Fonts set in outbound mail appear differently in recipient's mailbox

I run all of my Mac Mail v4.2 (1078) in Verdana 11pt. I have a variety of elaborate signatures, also set to Verdana 11pt. When I author outbound mail, in Verdana 11pt, attach one of many signatures, and then view those emails on receiving computers, some appear as authored, but most show up with the signature in Verdana 11pt, but the body in a generic serif font (perhaps Times or similar). I cannot figure out how to keep the entire email in Verdana 11pt, on all receiving computers. Happy to attach PDF for a visual, but not sure that's possible in Apple forums?
Many thanks.

Mail > Preferences does not have a setting that determines the font seen at the other end. You must set that individually for each outgoing in the New Message pane. Also you may need to set it to something else than what is set in Mail > Preferences.
Some users find this behavior too cumbersome and prefer to use another email client which does have this feature, such as Entourage or Thunderbird.
It has been discussed here often and at length, e.g.

  • Can cells set to custom format appear differently on different versions of MS OFFICE?

I'm currently involved in a data enrichment project where we convert some financial data for our clients in excel. We've been facing a problem with date formats in the reports sent to us by the client.
We're supposed to enter 4 different dates in separate columns with 3 different formats. For example in one column the date format should appear in the dd/mm/yyyy format and in another as dd-mm-yyyy. What we've done is set all these cells to CUSTOM format
and in the TYPE dialog in the Custom Tab typed "dd\/mm\/yyyy" where we need the date to appear as dd/mm/yyyy and "dd-mm-yyyy" where we need the date to appear as dd-mm-yyyy.
However, the client says that when he downloads the file on his computer he sees the date formats set to DATE and not CUSTOM. Is this possible?
Can a cell set to CUSTOM FORMAT appear differently on a different version of MS OFFICE?
Does the Operating System also have a role to play in this?
For example if we've typed our data in OFFICE 2007 on a system with XP as the OS, will it not open as CUSTOM when we open it in OFFICE 2010 with Windows 7 as the OS?
We need serious help on this as this confusion has put our project in jeopardy.

Thanks for the help Jim. Just to make it clearer we haven't used quotation marks in the date formats. Further, we were told to use back slash by the client cause according to them this would help in keeping the date formats as fixed to custom format on any
computer that the file is opened on.
What I'm trying to figure out is that if a cell is set to a custom format, can it appear differently when opened on a different computer?
We've sent the file using Sendspace.com to our clients and when we download the file and open it on any version of MS Office we still see the custom formats in the date fileds. However, the client insists that it appears differently on their computers.
Is it possible for a cell set to a custom format to not appear as custom on a different computer?
Just to remind you again that we've downloaded the file on almost every version of Office and have noticed no change in the formats set by our team. How then is it possible that the dates doesn't appear as custom formats on their system?
I would really appreciate if you could help me solve this situation.

  • .PDF Attachments in "Mail" appear differently.

I am using Mac OS 10.7.4 (Lion) on a new iMac.  My old computer, a G5 PowerMac, just bit the dust after many years of great service.  I was using Entourage as my mail server, but it is no longer supported.  So i'm getting acquainted with Apple's "Mail".
Now, when I attach pdf files to my outgoing mail, the attached documents will appear sometimes as in miniature as standard "PDF Adobe" icons and other times they will appear as larger pict of the first page of the document.  I would prefer to eliminate this larger 'first page' look and keep the files showing up as PDF Adobe icons.
How can I remove this display of attachments in the larger size 'first page' view?  Any help or advise would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Thank you, Linc.  I have followed your advise and downloaded Tinker Tool and changed the preferences as suggested.  I haven't tested it yet, though.  If it doesn't solve my problem, I'll so advise.  If it does, I'll be hitting the "This solved my question" button.
Still getting acquainted with Lion.  I'm sure I'll have more questions.

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

  • Unable to set default compose mail font in Apple Mail

So, I've gone through all the preferences and set them to the correct font (Folio STD-Light). When I compose a new message it uses Folio STD-Medium. "Medium" is not set in any of my font preferences in the Mail > Preferences pane. Where is it pulling this font from? Is it in a hidden plist file somewhere?
The only way I can get the correct font, is to set it each time in the "fonts" button each time I write an email. That gets old quickly.
    Any help?

If you are trying to determine the fonts seen by your recipients, there is no way to do that using Mail > Preferences. It must be done for each outgoing individually in the New Message pane. Or you can use custom stationery.
Of course it only makes sense to select a special font for your emails when you know for sure that the recipient also has it on their machine.
If the ability to set a default font to be seen by recipients is really important, I recommend switching to Entourage or Thunderbird.

  • Save to RTF + appearance of fonts other than in mail window

Discussion seems to go round and round on this subject without getting a clear reason for why something which worked fine in Tiger in now broken in Leopard. Clearly I am not unique in needing to save eMails to RTF(D) for filing in context with other work documents, it makes good sense to see a chronology of correspondence in the same place. In Tiger I would batch file on a daily basis and save messages for particular projects in their own files. This worked flawlessly, such that I could go back to the RTF or RTFD file and review the message, with attachments and often with the attachments in context in the document. Now, in Leopard, I cannot save the attachment with the message, despite the option being offered by Apple and the appropriate box being ticked. Furthermore, all the mails which are created in in Arial or Helvetica are saved in these rtf files as Times 16 (which happens to be the default setting in Safari preferences - is this a coincidence...?). This is what people get the other end when I send them messages. It is completely contrary to our business image to have messages turn up in this huge alien font which has no bearing on the style of the practice image. I would like Apple to acknowledge that this is indeed broken and is going to be fixed please. This has been going on a long time and a fix is overdue. Drew

Have you tried changing the default font setting in Safari to test this?

They are never going to tell you whether or when anything is going to be changed in Mail or any other app. So if it's a big problem, and if no one here can offer a possible fix or work-around, you may need to consider using something else. Thunderbird and Entourage and most common alternatives.

  • HT3376 I have a Yahoo plus account. When I set up the mail account the Bulk Mail (Trash), Deleted Messages,Draft,Drafts,Junk, and Sent Folders all appear on my iPhone. Is there a way to prevent this?

I have a Yahoo Account. When I set up the mail account the  Bulk Mail, Deleted Messages, Draft, Drafts, Junk, Sent, and Sent Messages appear on all of my iPhones, my PC, my Macbook and any other wifi product that receives mail. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these duplicate mailbox folders??
    Thanks

I just called apple care to even know how to respond to this answer. I am very old and this was my first post ever. I appreciate you taking the time to give me an answer. I also ask them how to delete this account because every time I log in it wants me to change my password and I have run out of passwords. I don't even know what it means when it ask me the community I want to be in.
The only thing I know about syncing is syncing my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. I apologize that I am so technically stupid. Does mail have syncing???
Thank you even if I never figure out how to get back to this site again.

  • Mail and Asian fonts set-how to reset...

I am attempting to remote support a client using Apple Mail. He has a Mac Book Air/Lion (not sure if 10.7.4 yet) but my email to him is getting interpted as Asian character set.
I'm thiking of looking within Mail/Preference/Fonts and Colors but the larger issue is what precipitated this in the first place. Shoudl I be looking elsewhere.
Body of the text is Asian font set but the email address and other particualrs from him and me are English.
Should I look at keyboard preferences as well?
    Looking for guidance.
    Many thanks to all...

He uses Mail/iCloud with an ATT DSL system. I have my own domain using IMAP as well as a .me account using Mail.app.
Waiting to hear when I can remote login to look at things.
Another thought is to backup his mailbox, rebuild, and then do a big purge of his inbox. His work pattern is such that he leaves way too much in his inbox (4K+ messages). I've counseled him to change. If the system is getting corrupted maybe this is a symptom?
Also not sure if he is at 10.7.4-I'm not going there yet due to some nasty issues with the Thunderboldt upgrade released last week.
    Thanks

  • Default font set in mail and ... can't change it

My default font is currently set to Times in Mail, I have no clue why it was updated after installing Maverics, other computers have it set to Helvetica in my office.
The bigger problem is none of us can change our default font ... or font in general from any menu, font selector etc in Mail!!!!
Is anyone having this same problem? Any solutions?

    I have resolved this problem...
    Root of the problem.
    - Maverics installed dupicates of all of my system fonts creating conflicts.
    Solution.
    - In Font Book App and resolve all the conflicts.

  • Setting up e-mail where the address is different f...

I want to set up my Nokia 5800 XPressMusic (vodafone-branded, firmware 40.0.005.428.02) to be able to send and receive e-mail from my university account. The problem is that my uni (UCL) 'outsource' the e-mail service to Microsoft Outlook, and I think this is causing the problems.
I have already successfully set up a mailbox from my personal Google Mail.
However, when using the e-mail wizard to create a new mailbox, I cannot get further than entering my e-mail address.
I enter it in the format [email protected] (not my real one!), then the phone shows something like "detecting settings". Now, where the setup of my Google Mail asked me for my password, instead I get asked the following question:
"What type of email do you want to set up?
    * Internet (POP/IMAP)
    o Mail for exchange"
(I select the bullet next to Internet (POP/IMAP), as I wish to use IMAP.)
However, when I press Next, I just get returned to the Messaging screen (New message / Inbox / googlemail.com / Sent... etc.)
Therefore how do I go about setting up my university e-mail account? Is there a way to manually enter all the details?
    (I have them available at:
Setting up live@UCL e-mail in Thunderbird)

With e-mail servers like that is is best to ask your teacher or the admin of the server

  • HTML signature appears different in email body

I attached an HTML signature in the Thunderbird preferences but it appears different when I send an email to myself. I understand that formatting can change between different email clients but I assumed it would appear the same in Thunderbird mail as it does in the settings. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Thanks for your response! The signature was created in Word and is basic with no graphics. I exported the file from Word as HTML then used the select HTML file option for signature in Thunderbird settings. I also have copy and pasted the raw code. Either way it looks correct in the preview in settings but the font doesn't stay when I send an email to myself and receive within Thunderbird. Perhaps the preview will show any HTML correctly even if Thunderbird can't receive it that way? Thanks again!
