Fonts not installing in Leopard 10.5

I've just installed Leopard, no problems except that I can't get my 3rd-party fonts into Font Book. In fact Font Book has been playing up a lot. The first time I restarted after the install I noticed that one of the system fonts (possibly Helvetica) used by iCal and a few of the Widgets wasn't rendering correctly. I have had to delete the FontBook.db file and it's preferences .plist file which improved things a little.
However, when I try and drag font folders into Font Book it tends to just crash Font Book so I've only been able to install a fraction of my fonts. Note, these are all fonts that worked without any problems on Tiger 10.4.
Any help would be much appreciated.

One problem that Font Book is having in Leopard is dealing with the actual fonts found out in the wild. Not only are there thousands of different typefaces in circulation (many of them badly made), but it sometimes happens that one person's copy of a font has a specific corruption not shared by other copies. This seems to be at the root of the installation problems and crashes.
If Font Book is crashing when you try to install a font, even if you can get a solution to your prbolem here, file a bug and, if possible, include the font or a pointer to it. It speeds up bug fixing if the circumstances triggering the bug can be reproduced as exactly as possible, and the more people file bugs about a particular problem, the faster it's going to get fixed.

Is there an app that will let me print simple font samples for those not installed? I have a large library of fonts and I'd prefer not to install - that would be pretty time consuming. TIA.
BTW - I do have FAP but it only lets me print installed fonts.

Hi; I have reinstalled AICS2 on a new machine and for some reason some of the fonts did not install (Eurostil, for one); after updating via the Adobe Updater, the font still does not appear, even though I have it on the old install. Anyone ever come across this issue?

They may not be fonts Illustrator CS2 installs, as "Eurostil" is not a font Adobe includes with it's programs.

  • Will not install with Leopard

I just migrated from an older iMac G4 to a newer iMac 2GHz
Intel Core Duo. To my chagrin I then discovered that Director MX
2004 would not work on an Intel machine. So... I upgraded to
Director 11. After all the hassle of proving (once again) that I am
an academic, I received the confirmation and link so that I could
download and install the new version. Alas...! When I run the
installer, it says: "This software cannot be installed because the
file system of the OS volume is not supported." WHAT? Director 11
won't install on Mac OS 10.5.2 (Leopard), but it will on Win-doze
    Vista???
HELP! I need Director! It is the prime piece of software that
I use to create programs for my classes!

SujaiS: I found the problem! My hard disk was formatted
"journaled (case-sensitive)". After searching through lots of
discussions and support files, I learned that apparently several
Adobe applications will not run with that format.
I therefore had to boot from my Leopard install disk, erase
and reformat the hard disk as only "journaled' (NOT
"case-sensitive"), reinstall Leopard, then restore the contents of
the hard drive from my Time Machine backup. I have since managed to
install Director 11 just fine. It has shown some odd bugs, however.
For example, a cast member with text (using an embedded font) now
shows an exclamation mark on a following line... but there IS no
exclamation mark to delete, let alone a following line! Weird! I
tried changing to another embedded font, and the program crashed.
    Hmmmm.
At any rate, I would suggest that Adobe needs to specify for
Director 11, under Mac system requirements, that "case-sensitive"
formatted hard disks will NOT work. That is a simple warning to
include. Adobe is obviously aware of that incompatibility, since it
mentions it under forums and technical issues for other programs.
Shouldn't they list that system requirement from the get-go?
    Thanks for your suggestions!

  • 802.11n enabler not installing on Leopard

MACBOOK PRO getting error (after re-purchasing the 2 dollar 802.11n enabler) on Leopard
Tried to install and it tells me cannot install on this hard drive
    Help!!!!!

If you have Leopard installed, the enabler must be included in the install because I followed the directions listed on that page...
+Before purchasing the 802.11n Enabler software, please check to make sure that your Mac does not already have the 802.11n enabler already installed.+
+Open Network Utility (found in the Applications > Utilities folder)+
+Under the Info Tab, choose Network Interface (en1)+
+In the section "Model: Wireless Network Adapter," if it says (802.11a/b/g/n), you already have the 802.11n enabler installed. If it says (802.11a/b/g), you do not have the 802.11n enabler installed.+
I looked and mine says a/b/g/n so its already installed and I didn't download that enabler. You may way want to try uninstalling it. Hope that helps, good luck
edit: i have leopard installed as well, forgot to mention that.

  • Dingbat fonts not displaying in Leopard 10.5.2

I just spent the day troubleshooting a problem where Zapf Dingbats wouldn't display in Quark 6.52 on an Intel iMac running 10.5.2. Thinking the problem was a naming conflict, I decided to remove all PostScript fonts, replacing them with OTF versions that had unique names. As an added precaution, I archived and installed Leopard again.
When I tested Quark in 10.5, +ITC Zapf Dingbats Std+ worked, but after installing 10.5.2 it didn't.
So I called Apple, and while testing it turned out that other dingbat fonts such as Symbols, Webdings, Wingdings, etc. didn't work in TextEdit and Pages. The Tier 2 tech said it is indeed a problem with the latest Leopard update and that he'll let me know in the next five days what the workaround or solution is.
So I'm posting this to help those with similar problems avoid a long call to tech support. When I have an answer I'll post that.

In showing this anomaly to someone this morning, I pasted Dingbats & Wingdings strings into a bare TE document, and, indeed, it gets the Private Use character substituted all over.
If you make the TE doc rich text, select those PUA chars, and set the font to Dingbats or whatever, do you get the right stuff?
And, while Keyboard Viewer input doesn't work for TE (still Lucida Grande subbed), it works fine in other applications, like Word. Do you think that, then, it's still Kbd Vwer mapping at fault? I find it hard to believe that Word is smart enough to overcome that flaw somehow...
Unfortunately I don't have Word to test, but I would wonder whether it is actually displaying PUA points or is just somehow using Latin points with its own non-Unicode fonts or something like that.

  • Snow Leopard not installing over Leopard

Since Leopard isn't doing any software updates, I decided to install 4BG Ram and then I found a local computer store that still had Snow Leopard to sell.  (Lucked out there!)  The ram installed successfully but, when I put the Snow Leopard disk in, it won't install.  It let me go through the steps to set it up and, when I click "Install", it just sits there.  The progress bar doesn't move and the time remaining stays at 45 minutes.  The computer sits quietly.  I left it that way for an hour just in case, but, nothing.  Any tips?  I called the store and they said my optical drive might not be reading the disk.  I can't bring my computer in because I take city transportation and have to walk quite a ways.  Any help offered would be appreciated!
I haven't had ANY problems with Leopard at all.  I'm just upgrading to Snow Leopard so I can then upgrade to Mountain Lion.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Old fonts not recognized under Leopard

I have a number of old T1 and Mac TrueType fonts that aren't recognized under Leopard. They worked fine under OS X through 10.4, but now are either showing up as type "Unix Executable File" with a generic black executable icon, or as a plain white icon with the type "Document". The files sizes appear to be correct, i.e. the issue is not zero length files. Since the OS doesn't present these files as fonts, font editors don't recognize the files as something they can open, either.
Anyone else running into this problem? Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

I've seen that thread, and in the end it seems to boil down to being careful when transferring files over a network. That didn't happen to my files, they never moved, and they worked under 10.4 and don't under 10.5.
I have noticed something new, though: the fonts that don't work show a greater-than-zero size in the Finder, but a zero file size when listed under the Terminal, i.e. the command line utility 'ls' shows these files as having a zero length, but the Finder shows the correct size.
So, it looks like a resource-fork-related issue, but it's not a case of a missing resource fork. The Finder sees the correct file size, but no longer recognizes or identifies the files correctly. Weird.
    Any suggestions?

  • CS3 will not install on Leopard

Please see my previous thread of the disaster that is installing CS3 on Leopard 10.5.4 If anyone is still out there that has followed my 5 days of agony--I was finally sent a new dvd. If anyone is still following this, the advice to install Tiger was a complete and total disaster. As far as my experience is going, NEVER revert to an older system. My mail, documents, everything is a complete mess, has to be hand "carried" to the new/old system, apps don't work because they are not the correct version for the new/old system, etc. "Menu/Archive" Mail in my clone startup disk (leopard) doesn't work, so I can't get my mail to Tiger. I wish I had never heard of Adobe Photoshop Upgrade.

  • Fonts not installing?

I'm currently installing my fonts onto my new iMac. Everything seemed to be going straightforward and upon double clicking on the font and then installing said font, the font was then showing in Fontbook.
The problem is now, any fonts I try to install now are not being added at all. In 'User' within Fontbook I'm stuck at 191 fonts and unable to add anymore.

  • Fonts not installing on FontBook after OS X Yosemite upgrade

After I installed OS X Yosemite, I open FontBook to install new fonts. The font installation windows appears (Validating, Installing, etc.) but then it disappears and none of the fonts installs. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?
    I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

I actually looked elsewhere for an answer and found I had to download the Adobe Creative Cloud to successfully download Acrobat Pro.
As a new Adobe user, it is a pretty poor that (a) there is not a full installation guide catering to all user levels and (b) Adobe still seem unaware of the problem judging by the responses to my original post and (c) ACC is another pay monthly option over and above Pro 11.
Forgive me if this is obvious to experienced Adobe users, it is not to me.

    Good Morning All:
I have a disk of fonts that I need to install that are a part of a visual identity package from my University. I am trying to use them in LiveType to no avail. They just come up as .exe instead of the font. The instructions tell me to simply copy them to the library.
    Any help would be appreciated

    1. Insert the disc that contains the new font, or copy the font to your hard disk from another location.
    2. Double-click the icon for the font in the Finder. Font Book opens and displays the font so you can see what the font looks like.
    3. Click Install Font.
It should then be available in the list of fonts in Live Type or the text fonts in FCP
