Fonts in idvd?

I go from IPhoto-->iMovie--->iDvd. In iMovie, I add titles, etc and after burning in Idvd, these titles are somewhat pixelated and not very stable. Are there certain FONTS that would be less of a problem? I have not seen this question before.

Television is pretty low resolution, and video is pretty hard on serif fonts anyway, so your best bet are san serif fonts (like Helvetica, Arial, Verdana). And I tend to err on the side of large sizes.

  • Fonts for iDVD

I am making a DVD for a company and I need to make end credits.
What is the best font to use so that the end credits compress well out of iDVD?
Also, is there a filter I should put on them as well?
    Thank you for your help.
    Best,
    Evan Jacobs

    Evan Jacobs,
My advice is large, san serif, reduced contrast fonts. Font details can break up when compressed, so larger sizes of Arial, Helvetica, etc. are good. Also, pure white, black, and red tend to bleed when the background has high contrast (eg, pure white on black). For a formal look, slightly off-white on black looks good to me.

  • Gadget font - can I get it for OS 10.5.2?

I have some graphic design templates using Gadget font (in Quark Xpress) and now my layout is totally messed up because Gadget isn't in the system. Can I get it somewhere? I don't want to have to redo my whole entire layout.

I got curious myself about what all was in there, so opened up Font Book, then added all the fonts in iDVD I didn't have installed. Here's what I got:
    Algerian Condensed LET Fonts
    Gadget
    Humana Serif ITC TT
    Machine ITC TT
    Textile
    Wanted LET Fonts
I don't recall seeing Algerian or Wanted before, they are evidently new. I've only installed one font previously--one which I like, and it reports that dang "FOND font association usability" minor error, but seems to work. So unless something else installed some OS 9 fonts in the /Library/Fonts folder, I think that's it for iDVD.

  • IDVD crashing when attempting to change font in Theme

    Hi, all:
I'm writing on behalf of my 13-year-old daughter, who with a friend used iMovie HD to make a movie for a school project, and then used iDVD '08 to burn that project to a disc. She's had to edit the movie a bit, and has shared the edited version with iDVD, but is now having a problem. Here's her exact e-mail to me (I'm in Europe right now; she's at home in the US)...
"hey i had to do a few touch ups to the movie that me and jill made, and every time a tried 2 share it 2 idvd, it worked, but when i tried 2 change the font on the themes thingy, it always said, "idvd has to close unexpectedly. we apologize for the inconvenience." or something like that that made me have 2 force quit it more than once. dont panic, the new version of the movie is still saved on imovie, but i dont know whats wrong with the other thing. please email me back ASAP! xoxo"
TIA for your help & suggestions!
Bill from CT (but in France)

Just an additional thought to add to Glo H's excellent recommendation.....if your daughter sends her movie to iDVD and then needs to change anything in the movie, iDVD will recognize that something has changed and ask if it should update. And you think, nice, all is well. But, if you have chapter markers in the movie, iDVD will not 'update' properly. If you don't know this, you will see iDVD going ahead and encoding and burning, but the DVD disk will not play correctly. From the chapter marker nearest the change, all further chapter selections will default to that one.
I have had this happen three times now, and it has been with iDVD8. The previous version made the changes appropriately. The last time the only change I made was to change the spelling in a title! The other changes were to delete one song in an audio track and add another.
The only way to fix it was to create a new iDVD project and drop the movie in again.
I am using iMovie 6. Maybe iMovie 8 or 9 would be different. I just wanted to caution you. I know how difficult it can be to provide your kids with assistance from a distance. Mine used to call from college and it took at least 20 minutes just to figure out what they were doing......then I had to find the answer!

  • Why is Font not showing up in idvd font menu?

hi everyone, I'm new, not really, but sorta. anyway, I'm using idvd 08 to create a dvd, I started with a magicidvd and then clicked create project and have done a lot of changes, some submenus, etc. The bggest issue I have now is that I really want to use a certain font, it is a truetype font, it is activated via Suitcase Fusion, but it does not appear in iDVD's font menu, it does however appear in the font menus of other apps. I have restarted and even created a whole new project to no avail. any ideas are appreciated.
A second less important question is this, how do I make it so that my "play" button on the main menu plays the movie instead of it going to the submenu containing "play" and "scene selection" ?
Ok, figured that menu question out. Thanks.
Sorry guys, new question, how do I get the bullet next to a button center with the text?
Hard to believe I help so many mac users, huh?

That is working correctly, then. You are telling it where to put the LABEL. Not the button. (So selecting "right" puts the label to the right of the button.)
    vtavera wrote:
still not centered though, it's that bullet that looks like a paint splat, I think that may be how it is supposed to be, though no other bullets center either, maybe its the font? futura medium, there's a lot of space under the type, like it's away from the baseline.
Most likely it is the font. Some fonts have their baseline set VERY low, so something that is "Centered" horizontally actually looks way off to our eye.

I have one more question now, I attempted to burn the dvd last night, but get an error that says "Project Error - There were errors during the project validation that have to be fixed before burning the project." I get an ok button, and sometimes I get an "Open DVD Map button, which takes me to the map view, but I see no problems.
I have not personally encountered any errors yet, so I do not have personal experience with the error-reporting mechanism.
However, my understanding is that viewing your project in DVD Map view, will display error messages next to where the error occurs in the project.
So turn on the DVD Map, and take a look at every single menu closely. I expect you will see the error in there somewhere.

  • Odd rendering in idvd - bad fonts

Idvd is taking a good FCE .mov file and putting it together with odd shaped blocks of text - ie all my titling from live title is good except for 2 titles that are blown way up . they all come from the same template
2 Every time i try to use idvd it wants to use a font called algerian - the only problem is tat algerian ***** and isnt anywhere on my machine- i have combed all directories looking for it . how do i tell idvd not to try to use that font?

    Hello smokn
I'd recommend you install the Infinality patches:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … d_packages
The package 'freetype2-infinality' is in the AUR (if you're on a 64bit system you'll need lib32-freetype2 from multilib)
You'll get notifications of conflicting packages on the system, this is notmal, the Infinfality suite will replace a lot of font types.
Keep in mind this is just a recommendation for English font types, it's what I use to ensure my system renders fonts properly and hasn't failed me on any of my machines yet.

  • Jagged font problem - iMovie to iDVD to then burn a DVD

    I have iMovie 11 - v 9.0.2 and iDVD 7.1.1.
I've imported photos and audio into iMovie to create a slideshow with transitions.  All works well there.
When I then export to iDVD and preview it on screen, everything looks great.
But when I burn to DVD and play in a DVD player, the fonts look terrible - so they are not rendering properly.
Font I am using is Coolvetica.  It was in the iDVD package.  I opened up the iDVD package and copied the font into Fontbook to make it available in iMovie.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
    neilc

Thanks. That solved the font problem.
However, the overall quality of my DVD when display on a 42 inch plasma HDTV is poor---looks like a photo that has been copied on a color copier--too contrasty and with color shifting to yellow.  I have created three new projects from the original video, which is 47 minutes long, one DVD in each of Best Performance, High Quality and Professional Quality. The Best Performance is terrible.  However, neither the High or the Professional quality is much better, other than the fonts looking better.  Both formats result in high contrast poor images and color shift to yellow.
I have shared the iMovie in the Media Browser in HD 1080 and in 720.
I noticed that all the DVDs didn't seen to write more than about 1/2 inch on the outside edge of the DVD. The size of the TS-Video folder on the High and Professional DVDs take up only 2.82 gig.  It seems that iDVD is compressing the video more than necessary, leaving a lot of unused space on a standard 4.7 gig DVD.
Interestingly, DVD's made of much shorter videos and produced in the Best Performance mode on iDVD look very good when played on the Plasma TV.
Both the High and the Professional DVDs look very good on my McBook Pro and MacMini screens.
Given the restriction of a standard DVD player (480p) I wonder if I should share the movie in this format.

  • IDVD--changing font color

This is a really simple question. I know the answer is simple, too.  I know you can change the font COLOR of iDVD menu names and that it is very strange what you click to do it.  I just don't remember it.  Can't find the answer anywhere!  Help, please!  And thank you.....

It's the 'i' (for Information) bottom left-hand corner next to the + button.

  • How can I use fonts found in iDVD 08 in other programs?

I created a DVD using 6.0 Themes, Pass Through in particular, by exporting a slideshow movie from iMovie 06 and it looks great. Thank you's to forum members for the help I needed to resolve issues. Deleting the plist files and burning at 2 times speed did the trick to problems I encountered. But here's one I've been spending lots of time on: I used the font, Humana Serif Md ITC TT, on the DVD and I would like to use it on the printed cover, however, I can't access it from any other program. I've used Spotlight to no avail and it does not present itself on the list of available fonts on any other program I have. How can I use that font in Pages to use on my printed DVD cover?

Kool! I just learned something new myself. (thanx Niel)
It's essential that you do exactly as stated above while holding down the option key in the instructions that were kindly provided above. The option key serves to copy these files to an alternate location if I'm not mistaken. Holding down any other key but Option may have an unintended effect on the application itself.
So please do exercise caution while working within the Resources folder / showing package contents.

  • font color="green" made a test: AVCHD to iM to iDVD ...   /font

(in case, you missed this post in the iMovie section of this board .. )
For my German forum macuser.de, I made a short, little-scientific test, topic: quality of AVCHD-HiDef to DVD (Standard).
In use: Material from a Canon SDcard device, a Canon HV20 (=HDV), both set to 'FullHD'/25fps, and some stills from my iPhoto Lib (Nikon D50) ..
Import to iM09 in 'large', project set to 25fps/16:9, theme with auto-transitions .. just some pics & movin' images ..
    tested the Share options:
    • Export with Quicktime/QT/AppleIntermediate (=codec of HiDef after import)
    • Export Movie
    • Share to MediaBrowser
    • (didn't test 'share to iDVD, identical to #3)
in iDVD, New Project, 25fps, 16:9 widescreen, 'Professional', dragged all three movs into it ..
choosed 'create image', used the DiskUtility for burning (=just to keep an img of project)
    after about 15min, DVD done.
inserting into my Pioneer DVDstandalone, connected to a CRT 16:9 Sony TV ..
    => superb, awesome, groundbraking
no, to be serious: quality is - imho - perfect.
    in detail:
Title with its tiny lettering is crystal clear .. no flickering ...
The 'synthetic', high keyed pictures of the album show 'steps' when Disk is on pause (pic is magnified by 4); these parts also show a slight stutter on TV = not interlaced ..
On Mac, Disk looks in fullscreen a lil' .. 'muddy' Playback set to 100% size increased quality (=keep in mind; DVD is 720x480 only! no use with a 30" computer display) .. Screenshots shows details, left: Original AVCHD 1080i, notice 'lines' at window etc; right same scene on Disk .. keep in mind: iM does in most cases 'bobbing' interlaced material! bobbing is also known as skip-field-deinterlacing ..
Next screengrabs compares HDV source vs. DVD: focus on the Canondale -lettering on bike .. on source readable, on DVD just yellow splash..
    summary:
I don't notice any difference on three diff. processes. in theory, #1 should be best.. in praxis, the 'Share to Mediabrowser' is fastest.
videos (and stills) look almost 'too' sharp, electronically .. too much detail creates flicker (watch YT-video, the stadium); on high-key borders slightly flicker; compared to SD-sourced DVDs 'better' ...-
same material via a WD TV HD on a FullHD-flatscreen is for sure superior ..

  • IDVD 6.02  track initialization problems and no disk image

"There was an error during track initialization and iDVD can't continue burning this DVD (the disc has not been touched yet!). Select 'Delete Encoded Assets' from the Advanced-menu and try burning this project again."
This has happened 5 times now both when trying to burn to DVD-R and trying to save as disk image on desktop. Very frustrating.
Project exported to IDVD from Keynote 3.01 running OSX 10.4.7 on a Powermac G5 D2.3 GHz with 2.5GB RAM.
The project is just 1GB using iDVD 4 theme "Transparent Blue" with a run time of 15:14 mins and HD has over 20GB free.
Also tried it from the other internal HD which has over 100GB free.
    PBG4 Ti DVI and PMac G5 D2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Both TV (using a Sony DVD player) and on my Lacie
Photon 20 monitor - the slideshow jpegs and Keynote
fonts look poor compared to the straight QT movies
that are part of the project and made using iMovie.
Your QT movies are probably much higher resolution than your DVD.
    JEPGS are pretty hi res.
Ultimately, all the resolution you can get on an NTSC DVD is 640x480 pixels in the square pixel terms of digital cameras. The HD discs we can create today have the same 'limited' resolution - they just stretch the pixels on playback.
Someday ... when we can all afford systems with TRUE HD format burners and players, things will get better.

  • IDVD 704 issues: chapters, save-as crashes, theme elements getting "lost"

I'm using iDVD 7.0.4 on a mid-2010 13" MBP with 6Gb of RAM, running OSX 10.6.5 . I created a new project, and applied an old theme I created in iDVD 5 or 6. The theme is basically empty, apart from a single backdrop image and a few font specifications. (I like things simple...)
I then imported a QT movie created with Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 from 16:9 (anamorphic) PAL DV material. The movie contains about 9 chapter markers and was corrected back from 720x576 to 1024x576 in QuickTime Player 7.
The movie imported correctly, but chapter titles with accented characters were lost (issue 1)
Issue 2: Doing a Save-As of an open project provokes a crash - immediately if I use the keyboard shortcut, delayed if I use the menu. Yet it has worked a single time.
Issue 3: After finalising the project, I decided to do a final edit on the chapter title text colour. Impossible to consolidate that to disk: if I save a project changed in this manner, it will no longer open correctly. iDVD will complain about missing theme elements, and force the default theme on me.
I tried rebooting, but that didn't resolve issues 2 & 3 (didn't check issue 1 but that one seems a true bug or omission).
Any ideas? A quick peek on here didn't serve any similar stories, so am I the only one experiencing this?

  • Burning .mov file to dvd via IDVD

I created a slide show to music on IMovie. Playing the .mov file through my computer and even projected on a big screen it looks great.  But when converting it to a DVD via IDVD, the font on the couple of lines of text that I have coming up with the pictures is pixilated and really horrible.  I tried a couple of different burns and always choose best quality but the results remain the same.  The dvd created through IDVD is horrible with really badly pixilated edges on the fonts.  How can I burn DVD's so that they look as good as they do playing directly from my .mov file so that I can burn copies for others who have requested my music slide show?  I am working with a brand new MacBook Pro computer and the IMovie and IDVD programs that came with it, if that helps at all.

    Hi,
The info helps explain what's happening -- the 1080p version is widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) and physically large (1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall), and much more compressed than the DVCPRO50 version (the 1080p file is less than half the size even though it's more than twice the screen space).  So, iDVD would have a difficult time crushing that down into the standard DVD video dimensions.
The DVCPRO50 version is also widescreen, so you want to be sure your iDVD preference is set to 16:9 aspect ratio (if not, start a new project and re-import).
iDVD also has to crush this version to make it fit the standard 720x480 format, but not as much as the 1080p version.  Text can particularly suffer when video dimensions are altered.
Is your iMovie version gone or just won't open?
I'd be inclined to experiment with a copy of the DVCPRO50 version.  Try the free MPEG Streamclip to see if it can resize the video to 720x480 before bringing it into a 16:9 iDVD project.  Next try using Streamclip to convert the format to DV (DV Stream or .dv) to see if that format change makes iDVD happier.

  • What happens to iweb-built site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and subsequently upgrade to 10.6.8 or even 10.7? Will fonts stay the same? Will layout change? Or anything else change? Thanks

What happens to iweb-build site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3) and subsequently update that to 10.6.8 or even to 10.7? Evidently iweb has been discontinued. I have version 3.0.3 of iweb now but understand that there's been an update for OS 10.6 so same question goes for this update.
Will fonts change? Will layout change? Will widgets still work? Links? Will Google Analytics PlugIn still work?
(Since MobileMe is disappearing, I now save iweb site to local folder on my computer, then upload it to GoDaddy using Cyberduck. I run Google Analytics plug in on folder before its uploaded.)
My computer, MacBook Pro came with iweb, which has been updated to 3.0.3. Since iweb is discontinued, will upgrade of operating system just ignore iweb so that iweb will run the same as before? Or will it wipe it out? Or change how it currently works (questions above).
    Thanks

As you now know iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store.  To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.
