Fonts messing up on non-english windows

I'm using Director 10.1 and Flash 8 Xtra for a 5 language
DVD-ROM, English, Spanish,French, German and Italian. The etxt is
stored in Director code and sent to several Flash 8 movies to
display them
Got results from my testing house today to say certain
characters not appearing when Spanish and Simplified Chinesse set
as OS Language on Win XP SP2. Both my flash movies and Director
text fields display ? instead of the relevant character. Sometimes
the character has an accent above it othertimes just a regular
letter like e or g. I am using embed fonts in both Director and
Flash. Avenir LT 85 Heavy seems to generate these ? and on some
screens in Director using regular text members the layout messes
(words apearing one character at a time on a line) when I use
Avenir 45 Book.
Now on my UK PC all 5 languages display fine, it's just on
these test machines.
Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?
Thanks
Kevin Boyd

Shouldn't be an issue if the font is embedded. The only thing
I can think
of is make sure that you're using the embedded version of the
font for every
text/field object. (There should be an * next to the font
name.) Also, is
this text set by the program? Or is it entered by the user?
If it's
user-entered text, a non-English keyboard may be inputting
foreign
characters which your embedded font may not support.
(Particularly the
Chinese one.) If it's necessary for the foreign-language user
to input
text, you may have to make some sort of conversion code to
make sure that
it's fully compatible.
I really hope that Adobe can do what Macromedia never would
and put Unicode
support into the next version of Director. Most problems like
this would go
away if they did that.

  • EvtFormatMessage function fails with error code 15033 (ERROR_EVT_MESSAGE_LOCALE_NOT_FOUND) on non-English Windows OS

    I have an App which subscribes to Windows events and if it is matching the filter criteria, it reports it.
    I have observed a strange problem on non-English windows 2008 OS.
    If the Windows event is of source = EventLog (e.g. Event ID 1102: Security log was cleared), then EvtFormatMessage fails with error code 15033. But if the event is of any other source (e.g. Microsoft Security Auditing), then it works absolutely fine.
    While calling EvtOpenPublisherMetadata, I have created locale ID as MAKELCID(MAKELANGID(0x09,0x01) i.e. Primary language = LANG_ENGLISH and Sub Language = SUBLANG_DEFAULT.
    I want events details in English only and hence primary language is put as English. If I change this macro to have primary language as LANG_CHINESE and sub language as SUBLANG_CHINESE_SIMPLIFIED, then it works fine but gives back event details in native
    OS language (Chinese in this case). That's not a desirable output for me.
    Following is the way I'm calling EvtFormatMessage
    EvtFormatMessage(hMetaData, hEvent[0], -1, 0, NULL,
                                   1 /* EvtFormatMessageEvent */,
                                   m_pTextBufferSize/sizeof(WCHAR),
                                   m_pTextBuffer, &dwBuffUsed);
    A work-around for this is to install a MUI pack for English language. If the MUI pack is installed then it works fine. But I cannot enforce users to have this pack installed on all their systems.
    My question is  why this API is working for some set of Events whereas failing for some specific Events? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Bug when getting file path in non-english Windows Vista

    Hello,
    I'm getting an error when trying to get the file path of a video in a non-english Windows Vista... The code is:
    var file = "video.flv"
    var filePath = air.File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath(file);
    filePath = filePath.nativePath;
    The filePath variable is used later by a flash video player to load the video file..
    In the brazilian Windows Vista the path of the StorageDirectory would be something like "C:\Usuários\(user name)\..." but if I run this script it returns "C:\Users\(user name)\..." as the native path.
    The problem seems to be in the "nativePath" function, cause I'm able to copy files to the app-storage folder using the "air.File.appicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath()" method without any problems.
    I could insert a small code which substitutes "Users" with "Usuários" but then it wouldn't work on an english Vista...
    Any ideas on this? Is there a way to check the language of the operating system in Air so to act accordingly?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
    has anybody found a solution?
    Testcase: SQL Developer 3.1 on a German XP with default NLS Settings
    CREATE TABLE "TEST_TABLE"
           "NUM" NUMBER
          ,"VCH"  VARCHAR2(10 BYTE)
        ) ;Test file test_insert.dsv
    num;vch
    1;KL
    1,5;tz
    12345,45;ooImporting using the wizard inserts the first row correctly, for the others I get
    SET DEFINE OFF
    --Einfügen für Zeilen  1  bis  3  nicht erfolgreich
    --ORA-01722: invalid number
    --Zeile 2
    INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE (NUM, VCH) VALUES (1.5,'tz');
    --Zeile 3
    INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE (NUM, VCH) VALUES (12345.45,'oo');Beside the wrong umlaut in the message the insert statement itself is correct, because you cannot use the german decimal separator "," in the script. The bug is, that it should use the same NLS settings for generating and running the script.

  • Apple, when an update for none english windows users ?

    Apple knows about that problem for over 10 days now but nothing yet.
    I'm in Montreal and all none english windows users are unable to "unlock" their new ipod and get that USB cable and itune Icon display.
    Come on Apple, are you becoming as bad as the PC and windows world.!
    If you guys could post here which country and language you have problem with. Thanks.
    _*Canada, QC, French*_.

    Looks like people using none english windows experience the same problem when they try to config for the first time their Ipod touch. You're gonna be able to connect to your computer to load songs and movies but when come the time to disconnect your device, the Ipod is gonna display (even disconnected from your computer) a screen with an USB cable and an itune icon. The result is that you're gonna be unable to turn your Ipod really on and listening the content of it.
    People in Japan, germany, France, etc... had the same problem because of none english windows setup.
    Good luck... My Ipod still doesn't work.

  • ICloud update messes with Regional Settings on non-English Windows 7

    I have Windows 7 in French.
    Since the recent update of iCloud (and also iTunes and Quicktime), my other software (Sage 50 Accounting) is dropping the digits entered after the decimal point.
    Strangely, while I have iCloud installed, when I open Sage 50 Accounting first and then select my data file to open, the problem occurs, yet if instead I open the data file directly and let Windows open the associated software (Sage 50 Accounting), the problem doesn't occur.
    If I uninstall iCloud, the problem is resolved, however, I'd like to continue using iCloud if possible.
    Any ideas what's going on here?

    It appears that you did not follow the step in Bootcamp Assistant where you were to download the Windows Support software. You then had to install the Support software from within Windows. Did you do that step? The display drivers are part of the Support software.

  • Vstest.console.exe does not find emulators on non-english windows

    Hi all,
    I am currently setting up my TeamCity build steps to build my app, deploy it to the emulator and then run unit and UI tests projects on it.
    For deploying, I use "AppDeployCmd.exe /install app.appx /targetdevice:6" where "6" is the ID of the emulator retrieved by "AppDeployCmd.exe /EnumerateDevices". This works well. The emulator is being started and the appx is
    deployed properly.
    For testing, I use "vstest.console.exe" together with a runsetting file which looks like the following:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <RunSettings>
      <MSPhoneTest>
        <TargetDevice>Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB</TargetDevice>
      </MSPhoneTest>
    </RunSettings>
    The device string is exactly the same which is printed by using "AppDeployCmd.exe /EnumerateDevices" and also visible in the Visual Studio selection.
    This works fine when using English as the primary system language of Windows. When using German, the emulator names are appended a "(DE)", so "/EnumerateDevices" and also Visual Studio display "Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB(DE)".
    For deployment, I use the index number which stays the same (6 in this example). For running the tests, however, neither "Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB" nor "Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB(DE)" are found by vstest.console.exe and
    an error is returned when using either string as the TargetDevice value in the runsettings file:
    Error: Could not start test run for the tests for Windows Phone app: The selected target device is not valid..
    I'm using the latest VS2013 tools with the latest WP8.1 SDK and already tried reinstalling everything.
    I'd appreciate if someone could help me running my tests on Windows with German system language.
    Thanks and best regards
    Sebastian

    Hi Nithak,
    thanks for your reply!
    As described above, deploying via AppDeployCmd works fine - I pass the ID/number which I received using /EnumerateDevices and then it works in both languages. The app is updated properly in the emulator and the next step in my CI progress would be to
    run the tests which require the app to be deployed.
    The problem is only vstest.console.exe where I pass a emulator name via the runsettings file.
    In my eyes there should be used IDs as well as neither "Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB(DE)" nor "Emulator 8.1 U1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB" are found by the tool.

  • Remote management non-English computers?

    Hi guys,
    I have an interesting situation. In our company appears to have computers with a non-English windows 7. My personal opinion is against it but what can I do. Sometimes i have to connect to notebooks, workstations and guess what Services, Event viewer etc.
    things are not in English e.g. German, Spanish and so on. So, my question is: When using Computer Management console to connect to these computers, how to see things in English in order to manage them? There should be a way because when I set GPO in English
    - it is applied. Thanks in advance

    Hi Kondio,
    Check This it might help
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows7/products/features/language-packs
    You can try this
    Install Language pack.
    capture the registry hive for English Export it as .reg
    Capture the registry hive for other languages and export as .reg
    Once you take remote you can just execute English.reg hive to change language to english after your work you can just change the language of OS to user preferred by executing the other language hive backup's

  • Non-English fonts problems.

    Hello guys,
    I have a problem with non-English (well Cyrillic) font. I faced this problem 3 days ago when was working in iDVD trying to type text there. The problem is if I type in Russian with chosen font it does no appear as its english counterpart. I have tried many of them but it seems all of them (except may be two or three) work same (wrong) way. I have also checked them in other programms and got the same result. I have even checked this in Photoshop CS2 but... guess.. the same!
    I have read lot's of topics but did not find a suitable solution for me although I used some of tips while working on the problem. For example I checked everything in System Preferences and Fonts folders. Everything is ticked/unticked there as appropriate.
    Hope you'll give me a solution.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hello Tom,
    thank you for your reply and for dealing with my problem. I am sorry for not being understandable. It may be because English is not my first language. I'll try to explain it in a different way. I was working on iDVD project and tried different fonts. As I was doing the project in both languages (English and Russian) because I wanted them to look the same. For English version I took Monotype Coursiva font (hope I spell right) as it was suitable to the whole theme of the project. When I typed with the same font in Russian it did not look like its English version but still readable (it is not the case of encoding problems when a text you have typed looks as the set of strange symbols). Then I tried Lucida Handwriting and oher having the same result. I have tried CY fonts as well but it was difference in appearence between letters and digits (I typed chapter names like this January 2007 and so on). Digits appeared different to russian letters, actually they were similar to English version.
    I switched to Mac a year ago from Windows and absolutely love it. In Windows I mostly used Word and Power Point to work with text and did not have such problems (hope windows users are not reading this now).
    I think it is related to Apple fonts because I noticed that all the applications share the same Font Book. I have tried different applications on my Mac in order to track the problem down and even Microsoft Office's Word for Mac which I use sometime was not able to do the job I requested. In other words I have same problem. May be my Font Book is not full? May be I need to update or upgrade it?
    Thanks.
    P.S. It's possible that my explanation is a bit complicated and you still cannot understand what the problem is. If so, would it be a good idea to send you some screenshots to be able to show you what I mean?
    If answer is "yes" will you give me your e-mail, please?

  • "Program files" directory problem during Microsoft Office Customization Installer in non-English versions of Windows

    We have a document-level customization solution for Word and are experiencing problems during deployment in an environment running on terminal services. The OS (Windows 2012) is English and Word (2013) is non-English (German).
    Installation is done into the "Program Files" folder correctly. But when trying to start a word document linked to the specific template. The "Microsoft Office Customization Installer" pops up with the error.
    "There was an error during installation"
    From: file:///C:/Programme/[CompanyName]/[Productname]/[Productname].vsto
    Downloading file:///c:/Programme/[CompanyName]/[Productname]/[Productname].vsto did not succeed.
    Exception: ....
    System.Deployment.Application.DeploymentDonwloadException: Download file:///C:/Programme/[Companyname]/Productname]/[Productname].vsto did not suceed. ---> System.Net.WebException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Programme\[Companyname]\[Productname]\[Productname].vsto'.
    ---> System.Net.WebException: ...... ---> System.IO.DirectoyNotFoundException......
    The problem seems to be that the installer is looking for C:\PROGRAMME instead of C:\PROGRAM FILES. C:\PROGAMME is the German localized name of PROGRAM FILES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program_Files).
    The installer installs the solution correctly deployed into c:\program files, but when the later a user tries to start it and the Microsoft Office Customization Installer is called, it tries to access the non-existing "c:\programme" folder. This
    doesn't exist, because Windows is English.
    Is there any thing related to deploying solutions on a platform which has different languages (mixing/matching of OS language and Office language?)
    Thank you for your help

    Hello,
    1. First, I would confirm with you whether you dealt with the localization for your document-level add-in?
    2. Did you use this way to define the Create a class that defines the post-deployment action part of Put the document of a solution
    onto the end user's computer (document-level customizations only) and did you get the path with Environment.SpecialFolder enum?
    To handle this, I would recommend you consider using Environment.SpecialFolder to set that property.

  • Issue with applying plugin in non-English version of AE on non-English version of Windows

    Hi There,
    I am encountering an issue related to my plugin and differing language versions of AE.  When I apply my plugin to a layer within a project opened in an English version of AE, everything behaves as expected.  However, when I apply the same plugin, in the same manner, on a non-English version of AE, I get an error message.  I am dealing with this debug process on Windows 8 in Spanish.  Here is the error I am receiving from the the Spanish version of CS6 on Windows8 (Spanish):
    "After Effects error: no se pudo cargar el plugin "Debug.aex" (126).
    ( 48 :: 46 )
    That basically says that the plugin could not be applied.  Is there any reason why I might get this error in the Spanish version and not receive it in the English version?  Do I need to setup VS2012 to build in release mode for it to work?  Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    Arie

    I did find this in the documentation, but am not sure if this is relevant.
    LOCALIZATION
    Thanks to the Unicode support added in CS4, localization is much less painful. For non- Unicode strings, such as in older function suites, we expect strings to be multi-byte encoded using the application's current locale. On Windows, you can use the WideCharToMultiByte() function, specifying CP_OEMCP as the first argument. On Mac OS, use the encoding returned by GetApplicationTextEncoding().
    I do not care if the actual strings are in english even though the plugin is loaded in a non-English install of AE.  Do I still need to do what this part of the documentation is specifying?  Can anybody show me some examples of localization for plugins?
    Thanks,
    Arie

  • Non english fonts

    I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.8. For some reason, it will not print non-English fonts. As an example, I have New Peninim installed. Fontbook recognizes and verifies it. When I set that as the font in Textedit, it shows the text I type in but it does not show it in that font, which is Hebrew, but shows it in an English Font style. It does the same thing with most any other non-English font except for Cyrillic fonts, which it will show. Any ideas?

  • Messed up non-English text

    I have worked on i18n for several time in various positions. I mess up non English text first time. The followings are the process:
    1.Copy translated text from MS word file into a text editor
    2. Run the native2ascii -encoding UTF-8 file1.properties to file2.properties to convert the unicode.
    What may cause text encoding error in the above steps?
    Thanks very much for your inputs.

    Is there a connection between the two steps? I don't see one. First you put some data into a text editor, then you ignore it and start working with a file.

  • How should I organize and disable non-english fonts.

    I'm a graphic designer and I'm having trouble organizing all of these random hebrew/japanese/chinese fonts that I never use.
    I don't want to screw up my system, but I also don't want to scroll through 200 fonts every time I want to find one.
    Is there an easy way I can find all of the non-english fonts and disable them?
    Fontbook freezes and crashes all the time for me, so I've been using Suitcase Fusion free trial for a few days and disabled a bunch of fonts through it. Though, it prevents me from disabling anything considered a "System Font" which is fine, only having the necesccary non-english fonts is okay, I just don't want 75% of my font list in my adobe applications to be un-usable fonts.
    I guess my problem is that by default, some fonts are pre-disabled on OS X, and should I run into problems, I want a way to easily re-enable these fonts if I need to. Also, since I've disabled so many fonts, I dont' know what ones are enabled by default. How would I go about restoring all of my fonts?
    I think it'd be nice to be able to sort all of the fonts by what language they're in. But I don't know what language the font is because I don't speak those languages. Another problem is that you can't organize local fonts in Suitcase. I think using fontbook would be my best option for this, before switching back to Suitcase for regular use, but I still have the problem of restoring my already disabled fonts correctly, and figuring out which fonts are in what language. Could anyone help me out with this?
