Fonts look different after upgrade

ok so I upgraded something via pacman -Syu and now after restarting, I find that some of the fonts have changed, not that it's a problem but is this normal?
The words look smaller now and less bolded. Changes have appeared in both firefox, acroread, the login page, xchm and others which I have not tried.

even after adding nomodeset into menu.lst, I still get the same font with the login screen, firefox, etc.
what should I do?
Is grub like lilo where I need to run something to update the binary?

  • MY FONT LOOKS DIFFERENT IN INDESIGN PAGES PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello, I have a majo problem here. I have all my pages written in one font, Arial Narrow, however the width of the font looks different from page to page, it looks bold on page 1 and 2, and on page 3 it looks fine,  is there any invisible setting applied to the whol page? why does it look bold? I did try toprint them, they do look different, also, there is no stroke  set, i checked, and color is set to black not registration. Is there anything else I am missing???? Please help!!!!

Transparency isn't something you would adjust, per se.
Imported art may have transparency in it (like a transparent background), or you may have applied an effect like a glow or a drop shadow, or used a blending mode (all of which are transparency effects) on an object on your document page, or even adjusted an object's opacity in the effects panel to make the background show through (this is true tranparency inthe classic sense). Any of these things will result in ID redrawing the page and "emboldening" the type on that page.
There is no way to remove the eefect other than to remove the transparency from the page (if you are showing the icons for it in the pages panel, whcih you set in the panel options, you'll see a small checkerboard next to the page icon in the panel if there is transparency in use). To assure that all pages look the same if you are going to use transparency on any page, you can add a transparent object to the master page.

  • My Dock icons looks garbled after upgrading to OS X Maverick.

My Dock icons looks garbled after upgrading to OS X Maverick. Not all but most of them look like scattered dots instead of the icons, tried restarting multiple times still no use.
I installed OS X Maverick last week and for a week it looked fine. I have restarted the OS for copule of times after upgrade. Now the Icons in the dock seem to be garbled.

The dock preferences may be corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
    Restart your Mac.

  • Firefox fonts look different from Chromiums

Hi, my Firefox fonts look different than the ones Chromium uses:
Left is Firefox, right is chrome. As you can see, the placement of characters is somewhat different.
This is NOT the issue mentioned on the Firefox Wiki page, at least it is not fixed with the fontconfig.
    What happens here?
    Thank you,
    Jan Oliver

I have "serif" , "sans serif" and "monospace" in the selections, "serif" being the default.
I applied the fix from here, and it did smoothen the fonts, but the letter placing is still bad as in the screenshot.

  • Font rendering change after upgrade

After upgrading freetype from current to the latest version I noticed that my fonts changed. The rendering was thicker, as in most other linux distributions. Not that it was bad, but I prefer the thin ones Arch had up to now.To solve it I just downgraded freetype to the previous version and everything is fine, but I wonder if the change is due to the way both versions are configured/compiled or is it an internal change in freetype?
I ask because I'd like to keep this thinner fonts, so I want to know if I should just stop upgrading freetype forever or could I recompile the latest version to get this kind of fonts?

slackhack wrote:btw, do you have TFT or CRT? i have a TFT and have tried autohinting both on and off, but it looks like total crap with it off.
I have a CRT, since TFT screens hurt my eyes with their crispness. I prefer the smooth CRT image. I use the defult hinting (medium), though I've found that if I turn it to full hinting I get the thinner fonts too with this latest freetype, so now I can choose without the need to downgrade.
that must be the reason, because i have a TFT and just upgraded to the latest freetype2/fontconfig, and the fonts look worse than ever. changing hintfull to hintmedium in ~/.fonts.conf has no effect whatsoever. i moved the /etc/fonts/conf.d directory, no effect, removed local.conf, no effect. nothing seems to fix them, it's really annoying.  and worst of all, the old freetype2 isn't installing because it requires an older fontconfig, and when i try to install an older fontconfig, i get some libexpat library error and everything crashes when i try to launch it.
    >>update: i just checked in gnome, and the fonts look really good there. XFCE4 must use some different method of hinting the fonts than gnome, which i thought uses the freetype2 autohinter. i changed hinting to medium in the xfce4 UI settings, and that improved things a little, even though i have hintmedium set in ~/.fonts.conf. maybe xfce4 uses the BCI hinter and bypasses the freetype hinter?

  • Firefox/Thunderbird Font Rendering changed after upgrade of xulrunner

    Hi guys,
I experienced a problem with font rendering in the mentioned applications after upgrading xulrunner from 1.9.2.10-1 to 1.9.2.10-2 today. It seems like font smoothing/subpixel rendering does not work as before. After downgrading to 1.9.2.10-1, it worked as expected again.
To make it more clearly, here is a comparison shot of the two different renderings. The top one is before, the bottom one after the upgrade. You can see that the font at the top is rendered more smoothly.
And here is a difference image:
Is anything known about changes which could cause this?
<edit>I have to correct this. The rendering in thunderbird was obviously not changed by the xulrunner upgrade, but by a separate thunderbird upgrade from 3.1.4-1 to 3.1.4-2.
<edit2>Additional information: I have the cleartype versions of freetype2, cairo and libxft installed, if that matters.

Although I am empathetic to the hard (and really great) job the arch devs do, I want to voice my overall agreement with softtower on this issue. Fonts have been an off and on problem for me with arch since the beginning. I understand the devs are doing the best they can, especially when the actual problem is with the moz. devs. But fonts are the major way most users interact with the system, and I can tell you that almost nothing is more aggravating, to me at least, to suddenly "upgrade" and get presented with those really crappy fonts out of the blue. Just saying I understand the frustration, and I think he makes some good points about shipping broken packages and "blaming" it on upstream. If they're broken - don't use them! if possible. "Progress" that breaks stuff isn't really progress, imo.

Don't quite get what the fuzz is all about, my fonts look as crisp as ever (on a laptop lcd), the update changed absolutely nothing for me. I never used "fixed" versions of anything, can't really remember how I set up the fonts when I did this installation though (font config advice on the wiki I guess).
It is not the repo's maintainers job to keep packages synced up with any "fixed" packages in AUR, that is your own responsibility, and bitching about it won't help you any.
Just pointing out that comments like these aren't really helpful, imho. So you didn't have the problem - that's good to know, but the "fuzz" is about the fact that some of us *DO* have the problem.
It typically doesn't show up on laptops, btw, only standalone LCDs for some reason (has always been the case for me, at least, with both LCDs and laptops, where the laptop never had the problem). So again, the fuss is that a major usability function got broken from an upgrade that shouldn't get broken, and imo it raises some good, if admittedly difficult to resolve, points, philosophical points, etc. about the packaging and upgrade process,

  • Fonts looks different in Illustrator. Why?

I'm making a web menu on illustrator and i've noticed that the font that i'm using looks different (thinner) in Illustrator (preview or export) than it does on a Word Processor or in a Web Site ( http://wordmark.it).
What can i do to get the same look?
Im using Gill Sans , Light , Size : 25.
I'll attach an image so you can notice the difference.
    Thanks!

There are two settings you should look at one ins in the general tabof the Illustrator Preferences Anti-Alias which you should turn on then in the save for the web in the image tab select Type Optimize from the pull down.
    here are the differences
    No anti alias

The site looks OK -- actually quite impressive for what appears to be a from-scratch design.
In Opera 10 under Snow Leopard 10.6.1, the design doesn't start to explode until the horizontally scrolling marquee comes across. I would strongly recommend just removing that marquee; it is an extremely outdated element of web design. If you do that, the design shouldn't blow up on you in other browsers.

  • Font looks different from page to page - InDesign

The font looks BOLD in page 1 but looks correct in page 2/3.  The font is exactly the same (from what I can tell).  It also seems to be a page thing, because I can drag the font to page 2/3 and it looks correct.  Drag it back to page 1 and it looks bold.

Is there an image, or an element with an applied effect on the page that is displaying a bold font? If so, try putting the text on its own separate layer.
As a side note, in the future you'll get quicker and more useful help on questions regarding specific problems by posting in the primary product forums. The InDesign forum can be found here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign

  • Translations different after upgrade?

    Hi all,
I have a problem with translations after upgrading from 4.6C to ECC6. We have custom made screens, with original language EN. The screens are translated in several languages (including DE), but not in french (FR).
If log on to the 4.6C system in FR, the non-translated screen elements are displayed in english, the screen's original language. So far so good.
If I log on to the upgraded ECC6 system in FR, the non-translated screen elements suddenly are displayed in the DE translation. The original language of the screens is still EN in the upgraded system and in both systems my default language is EN.
Does anyone know what causes this and how I can solve it?
    Thanks!
    Alfio Esposito

    Hi,
this is a point for your basic.
You can define, which language comes up, if you don´t have an translation.

  • How do you get fonts to look normal after upgrade to snow leopard

fuzzy or blurred on both imac and external acer 24 inch monitor.
anyone know how to get them back to normal?

I was having the problem of fuzzy fonts in Terminal (which I use a lot, being a UNIX guy). I use 14 pt Bold Courier New a lot, and it was fuzzy after my SL upgrade on a 21" iMac (2 Ghz dual core). I finally discovered the "antialias text" button in the Terminal preferences. In my case it was turned on for all of my terminals that had fuzzy fonts. I unclicked this button in all of my terminal preferences, and voila, clear fonts again.
