Fonts in FCP

Fonts in the newest FCP are still problematic. Only truetype versions can be used, not postscript, and in the truetypefonts the built-in kerning is not taken literally, the letters are placed a bit more crampy. Boris is not correct too, so I have to make titles in Photoshop which knows how to handle fonts properly.
The silly thing is that DVD Pro in the same bundle uses postscript fonts just as they are intended, with the right spacing and correct kerning...

...Only truetype versions can be used, not postscript...
There are several utilities out there that will convert a Postscript Type 1 face into TrueType. This is what I do when I absolutely need a Postscript font in FCP or DVDSP.
I use an old copy of FontMonger in OS 9, but I'm sure you can find a more modern font conversion util with a little research.
Font management becomes a little challenging, but I have a special set in Fontbook named "TV Fonts" that I put all my TT duplicates into.
Then I only need to remember to turn them on and off as I go back and forth between "TV World" and "Graphic Design World."
No good util available for that, I'm afraid. Big orange post-it note on the corner of my monitor helps, though.
Oh yeah, make sure that neither FCP nor DVDSP is running when you add a new TT face. Actually, after you activate a new TT face in Font Book, I find it is a good Idea to restart or Logout/Login before attempting to use it in FCP or DVDSP.

  • Cyrillic fonts fo FCP

I've bought my iMac and FCE in Russia and Cyrillic fonts were pre-installed in my computer. In few days I will have to edit on Mac Book Pro that my client brings from UK. He told me that the computer has no Cyrillic fonts. But we will need to make Russian titles. I think the basic fonts may be installed from Mac OS discs. Isn't?
    Any other idea?

Thank you! And do you know if Lucida Grande can be used in FCP?
Sorry, I don't have FCP to test, but I would be surprised to find that the main system font used by OS X was not available to FCP. Are there fonts supplied by Apple with with OS X that do not work in that app?

  • Font Issues FCP

I just upgraded to a MacbookPro and brought over everything from my Powerbook, but for some reason one of my most important otf fonts (yes, it isn't true type) will no longer show up in my projects. Myriad Pro Semibold Condensed won't properly work on my system even though I put it in both my Library and the main HDD's library. Any thoughts? Is this a Leopard issue? That is the only variable...the font works fine in all other programs.

It works in Boris. The issue is that I need to put a bug on my videos to have on my public website. My identity is with that particular font, so I need to have a text generator that can make a semi-opaque bug for my website. If the FCP text generator is a bust, what are my other (free) options?

  • I'm going through **** here, using a spanish key board, to lay down fonts, using FCP X, each and every time the "accent" mark is need over a letter, FCP X shuts down...this is the most feckless system I've worked with in years!!

I'm going through **** here. Have a client who needs a spanish version of their corporate presentation. Got the Spanish keyboard up. Each and every time I need to use an accent above a letter...FCP X shuts down. What is going on with this system? The most feckless piece of soffware ever!! Ready to pull out the old tower G4 and cut on the FCP 7...

Okay will do...using the Canadian English Version...
Also, as you well know in Spanish, the "accent" does "slice" either way. Over vowels, such as "a" and "o"...
If you have any more advice...I'll gratefully take it...and a much appreciated "thank you"

  • FCP font question

I'm using a Chalet font for a project and there are 10 versions of this font.
FCP seems to pick the one I don't need.
Here's the deal...I have to use Suitcase which final cut does an ok job of seeing most of them. I have the font that I need activated in Suitcase and the others deactivated, but in Final Cut text the pulldown of fonts just displays Chalet when I need Chalet-NewYorkSeventy.otf
Is it hung up on the hyphen?
    4x2.5 G5 3.5GB .5 TB storage Geforce 6600 dual 20" CD's   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FCSuite HD 5.0.4 Sony FX-1 & M10U

I'd say your first course of action would be to deactivate suitcase and install the font with font book to be sure the whole family is live to your system.
Failing that I have had FCP treat some fonts as duds which leads to fonts either not being available or not being able to change the font fron the default Lucida grande.
If the fonts are postscripts and quite old this can cause problems might be worth looking on versiontracker for a conversion utility and convert them to either truetype or .dfont
    Hope that helps.

  • Fonts in final cut pro...

Hi I'm fairly new to Macs in general and very new to FCP. I'm using FCP 5.4 and just learning the ropes. My question is this when creating a piece of text you have the option to change the font. On my system or set up anyways there is no way i can see what the font will look like until i have changed it. Is there any (free) way to make the font names appear in the font style? or barring that does anyone know where I might be able to print out a list of the fonts that FCP uses in the font style itself? I've found a few lists of all the mac fonts but there all listed in the same font. any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks in advance,
    Brucey Bizzit

Actually, Final Cut Pro does show you a typeface preview in the text entry box, but it's so tiny as to be almost useless.
Not all applications show you a preview list in the typeface style. I seem to remember Freehand did, maybe MS Office too -I don't have either of them.
Other than learning about typefaces, you can go to Edit > Select All in FontBook then choose File > Print > PDF which will give you an onboard .pdf document with each typeface printed in its style.
If you have plenty of paper, or something against trees, print as normal.

  • Loading fonts into FInal Cut Pro 5.0.4

Is it possible to load addtional fonts into FCP 5.0.4?
I loaded the font into all the font folders I could find and still they have not shown up in the Final Cut pro fonts? I restarted twice?
Am I missing some hidden file that I must load the fonts into?
    Thanks for your help

There is no provision for loading fonts into FCP. Use FontBook to add fonts; choose to make the fonts available to all users so they'll be installed in .[boot drive]/Library/Fonts.
But even with that, FCP won't see just any font. FCP seems to be partial to TrueType Data Fork fonts.

  • Install Font

Hi there, I have a problem with a special font.
I want to work with "Helvetica bold condensed" and "Helvetica condensed".
I put both font into the folder "All users/Library/Fonts",
but when I open Boris Title 3D, the "Helvetica condensed" Version isn´t
available. But instead some other versions of Helvetica, like "Helvetica Ultra Light".
But this Ultra Light isn´t in my font folder.
Does anyone knows from which folder especially Boris title 3D is receiving the fonts ?
When I look in the normal Text-Tool there aren´t these other fonts as well.
    Thanks for helping !

I am trying to drop russian subtitles onto an edited piece. DV/DVCPRO- NTSC The font charcoalY.dfont exists on my mac but FCP doesn't reference it. How do I import that font into FCP?

  • Fonts in Italics

Hey, I'm having a problem with most of my fonts in FCP. The ones I use most often (Arial, Century Gothic, etc.) are permanently in Italics whenever I try to use them. If I click the Italics tab, they skew a little more to the right. All my fonts work fine in my other programs (Motion/LiveType), but I can't figure out how to fix this problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

This is the most annoying drawback to the FCP text generator that has been around since version 1. This generator totally ignores all the family variations in a font, and simulates the bold and italic variations. As far as I can tell, it uses the first font file that appears alphabetically in the finder as "plain".
    You have two options -
    1. disable the italic version of the font in Font Book
    2. Use Boris instead

  • Font importing issue.

I've been asked by client to use 'Segoe' font in a project which they emailed me first as a file and then zipped. However, whenever I import it into Font Book it doesn't appear. Can anyone help? Or suggest a pre-installed font in FCP that is similar?
    Many thanks.

They probably sent you the windows version.
Do a search on Font companys' websites - I had to do this a few years ago and, if I remember correctly, I was able to find a site that allowed me to search for "similar to" fonts.
    Good luck.

  • Font Import Issue

This is probably really simple BUT, I have a font that I downloaded, it is available on all of my font lists (iMovie, Photoshop) but not when I go to create a lower third title in FCP. It does, however, show up when I create a title crawl.
Which folder do I need to copy the font to in order to use it within the basic FCP title tool?
thanks again for all of your genius power...
PS the font is unicorn.ttf if that helps at all

Fonts normally go in [mac system drive]/Library/Fonts. Since it works in other applications it may be a font that FCP doesn't like. Try using Title 3D or LiveType to create the lower third.

  • Font Book & Access for Applications

I have been having some problems with my fonts. My 1st question is whats the difference between computer font list and user font list?
Some of my programs like PS do not have access to all of the fonts. Photoshop cs5 has more fonts than ps cs6. Its the same with the 2 after effects programs i have. Smoke has a different amount of fonts from FCP. Pages has access to about 85% of the fonts.
How do i make every font available to every program?
    Running 10.7.5 on a Macpro quad 3.0 / 12gigs ram

You can download Apps smaller than 10MB from the 3G network.
You can download them from any wireless network.
I don't understand the iTunes question.
You need an iTunes account in order to download the apps, if you
don't have one you wont be able to download them, even the free ones.
You don't have to have it installed on your computer but you do need the account.
    Hope that helps

  • Importing Photoshop jpgs into FCP

I am wondering if there is something I can do in FCP to some photoshop jpgs I've imported to make the text less fuzzy? The jpgs look great when still, but when you press play, the text loses its crispness and fuzzes out. A filter I can add? Something I need to do in Photoshop before importing into FCP?
    Cheers,
    april

Thanks to all of you who provided helpful answers, I really appreciate it. I didn't realize about the lossy issue, great to know!! I tried the deleting of text in PS and adding it in FCP, but I'm limited with the design aspect of fonts in FCP, not being able to get near the effects I can in PS, so would rather try another solution. Yes, DV and DV-sized jpegs. When viewed on a TV, the text is still fuzzy though not as bad as on the MAC - so I will try lossless PS formats.
(Some of you need to work on etiquette, you come across as fairly rude in your posts. I apologize if I didn't provide ample information, all you have to do is ask for clarification - I wasn't sure what else would be helpful to know. Or don't answer, as it appears painful for you to help novices. Take a deep breath!)

  • Trouble importing a font

I have a font loaded on my mac which is working fine in most applications including PS CS3 etc, but I need to use it for my client in some titles.
Trouble is that when I try via the text tab under effects or via Boris, the tyeface is not showing on the drop down list of fonts available to me.
Can anyone help with a solution as the client will not allow use of a different font.
The font is called No 1993 btw if thats any help.
    Thanks
    stuart

There are many fonts that FCP's built-in text generators won't work with. While the Boris generators do work with many more, it doesn't work with all of them. You may have to use Photoshop or After Effects to create the graphic.
But first make sure the font has been properly intalled. Open Font Book and install from there. then relaunch FCP and try Boris again.
