Fonts missing in Illustrator, but present in InDesign

I am asking this on behalf of our Art Department. I am the Systems Administrator. We have InDesign files from our customer, which our Art Department uses to produce pre-press proofs, and large-format digital prints. They have some files which look fine in InDesign, but when they create PDF's to bring into Illustrator to add crop marks, they show up with missing fonts. I am having them work around the problem by converting all the type to outlines before exporting, but we would prefer a better solution. The problem also appears using EPS for export.
We are on CreativeCloud, Macintosh OSX, Lion.

Thank you for you quick response. What is baffling to me is this is the same computer, where the InDesign file has no problem with the fonts in the file, but Illustrator does. The only reason we are using PDf as an interchange is that there doesn't seem to be any other way to get the InDesign files into Illustrator. Crop marks aren't the only thing our people are doing. I'm not an artist, but this is the workflow they have been using for years, and it's been fine until this season.
Even if this is the workflow they have been used for many years it is not a good workflow.
It is a no-go to convert fonts to outlines in InDesign it can cause demage.
It is not good to open any pdf in Illustrator if it does not come from Illustrator itself. If you need to use a pdf in Illustrator place it and link it. Otherwise the font information will be destroyed.
Crop marks should always be added with InDesign export.
Avoid EPS. It makes no sense to use it except for very simple graphics like bar code or a simple logo without transparency. There is no reason to export EPS neither. Why do you use EPS? What for?
If a font is available in InDesign but not in Illustrator it might be that this font is in a folder with the name "Document fonts" which is found on the same place as the indd file. These fonts are available only to indd files on that place.

Help. My user fonts suddenly don't show up in font book. I've tried all the standard fixes.
    - restarted in SAFE mode.
    - cleared the font cache
    - verified the disc
    - repaired permissions
    - reinstalled both font book and the user font folder from an older version in Time Machine
    - Verified all the fonts.
I haven't tried tossing them in another user account yet because I find the idea of having to reset up the entire user account alarming. Is there anything else I can try? These fonts all worked just days ago.
If I click on the fonts in the user folder they come up 'installed' and reappear. But as soon as I close and reopen fontbook they disappear again.

This might be too late to help Starhorsemac, but I just solved a nearly identical problem on my iMac running Mountain Lion.
The problem turned out to be that the fontd lauchd agent had been disabled for my account.  Re-enabling the agent made all of my user fonts re-appear in Font Book.
To check and see if fontd is running, open a terminal window and type:
launchctl list | grep -i fontd
If fontd is running, you'll get a line similar to this:
         154     -     com.apple.fontd
If fontd is running, your problem is different than mine.
If fontd is not running, you can start it with this command:
launchctl load -wF -D system com.apple.fontd
I hope someone finds this useful.

  • Fonts missing in CS4 but are installed in Win font folder.

Hi, newbie member and first forum post.
Problem - I have 270 fonts installed in the C/win/fonts folder but CS4 only displays ~120 fonts.
Is there another approach to getting CS4 to access all fonts?
I have followed up with most related posts on this forum but have not found a solution yet.

    Thank you - Paul

Photoshop doesn't always read the file name which is what you see in Explorer.
Do a right click on a font file and look at Properties.

  • Some data missing in Lookout, but present at device

We are using Lookout 3.8 to individually poll 20 channels of temperature data from Yokogowa chart recorders. Data from 10 of 20 of those channels is not present for a long period of time (over a year). No error messages were received. The data was present on the chart recorders for the same time period. For the channels that are missing, the data is blank, not even a number 3238 - which we get when the thermocouple is not connected.
Any ideas as to why some previous data may be missing? The system is still running and all channels now have continuous data for the past few weeks, although data is still missing from the earlier time period.
    Thanks for your help.

It's difficult to say exactly why those channels did not log any data. As you know, Citadel only logs data if it changes beyond the specified deadband. Is there any other information you could provide?
If you're concerned about the reliability of future datalogging, I recommend that you upgrade to Lookout 5.1. National Instruments has not supported Lookout 3.8 for several years. Newer versions of Lookout use Citadel 4 which offers significant improvements to the stability of the database.

  • Anyone have an issue where a font shows in the font list in Photoshop/Illustrator but not in Flash?

Anyone have an issue where a font shows in the font list in Photoshop/Illustrator but not in Flash?
I'm not 100% sure but i may have had flash open when installing, i then uninstalled the font and then reinstalled the font. I even tried going from an OTF font to a TTF font.
    No luck.
Do I need to do some sort of font cache clearing?

I'm using Adobe CS6 Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator on MAC OSX

Yes. It's rare, but some fonts do not play well with Flash. Flash seems to have a more strict method of evaluating a font that can be imported. This is, in my opinion, probably because Flash needs to create a faux version of a font when it is imported. There may be some information that is either missing or not acceptable to Flash in a particular font and so Flash won't allow it to be used - even if you're not going to import that font.

  • Is it possible to change the fonts in an illustrator document in Indesign or any other program BESIDES illustrator?

Is there a quick way to change/replace the font of an illustrator document in inDesign or any other app? Thanks

Depends on what is in the AI file.
CD does a normally good job unless there are meshes and a particular type of transparency (I forget which one). I usually don't get "fancy" AI files. Stock & Trade, bare-bones types of files. these open in a few of the applications I use daily. That said, I never do it unless I need to return a format other than AI--because, well, why? I always try to use the originating application with the exception of older EPS files. As a lot of the daily stuff I do is screen printing, and because most every screen printer I deal with use CD, at some point the art has to go into CD.

  • Fonts NOT showing up in Illustrator but are in Fireworks (CS3)

    Hi,
I have the CS3 package and it works great. However, I have a load of fonts on my system that are not appearing in the fonts menu in Illustrator CS3. I checked if Fireworks CS3 was picking them up and it is...this is great, but why not in Illustrator??
I also checked Photoshop, and they don't show there either. This is really weird. These are only basic fonts like "Helvetica" etc.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated on how to resolve this.
I am using Vista 64 and the CS3 suite.
    Thanks again,
    Mikey

Along with Mikey, I have a large number of fonts loaded but, when looking at them in the font list (with 'Preview' turned on), only about half of them actually display a font...the rest are blank. When I apply the 'blank' fonts to text, nothing appears. When I apply a functioning font that does show a preview, it looks fine. Maybe these are related issues?

When a paste copied text into InDesign Illustrator but without the trace?
It seems incredible to do a composition in Illustrator and copy-paste to make InDesign and draw all the text.
I'm using CS4 but I see in the help that CS5 is the same.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, I know that I can copy the text with the text tool. Although I would like to copy / paste from Illustrator to InDesign for editing if you need without having to play through two programs.
    Thanks for everything!

  • Photoshop CS6 Internal Font Missing!

Help,  I was using Extensis Suitcase Fusion 4 trial, and it ended, but when it did now because I can't use it, somehow it must have removed or just had de-activated the photoshop internal system font.    All of my panels and menus etc except for the top windows-menus lists, but everything else is missing - blank.   I can't do anything in photoshop practically speaking.  Cannot see any layer names etc... normal type-tool and fonts loaded show up, but nothing in the program itself.   So I can't even enter numerical values for anything.   Illustrator, Indesign, Flash, Muse, Bridge, Premiere, After Effects - -- all of these are working just fine.... what is the specific font I need to re-install for Photoshop to display?  It is the same font that starts listing when you open the program on the splash logo where it is saying "loading fonts" etc and all that stuff, its just blank... so please whatever that font is I need to know and install it to my windows directory again so I can use photoshop.   Thanks!

Hey,  got it fixed but I'm having trouble really nailing it down to why it happened... it has something to do with the arial font that photoshop uses and I must have not had it loaded...  I can only repeat it within the program by using Bitstream Fon Navigator to load all the arial fonts and when it does - it replaces whatever is loaded when photoshop starts - then the photoshop UI drops all internal fonts when you hover or switch panels etc...   but when I close and open again it works fine -- so it must have been that the Extensis trial ending dropped a key font that photoshop was looking for - and once I got it to find it again now it at least keeps it somewhere to load each time the program starts... hopefully this won't happen again but at least I know that I just have to load all arial fonts to get it back.   Thanks for the help either way, tried the resetting preferences but I couldn't even see any text in the window to reset it.

  • Font missing, how to find to replace?

I'm using Adobe Illustrator CS6, upgrading from CS5, on a Win7 machine. I have an old Type 1 face (Interstate) where I'm replacing it with a custom Open Type face from Font Bureau (InterstateRL). I  have removed the old font from my system, so I can root out every instance and replace it by opening each Illustrator file used weekly. When I open up the file, I get the expected message "InterstateTab-Regular: Font not found on the system; missing font has been substituted." Great, just what I expected! But when I go to find the font to replace it with the new font, I cannot find it in the file. I have done the following:
Look in Normal Paragraph Style (or any paragraph style). -- missing font not in use
Look in Normal Character Style (or any style) -- missing font not in use
Document Setup > Highlight Substituted Fonts -- None show up
Go to Find Fonts to search for missing font -- But it does not appear in Find Fonts
Go to Object>Path>Cleanup and check Empty Text Paths and click ok. Close and reopen document. -- done, no change
Check that there are no hidden layers -- There are no hidden layers or sublayers
Check to see if any text objects are formatted with no color that use the missing font - none are
Check the Patterns and Symbols, if there is any text inside those. Find Font only looks for what is in the document. -- Selected all symbols and deleted (these did not include text), no change.
Any other ideas for what I could try?

SOLUTION! This appears to related to the fact that the object in the file was a GRAPH. The increments had always appeared blank in the final document, and the corresponding cells in the datasheet were blank. To fix the problem,  I had to enter text in every blank cell in the first column of the datasheet to make it visible as a Category Axis label in the graph,. Since it didn't matter what the text was, I just used a period symbol in each empty cell. Then I could group select the Category Axis label text at the bottom of the graph, apply the Character Style with the preferred font, and CLEAR the override (if it appeared) to the Character Style.
I then closed and reopened, and the missing font message did not appear. I removed the periods in the datasheet, saved again, opened, and the missing font message appeared to be gone for good.
So it does appear that whatever font was assigned to the Graph Category Label text was still assigned, even though the font wasn't visible in any of the panels or through Find Fonts.
NOTE: The unwanted InterstateTab-Regular Type1 font NEVER APPEARED anywhere that I could see in Illustrator. It didn't appear in FIND FONTS or in my CHARACTER panel, even when I only selected one individual "invisible" increment, or one of the increments when it became visible with the period symbol. However, it was obviously embedded in the graph element itself at the time I had created the graph. And if I created a pdf file, from Illustrator or from the InDesign file the Illustrator art was linked to, it appeared in the FONTS tab. So it was clearly getting embedded in the pdf file. The only font that every appeared in any window, except for the missing fonts message on opening, was the correct InterstateRLTab Regular Opentype font.

  • Font missing issues

After seemingly resolving 'font missing' message when opening a document, the font is still highlighted in pale pink and I can't seem to get rid of it. Can anyone help?

Strangely enough, I seem to have resolved the issue myself, by removing the fonts from Font Book. Your last reply popped up as I was removing them, and I was going to reload them to font book, however when I went to inDesign to open the document and get you some screenshots, the issue seemed to have resolved itself, leaving me baffled, as I thought I had to have fonts installed in Font Book to be able to use them?
I do have a secondary issue with another font, Knockout, though. I have added this to Font Book, for use in the same document (I had no issues with this one going missing though), but when I view it in Font Book, it appears as shown below? Do you know why?

  • Symbol font missing problem

I have a Visio design containing symbols from Symbols font (in Windows) converted to PDF and then imported in the Illustrator CS 6. It says the symbol font missing and substitued with 'Myriad Pro', and those symbols are shown as crossed ('X'). As suggested in some posts, I tried to replace this font with <Symbol> font  (tried others as well) using 'Find Font', but it didn't replace. Can some one tell me a working solution, preferably the solution to the missing symbol font problem itself, if not a way to replace.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Raj

Placing seems to work even without flattening, but as you said cannot edit text anymore.
Regarding the other solution, that is where my problem was. I tried to assign the correct font  (and with some other fonts too just to check) to the text objects, but Illustrator doesn't seem to accept as the font remains the same 'Myriad Pro' all the time! It is infact what 'Find Font' does for font replacemet, if I understood correctly, but alas this too doesn't work.
Until there is no better solution, I can at least use the edit restricted place method for now! Thanks Monika for that.

  • Font usage (=fonts embedded in Illustrator)for stock design (=commercial purpose)

    Hi,
I have a question concerning the commercial usage of the fonts incorporated in Illustrator. Is it legal to use  them (after converted into outlines) for creating stock vectors and then selling them on stockphotos/designs web pages? If I have purchased the product itself, do I have to purchse also the embedded fonts separately in order to create files for commercial purposes? I would be grateful if you could provide me a clear and concreate answer. I have been searching for a month to get a response and I haven't found it yet. Thank you very much for your precious help.

I will assume that by “fonts incorporated in Illustrator” you actually mean fonts that are installed by Adobe as part of the installation of Illustrator. My response also applies for any other fonts licensed from the Adobe Type Library directly from Adobe.
You may use and embed fonts using Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop PDF and EPS output file formats without any restriction. That includes embedding them in files that you license to others. You don't need to outline or rasterize the text to remain legal. In fact, outlining degrades output quality since you lose “intelligent scaling” provided by the font technology and font definitions with result of overly bold and blotchy looking text at low magnifications and resolutions. Rasterizing is even worse since the results are tied to a particular resolution.
What you may not do is to sell artwork in .AI (Illustrator), .INDD (InDesign), or any one of the Photoshop formats with layers preserving live text and include the fonts as separate files. (You obviously could distribute such source files without the fonts and point your customers to where to license them!)
Clearly, the best option in terms of output of your artwork and designs for resale would not outlining or rasterizing text and saving or exporting as PDF (either PDF/X-4 or High Quality Print options) maintaining color management and live transparency (if used).
              - Dov
PS:  This advice with regards to fonts may or may not apply to fonts sourced elsewhere. You must read the EULA (End User License Agreement) associated with the fonts you plan to license. Some may allow embedding but require royalties for the distributed PDF or EPS files that have the fonts embedded. Some prohibit outlining or treat outlining the same in terms of restrictions as embedding the font itself. And some have similar restrictions on rasterization. Check such terms before you license a font!!! Yes, you must read the licenses!

  • Fonts missing – though I'm 100% sure I'm not using them

    Hi,
I've got a Keynote file, which I'm sure is only using one font ("Lato" from google fonts). Every time I open it, it says it's missing 2 more fonts (Cantarell and SourceSansPro).
I'm 100% sure the fonts are absolutely nowhere in the template. Not on any slide, and not in any Styles Preset:
I checked all presets and they only use Lato.
I duplicated the Keynote file and deleted all slides and all master slides apart from one. All I have left is an empty, white slide with absolutely no elements on it. Save -> reopen -> still says it's fonts missing!!
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I created the file, but during the creation of the file, the Lato font was not installed – I'm 100% sure.
The square shape was copied over from another presentation I created. And THAT presentation was using the Lato font (though NOT in the shape I copied over). For the new presentation, I don't use Lato and I also don't want to have to install it. I don't want to run around in circles, particularly not with installing fonts on iOS.
Anyway – the square only serves as a simple example, in order to illustrate the problem in a concise way. There's a lot more shapes that I want to copy from the old "Lato" presentation to this new one. NONE of those shapes have any fonts or text inside them, yet they still come up with the "font missing" problem.
I'm hoping that someone from the Apple Support team is reading this.
