Fonts in Italics

Hey, I'm having a problem with most of my fonts in FCP. The ones I use most often (Arial, Century Gothic, etc.) are permanently in Italics whenever I try to use them. If I click the Italics tab, they skew a little more to the right. All my fonts work fine in my other programs (Motion/LiveType), but I can't figure out how to fix this problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

This is the most annoying drawback to the FCP text generator that has been around since version 1. This generator totally ignores all the family variations in a font, and simulates the bold and italic variations. As far as I can tell, it uses the first font file that appears alphabetically in the finder as "plain".
You have two options -
1. disable the italic version of the font in Font Book
2. Use Boris instead

  • Font is italicized, but only in web browsers

    Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem.  I've started work with a new inherited workstation, and my font is italicized, but only in web browsers.  And I *think* only on text that has default styling.  E.g., forms, textareas, Google search results, and other unstyled text.
Is there a system-wide setting that changes web browser text styling, or have I inherited a bizarre workstation?

One thing to check if it's only in the Browser, like Safari>Preferences>Advanced, does it have a custom css set there...

The candara font in italics is turning my words into what looks like another language (it's only happening in the italics version).  Does anyone know how to fix it? (I'm running OSX 10.8.3 on a new iMac and the only change I've made recently is to install MS Office for Mac 2011)

This is what the font turns it into (it's supposed to say Chrysler Building & New York Public Library).  The font came with Pages which is what I'm working in.  It worked before but isn't now.

  • Keyboard shortcuts for making font bold, italics & underlined

When I'm editing pages using Chrome I can use CTRL+B to make font bold, CTRL+U to underline and CTRL+I for italics.
Is there's any hotkeys to do this in Firefox.

Does that editor have a toolbar with icons to perform these actions?
It is possible that these buttons have a shortcut and you may have to use a different status key like Alt + Shift.

  • Acrobat 9.4.6 Pro loses italics when printing

Yesterday (9-15-11) I updated Acrobat 9 Pro to version 9.4.6. (The previous version was probably 9.4.5, but I am not sure.) PDFs generated before and after the update that use purchased fonts (Minion, Avenir) no longer print those fonts in italics. Any italicized passages print as unformatted. Before the update there were no problems with printing in italics. The PDFs display the text correctly on the screen. Only when printing does the text become un-italicized.
I installed Adobe Reader 10.1.1. Same result as 9.4.6.
Sending to a different brand printer has the same result.
No problems printing from the word processor (OpenOffice 3.3.0).
Printing from the PDF to a new PDF has the same result. Text is correct on screen but not on paper.
Generating a PDF on this computer and then printing it from a different computer running Reader 10.1.0 has no problems.
What happened? What can I do to fix it. If there is no fix, is it possible to roll back to the previous version?

Engravers Gothic Italic + also  Bold no longer prints out
I use Adobe Pro 9, Word (Office 2003 - SP3) and Windows XP Pro (SP3) and all have been updated in the last 2 weeks. (Updated to Adobe 9.4.6)
Over the years, will all the same software as above, I have used Engraver’s Gothic BT (True Type) font, and especially the italic and bold version of it, in my Company letterheads and logo.
Now, when printing out an old .pdf letterhead document, I find that the Engraver’s Gothic Italic Bold font has been substituted by an odd-looking/unrecognisable font that is not in my Windows font directory, and the normal italic (i.e. not bold) has been straightened back upright.
(It does not look like a different font, but as if the software has straightened out only part of the font, leaving a “bold” shadow italic version in the background).
The old .pdf letterheads look as they always did on the screen, but when they are printed out, something has substituted the unusual Engraver’s Gothic italic font for the unrecognisable one.
A new Word document, converted to .pdf, similarly shows my “usual” Engraver’s Gothic Italic style and font and both look entirely “normal” on the screen, but when printed out as a .pdf, the font is again substituted/replaced by the above unrecognisable font.
(Word still prints out the italic and bold version without problem).
The normal version of Engravers Gothic is not affected in Adobe – only the italic version is substituted – the normal italic is straightened back up and the bold italic is the odd, shadow version.
I have an old laptop that has not been updated in the last 2 weeks and that prints out .pdf’s with the italic version without any problem i.e. it seems that a software update in the last 2 weeks has affected this italic font.
Removing, re-booting, then re-installing the font makes no difference and it is also the same whichever printer I use.
How do I get Adobe to go back and recognise and print out Engraver’s Gothic Italic Bold, as it has done, with hundreds of documents, over the last years?

  • All text in Preview is low resolution and Times italics is twisted

I have two issues that may be related.
All text from PDF documents in Preview (version 3.0.8) appears in very low resolution, reminiscent of the days of 72-dpi jaggy fonts.
Italics in Times prints out in a bizarre twisted fashion.
The affected system is a early-model G4 first with OS 10.4.7 and then 10.4.8.
Regarding the Preview problem, bitmapped images don't appear to be affected. Printout is not affected. Acrobat is not affected. A screenshot of Preview's output is at http://www.fluxsoft.com/images/previewlowres.jpg.
What's displayed there is a good rendition of the output on 23-inch Apple Cinema display.
A screenshot of Times in plain and the twisted italics is at
    http://www.fluxsoft.com/images/twisted_italics.jpg
    The following steps were taken:
A full Onyx 1.7.4 cleaning, which includes the deleting font caches.
FontBook was run to resolved duplicate fonts and to verfiy all fonts.
The system was upgraded to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7.
    Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Power Mac G5

I figured it out by myself.
Somehow, really do not know how!, *FontExplorer X pro* deactivated a couple of SYSTEM FONTS such as Arial, Verdana, and others. This caused not only Safari but many other applications to behave in a weird way in terms of the fonts. Just activated back the fonts and problem solve.
Now, as I said before, +how in da' **** those fonts got de-activated?!+

  • Some fonts do not appear in InDesign

Some fonts do not appear in InDesign although they can be used in Word, Pagemaker and show in Adobe Typemanager.

    Can you name one?
These are the most common causes of people complaining "My fonts don't appear":
    (a) Smart name sorting. "New Century Schoolbook" sorts under "C", not "N". "Adobe Garamond" sorts under "G". (I call this 'smart' sorting because apparently it isn't the same as, ehm, dumb sorting. However, I've never read a good description of its sort parameters.)
    (b) Word and PageMaker (but not ATM) allow the use of fake fonts: bold, italics and bold+italics are produced by horribly deforming your base font. If you want a bold font in InDesign, use the designed one. If there isn't one designed ... the designer probably had good reasons not to make one. (It's still possible to create faux-bold and faux-italics in InDesign but the program leaves that decision to you).
    (c) Smart Script sorting. InDesign groups its fonts per supported script. Latin fonts are at the top (a slightly self-centric choice), then come groups of fonts for Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, etc. etc. A font like Gisha contains Hebrew characters and thus appears in the Hebrew group.
    (d) More than one font file with the same font name (internally). ID gets mightily confuzed if it encounters a file "times.ttf", font name "Times Roman", in one folder, and "tr_____.pfb", font name "Times Roman", in another folder. You can't really blaim it, though.

  • How to create PDF without embedded fonts from Indesign

Can anyone tell me how to create from Indesign a PDF that certainly does not contain any fonts I don't want to include? But that would appear in the same layout in a substituted font, including italics and small caps?

You can't, InDesign will embed the fonts for  you.
To unembed fonts you need Acrobat Professional. Go to Tools>Print Production>Pdf Optimiser
    go to Fonts
And select the fonts to unembed.
You could select any text and change the Transparency to 99.9%.
Then in Edit>Transparency Flattener make a new one using High as a base for the new
    Select Convert Text to Outlines.
When you Export to pdf, choose Adobe PDF 1.3, and go to Flattening, choose the new Flattener Preset that you just made.
And when you export it, any text forced through the Flattener will be converted to outlines. (this could violate the terms of the Font Licencing.)

  • Can we write in Italic font on to the screen by using the WRITE Statement

    Hello Abappers,
Can we write in Italic font on to the screen by using the WRITE Statement.
    Please reply.
    Regards,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
    >Sandeep Wrote:
If you have the codepage for Italian language installed in your machine , you can write the same.
The OP is asking about italic font not about the language.
You need to upload font files ITALICI.TTF. Go to SE73 . Click on Install True type font and upload the italic file on to your system.
    Check Font Attribute Italic
We already have help files on this. Refer:

I don't have idea on write statement in ABAP reports. Hope it cannot be.

  • Set font size for ChoiceGroup

    Hi,
Is there any way to set font size of the String elements of ChoiceGroup

    Hi,
Yes, there is, but only if you're using MIDP2.0.
Check the API documentation of ChoiceGroup and see that there's a setFont(.., ..) method. The given index (int value) identifies the index of the element in the list for which the font will be set. This means that different elements in one choicegroup can have different fonts.
Test it carefully, I've noticed that not all devices show correct behaviour on this. Also note that certain devices ignore certain font settings (for example italics, because a lot of native implementations won't have a font in italics).
    Good luck!

  • Netscape default font query

I seem to have this problem where the default font is italicized. I went to Appearances in the Preferences area, but I can't seem to change it.
    I'm using Netscape 7.02. I can't figure out what's going on.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

That's the weird thing. I even set it up so all my fonts are Arial (san serif), even the italicized choice.
I don't think it happens all the time. Today I noticed it on an attachment I sent someone. It was from, I think, a word document. Actually it may have been done originally on a PC, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
I know I sound stupid, but I can tell something's weird because, for instance, I went to web site and the home page was in italics. It seemed sort of strange. I looked at the source code and there was no font choice, so I figured it was the default. Even stranger, I went from Netscape to iCab and viewed the same page. It wasn't in italics (I think I'll go check out the default fonts in iCab).
If you can help, that would be great. If this just seems like a mess, I understand that, too. Thanks

  • Fuzzy Italic Fonts

After the upgrading of several different fonts related packages just yesterday, all fonts in italics look more bold and fuzzy than they did before the update.  All other fonts still look fine, and I didn't change anything in the fonts settings.
    Anyone getting the same fuzziness?

Nevermind, I found that a bug report has been filed on this at FreeDesktop.org:
    https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13720
Edit: If anyone else should run into this, reverting back to ttf-dejavu-2.21 fixes things back to the way they were until the new dejavu fonts package is fixed.

  • Italicizing words within a paragraph

I am currently writing a paragraph which has been formatted using a paragraph style from the styles drawer. Within my paragraph I want to italicize just a few words, however it will not let me do this. When I highlight the words and click italicize nothing happens. When I look in the Format > Font menu, italicized has been ticked, however the word does not look italicized and nor is it when I print it. I've tried changing the paragraph style in styles drawer to see if this will make it work but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Any advice? Italicizing some words is necessary for APA styled reports so its really important I work out how to do this...
    Thanks for your help

The use of glyphs grabbed from other fonts is not a new feature.
It's done to give the user the illusion that he has a complete font.
The oddities may be seen very easily.
Sometimes they impact the real size of the chars and lines using only embedded chars have an height different of lines using borrowed ones.
The problem with super and subscript is the same.
If we want to have a correct result, it's good practice to use an application able to tell us which glyphs are available in the font which we plan to use.
I remember that one day I discovered that to get the full set of sub and superscript with a selected font, these ones where in fact grabbed in three fonts which explained the awful result.
It's always the same problem, so called 'Desktop Publishing' appliation give to Mr everybody the illusion than creating a document is a simple task.
I faught quite all the afternoon trying to help my ten years old grand son because one of his teacher gave him (in fact it gave it at the whole class) an exercice requiring the building of a page layout using the Fontwork tool in openOffice.
The content was of no importance. What was important was to use a lot of bells and whistles.
I was heavily provoked by this foolish requirement.
In French we call that 'mettre la charrue avant les boeufs'.
Teach them to use correctly the language. It will be time later to ask them to think to the pages layout.
    Back to faux italics.
You may be right for the explanations of Apple choices.
As a guy highly concerned for professional reasons by intellectual property, I like to think that Apple took care of it.

  • Pages cannot handle fonts

Many users seem to be reporting the missing fonts error with Pages; however, the problem seems to be more fundamental. Pages has the same problem that AppleWorks and ClarisWorks also had. All three programs have a problem handling fonts. Pages for instance will invariably say that fonts I never used are missing, and then it proceeds to changes fonts throughout the document. This even occurs in simple documents with one font, no italics, no boldface, etc.
Worse still, pasting a ruler can cause Pages to change the font in the affected paragraph. This was also a defect in AppleWorks. Can we get this fixed, people? A word processor that cannot handle fonts reliably isn't much good, even if many other features are terrific, as they are in Pages. Who can afford to reformat a document every time he opens it?
    Steve Aird

Steve. this forum is built upon people who try to help other people. We try to resolve issues which occur and offer solutions.
To do that we need more information.
What was the origin of the document? Was it from Word? There are some instances where Word embeds bullets (even though they are not used) for unknown reasons and the font used for those bullets is missing from the OS install.
Are the files from another computer? If so the font may not have been installed on your computer.
Did you do an upgrade recently or move to another computer? If you copied the iWork files from one computer to another, but not the fonts which were included, those fonts will be missing. Reinstall iWork and perrform the updating procedures through Software Update.
Do you have dupllicate fonts on your system? Sometimes fonts will have the same name and yet be different internally. Fonts reside in several places so they can cause confilcts. Use Fontbook to resolve these issues.
There are far more cases where Pages and Keynote are working properly than those who are having problems.
BTW. where are you pasting rulers from? I don't see that in the Pages manual. Just curious.
