Now, first things first:  Forget about trying to synchronize color management across the point applications lumped together only by Adobe marketing fiat into a variety of meaningless "creative suites".  Concentrate on Photoshop.  Do not try to use Bridge to synchronize anything.
The "suites" are a totally artificial construct created by Adobe bean counters and marketing types.  The point applications (i.e. the individual programs clumsily bundled together, e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) are developed independently by separate engineering teams that are not only not in the same building, but in different cities, different states of the American Union, and even in different countries.  They have very little communication among them, if any, as evidenced by repeated posts in these forums by Photoshop engineering staff urging us, the end users, to let the other teams know in their own forums that a given problem exists and is actually affecting our work.
Enough said about the cause of the problem.  The end result is that Color Management is at very, very different levels of progress and sophistication in each individual point application, with only Photoshop fully entitled to be considered state of the art.
Secondly, a disclaimer:  I have been hanging on to my CRT monitors and take care of them as Jascha Heifetz used to take care of his Stradivarius.  I don't know what I will do if I manage to outlive the usefulness and accuracy of my CRTs (unlikely at this point).  I have despaired in futile efforts to bring the luminosity of any LCD monitor down to where I would feel comfortable calibrating and profiling it.  I believe my monitors are the foundation of my color management efforts.
Especially if you have one of the extreme wide-gamut LCD or LED monitors, you'll face an uphill battle.
Be careful to avoid any version 4 icc profiles, whether canned or generated by your calibration software.  Stick to version2 icc profiles.  Ask the manufacturer of your calibration software/hardware if in doubt.
Here are some not-too-recent, but thoroughly representative screen shots of the calibration results I obtain with my monitors, which I calibrate and profile often and regularly (I validate the calibration at least several times per month).
In a nutshell, my color management practices and settings mirror those described by Bruce Fraser, Jeff Schewe, Andrew Rodney and Gary Ballard's site.  I have learned from all of them.
My working color space is ProPhoto RGB.  I choose to work with PSD and PSB files.  As a long-time, rabid JPEG hater, I only rarely deal with JPEGs, using them sporadically to illustrate a point in this forum or elsewhere in the web.  My main output consists of prints.
I only deal with tagged image files (files with an embedded color profile) and often recommend beating up with a baseball bat any moron that hands you an untagged file—figuratively of course, but I find the expression gets my point across unambiguously.
Following is a screen shot of some of my pertinent settings:
Note that I have never bought into the "suite" concept myself.  I do have and routinely use Adobe Illustrator 10.x, InDesign 2.x and Acrobat Professional 8.x, but they are all older, independent versions of each point application, licensed at different times.
Be further advised, that the answer to many problems offered by Adobe engineers often is not to install VersionCue, or uninstall it, or at least disable it.
Also, as outlined at the beginning of this post, concentrate on Photoshop, not on synchronizing applications that can't really communicate with each other, despite the claims of Adobe marketing hacks to the contrary.
One big caveat, do not fall into this trap:

You either want to learn, or you don't.  You either want to solve your problems, or you don't.
When you start arguing instead of studying, questioning advice instead of following it and detecting where you went wrong, you're on the right track to nowhere.  That attitude will get you there fast.  Remember you are the one with the problem, and only you can acquire the discipline to learn how to solve it.
Go ahead and ask me anything that is not clear, just don't argue with me please, and don't tell me why you think Fraser, Rodney, Ballard and I are wrong.  You see, I am not experiencing any problem that needs fixing.  I have an interest in helping you, but not in hearing about your speculations, theories or conclusions.

  • HT5648 OS10.6.8 Firefox 24.0  The new Yahoo mail shows no graphics.  However, the new Yahoo mail displays correctly in Safari and Chrome.  I believe this has to to with the settings for Javascript.  Help me, please.

    OS10.6.8, Firefox 24.0
The new Yahoo mail shows no graphics using Firefox 24.0 - just identical rectangles where new icons should be.\.  However, the new Yahoo mail displays correctly in Safari and Chrome.  I believe this has to to with the settings for Javascript.  Those settings aren.t easy to access in the most recent Firefox 24.0 version.   Help me, please.

The settings for Javascript are either on or off, Fireefox 24 doesn't give you a option to turn off Javascript, unless you installed something like NoScript extension (or some other Javascipt blocking add-on)
If NoScript, then you need to use the View > Toolbars > Customize and drag the NoScript "Temp Allow All" button to the toolbar area to enable all enabled scripts (including Javascript) on that web page.
Under the Firefox Help menu is a option to restart with add-ons disabled to see if something you might have installed is causing your problem.
Reinstall Firefox or create another user account and run Firefox there to try to localize your issue.
I'm having no problem here on 10.6.8 in Firefox, Chrome or Safari, Yahoo Mail works perfectly.

  • Symbol font is not displaying correctly on mozilla 23.0.1?

I am displaying a html page inside a frame having some Maths symbols, using SYMBOL font. but these symbols are not display correct on mozilla browser. provide some solution.

Hi sangeeta, the problem with writing code to solve this problem is that you likely need to create a table or a pair of arrays to contain the corresponding characters. As long as you are going to do that, it might be easier to edit the pages. Or add an external script to those pages to "fix" the references.
If you are saying that the HTML pages are out of your control, that's harder...
Is it an option to load the page dynamically onto your server so it can be processed by ASP.Net and then served using a URL from your server?
If not, are your page and the framed page on the same server? In that case, perhaps a JavaScript function that "fixes" the page could be useful.
If not, it's hard to see how you can overcome the "same origin" security constraints and get to the framed page.

  • Chinese display improperly in Safari and Firefox after OSX 10.6.7 update

After updating to 10.6.7 some Chinese websites don't display properly in both Safari and Firefox on my '08 book pro, while the '09 iMac has no such problem. On the book pro Chinese characters appear as unreadable squiggles. Other apps (word, mail, photoshop) seem to do fine post-update.
    Anyone encountered this? solution?

Puzzling. Why should it happen after the 10.6.7 update?
There is a long history of duplicate fonts causing problems in OS X. Do you know for sure whether you had duplicates of that one in 10.6.6?
Is this related to other more serious font problem reported by other users after the update?
I don't think the other one can be fixed by getting rid of duplicates.

  • I have created a powerpoint web app in sharepoint 2013 ,i used a ppt in this web app.My ppt image is not displaying correctly in MAC mozilla firefox

I am facing this problem in MAC OS Mozilla Firefox. It is displaying correctly in other browsers like google chrome and internet explorer in MAC OS,but it is not displaying correctly in Mozilla firefox.
I already checked the possible reasons like:
    1. Restarted my computer
    2. Clear cookies and cache
    3. Restarted Firefox in Safe Mode
    4. Troubleshoot all plugins
    5. Reinstalled Firefox
    6. Reset Firefox.
anyone know how to fix this issue.I am waiting for your valuable answers.

Looking at [http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/82591/in-powerpoint-web-app-2013-ppt-is-not-displayed-correctly-in-mac-os-mozilla-fire your screen shot] it reminds me of a problem with Flash on the Retina display not using the full area if hardware acceleration of graphics is disabled. See [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968863 I'm only getting one quarter of a screen on Flash Player on Firefox] (unsolved).
Not sure if that's relevant but does the display of the slide change if you make sure that hardware acceleration is enabled? The checkbox is here:
Firefox menu > Prefences > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
Note that any changes take effect after you exit and restart Firefox.
To see whether Firefox actually is using hardware acceleration, you can check the troubleshooting information. Either:
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
Toward the end, in the Graphics section, look for this row:
    GPU Accelerated Windows
The number will show a ratio of accelerated to non-accelerated window. If hardware acceleration is disabled, the first number will always be zero.
By the way, is the SharePoint PPT viewer using Flash, or Silverlight, or another plugin? Typically Firefox will display an icon that looks a bit like a "Lego" block in the address bar showing what plugins are in use in the page.

Why i can't see any image on flickr.
That happens most of the times but not always?
Both, on Safari and Firefox i experience the same problem!
I reseted Safari but seems to be useless

You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
*Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
*Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
*Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
*Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Hoefler text ornaments font is not displaying correctly in Pages

I've imported an existing document from Appleworks into Pages. I am using Hoefler Text Ornaments (HTO) font occasionally, using the pointing finger. Pages indicates that the font is HTO, but displays the following key: ']' which is the proper key to press in HTO to get the pointing finger. All the ornaments are missing. I've used keyboard viewer and indeed the viewer indicates that there are no ornaments only normal text.
I've confirmed that the font is named correctly, that the finger is part of the font, and that the original document displays correctly. I'm guessing that the HTO font is corrupted in Pages. What can I do?
Thanks very much for your help.

    Frank,
You're absolutely right. There's a button in the character palette labeled Favorites that will let you store glyphs. I think you and Gerry both have workable ideas. You can use the character palette or store special characters in a document.
A question, Gerry: why use another program to store the characters? Since the user is already working in Pages, why not create a Pages document, then paste in the character he/she might want to save? What am I not understanding about this?
