It's not necessary to have a Mac font -- OS X can use most Windows fonts as well. Only someone who knows what characters are needed for the specific languages can evaluate whether a particular font will have what is necessary, but here are some fonts that have most Latin and IPA characters:
Lucida Grande (already in OS X)
Gentium

Doulos SIL

Charis SIL

PS In order to input odd characters, you probably need to use the Character Palette or make up a custom keyboard layout. A tool for doing the latter can be found here:

Font issue (Thonburi font for Thai language)
Dear Apple and friends,
I'm using Final Cut Pro X (latest update as of 19/11/2014) on latest os x 10.10.1
While I was on OS X 10.9, I use the Thonburi (Font come with the system) for insert a Thai subtitle in the video without any problem.
But today I found out that I have some problem with Thai character on Thonburi font
I also attached the screenshot for your reference.
Please help me, I do need to use this font to keep consistent on the brand.
Thanks and looking forward to your help,
Best,
Note Pawares (Thailand)What title is it? You can try a different title and see if the problem remains.
Also, does the problem always occurs in the first line of a title, or only if there is more than one line, or... you should provide feedback to Apple, and be as specific as possible. (Final Cut Pro->Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback...)
It could be a problem with the font, or with how FCP X deals with it. There used to be similar problems with other fonts for Asian languages some time ago, but this the first time I hear of one for the current version. -

Cannot change font for UTF-8 pages in FF 4.0.1
No matter whether I change Options > Content > Default font, or go to Options > Content > Advanced and set Sans Serif for Other Languages, nothing changes—for instance, on this forum. Everything's still Times New Roman from the looks of it.
The Sans Serif font for Other Languages is set to Arial.
There's no Unicode entry in the list. The Other Languages is the closest I could find.
I have Options > Content > Advanced > Allow pages to choose their own fonts… unchecked.
I made similar changes for Western, and that worked—for pages detected as having ISO-8859-1 encoding.
Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?
<rant>
On a more general note, I think that the font setup in Firefox is so over-complicated. I personally want all my pages in a single font, and I don't care if some weird languages are displayed incorrectly with it. I bet that most people do want the same, even them who speak those weird languages. It's just a matter of picking one font that works for the languages you care about.
Now that might not work perfectly for everybody so there should be an advanced option—an ability to add overrides. It should be similar to how it works now but the list of overrides should be user-customizable and '''empty by default.''' So that we regular people don't bother ourselves with encodings and languages we're never going to use.
I wonder if I'm the only one who's disappointed with FF's font settings. Couldn't find anything on this topic on the 'net.
</rant>'''Xircal:''' this does not seem to be the case. When I go to Options > Content > Advanced > Other Languages I can see that Proportional is set to Sans Serif, and that Sans-Serif is set to Arial. The following line is also in my about:config:
font.default.x-unicode user set string sans-serif
'''cor-el:''' yes this is the address. While on this page, if I go to View > Character Encoding, the active selection is Unicode (UTF-8).
'''Edit:''' if I manually change this site's encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1) the font changes to that I specified for Western encoding in Advanced font options. -
Arial Unicode font for Tamil, etc.?
Looking for some style alternatives to the InaiMathi font included in OS X for the Tamil language, I noted at the the Gallery of Unicode Fonts that the Arial Unicode font includes Tamil characters, and remembered that that font is now included with OS X (10.5). I checked with Character Palette and indeed the Tamil characters are there, but they aren't recognized as equivalent to those in InaiMathi. And when I try to change some Tamil words in a document from InaiMathi to Arial Unicode, nothing happens.
I don't understand a lot about Unicode, but I know the Arial Unicode font has been around for a while (it was more or less the original effort to create a single Unicode font including all the major alphabetic scripts), and don't understand why it would contain the Tamil character set but not work for that script. It doesn't seem to work for Tibetan either, though it contains that character set as well. In fact, according to Character Palette, it seems about 90% of Arial Unicode is "character variants" that "won't display correctly". What's it for, then, anyone have any idea?+I have always thought Windows fonts cannot be used for display. Could you describe how you use Character Palette to do that?+
Well, not "display" in the sense of opening a file using an OpenType font on the Mac and seeing it display properly. What I do in Character Palette with an OpenType font like Sanskrit2003 is scroll through the font to find the elements I want and double-click them to enter them in a document. Of course this workaround is feasible only for the occasional word, not for whole sentences or paragraphs. I'm not a big time user of any of this, so I can manage for the occasional word I want.
+The reason they do this is because a lot of documents and web pages could specify Arial in them and users would get the idea that OS X does not support Devanagari, Tamil, Tibetan, etc unless they switch the font, which is impossible in Safari.+
Yeah, I can see the reason; but wouldn't it be easier in the long run to just enable OpenType fonts so everyone can use the same fonts? And it is annoying that you can't specify fonts in Safari like in Camino.
+I agree, but have doubts this will happen soon. Perhaps more likely is an app like Mellel which does OpenType could be expanded to cover these scripts.+
Several years ago the developer of Mellel assured me that v.2 would support Indic scripts. But it never happened.
+In the meantime, OpenOffice/X11 does work for display I think.+
Yes, OpenType fonts can be used in OpenOffice/X11 (which is no longer being developed, BTW, now that there's a native OS X version). But not AAT fonts.

Indeed, though much of it is over my head. I just want to be able to use the same fonts for Indic languages as everyone else, just as I can in Chinese, etc. -

Changing preferred font types for each language separately in Safari
Hi, I'm wondering in Safari->Preference->Appearance, you can change the default fonts for your main language, which is most likely English.
However, if I want to change font types for each specific language, e.g. Japanese or Traditional Chinese, how could I do that? I assume that if I change in the Appearance menu, it's global to all languages (e.g. English)?
Just to illustrate my question, in Firefox, I can go to Firefox->Preference->Content-> Fonts&Colors->Advanced, then I can change the font types for each language separately.
How do I do similar things in Safari in Leopard? Thanks.

Message was edited by: nmunsBut it seems very weird that for all the beautiful font types in Mac OS, the users are only stuck with the default font type only?
Perhaps, but it's just an example of how different browsers and apps offer different features. You should use the browser that works best for you. While FireFox may be good for that feature, it can't display some languages, like Hindi, correctly at all.
It is possible to change the font using a custom style sheet, which you can select via the advanced item in Safari preferences, but I don't think there is any way to do this on the basis of language.
What language are you specifically interested in changing the default font for? If you are getting the wrong kind of font for CJK (for example, seeing Japanese character types instead of the Chinese ones in Chinese text), this might be fixable by changing the language order in system prefs/international/languages. -
Web fonts for non-Roman languages
The Add Web Fonts dialog in Muse makes it easy for me to find fonts for English and other languages that use the Roman writing system. I need to find fonts for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Thai, and possibly other systems too.
Is there a way to search for such fonts, and to preview fonts in the language in which they will be used?no because they're not avalible, i think. if live text doesn't matter to you you can just use the fonts localy on your computer and muse will generate a picture of the text area using that non roman font. else if you know your way around code you can just replace the fonts in the css. as for writing in arabic, it'll probably have the same problem as writing in hebrew where muse might align right but you can't set a text box to a RTL direction which means that whatever you write in websafe fonts (if they even exsist, i've no idea) will display in LTR direction. which you can go on and change later in css per text box. another thing you might want to remember before writing in arabic selecting some very spesific font is that since the text boxes turn to images you won't be able to change the direction later on because it's no longer live text.
hope it helps. -

How do I change the default font for foot/end notes in Pages 09?
The fonts for notes in Pages seems fixed to Helvetica, even when the font for the body has been changed. I've been able to save the font for the body by saving it as a tempate, but it doesn't seem to work for the notes. Any help?
looked several times in the index.xml describing the docs.
A new note descriptor starts with :
<sf:p sf:style="kSFWPFootnoteTextStyleIdentifier">
If we change something to the note attributes the app replace the default style by a custom one. For instance, it may be :
<sf:p sf:style="SFWPParagraphStyle-68">
My first attempt was to insert a font descriptor in the default style.
Alas, for the app, such descriptor is pure garbage and it delete it.
Second attempt was to try to find the descriptor of the font used by default.
At last, I discovered that the app use in fact the font described by the resouirce named : FONT_Helvetica in the Blank template.
I choose to use HoeflerText-Regular so I applied this scheme.
(1) navigate to the file
Macintosh HD:Applications:iWork '09:Pages.app:Contents:Resources:Templates:Blank.template:Contents:Resources:fr .lproj:Localizable.strings
(2) to play safety, duplicate it
(3) drag it on the Desktop bercause the System don't allow us to edit it.
(4) When it's on the desktop, if you installed the developers tools double click the file's icon.
If you didn't, drag & drop its icon on TextEdit's one.
(5) Near the bottom, you will find the line :
"FONT_Helvetica" = "Helvetica";
edit it as :
"FONT_Helvetica" = "HoeflerText-Regular";
(6) Save the file on the Desktop,
(7) Move it back in its original folder.
I described the process for the French language (which use fr.lproj)
For other languages, replace fr.lproj by the item of this liost matching your language :
da.lproj
de.lproj
en.lproj
es.lproj
fi.lproj
fr.lproj
it.lproj
ja.lproj
ko.lproj
nl.lproj
no.lproj
pl.lproj
pt_PT.lproj
pt.lproj
ru.lproj
sv.lproj
zh_CN.lproj
zh_TW.lproj
Have fun.
Oops, of course Pages is supposed to be closed when you do that.

Hello, were I can get the different Cyrillic Fonts for Pages?
Razamanaz
You don't need any specific Cyrillic fonts for Pages, virtually all OSX fonts have Cyrillic.
Just set your keyboard to whatever Cyrillic language you are using:
+System Preferences > Personal > International > Russian should already be in the list > Move it to the top of the list+
If you need any other keyboards:
+International > Languages > Edit List… > check the languages you want+
For more quality Cyrillic fonts, any of the major font publishers' Open Type (otf) collections will do, with Parachute Fonts particularly specialising in Cyrillic with suberb designs.

Well, it looks like support for Asian Languages in Dynamic
Textfields wasn't included in this version as well. I have a simple
flash file embeded in an html file with 2 text boxes. Here's the
code I'm using:
var strJapanese = "あらわせて"
var strChinese = "我想你";
japanese_txt.text = strJapanese;
chinese_txt.text = strChinese;
I currently have these fonts installed in the \Windows\Fonts\
directory:
mingliu.ttc
msgothic.ttc
but all I see is a bunch of squares in the text boxes. I have
verified that my pocket pc can use these fonts in other programs.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
BackBayChefI used both the options but no one helps. Check the images for the understanding the problam. I try Arial unicode ms as other font but it does give correct visiblity of font.
tell some another option.
