Fonts from OSX to Classic

Hi,sorry, but I just can't seem to find the info I need in the discussions ongoing...hope this isn't too remedial.
I need to use a full version of Palatino in Pagemaker, which is a Classic App. The full version of Palatino (meaning, Palatino Bold, Palatino Italic and Palatino Bold Italic show separately in the Font Menu) exists in the OSX fontbook. I have tries to install, drag and copy it to the Classic Fontbook and to the Classic System Folder, but the font does not show up in its separate guises in the Classic menus...just as Palatino. Any ideas? According to the Fontbook, the fonts are validated in both Classic and OSX (and enabled, of course). If this is not possible to do on the 'intuitive' level, is there a conversion program that can be used? I appreciate in advance any help on this at all!!
Thanks,
Debbie

The fonts that come with OSX (Palatino.dfont) are not compatible with OS 9. You need the postscript or Truetype face of the font for OS 9.

Is it possible to load OSX on my Powerbook G3 and print OS 9.1 based applications with a printer designed to run only on OSX? I want to keep my OS 9 applications, run in the classic environment, but is this worth the possible troubles? New printers are only compatible with OSX!

I'd use 9.2.2 if I were you. 9.22 works better in Classic. Which PowerBook G3 do you have? Early ones can't run OS X beyond 10.2.8 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Some not-so-early ones can't go beyond 10.3.9 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Later models can run Tiger.
    based applications with a printer
designed to run only on OSX?
I've never tried, but... in Tiger it might be possible because Apple changed the way Classic prints. In Tiger, Classic prints as if the printer was a laser printer using LaserWriter 8. The LW8 driver hands off the print job to the OS X printer, which then prints normally. (Yes, even color inkjets.) I suppose that this should work even if there is no OS 9 printer installed... but I haven't tried it. If it doesn't work, well, there's not much that will be done about it at this late date.
OS X before Tiger pretty much will require that Classic have working drivers. I had mixed experience getting printers to work in Classic before Tiger. In Tiger it's very simple.

This depends on how much printing you do from OS 9/Classic.
    New printers are
    only compatible with OSX!
Some new printers are OS X-only. Many still ship with OS 9 drivers. How much longer this will be true is not known, but is not likely to be long. If I had to print using OS 9, I would buy a printer I know works with OS 9 and is likely to last a while. Hint: this is unlikely to be a cheap printer. Second hint: I would do this quickly. Third hint: I'd think very, very, VERY hard about replacing as many OS 9 apps with OS X apps as I could. The end of OS 9/Classic, as an officially supported Apple technology, is in sight. OS 9 has not been able to run from new Macs for years now, and if Apple keeps its promise to move its entire line to Intel by the end of the year, then soon there will no longer be new Macs which can run Classic, either. There may/may not be a 3rd-party solution which allows OS 9 or something resembling Classic to run on Intel, but I'm not holding my breath. Furthermore, I suspect that OS X 10.5 will be the last OS X version to support Classic, even on PPC.

  • FONTS on OSX 10.4 And Under Classic (System 9 )

Okay - Ya' all be gentle. Remember - there are no STUPID questions. I'm running a new G5 but have lots of earlier stuff and a very large file of FONTS on my old - very old - G3 - system 9.2. Classic seems to be running fine but the fonts available in the classic environment are very limited. I thought I would just copy my fonts into the system 9 - System - Fonts folder. I'm wrong!
When I try to open System 9 - System Folder it refuses telling me System is being used by System 10. I've tried shutting down Classic and get the same results.
Anyway - this old dog would be most grateful if someone knows how I get my old familiar system 9.2 fonts installed in the system 9 (Classic) operating system on my shiny new G5. It seems to me that I have to have TWO system font folders - one for 10.4.3 which is fine and one for system 9.2 or Classic. Since I have YEARS of Pagemaker files archived and since Pagemaker is still system 9 based I really need a bit of help here. Thanks.

You're right. That's precisely where you should put any fonts which you want to use with Classic.
OS X sees fonts in seven places:
1 System/Library/Fonts. System fonts live here. You cannot add or remove fonts from this folder.
2 Library/Fonts. Fonts which can be accessed by all OS X users live here. Put a font there, all users (except Classic users) can use it. Apple includes several fonts in that folder. Fonts placed there can be removed at will. Fonts can be added to that folder at will. Fonts in folders will show properly.
3 System Folder/Fonts. This is the OS 9/Classic fonts folder. Fonts can be added or deleted at will, so long as you don't delete the System fonts (Chicago, Geneva, etc.) and so long as you don't drop fonts in folders in there. Fonts in that folder are visible to Classic users, and to all OS X users. Fonts elsewhere may not be visible to Classic users, depending on which font manager you use.
4 <user>/Library/Fonts. This is the personal fonts folder for a particular OS X user. Fonts in that folder are visible to him, only. They are not usually visible to Classic users.
5 Network/Library/Fonts. If you have a file server, fonts placed in the network fonts folder will be visible to all users who can log onto that network.
6 <application support folder>. Some applications, notably from Adobe and Microsoft, drop fonts in private fonts folders. They can see them, but no other applications can. Microsoft now drops 77 fonts into your <user>/Library/Fonts folder the first time you launch Office 2004 without asking permission. (Yes, this annoys me.)
7 your font management application, if any, may use a font folder of its own. Linotype's Font Explorer X, for instance, generates a folder in your <user> folder named Font Explorer X and drops the fonts it knows about and which aren't system fonts in there. (It asks first. I like this.)
When I try to open System 9 - System Folder it
refuses telling me System is being used by System 10.
    Sounds like a permissions problem.
I've tried shutting down Classic and get the same
    results.
Classic's not the problem. You don't have permission to access that folder for some reason. Run Disk Utility, fix permissions. And make sure that when you want to change fonts, you're logged in as an admin user, not a normal user. (In the Accounts pane of System Preferences, does your user have Admin privs? If not, you're not going to be allowed to change certain settings. Period.)

Pagemaker will never be updated to OS X. InDesign may be able to open some Pagemaker files. In the meantime, you need those fonts in Classic.
    Thanks.

  • How do YOU manage fonts in OSX?

I have not yet found the magic solution that lets me reliably manage large font libraries in OSX.
If anyone has got a solution, or is even merely coping, please pass on some tips.
    Thanks,
    P.

I have tried Font Book more than once. It is extremely slow, last shot a few days ago it sat hours without showing any signs of progress until I force quit it. This totally screwed my fonts, particularly in Safari.
This is consistent behavior for Font Book when you're trying to handle a lot of fonts. It just isn't very good at that task. Every single font you open with Font Book gets copied to the Fonts folder you chose in its preferences. Since both are considered "always on" folders by the underlying Unix system, Font Book also keeps a database of all installed fonts to determine which should be enabled and which are not. If this database gets damaged, fonts that Font Book says are enabled still don't show up in lists, causes long hangs at startup and other problems.
I did an archive and reinstall of OSX which introduced further problems, now some fonts are missing that were there before and others that aren't part of v10.5.6 seem to be installed.
You can reinstall just the fonts that came with OS X without having to resort to an Archive and Install. See my article which baltwo first linked to above. Any other fonts you've added should have remained where they were. They probably are still there, but a damaged Font Book database is likely keeping them from appearing. You can reset Font Book. Follow the steps in Undoing Font Book. Note that you will lose any font collections you have created. Doing this will also clear the font cache files for your user account. Since Font Book's database is reset, all fonts will in your Fonts folders will be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
I have also tried Suitcase (not for a while) it was also slow and somewhat unpredictable.
Versions X and X1 weren't the best, but Fusion is very stable.
Linotype Font Xchange looks nice but I can't figure out how it is interacting with fonts in Font Book and there seems to be issues with open fonts not showing up in applications.
I have to assume you mean FontExplorer X, since there is no such title as Font Xchange. Big mistake though that a lot of people make. Font Book is just another font manager. It has no special ties to the OS. If you do decide to use a different manager, delete the Font Book application from your hard drive. It's always best to have one, and ONLY one font manager on your system at a time.
Truth to tell I have never overcome the problems of font management in OSX. Is there no way of at minimum just coping with the problems of OSX fonts and at best getting back to the relatively smooth management of Mac Classic?
I find font management just as easy in OS X as OS 9 was. Well, once I learned why there were so many different folders all called Fonts, and why they are separated the way they are. Once you get that, it's a piece of cake.
I believe that is what we are supposed to have, which is the fonts linked (via a Font manager), but not open, and either opened as we need them manually or automatically as the application calls for them.
Agreed. Both Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontExplorer X work that way (actually, you need to tell FEX to use that method). While FEX is free, I still much prefer Suitcase. The biggest reason being that it ensures the same version of a font will be used the next time you open a document in an application that supports auto activation. That I know of, FEX can't do that. It has an auto activate feature, but if you use a different version of Bookman, it can't tell the difference. It sees Bookman and assumes all is okay.
Also there is no way of knowing in some apps whether you have just opened a TrueType .otf or PostScript .otf.
Almost all professional apps tell you the difference. TrueType fonts will be shown with a blue double T icon. OpenType with its green and black letter O. Type 1 PostScript with a red letter A. The only confusion comes from OpenType. Those can be created in TrueType or PostScript versions. The PostScript ones have .otf as their extension. TrueType versions have the same .ttf extensions as the original TrueType fonts of years ago. While you can of course see the difference between them by file name, programs don't differentiate them. They both get the same green/black letter O icon in font lists. There's no way to tell if it's a TrueType or PostScript OpenType font from there.
I can not do what I did in Classic which is have all the font variations in one suitcase and open and close them in one click.
Both Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontExplorer X will open complete sets in one click.
You can download FEX and play around with it as much as you want, being free. If you want it to open fonts in place, just make sure when you first launch it to choose the option "Don't manage fonts" (or something like that). It's kind of a strange way to state the option, but that's the one you want. Suitcase Fusion 2 can be downloaded and used as a fully functional demo for 30 days. It's only method is to open fonts in place. That or open in place and add the fonts to its Vault (the default). I personally see no use for the Vault and use only the open fonts in place option.

    So yeah...
    I'm totally stumped now.
I feel like I've tried every method imaginable, but still no luck.
Printing from OSX 10.6.8 works just FINE.
On the server side, I'm running Windows Server 2008... there's only a local admin and a local user account.
Clients running OSX Lion 10.7.2 -- All updated.
Printer is an HP LaserJet P4010-4510 series.
Workstation is an iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Please help!!!
    --- Richard

LPD print service is not enabled by default in Server 2008. It can be enabled via the Print Serveer role, but I am remote and cannot confirm the exact setting.
    As for SMB, the error log is showing;
    Failed to connect to "smb://<username>:<password>@utlab-prsrv-02/"
So it would suggest that there is still an issue with the account detail you are using as you show you have tried this syntax at one stage. If you want to continue to create the queue using SMB rather than LPD then I recommend using the CUPS web page (http://127.0.01:631) to create the queue. This will allow you to enter the syntax exactly as the error message shows. From previous testing I found it was okay to just use the account name rather than domain/account name on a domain bound server.

  • Old fonts from System 7 & Mac OS 8 & OS 9: Safe to install in 10.6.4?

I've been accumulating fonts for years and years. I recently got a new MacBook Pro and it's now running 10.6.4.
I still have, backed up on an external drive, hundreds of freeware, shareware and pro-level fonts which I acquired way back in the distant past, some as early as System 7 -- the "Date created" column says they're dated starting 1992 and every year up through 2004. (There's also about 15 System 6-era fonts in there too going back to 1989, but I think I'm just going to trash those.)
My question: Is it "safe" to install these fonts on my 10.6.4 machine? Or could the ancient fonts cause some kind of operating system meltdown or panic or whatever?
Perhaps the OS 8 & OS 9 fonts are safe, but not the System 6 and System 7 fonts?
    Or all they all safe?
And even if they are safe to install: Will they work?
Lastly: What's the best way to install them? I see a new feature in OSX which I had never noticed until now is that if one double-clicks the font icon, a "Font Book" window pops up with an optional "Install Font" button at the lower right. By clicking that button, does Font Book physically move the font file to the proper place in the OSX system? Or...?
Any advice or insight into this problem would be most appreciated. I want to have access to all my old fonts (I still have many documents which make use of them) but I don't want to mess up my fresh new 10.6.4 system. Thanks.

My question: Is it "safe" to install these fonts on my 10.6.4 machine?
    Yes.
Or could the ancient fonts cause some kind of operating system meltdown or panic or whatever?
Only if they conflict with other fonts, or are corrupt.
Perhaps the OS 8 & OS 9 fonts are safe, but not the System 6 and System 7 fonts?
Anything from System 8 forward will work. System 6 used bitmapped fonts. These are not supported in OS X. System 7 and 7.5 though were a mix. There were both TrueType and bitmapped fonts. Only the TrueType fonts can be used.
It does depend on where you're reading about these old fonts. One site notes that TrueType fonts were introduced in System 7. Another states that there were TrueType fonts in System 6.
And even if they are safe to install: Will they work?
Yes. I have tons of old fonts; Mac TrueType from OS 9 and earlier, Type 1 PS fonts from way back, etc. They all work just fine.
What's the best way to install them?
The best way actually, with Font Book, is to not install them. Which I will explain per the next part:
"Font Book" window pops up with an optional "Install Font" button at the lower right. By clicking that button, does Font Book physically move the font file to the proper place in the OSX system?
If you look in Font Book's preferences, fonts you "install" can go to either the /Library/Fonts/ folder, or by default, the Fonts folder in your user account. What you really want to do is activate fonts "in place", which is to activate them from where they are instead of creating copies. Do this by creating a Library Set in Font Book rather than a normal set. Fonts added to a Library Set are activated in place.

  • Lots of problems in changeover from OSX to OS9

    Hi,
I have a G4 bought in 2001. It operates fine in OS9, but I recently got broadband, which isn’t compatible with OS9. Therefore I had to start using OSX and I have had nothing but problems since. Here is the list of problems:
    1. Internet Explorer regularly freezes or quits. I have tried to download both Safari and Firefox but my computer won’t open or install a ‘.dmg’ file. When I click on ‘get helper application’, a window opens to show my Internet Plug Ins folder, which is empty.
    2. If I shut down OSX, then start up again, the computer appears to boot up correctly. However, if I shut down from OSX and restart in OS9, I get the message ‘your computer did not shut down properly’.
    3. If I am in OS9 and select OSX as the start-up disk and click ‘Restart’, the computer shuts down instead of restarting. If I then push the start up button on the front of the tower, the computer begins to start up but then shuts down after about 30 secs.
    4. If I am in OSX and it freezes and I am forced to start it up with the button on the front of the tower, I do not get the message ‘your computer did not shut down properly. Disk First Aid will repair'.
    5. In OSX, Microsoft Word often freezes and I cannot exit the programme so I have to restart the computer forcibly.
    6. I cannot print from OSX, only from OS9.
    7. In OSX, in Outlook, if I attach a document from the Classic Environment to an e-mail, the recipient cannot open the attachment. I can move the document to the OSX desktop, but then I can’t print it without putting it back in the Classic Environment and going back to OS9 to print.
    8. In OSX, the CD drive won’t close when I press the ‘close’ button. It does however close in OS9.
I would welcome urgent advice on how to handle these problems.
    Many thanks, Suzie.
    G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi,
    I have a G4 bought in 2001. It operates fine in OS9,
but I recently got broadband, which isn’t compatible
    with OS9.
What kind of 'broadband'? Broadband should be compatible with OS 9. I know I used it when I had OS 9. What problems were you having.
Therefore I had to start using OSX
Which version of OS X? If you're using the version which shipped with your G4, that might be 10.0.x... which is Not Ready For Prime Time. In fact, 10.0.x is little more than a joke and is unusable. 10.1.x was at least usable, if slow; 10.2.x was a nice system. 10.3.x was much better, and 10.4.x better still.
I hope you have enough RAM. Running 10.1.x with less than 256 MB is not going to be enjoyable; ramp that up to at least 512 before trying 10.4.x.
    and I
have had nothing but problems since. Here is the
    list of problems:
    1. Internet Explorer regularly freezes or quits.
MSIE on OS X isn't very good. Get Firefox, or, if you have the right version of OS X, Safari.
    I
have tried to download both Safari and Firefox but my
computer won’t open or install a ‘.dmg’ file.
Save the file to disk, open it with DIsk Utility.
    When I
click on ‘get helper application’, a window opens to
show my Internet Plug Ins folder, which is empty.
I suspect that you're using 10.0.x and are finding out why that version is NRFPT.
    2. If I shut down OSX, then start up again, the
computer appears to boot up correctly. However, if I
shut down from OSX and restart in OS9, I get the
message ‘your computer did not shut down properly’.
I suspect you had Classic open, under 10.0.x, and didn't close it before shutting OS X down. This was not a good idea in 10.0.x.
    3. If I am in OS9 and select OSX as the start-up
disk and click ‘Restart’, the computer shuts down
instead of restarting. If I then push the start up
button on the front of the tower, the computer begins
to start up but then shuts down after about 30 secs.
I'm not sure what that is, but I suspect 10.0.x is misbehaving.
    4. If I am in OSX and it freezes and I am forced to
start it up with the button on the front of the
tower, I do not get the message ‘your computer did
not shut down properly. Disk First Aid will repair'.
You've got directory errors. Run Disk Utility or buy Disk Warrior and run that.
    5. In OSX, Microsoft Word often freezes and I cannot
exit the programme so I have to restart the computer
    forcibly.
Which version of Word? I suspect that you're using either 98 or 2001 under Classic. If that's the case, and you're running 10.0.x, it's not Word that's the problem, it's Classic, and the fix is to get a newer version of OS X.
    6. I cannot print from OSX, only from OS9.
Which printer are you trying to use? And do you have the Printer Center set up?
    7. In OSX, in Outlook, if I attach a document from
the Classic Environment to an e-mail, the recipient
cannot open the attachment. I can move the document
to the OSX desktop, but then I can’t print it without
putting it back in the Classic Environment and going
    back to OS9 to print.
This wasn't clear. You should be able to have a doc open from OS X or Classic, no problem. And if you can print in OS 9, you should be able to print in Classic.
    8. In OSX, the CD drive won’t close when I press the
‘close’ button. It does however close in OS9.
    It shouldn't do that.
I would welcome urgent advice on how to handle these
    problems.
    Many thanks, Suzie.

  • MS Office Mac wreaks havoc with arabic fonts on OSX

i always have this problem when installing the dreaded MS Office for Mac on any OSX system and that is that Arabic fonts that work fine start going haywire because MS Office Mac installs some funky corrupt fonts.
Does anyone know how to go back to the original pre-office installed fonts that came with OSX snow leopard? im guessing i have to use the install discs or something.
i've tried to selectively figure out what Office has installed and remove them and its a pain.
on a related note, will Office do fine if I dont allow it to install its own fonts on my system?

    tom -
i am not sure of the specifics but here's some info from a poster on a board:
"2) There is an entirely separate issue about viewing Arabic in Safari. Installing MS Office for Mac also installs Office fonts on your Mac. Two of those fonts (specifically Arial and Times New Roman) will corrupt Safari's ability to display Arabic properly and you will wind up with disjointed Arabic text like ? ? ? instead of ???
To fix this all you need to do is delete the offending fonts from your Mac (go to Library>Preferences>Fonts and simply trash Arial and Times New Roman. Your mac will then revert to using the original versions of those fonts that came with your system -- in other words, you'll still have access to the Arial font in Microsoft Word and other Office apps, but Safari will display Arabic correctly."
    http://www.emiratesmac.com/forums/arabic/604-writing-displaying-arabic-my-mac-3. html
and there's some useful information here as well http://www.smi.uib.no/ksv/ArabicMac.html .
are there any other font folders that i should time-machine restore besides the two aptly named ones i mentioned in /Library and /user/Library ?
and on a related note, there was an option in the custom settings of the MS Mac Office installation to install 'fonts' (or was it 'additional fonts' ?) that, in hindsight, maybe i should have unchecked. if i ever have to reinstall office one day i will pay more attention to this as well as have my fonts backed up for sure.

  • Fonts in OSX 10.5.4

When I attempted to load all my fonts onto my new black iMac 2008 (preloaded with 10.5), I discovered that since 10.4, Apple have included a system font called Helvetica Neue. As a designer I frequently make use of the Helvetica Neue font family from ITC, but now Fontbook will not allow me to load these, as they clash with the pre-loaded system fonts. I have heard bad things in the past from others who have tried to move system fonts in OSX and am loathed to try this, but is there any other way of being able to access my these fonts again?
    Roger

In order to avoid a font conflict between Apple's supplied fonts and the ones you need to use, you have to be willing to dig. See section 4 in my article, Font Management in OS X. It explains in detail what you need to do to use your preferred versions of Helvetica.

  • How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc?

How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc? My hardrive recently crashed and the photos on my ipod are the only copies I have! The photos were synced onto th ipod originally - not saved or copied as file transfer.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. I'm not sure which of the recovery tools can do photos offhand, but unless you chose the option to include full res. originals when you loaded the device then what they extract will be fairly low res. If you did opt for full res. then they should be visible on the iPod's drive when viewed in disk mode.

  • Can I play a movie from my ipod classic onto my ipad screen?

I have a 160 GM ipod classic that holds all my movies.  I would like to buy a 16 GM ipad 3 but I know it won't be able to hold my movies.  Can I stick with the 16 GB ipad 3 but play my movies on it from my ipod classic?  I want to buy a wifi ipad and not a 4G one so when I'm driving in the car and I want to show movies to my kids in the back I won't be able to access the icloud or dropbox, etc.  Can I connect my movies from my ipod classic directly to the ipad with a cord to watch them on the ipad?

So if I want to be able to watch all my movies or listen to all 50 GB of my songs I'll need to buy a more expensive 32 or 64 GB ipad and shuffle movies and songs in and out of it or else use the wifi and iCloud.  Is that correct? There's no way the ipad can access an external hard drive?
