Fonts missing in MathType EPS equations

Hope someone can help me!  Have an InDesign file, originally created in 2010 using CS4.  Now using CS6 to update.  Original layout had a placed Word document containing thousands of MathType equations; for some of the content the writer typed directly in the body of the Word file (x + y = z); others he used MathType to create the equations, which are now linked as EPS files in the InDesign file.
Our problem is some of the linked EPS files are not showing the correct font.....where the fonts should be Times New Roman italic, we are seeing Helvetica in our InDesign layout.  The preview icon next to the linked EPS image (on the left in the Links palette) is showing the correct italicized text.  When I open the problem eps files in Illustrator, the font that's supposed to be the Times New Roman Ital is getting substituted with Myriad Pro.  BUT when I open the problem EPS files to edit them in MathType 6.7, the italicized Times New Roman font appears correctly.
This problem is inconsistent...some MathType generated eps equations are fine and will appear right next to some that aren't (even the same equations!)   Am not getting any font error messages in InDesign; have tried turning on/off Times New Roman in Suitcase and Font Book.  Have tried deleting cached font files.
Again, the document has thousands of equations so can't just manually open up each in AI or MathType to fix/swap fonts.  Have had some success bringing sections from original 2010 Word file into a fresh CS6 document but it's not an option to re-layout the entire document.
Any ideas?    Am tearing my hair out!    THANKS!

So, anyhow: you have PICT files with embedded PostScript.
It's not super-surprising to me that they are hard to read and InDesign doesn't do what you expect.
Also, they are malformed, or at least mutant, because their embedded raster image is in a different font their embedded PostScript.
Preview.app can read them if you rename them to .pict first.
It gets the fonts right.
I am not really familiar with PICT files (aka QuickDraw Picture Comments?). I just spent far too long slogging through the legacy apple reference, Imaging With QuickDraw. Ow my head hurts.
Ideally you want to mass convert these files to EPS (or some other reasonable format).
I don't know how you should do that.
Hopefully MathType can offer you a solution.
Maybe MathType is scriptable with AppleScript (I dunno, I don't have it).
That's about all I can do. Hopefully someone else can help you out.
Oh, I suppose a fallback would be to script Preview.app. It can open them and save them as PDF. But unfortunately it saves them as raster images (of high resolution) and of course they are not further editable in MathType. But it is possible to script Preview.app, so you could do a bulk conversion there.
Oh, another choice is to extract the PostScript from the PICT file by hand/magic/handwave/whatever and then doctor it so that it does work. This is actually kind of straightforward, you just replace
currentpoint 3 -1 roll sub neg 3 1 roll sub
1888 div 512 3 -1 roll exch div scale
currentpoint translate 64 8 translate
with some scale factor that works, like:
0.1 0.1 scale
Unfortunately, this seems to give...messed up font positioning:
so it's probably not the way to go. (And is that x backwards???? Umm… )
Anyhow, yeah. Happy New Year.

  • Fonts issue with MathType EPS in InDesign

We have been using MathType 6.7e version for creating equations as eps format on Mac OS 10.6. We will import the same into InDesign CS6 for doing pagination. On a particular title, we have used the OTF font name "KozGoPro-Regular.otf" (Chinese/Japanese font) in the MathType to create the equation.
When we place this eps file (MathType) in InDesign CS6, a pop-up error message appears on the InDesign (screen shot appended below) and the eps file has turned to grey box without appearing actual content. The problem is with the font using in MathType equation  and import into InDesign whereas no issue if we could apply the same font for a text in InDesign. The appearance of the text shows right font without issue.
Much appreciated if you could help me on this issue.

Can you try to convert the EPS in the Distiller to a PDF file, but make sure that
you have not used any false style on the first place in the file,
that all used fonts and styles are installed on the computer,
that the file and the licence is allowing you to embed the font into a PDF and
that you make a Distiller Joboption which will embed completely all used fonts, or at least all used glyphs.

  • Font missing issues

After seemingly resolving 'font missing' message when opening a document, the font is still highlighted in pale pink and I can't seem to get rid of it. Can anyone help?

Strangely enough, I seem to have resolved the issue myself, by removing the fonts from Font Book. Your last reply popped up as I was removing them, and I was going to reload them to font book, however when I went to inDesign to open the document and get you some screenshots, the issue seemed to have resolved itself, leaving me baffled, as I thought I had to have fonts installed in Font Book to be able to use them?
I do have a secondary issue with another font, Knockout, though. I have added this to Font Book, for use in the same document (I had no issues with this one going missing though), but when I view it in Font Book, it appears as shown below? Do you know why?

  • Symbol font missing problem

I have a Visio design containing symbols from Symbols font (in Windows) converted to PDF and then imported in the Illustrator CS 6. It says the symbol font missing and substitued with 'Myriad Pro', and those symbols are shown as crossed ('X'). As suggested in some posts, I tried to replace this font with <Symbol> font  (tried others as well) using 'Find Font', but it didn't replace. Can some one tell me a working solution, preferably the solution to the missing symbol font problem itself, if not a way to replace.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Raj

Placing seems to work even without flattening, but as you said cannot edit text anymore.
Regarding the other solution, that is where my problem was. I tried to assign the correct font  (and with some other fonts too just to check) to the text objects, but Illustrator doesn't seem to accept as the font remains the same 'Myriad Pro' all the time! It is infact what 'Find Font' does for font replacemet, if I understood correctly, but alas this too doesn't work.
Until there is no better solution, I can at least use the edit restricted place method for now! Thanks Monika for that.

  • When I export an indesign document the graphics are missing from the eps file.

When I export an indesign document the graphics are missing from the eps file.

The why it isn't working can be a number of reasons. While I never have exported an EPS out of ID before, I just tried it and it worked fine.
What "graphics" are missing? I used bitmaps, native drawn ID vector, lines and a placed EPS file. Came into AI as an opened EPS fine.
Links up to date? For items not hitting the EPS, are they on a layer set to non-printing?
In the export dialog,General tab, PostScript Level 3? Data format set to ASCII? On the Advanced tab, Send Data set to All? OPI off?

  • Opera fonts missing/garbled? [solved]

I just did an Arch installation on my desktop out of curiosity, and it is FAST AS A MOTHER(rhymes with)TRUCKER ... now I can see what the whole rage was about!  I've been running it on my 233Mhz Dechutes laptop w/212MB ram and THAT runs well, man!!  2.35 Ghz really shows.
Anyway ... I have installed (via pacman) xorg, xfce4, opera, and some other misc stuff, and when using opera, I can't help but notice that there are fonts missing.  I have opera set to pop-up a progress bar at the bottom of the page as things load, and I see a lot of boxes, empty spaces, and sometimes kanji characters.  Also, in the transfers window, there is no text at all.  Like where the filename, size, etc. should be, there is just blank space.  Very weird.
Is anyone having a similar problem?  Is there a font pack that I should install or something?  Everything runs spankin ... except for opera.  And that still runs very spankin, just the fonts ... they don't.
    Thanks all!

    I had the same problem...
In opera no text in transfer window, in console - corrupted MC...
Fixed it by changing my locale=en_US.utf8 to en_US.85... can't remember exact numbers... You just edit /etc/locales.gen file - uncomment that en_US.85...... and then save and run locales-gen...
It workeg for me now i have a beautifull MC in console and everything else
    I'm using fluxbox...

  • Error message: Helvetica Medium outline font missing when creating PDF's

Error message: Helvetica Medium outline font missing when creating PDF's. Where can I downlaod it and why is it suddenly happening?

    OS? Version of ID?
This means that either you have an extra Helvetica Medium font installed and it's interfering with ID finding the T1 version, or the T1 version is damaged. I found this really old thread that explains it fairly well: http://www.asadesigner.com/22-indesign/2d812de56777cc90.htm
The good news is that it's probably only affecting the page information marks.

  • Fonts missing – though I'm 100% sure I'm not using them

    Hi,
I've got a Keynote file, which I'm sure is only using one font ("Lato" from google fonts). Every time I open it, it says it's missing 2 more fonts (Cantarell and SourceSansPro).
I'm 100% sure the fonts are absolutely nowhere in the template. Not on any slide, and not in any Styles Preset:
I checked all presets and they only use Lato.
I duplicated the Keynote file and deleted all slides and all master slides apart from one. All I have left is an empty, white slide with absolutely no elements on it. Save -> reopen -> still says it's fonts missing!!
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I created the file, but during the creation of the file, the Lato font was not installed – I'm 100% sure.
The square shape was copied over from another presentation I created. And THAT presentation was using the Lato font (though NOT in the shape I copied over). For the new presentation, I don't use Lato and I also don't want to have to install it. I don't want to run around in circles, particularly not with installing fonts on iOS.
Anyway – the square only serves as a simple example, in order to illustrate the problem in a concise way. There's a lot more shapes that I want to copy from the old "Lato" presentation to this new one. NONE of those shapes have any fonts or text inside them, yet they still come up with the "font missing" problem.
I'm hoping that someone from the Apple Support team is reading this.

  • Fonts missing in Illustrator, but present in InDesign

I am asking this on behalf of our Art Department. I am the Systems Administrator. We have InDesign files from our customer, which our Art Department uses to produce pre-press proofs, and large-format digital prints. They have some files which look fine in InDesign, but when they create PDF's to bring into Illustrator to add crop marks, they show up with missing fonts. I am having them work around the problem by converting all the type to outlines before exporting, but we would prefer a better solution. The problem also appears using EPS for export.
We are on CreativeCloud, Macintosh OSX, Lion.

    MarkTJohnsRSSP wrote:
Thank you for you quick response. What is baffling to me is this is the same computer, where the InDesign file has no problem with the fonts in the file, but Illustrator does. The only reason we are using PDf as an interchange is that there doesn't seem to be any other way to get the InDesign files into Illustrator. Crop marks aren't the only thing our people are doing. I'm not an artist, but this is the workflow they have been using for years, and it's been fine until this season.
Even if this is the workflow they have been used for many years it is not a good workflow.
It is a no-go to convert fonts to outlines in InDesign it can cause demage.
It is not good to open any pdf in Illustrator if it does not come from Illustrator itself. If you need to use a pdf in Illustrator place it and link it. Otherwise the font information will be destroyed.
Crop marks should always be added with InDesign export.
Avoid EPS. It makes no sense to use it except for very simple graphics like bar code or a simple logo without transparency. There is no reason to export EPS neither. Why do you use EPS? What for?
If a font is available in InDesign but not in Illustrator it might be that this font is in a folder with the name "Document fonts" which is found on the same place as the indd file. These fonts are available only to indd files on that place.

  • Batch import of eps equations into indesign

Hi, I am Thangaraj Mohan, working as an layout artist. Now I am working on a Math book which has tones of equations in it. The whole text keyed in MS word, and the equations are typed inside using mathtype. I exported all equations using mathtype, mathtype exports all equations and replaces with its file name (ie. <<equ001>>) in MS word.
Now my problem is to how place these equations inside the InDesign document. Please help me with your ideas to import all eps files into InDesign as Batch import.
    Thanks a lot.

    hi
you don't need to export Equations as EPS file s- you can jest Copy and Paste or Place your document - all Equations will be imported as embeded graphics - with bad preview - but with Vector contents so they will print fine
if you really need to reimport EPS files - then you need macro to surround Equations with tags which then can be used by script to place EPS files
    from:
    9.1 a) ###  b) ###  c) ###  d) ###
    to:
    9.1 a) <EQ1<###>EQ1>  b) <EQ2<###>EQ2>  c) <EQ3<###>EQ3>  d)  <EQ4<###>EQ4>
but this will require that you will have only equations - no other images - or you will need to renumber-rename files

  • Font errors in some fonts (missing "o") only when printing. Snow Leopard.

In a couple of fonts I use most commonly, the letter "o" (lower case o), does not print. A space appears when the letter should be. It displays fine on the screen. In a QuickView of the font file, the letter is also missing. This just started after I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    1. What is causing this?
    2. How can I fix it?
    3. Is there a good application that will let me see in innards of the font in detail?
    4. How could the display differ from the printed version?
    More info:
These fonts were originally purchase a long time ago (about 15 years ago) from Adobe. They are Berkeley and InterState.
The problem occurs in all variations of the fonts.
I have 100s of fonts; so far only these two are affected, but I haven't been able to look at every other font.

What I don't understand is 1) why these fonts worked in Leopard but not Snow Leopard and 2) why these particular fonts.
If you search you will find a large number of posts in these forums about changes in Snow Leopard related to fonts, e.g.

  • Printing problem when PDF is sent to the printer with certain fonts - missing text

I'm running into a printing problem when PDFs containing certain characters of the Calibri font are used.  The text in large sections of the PDF is missing on the paper version, but the text is there on the screen.  It's also happened when the PDFs we created were e-mailed out to a client and printed on their printer.  The problem is not present when printing directly from the programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, etc.).  I've been trying to get tech support from Adobe on this, but every time I call they apologize and say they will call back in 4-6 hours with an answer.  Same result each time, no call back.  If anyone from Adobe is listening, it's case number 184891587.  The font appears as an embedded subset when I look at the document properties.  Sometimes deleting one or two Characters allows for larger text blocks to be printed - i.e. removing a long dash in bold from the heading of a paragraph makes the paragraph reappear when printed to paper from PDF.  In all cases the PDF appears correct on the screen.  Printing as an image allows the text to appear, but the image quality isn't acceptable for small text, even at the 600 dpi setting on the printer.  If the PDF is sent out by e-mail, we do not have control over the end-user's printer setup anyway, so we need this to work in all cases.
The setup/process I'm using is as follows:
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit
Microsoft Office 2013 - problem is present when printing documents from Word, Excel or Visio.  Even other variations on documents.
I've tried Acrobat versions 11.0.0 to 11.0.5 as well as Acrobat Pro 11.0.0 and 11.0.1.  Same Result
Printing to Adobe PDF as the printer, from the third party application
Printing to a Xerox printer from PDF using Acrobat - Text missing
Client prints to Konica printer - Text missing
I print to the wide-format Ricoh (which also does 11x17) and the text is present.
Is there something I'm missing?  Is the entire font not getting embedded into the PDF file?  I noticed that rolling back to a much older version of the Calibri font (1.02 compared to 5.72) makes the problem mostly go away, but it's not completely gone.  Is it possible the font is too large to be completely embedded?  Where can I go from here?

Success!  At least for now.  It looks like my problem was fixed with Adobe's most recent update, 11.0.06.  From the release notes:
    PDF creation
Added support for Lotus Notes 9.
Added support for WebCapture in IE 11.
Added support for conversions from AutoCAD 2013.
3652540 A blank pdf is created for files having hidden visual style.
3601108 Flow Chart converts as a multicolored square.
3654345 Word documents missing parts of images in conversion to PDF.
3654572 Temporary file size increases when creating pdf by combining multiple files into one PDF.
3670155 PDF file created with Distiller XI prints incorrectly to some printers. (Emphasis mine)
3599407 Checkbox check marks do not appear in these files.
3663233 IE Web Capture in localized OS: Icons and drop-down menu items are missing and conversion dialog is not localized.
3651931 Chrome Only: Few web pages when converted to pdf from Chrome plugin doesn’t show up the Save As dialog.
3597910 EPM Mode On: Web capture is not working on Windows 8-32 bit when cache folder is missing.
3610644 Firefox 23.0: With Firefox version 23.0 (latest), the WebCapture icon shows up very dim as if it is disabled.
3650244 ODA falis to convert DWG files to PDF for large files.
I don't know if that's definately what solved the problem, but it sure sounds similar and this is the update that made the printing problem go away.  We can't get the PDFs to fail at this point with our printers, even with Calibri 5.72.  I'll come back to thread if we have printing problems at the end-user locations.

  • Fonts missing in Photoshop CS5

I have many DVD case templates I created with Photoshop CS2.  I now have Photoshop CS5.  I am opening these DVD case templates with PS CS5.  There have been several instances where the fonts I used in CS2 is not available in CS5.  Is it possible for me to import these fonts into PS CS5?  If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Angela

One follow-up question concerning the "missing fonts" issue.....
With Photoshop CS5, if the font is missing the program will alert you.  Because of these alerts, I was able to determine which fonts were missing in my Photoshop projects and install the missing fonts.
Unfortunately, Premiere Pro CS5 will use the "next best" font if a font is missing.  Therefore, I was trying to determine which fonts were "incorrect" within my APP CS5 projects and install the missing fonts accordingly.
My question.....I have approx 360 fonts from my XP computer.  Would there be any harm in installing all of these fonts on my Windows 7 computer, to make sure I cover my bases?  Currently, there are approx 300 fonts on my Windows 7 computer.
I have verified that if I try to install a font that is currently on my Windows 7 computer, I will get a prompt asking if I want to replace the existing font.  Obviously in this case, I would not replace an Windows 7 font with a Windows XP font.
    Take care,
    Angela
