Fonts make me grumpy.

I have done extensive research on fonts but have not found a utility that will manage them without also doing things I did not ask for. I'd like to use Apple's FontBook. Ok so launch it. Now, I want it to become aware of all of my fonts. I have about 50,000 of them. These are stored in a folder of their own at root level on my hard disk, "Fonts".
In Library/Fonts there are 256 fonts installed. Fair enough.The folder ~/Library/Fonts is empty. (Of course, I have not touched anything in System/Library/Fonts.)
After launching FontBook, I make sure I've selected "All fonts" in the left-hand "Collection" column. Then I go to File/Add fonts and select the items in my "Fonts" folder at the root level. All I want is for Fontbook to catalog them.
Instead, it looks at them and then installs all 50,000 of them in my ~/Library/Fonts folder. Grrrr!
I want to be able to flick through FontBook and choose a collection of fonts that I want installed, for use every time. What could be simpler? Surely a common request. But...it can't be done! FontBook is determined to install every font I have.
If only I could get them all to appear in "All Fonts" I could then, later, drag them to "Computer" or "User" to install them. But, to repeat, FontBook is determined to install all of them rather than just becoming aware of them and cataloging them so I can see what they look like.
FontBook also opens a separate window to inform me that some fonts it has just become aware of are "dangerous" and should not be used. So why doesn't it give me a button to delete them?
FontAgent Pro is a whole order of magnitude worse.

A third party font manager and that many installed fonts..

  • Missing font makes Adobe InDesign CS4 6.0.4 crash

    Hi!
    I am having a problem with the latest version of Adobe InDesign CS4 (v 6.0.4).
    I opened an old document which contained two missing fonts.
    I was able to correct the first one by changing it to an existing font.
    But when I tried to correct the second one, the application crashed.
    I did this:
    1. Opened the document with the missing font (the first font was now already corrected).
    2. In the warning dialog window saying a font was missing, I clicked "Find Font".
    3. The missing font was called "Helvetica (T1) Bold Narrow". I set it to be replaced by "Helvetica Regular".
    4. Then I clicked "Change All".
    5. Indesign CS4 crashes.
    This is the information about the missing font (note that it says "First Used: na" which is strange):
    Filename: <not installed>
    Full Name: Helvetica
    First Used: NA
    Font: Helvetica (T1) Bold Narrow
    PostScript Name: Helvetica-Narrow-Bold
    Style: Bold Narrow
    Type: Type 1
    Version:
    Restrictions: Unkonwn (Font is missing)
    Path: Unknown (Font is missing)
    Character Count: 27
    Style Count: 0
    Styles:
    Page: none
    Does anyone have a solution, or is this a bug?
    Thanks

    Hi! Thanks for your answer.
    I am using Windows XP (SP3).
    I tried to export my INDD file (ID CS4 format) to an INX file.
    But that also made InDesign crash (perhaps because of the font thing).
    Unfortunately I can't change the missing font of the text because:
    * I can't see the text frame that contains the missing font.
    * InDesign crashes when using the "Find Font" function.
    However, this is not a big problem, I can still work with the file. But I will
    always get the annoying warning about the missing font, and I prefer to
    have no errors in my INDD files.

  • How can I change font, make it bold, etc. in a new message?

    I'm using TB 31.5.0. When composing a new HTML message, I'm not seeing a way to easily change fonts, font size, bold, etc. I have "compose messages in HTML format" checked. My wife says she thinks this feature used to be there in earlier versions of TB.
    Thanks,

    Perfect! Thank you so much!

  • Snow Leopard Symbol font doesn't always work in MS Office

    I have to share files between MS Office 2011 for Mac and MS Office 2010 for Windows. As a mathematician, I use the Symbol font on my Mac frequently, but when I open those files in Windows, different characters have been substituted for the characters I typed.  Can I change something I'm doing on the Mac side to have the characters display correctly on my PC, or do I need to approach the problem from the Windows side?  Why isn't the Symbol font universally compatible?  Is there another variation in the Symbol font family that would be more compatible?

    You may be using the legacy symbol character encoding, which is not a good idea any more, as most apps have moved to Unicode.  Instead of using the Symbol font, make your characters by going to the Character Viewer (Edit > Special Characters), view = Roman, Tab = By Category, Category = Math, Digits, Greek
    PS Depending on what app you are working in, you might want to use an Equation Editor rather than just typing symbols directly:

  • Losing Font usage

    Hello
    I have created user accounts for my students here in our computer lab on our macs. What I am noticing is that Pages is losing its font capabilities in the user accounts. Some of my students can't change fonts, or point sizes, and everything comes up in a default font. I have tried to use Font Book to reopen them, but Font Book is telling me that they are open. HELP!! I have their first major project happening next week.
    BklynTechTeacher

    I have created user accounts for my students here in our computer lab on our macs. What I am noticing is that Pages is losing its font capabilities in the user accounts.
    The idea is as follows: In Mac OS 9 and earlier, fonts lived in one place and the operating system was for one user. In Mac OS X, the operating system is for multiple users and fonts live in multiple places. If all users are to access a font, make it live in the top level under Computer. If one user is to have access and another user is not to have access to a font, make it live in the Home level of the one user and not in the Home level of the other user. In other words, if all kids are to have access to a font, make the font live in the top level under Computer. /hh

  • How can I search and replace fonts?

    iOS 7 doesn't support the Adobe workhorse fonts I've most relied on for years, and arbitrarily changes them to iOS built-in fonts when I link my standard documents and templates to the iPhone, via iCloud. There's no apparent logic to how it does this; a Pages document in Minion Pro, a serif font, gets changed to the sans-serif Helvetica. Myriad Pro may come out in Times New Roman. I accept that the iPhone's limited number of fonts makes translation necessary, but does Pages offer a way in which I can search and replace inappropriately substituted fonts for more logical alternatives?

    You noticed the first one yourself: the Found item list seems to randomly jump around the document -- I believe you are correct in your observation it may be due to the object construction order. That tells me, by the way, something about your lot numbers that tou didn't mention: your text is not one continuous long threaded story, but it's all or partially in disconnected etxt frames. The Found list does return everything inside a single story in the correct order, but it goes over each separate story in the order they were constructed.
    The only solution is to gather all of your lot numbers, *re-sort* them according to the page number they appear on (and some sort of Worst Case Scenario is when you might have more than one lot number frame per page; in that case you also need to sort by textframe, top to bottom -- yet even worse is if you also may have these textframes side by side!).
    Only then you have a reliable counting order.
    This isn't too bad. We can just extend the method I offered for sorting top-to-bottom/left-to-right in Re: Working around the frame selection order issue in CS 4 and make it also include page numbers:
    function byPageYX(a,b) {
        var
            aP = a.parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.index,
            bP = b.parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.index,
            aY = a.baseline[0],
            bY = b.baseline[0],
            aX = a.horizontalOffset[1],
            bX = b.horizontalOffset[1],
            dP = aP-bP,
            dy = aY-bY,
            dx = aX-bX;
        return dP?dP:(dy?dy:dx);
    myResults.sort(byPageYX);
    Or something like that.
    As for actually implementing the above I cannot be of any help with Applescript.
    Once we're dealing with sorting I think you're much better off in Javascript anyhow.

  • How to increase size of fonts in Menu bar and in Safari toolbar?

    How to increase size of fonts in Menu bar and in Safari toolbar?  Munu bar and Safari toolbar  fonts too small on a 24" iMac screen.
    Thanks in advance !

    If you want to change the size of the font of a TextEdit text document, you do it in the preferences. Alternatively, if you want control over the size of the fonts, make it a Rich Text document, and then you can change the font size. You can either use the Larger or Smaller options, or Show Fonts to choose a size. You can elect to have new documents be Rich Text in the preferences as well.

  • Font Embedding missing glyphs

    Hi all
    I want to to create a SWC with a font resource using the IDE.
    So I
    create in the library a font called Presenter_font I use
    Arial ( it has
    all the glyphs I need)
    I create a textfield and assign it Presenter_font* I embed
    the font ,
    I want to include some Greek symbols so I include the greek
    in the
    embedding options.
    I test the movie and all works fine "IFNβ" appears
    as it should
    Now the last part of the puzzle is to export for Actionscript
    so it
    becomes a class I can use elsewhere I do that using the
    linkage option
    and now when I test it I get "IFN" why has the beta glyph
    gone?
    I feel I am missing something ( as usual).

    No. Alas, I might add. There is some sort of auto-catch, specific for Symbol symbols, but no-one knows how it works and you cannot manipulate it yourself.
    If not, how to search/find those missing glyphs with GREP or script?
    Not specifically, i.e., you cannot search for "any missing glyph". Add a GREP style which changes just the font (make sure it doesn't set the font style as well, or else your Bolds or Italics might disappear). Create a new Preflight profile that checks just for missing glyphs, so you won't miss any.
    None of this can be automated though.
    .. it seems easily (not to identify the unicode ranges which seems not very easy) to find them using GREP, but I failed to find it.
    InDesign's GREP flavor doesn't allow named Unicode blocks (http://www.regular-expressions.info/unicode.html), but I have successfully used character ranges to automatically set the font for Chinese, for example.

  • Myriad Roman/Italic - font licensing issue?

    Dear all,
    I'm asking your help regarding a small issue with the Myriad Roman and Myriad Italic font.
    Today I opened an "old" document I created in a previous Illustrator version (CS 6). But when I wanted to save it into a pdf file, a bad message told me some parts of the file can't be saved due to font restriction: The font Myriad-Roman could not be embedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions. Stroke text will not be visible.
    How can I manage this? I have a lot of documents with Myriad Roman or Italic in it, so this is very disturbing for me right now... :-/
    Thanks in advance fo your help

    The fact that you freely “downloaded” these fonts makes this all very suspicious.
    Yes, you can replace these Myriad typefaces with the equivalent Myriad Pro OpenType typefaces, some of which were bundled with CS6 and earlier software. The investment in terms of modifying your content is relatively low if you have used styles appropriately and even if not, Illustrator will prompt you if a font is missing and let you globally replace (you would of course, remove those crufty, possibly hacked old Myriad typefaces first). If you don't have access to those previously bundled, the cost of getting a license for them in both $ and time is quite low compared to other alternatives.

  • More Than 7 Fonts?

    I think Buzzwords is great. Right up until I try to customize the look beyond the seven fonts hard-wired to the system. Does anyone have any idea how to upload, choose, install or otherwise expand the font selection beyond Minion, Myriad, Tekton, etc.?
    This is the make-or-break difference between me migrating all of our corporate documents (and having them retain our unique corporate look), and me still wanting to purchase desktop based apps for every machine in my business and maintaining an internal document server.
    Unfortunate, but true. There's a lot riding on brand standards.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for the feedback. We do understand that more fonts are desirable, but we are currently limited as described below ( from our Buzzword FAQ):
    Q: Why are there so few fonts?
    A: We download our own fonts in order to take advantage of Adobe FlashType technology which produces great-looking text on screen and in print. It also improves on our ability to display a document exactly the same way regardless of the computer or printer rendering our text.
    Buzzword is a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) word processor that looks the same on everybody's screen. Built-in fonts make sure everyone has the same fonts, and therefore sees exactly the same document.
    We want to limit the size of the download so that the user is up and running quickly. To that end we're only downloading 7 font families to start. In future releases, we'll look at accomodating additional fonts without impacting the download times

  • How to apply a new font for missing glyphs in another font?

    The situation:
    For an article, I want to use Font1, but some of the glyphs are missing in it, and are highlighted with pink boxes. Font2 have much more glyphs than Font1. I can apply Font2 manually for each of the missing glyphs, but it is tedious.
    Question:
    Is there a way for InDesign to do such substitution automatically? I.e., apply a default font, which can be specified by user, for all the missing glyphs.
    If not, how to search/find those missing glyphs with GREP or script? Since InDesign can identify the missing glyphs and marked them with pink boxes, it seems easily (not to identify the unicode ranges which seems not very easy) to find them using GREP, but I failed to find it.
    Any one know how to do this? Thanks.

  • Odd font issue with Safari, iWeb

    Ok, so I've been having this odd font issue with Safari for quite a while now, and I haven't been able to fix it. Some text on several different websites come up in a different font than the default font for Safari. I've tried changing the default font to something else, changing the text encoding and nothing. This has been happening with several releases of Safari.
    Now, last night I discovered the same thing is happening with iWeb. Some of the text fields come up with the same font as the one in Safari! I don't even know which font it is. So somehow these are linked.
    I'm at work right now, but I can get a screen shot of the font once I get home.
    Any ideas on how to remedy this?

    Hi Tom, thanks for the response. I tried searching for those two fonts in my font book and they weren't in there. See below for screen shots of the odd text I'm getting:
    iWeb
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    Safari
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    If anyone can help resolve I'd greatly appreciate it. As much as I like Safari, this odd font makes me close Safari after a few mins of browsing =\

  • Finding Substituted Fonts

    We have an InDesign file from a client to which we have to make a few changes, we also have their print-ready PDF supposedly created from the InDesign file.
    A math character is showing in InDesign with the dreaded pink background because the font is being substituted. I know this by turning off and on the "Substituted Fonts" option in the Preferences, Composition. The PDF indicates this character is in the Symbol font but InD still indicates a substitution (and the character doesn't look the same as what's in the PDF) even when we load the symbol font, Type1 or TTF. InD's font menu shows that the font is in Bembo (the text font) even though it is the Type 1 Bembo that does not even HAVE that character. I suspect all of this has something to do with the fact that this file was initially created on a Mac and we work in Windows, which I'm willing to live with and circumvent. However, any enlightenment would be much appreciated as to why InD flags the character but doesn't show it as being in the font it (apparently) was originally.
    As our archival service grows we're going to be opening other people's InD files more and more and I've not been able to find a way to search for characters with substituted fonts like this one. Turning on the option in the preferences and looking through the file manually is time consuming and prone to error at best, even for a good operator.
    I didn't see anything on the find dialog and I didn't see anything in the preflight (which really surprised me) and nothing shows up for it in the Find Font dialog. I even tried a quickie script checkig the status of the fons in the document but was unable to see anything that would help in identifying characters/fonts like this.
    Is there a way to find these other than manually looking for the pink background?
    Many thanks,
    Ken

    You can't often control what you are given (sometimes not at all), but one of the downsides of working on the PC is that the Mac TT and PS fonts won't work for you on their own (maybe they can be re-jiggered, but that will likely violate the EULA from the font maker). If you were on a Mac and the roles were reversed, you could use PC fonts, but that's beside the point. The best case scenario is if the files were set using Open Type fonts, since they are cross-platform compatible. I know this doesn't offer any fix for your problem, but I just wanted to throw it out there.
    There are versions of fonts that are different but have the same name, and I'm guessing this may be part of your problem. Even if you have the PC version from the same foundry as the Mac version, there may be differences. I'm not even close to being a font expert, so I can't tell you how it all works under the hood, but I imagine you are seeing pink because even though the font names are the same, the code is different, so the PC/InDesign is telling you you don't have the right font. The only option is to see if you can find other versions of the font that will work.
    And lastly (this may be a stretch), are there any character styles applied to this text that may be mucking it up?

  • Font rendering problem... (FLash BUG)

    Hi all, I have Flash instaled on two machines and both of them are having a problem when rendring flash text.
    All text on flash appears like the image bellow. And When I export to SWF the text stays the same.
    The font I'm using is Myriad Pro
    I'm running Flash on iMac i3 3.06 with 4Gb and 256 Graphics display so that can't be the problem.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks for the attention.

    Hi,
    i know this problem. It exists since the last os-x update.
    Until now there ist no solution - only two workarounds.
    a) reinstall osx and update only to an older version
    b) sometimes it helps me to close flash, restart flash and publish again.
    It seems only OTF Fonts make Problems. I know about problems with MyriadPro and DIN.
    There is also a problem creating PDF Files with the OS-X internal "Print as PDF" function.
    I hope there will be an update soon....

  • Added fonts unavailable to users

    Hi
    Have added some extra fonts on a number of computers into the admin account fonts folder , which is where apps put their fonts and which are recognised, but these new ones are not availble for users who log on. If I log in as the Admin user on that computer, they show up fine, but if I log as a student of teacher user, the fonts don't show up in Word or Appleworks.
    Can anyone enlighten me on what I am doing wrong, or what I have to do to make these available to users. I copied them to the computers with ARD.
    thanks

    Have you tried putting them in
    ClientMachine HD> Library > Fonts ?
    If you want anyone who is logged into the client to be able to use the fonts, make sure that the font files are all at least Read Only for Everyone in the permissions.
    This works for us with all our network users on each client machine.
    If I correctly assume that what you mean by admin fonts folder is HD>Users>admin user>Library>Fonts, the admin account fonts folder on the client may only be available to the admin. Most user files in their own folder are limited to that user's access only.
