Fonts in font book don't show up in applicaitons

Hi,
I have installed many fonts from discs and online sites that are trustworthy. I install the fonts and they get put into my font book, but they are not available in my applications. I have some fonts that show up in one area and others that do not. I must have fonts stored in multiple places, but I don't know where. I have made sure that I checked the box that installed fonts are for the computer so all users have access. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

ucdgrad95,
fonts are typically installed into either a user’s ~/Library/Fonts folder (if they were installed for use only for the user who’d installed them) or into the /Library/Fonts folder (if they were installed for use by all users). If you look in both of these folders, do you see all of the fonts which you’ve installed from your discs and your trustworthy online sites? Are any of the fonts from those discs and online sites working well in all of your apps, or do all of those fonts not appear in all of your apps which use TrueType fonts?

  • New fonts look fine in Font Book don't work in apps

I need someone's help. I understand that to install new fonts I can either bring them into my font book (and chose whether they apply to a user or to the system) or can drag them directly into library/fonts or user/library/fonts. I am looking for some new foreign language fonts (e.g. hebrew - cursive, for example). I found some possibilities - ttf fonts - downloaded them, put them into my font book, they validated fine and within the font book they look right (i.e. as they are supposed to). I then quit the font book and go into my app, and it's not happening. When I go into MS word (2008), they don't all appear in the various menus (e.g. I made a font collection for one set, and only two appear in that collection), and when I go to use the ones that appear the font does not look much different from the latin alphabet font that was there before. So, I then tried Apple Mail and, while all the fonts appear in the font collection folder, when I choose any of them, same thing, my test letters are still in the same alphabet - size and intensity a little different, that's all.
Someone told me that for MS Office that there is a separate folder somewhere for office fonts - is that true - where is that? Also, why aren't any of my fonts doing what they're supposed to do in a native Mac application, Apple Mail, despite the fact that they look as advertised in my font books?
    Frustrated & confused...

my test letters are still in the same alphabet
To generate non-Latin text in a modern OS you can't just change the font, you need to change the keyboard layout. Go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for Hebrew or whatever you want, plus the box for "show input menu in finder." Then select Hebrew in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder and type.
You need to make sure you use Unicode fonts. Also MS Word does not yet support correct Hebrew, so use another app. For that script, Mellel is the best. See the applications section of this note:

  • My fonts that are installed in Font Book are not showing up in Microsoft Word. Can someone help me fix this problem?

    Hello!
I am needing some help. I own a Mac Book Air with OS X 10.7.5. This computer belongs to the school district I teach for, so I do not have permission to do a huge wipe that would uninstall programs such as Word. When I first got my computer, I added all my fonts. I did this by putting them into a fonts folder. The fonts were not all showing up in Microsoft Word, so I was told to use Font Book. All of my fonts show up and are installed in Font Book; however, they do not show up in Word. I have restarted my computer. All the fonts are validated. I have tried almost everything I could think of after researching answers online. Another problem--my bullet points are messed up. When I click the bullet button, instead of an open circle it's an open rectangle. This doesn't concern me as much, but I thought it might help as a clue as to what is wrong. The fonts also do not show up in the Format > Font box.
Also, I want to point out that my colleagues, using the exact same computer, network, etc, are able to download and use all the fonts. They have tried to fix mine, also.
Any help is much appreciated! Maybe there is some way to wipe out my fonts and start clean?
    Thanks so much!

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

  • Installed fonts (mac Default font) in my Font Book doesn't show up in photoshop  CC

Hello, I'm in trouble with fonts.
    I'm using mac OS X 10.9.4 mavericks.
I want to use 'HanziPen SC' which is already installed in my Font book but it doesn't show up in photoshop CC.
It has been default font since mavericks, maybe.
And I have same situation in AI as well.
I've already tried to clear cache and reboot photoshop but it didn't work to me.
    Does anyone help me?

    Thank you for your kindness!
    It was solved!
But in my case, the reason why it didn't show up was veeeery stupid...
    I checked out Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CC/CT Font Cache/Adobe_Fnt_OSFont.lst
Then, there was 'HanziPen SC' and I found out surprising fact!
    Its Writing script was 'Chinese'!!
So I couldn't find 'HanziPen' even though I typed 'HanziPen'.
It has been shown up in Chinese...
What I did is to over write WritingScript,FamilyNameNative,StyleNameNative,FullNameNative to Japanese.
I don't know why it happened to me at all. but anyway, finally I was able to  see the one in photoshop CC.
Again, Thank you for your kindness. If you didn't suggested about cache files, I might have not found out the answer.
    Thank you!!!!

  • Some font weights don't show up in Illustrator drop-down menu

This problem is happening with more than one font (on a Mac, OS10.6.6, CS5), but as an example:
I have the Futura font family, all weights from Light to Extra Bold Oblique, in my Fonts folder in my Home Library folder.  When I select type, and choose Futura in the Font drop-down menu, only 4 weights of the font appear in the drop-down sub-menu, rather than all of those installed....

I have the very same problem. Though, it also occurs after logging out and back in.
To clarify, "Front Window" and "Menu Bar" speakable items don't show up after login, even though they are selected in the Speech Preferences. Toggling Speakable Items off/on will make them appear. However, they are suppose be available immediately.
    How to test it out:
    1. Go to the Speech Preferences in System Preferences.
    2. Within the Speech Recognition tab, choose the Commands tab and select "Menu Bar" and "Front Window". I have selected all command sets in that list.
    3. Turn on Speakable Items.
    4. In the round Speech Feedback window that appears, there is a button at the bottom with a triangle pointing down. This is its menu. You can open the Speech Commands window from this menu and see a list of command sets, such as "Speakable Items", "Application Switching", "Address Book", and so on. In particular, there should be "Front Window" and "Menu Bar" since they have been selected in Speech Preferences.
    5. Logout.
    6. Login.
    7. The Speech Feedback window should appear after login. You might also have the Speech Commands window if you didn't close it before logout. If not, then open the Speech Commands window from the menu on the Speech Feedback window.
    8. Notice the command sets for "Front Window" and "Menu Bar" do not appear in the listing.
    9. Open Speech Preferences in System preferences. Choose the Speech Recognition tab, and then the Commands tab within that, if not already chosen. Notice the "Front Window" and "Menu Bar" command sets are selected even though they did not appear in the Speech Commands Window.
    10. Perform the workaround: toggle Speakable Items off/on. Notice the "Front Window" and "Menu Bar" commands will now show up in the Speech Commands window.
    11. Feel free to repeat steps 5 - 10 as often as you like. sigh 8-|

  • Font book doesn't show a preview of a newly installed font

I purchased the postscript ITC font Zapf Dingbat. It appears in the Font Book list, but there isn't a preview. It works fine in Illustrator, put it appears as Helvetica in Text Edit. Quark Xpress lists it in the font menu, but it doesn't appear in the document on screen. It does, however, print correctly and show up in PDFs I create from the Quark document. Any ideas?
Power Mac 1.8 Dual   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

None of my fonts show up when they are first added. I just get a blank.
Another problem - I added and used Times New Roman PS on Monday and used it in a document -
Tuesday came back to same document, checked Font Book and the font was still active - except it wasn't. It defaulted on printing. Rechecked Font Book and it was activated. So I deactivated it and reactivated it and it worked. Why?
We also have to change Macs here because one Font Book will not use Helvetica today and another will. Tomorrow will be a different story. Why can't Font Book be reliable?

  • Digital Editions 2.0 on two computers but new books don't show

I just installed Digital Editions 2.0.1 on my PC.  I had already installed 2.0 on my notebook.  I then downloaded some e-books using the PC.  These new books do not appear on my notebook version of Digital Editions.  How do I get the two co-ordinated?

Sorry, ADE 3.0  cannot sync books over the cloud. You have to transfer the books from one laptop to other via some storage device or through mail.

  • Font Book's font title show different style

    Hi mac people,
I have create a font family, will publish to sell, but when i test it in the font book,
in the information page, the title"ABC regular", use different style instead of my created style, other place have no problem.
    Why is this happening?
    How can I solve it?
I create the fonts set by using a photo app to create the shape then use inkscape to convert the shape to sag file, then use font forge to create ttf file.
Please help, really need answer soon!!!

Hello and thank you for your reply.
Yes, I used PostScript Type 1 fonts since MacOS 9 through MacOS X 10.5. I could see Cyrillic chars in Font Book (MacOS X 10.5 ver.), but they don't show in MacOS X 10.6 version of Font Book. Actually, I don't have any problem with using them in third party applications. It's just nice to preview a font before you choose to use on a page. Can't do it in 10.6. Other third party applications that allow preview a font, also don't show Cyrillic characters if a font is PostScript Type 1.
    Thanks.

  • Font Book not showing in ms word

  • Font Book problems under 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5 and completing Software Update immediately to 10.5.5, I have noticed some quirks in Font Book. I did not use Font Book after the installation/upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5 until 10.5.5 was operational.
    1) I have over 400 font families, but all but about 50 are normally inactivated. The new Font Book is slow as molasses to show any fonts the first time it is opened on a fresh boot. Former versions would start showing some of the fonts and add to the list as the files were read from the library by Font Book. Now it sits and sits until all have been read to display anything (close to 15 seconds). At least before one knew if it was working and not just showing a spinning beach ball. Doesn't seem a change for the better.
    2) Font Book used to show all fonts quickly once it had been opened under a current startup of system. Now there is a lag in the display (8-10 sec), but not nearly as bad as current initial openings, but longer than the previous system version.
This next point is REALLY annoying:
    3) When inactivating a duplicate of a font face (i.e. inactivating the TT version when want only the PS1), I can click on the style to be inactivated and before I can get down to click to inactivate BOTH styles become highlighted so I will deactivate/activate both if I don't watch what is happening. This happens virtually every time I do this procedure and never occurred in versions prior to 10.5.5. (Since I didn't use anything on the computer until I updated to 10.5.5, I don't know at what point of the 10.5 cycle this might have begun.)

I am in publishing and have a true postscript laser printer. Font are not just regular type, but phonetic, language and music fonts. Given a choice, I will take PS over TT anytime and I have a large investment in Adobe fonts..
Bad fonts aren't installed and I disable duplications when they occur with PS/TT/OT fonts.
I still make the point that I am using exactly the same fonts that were used with 10.4.11 - nothing added or deleted, the same ones active or inactive. Font Book did NOT behave this way until I upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11.
(For those that don't remember their history, TT was developed by Apple and adopted by Microslop because they couldn't conveniently deal with PS.)

  • Windows True Type font fine in Font Book but not in some apps

I got a Windows True Type font from a guy having some issues with it when printing website on Windows XP and I thought I'd try the font on Mac OS X 10.4.4.
It imports fine into Font Book and previews fine. When I opened up TextEdit the font can be seen in the list of fonts, but when one selects it changes to the Monaco font instead of the "real" font seen in Font Book.
In Word the font don't show up at all but in Photoshop it seems to work fine.
The font is validated fine according to Font Book.
How come it behaves like this?

    Thanks for your reply.
"OCR-A BT" is the name of the font.
The origin I don't know about. I just got it from a guy I barely know.
I know there can be various problems with fonts. Just thought it was interesting that Font Book validated and showed it fine, but still it didn't seem to be all healthy since it doesn't work in all app.

  • Missing dfonts in Font Book?

I have a brand-new MacBook -- clean OS X 10.4.7 install, latest updates and essentially NO tinkering or 3rd party software installed (yet).
However, for some reason Font Book is not showing any of my "dfont" font files (others, like "ttf", are fine). They simply don't appear. When I run an app (e.g. Pages), the fonts are listed, but cannot be used (I just get courier or something similar).
If I look on my similarly setup MacBook Pro, everything is fine. I cannot figure out what is causing this, nor where to start looking. Any ideas, anyone?
The only possible difference is that the MacBook is running with a non-admin account, whereas the MBP is running with an admin account.
    --Tim

    Er ... ok, but...
    1. Open TextEdit. Type some text. Choose Format -> Font -> Show Fonts.
    2. Now look for font "Herculanum" (it's a "dfont" font). Try to use it.
    3. On my MBP, this works fine, and I see a nice "greek-ish" font.
    4. On the MacBook, the font is not displayed; it defaults to something else (Courier, by the look of it).
The lack of appearance in Font Book is secondary. The real issue is that these fonts do not work. And in fact they do appear in Font Book on my MBP.
As I said, the appearance or lack thereof in Font Book might be related to lack of admin rights on the MacBook (I can understand that). But I don't see why they would not work inside TextEdit or any other Mac apps.

  • Font Book is empty even though I'm adding fonts. Shuts down randomely.

I've upgraded to Yosemite on a Mac. Randomly when I open Font Book the window shows there are no fonts activated. Which I know isn't true because I'm using many non system fonts. I'll go to add a font, the computer processes like it's adding the font, but the font is nowhere to be font on Font Book. Also, as I'm clicking around trying to trouble shoot Font Book Randomly shuts down. Somethings off, can't figure out what. Please help a technologically challenged user.

    Howdy kidspaztik,
So Font Book will randomly not show fonts but other times shows them just fine.  And at times clicking around within Font Book it may or may not quit.
I'm wondering if there is a corrupt font somewhere, or if this happens with another user.

  • Font Book in 10.7 is retarded. I need recommendations for a good font manager for OSX

On our 10.5.8 G5, I'm using Extensis Suitcase.
Our new Mac Pro is running 10.7 and I need to install fonts, but Font Book seems to cry about just about every font I want to install. So, where are the best font managers for OSX as of right now? Is Extensis still the best? Thoughts? Thanks,
    Chris

I know what your're talking about. I used to do phone support for an ISP.
Anyway, this last one that has me up in arms says this:
"1 serious error was found. Do not use this font."
This is in the Font Validation window when I try to install into Font Book. It shows the font name "Serpentine-Bold-Bold.ttf" in the window with an expand triangle to the left. To the far right is a red circle with a white X in it. Ahh screw it, here's a screenshot....
This font works perfectly fine on our G5 running 10.5.8
