Fonts to repair 10.6.7 bug

Hello
Apple just released an updater which deliver fonts to repair the bug introduced by 10.6.7.
As you see, they didn't wait for 10.6.8.
Update available thru Software update or thru :
http://support.apple.com/downloads/

I was fooled by the updater title.
It doesn't deliver new fonts, it's supposed to kill the bugs introduced by 10.6.7 in the treatment of some fonts.
I wished to pass the info quickly because I know tart the fonts problems were really annoying.

• PDF in Safari: Fonts not displaying correctly: Has this bug been fixed?

Last year I was trying to view a PDF on the iPad with Safari, and there was a font corruption problem: On zooming in, the type would become garbled. Now granted, I was using a non-standard font (Univers Type 1). I also noticed this problem with certain magazines in the MagCloud app. I decided to work around the problem by converting my type to outlines; while this worked, it made the PDFs much larger in file size.
I checked this bug again under iOS 4.3 and could not replicate it. I've found anecdotal evidence out there that as of iOS 4.2.1 this may have been fixed, but I can't find confirmation. Any help in this regard is much appreciated. I need to present my project managers with discrete evidence that this bug has been fixed before they'll allow me to go ahead with "live" type -- and as we all know, the plural of anecdote is not data. Thanks.

Apologies, I should also make clear another key point...where it's blowing out (multiple places), I'm using apex_item within the SQL to render the form. So that's where the problem lies

• Font size bug in iOS 7.0.4 mail app?

Hi,
I experience a strange behaviour with iOS 7 mail app. When I try to read a plaintext mail with the iPhone in portrait orientation the font size is oddly big. I can "zoom" in with a two finger pinch but I cannot zoom out to decrease the font size.
Is this a bug, a setting I activated somewhere, a silly feature?
Thanks for advice,

Yes, the time and date is correct. It just started happening a few days ago and has bene like this since. I cant even open the mail, because theirs no content in them. Nor can i delete it.

• Missing fonts in iWork documents

My iWork apps keep giving me missing font document warnings when I launch Pages, Keynote and Numbers documents. This is a problem already reported by many other iWork users but I haven't found a satisfactory solution and I'm hoping someone here can help.
When launching an existing Pages document, I get this document warning:
Here's what I see in the Font Chooser. Helvetica has got some new variants like '.Light Oblique'. What the??
But if I quit Pages and then create a new document, I don't get any warnings. The Font Chooser also behaves as usual:
I've validated my fonts, deleted the font cache, repaired permissions in an attempt to fix the problem with no success. What should I do?

I'd like to add perhaps a slightly different perspective to this problem. I'm a graphic designer and use Insider Software's FontAgent Pro to manage all of the fonts on my machine. I use Font Book only to manage the few system fonts that are necessary to run the OS.
I keep the number of activated fonts to a minimum and regularly clean out the font caches to prevent any problems with all of the design apps that I use. I've done this for years and haven't experienced any font-related problems for a long, long time.
When I want to use Helvetica/Neue Helvetica (which is rarely), I use PostScript Type 1 versions of those fonts. I don't want to reinstall the dfont version of Helvetica, because that will create conflicts with the fonts in my commercial work.
Whenever I open or create an iWork document I get the Missing Font error mentioned in this thread. The new version of iWork lets me select a substitute font, but my choice never seems to "stick." Once I close the document and reopen it, the same message reappears. iWork seems to assume that every document must use the dfont version of Helvetica/Helvetica Neue, regardless of what I want.
Why can't I specify what font I'd like to use, and have it become the default for all of the iWork apps? Until Apple fixes this problem the whole suite will have to remain shelfware and I'll keep using Office. I'd prefer to use iWork, but at least Office doesn't insist on nagging me about my font choices.

• Oracle XML parser and IBM jdk bug

Hello,
From a few messages found in the XML forum it seems that IBM jvm could cause problems with oracle XML parser. ( see http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum11/HTML/003823.html )
I am using IBM jvm (jdk 1.3) on a linux box, and problems are starting to arise:
I have
- 1 BC4J based jsp app which works fine.
- 2 XML parsing BC4J apps which cause strange errors (like parsing 40 documents fine and failing on the 41st for no apparent reason)
Hopefully, Steven Muench provided precious advice on this (basically, disabling the JIT), however some issues are still open:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>You should file a bug with IBM to get this fixed, using your stylesheet as a testcase. Lots of people have hit this problem.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Has anyone (from oracle or else) done this yet? I have gone (quickly) through IBM website but I didn't find any bug report utility or the like...
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Disable your JIT compiler (or switch JVM's) and you won't have the error.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Turning off the JIT indeed made the errors vanish, thanks a lot for the tip!
I have a few more questions though :
* As the BC4J framework uses the xml parser, It is fairly possible that the ibm jvm bug will affect it...
I haven't had any problems (yet?) with the BC4J part of my applications, but I'm a bit concerned about having random bugs lurking around (I have more than enough of my own :) )
Has anyone stumbled upon IBM JVM vs oracle parser issues in BC4J? (oracle.xml.parser.v2.XXXXXX exceptions...)
* If BC4J is indeed affected, what's the solution?
- Disable the JIT? (And forget about performance?... hmmm... no)
- Switch parsers? (oracle parser is too tightly integrated in the BC4J Framework isn't it?.. hmm... not possible either)
- Wait for a patch from IBM (and use another one in the meantime) / switch JVM :
In either case, I'd really like to know what is the JVM that oracle people use / would advise.
Thanks for your help
null

For those interested,
last week i reported this bug in the ibm jvm news forum.
They said that the problem had been investigated and would be fixed in their next service release.
FYI: the current release (SR7, labeled "build cx130-20010329) still has various problems wih oracle XML parser.

• Web browsers always use aliased fonts if possible

This is screwy, folks. I needed to install xorg-fonts-100dpi and xorg-fonts-75dpi in order to get KWord working properly, and now Konqueror is *always* using 75dpi fonts for *everything* on *all* web pages, even though my font configuration (the default!) looks like this:
Standard font: Bitstream Vera Sans
Fixed font: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono
Serif font: Bitstream Vera Serif
Sans serif font: Bitstream Vera Sans
Cursive tont: Bitstream Vera Sans
Fantasy font: Bitstream Vera Sans
Now, whatever bloody fonts Konqueror is using now, they look aliased and generally hideous and sure as hell are not Bitstream fonts! :x Could someone please help me sort this out?
Edit: here's a screenshot...

Ugly or what?

I dont think this is a bug at all......
From what it looks like... Konqueror is doing the correct thing.
font,th,td,p { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif }
Those are the fonts specified to be used throughout the CSS of the site.
Load this up and see what you get. (yes its a hideous non standard mix of xhtml and html4 as well as using dirty <font> tags instead of css. shoot me.)
<html>
<body>
<font face="Verdana">Verdana. Is this aliased?</font><br />
<font face="Helvetica">Helvetica. Is this aliased?</font><br />
<font face="Arial">Arial. This is always aliased.</font><br />
</body>
</html>
My system doesnt seem to have Verdana and Arial, so I get a generic sans font for them. But it does have helvetica.
Konqueror is correctly noting that the system doesnt have verdana, and falling back to arial, which I also don't seem to have, and finally falling back to Helvetica, which by nature is an aliased font.
Your specified sans-serif font is only used when all three of the web page's specified fonts are unavailable.
So no bug on konqeror's behalf. It's behaving correctly. Maybe its that the primary listed fonts are incorrectly installed, not installed, or for some unforseen reason, unusable by kde.
AFAIK, Arial and Verdana are MS fonts, so installing webcore (ttf-ms-fonts) and restarting KDE/X ought to fix this problem.
iphitus
edit: and as expected, installing ttf-ms-fonts fixed it. you might need to wait a while for kde to pick em up though, or restart kde.

• What can I do to fix the Home, Files and Fonts tabs in the CC app?

Each of the aforementioned tabs shows a blue spinner forever upon selecting it. I've been accepted into the prerelease program for Files and Fonts, so I'd understand a bug there, but it seems like Home should be displaying.
I've done everything described here:
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/unknown-server-error-launchin g-cc.html
Nothing worked.
OS 10.8.4
CC 1.1.2.232

Andy if you have tried the steps listed in "Unknown Server Error" when you attempt to log in to Adobe Creative Cloud - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/unknown-server-error-launching-cc.html then I would recommend creating a new local administrator account to see if the behavior consists.  This will help determine if the file permissions have been compromised under your current user account.

• Hi, when typing an email the font on the first line is different then the second, can you help fix this

Hi, when typing an email the font on the first line is different then the second, can you help fix this

I can offer suggestions, but I can not fix it.
Press enter three or four times before you start typing and then move the cursor back to the start. What happens is your point of insertion gets outside your predefined font range, it is a know bug and that will help you "stay in the lines" Another option is type Rick, go back to the start and then type your message. Anything which keeps the insertion point from the very end of the email really.

• How do I fix a volume if  Disk utility says cannot be repaired?

Greetings all,
Am having some annoying issues with my PowerMac G5 hard drive, nothing very specific, just lots of small issues like crashes and hangs and the fan going into hyper-drive every now and then. Started up from my system disc/Disk Utility and ran repair permissions and repair disc.
On repair disk it gets to the end then says:
1 HFS volume repaired
1 volume could not be repaired
I cannot find out what this means so can anyone advise?
I also run repair permissions over and over and it never stops finding something to repair.
Any advice much appreciated.

Started up from my system disc/Disk Utility and ran repair permissions and repair disc.
Do you mean the System install DVD? - that's what you should do as you cannot repair an HD you're booted from.
On repair disk it gets to the end then says:
1 HFS volume repaired
1 volume could not be repaired
This is a little odd: is there another hard disk connected? Or possibly it was trying to repair the install disk as well?
I also run repair permissions over and over and it never stops finding something to repair.
Repairing permissions does thrown up a lot of things which can't be repaired: this is a bug arising from a system update and is harmless: you can ignore it.
You could try downloading Applejack which you run in single-user mode and provides an easy way of using the built-in disk repair procedure: this is quicker than starting from the DVD and you won't get any confusion with the DVD. It's quite safe: it doesn't do the check itself, just invokes the repair that you would get by typing arcane Linux codes. But note that you must run it only in single user mode (starting up and holding command-s while booting), never while booted normally.

• Google Web Fonts breaking select boxes?

Google Web Fonts seems to be causing a bug in the newest version of Safari. Clicking on a select box is causing every window open to reload, and often making the browser crash. Removing the link to Google Web Fonts solves the problem. Any ideas?

So, the actual Google Web Fonts page is working properly which makes me think that there's another javascript library or something that we might be using that is causing the crash. Either that, or google web fonts is using a fancy select box....

• Textfield font sizing and metrics is broken in the Chrome beta (32.0.1671.3 beta-m Aura)

When using device fonts in the latest Chrome on beta channel (32.0.1671.3 beta-m Aura) the metrics are often way off the expected values. This causes Textfields that are auto sized to size incorrectly. The most frequent bug is that the text height is measured as 0, although sometimes very large values are returned. The bug does not happen for every font, or at every size or style, _sans seems to be immune.
This bug does not occur in the release version of Chrome, or in any other browser/player version.
I made a quick example here:
http://betterstatistics.org/bugs/chrome/flash/fonts/as3.html
I filed a bug:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=308632
If this goes into the release version of Chrome it will cause major problems on many projects that I have worked on, and I suspect many others.
We estimate that Chrome 32 will be released on Nov 7.
Is there a work around?

Dominique,
Thank you for the detailed problem description. Although you posted it some ten hours ago I have just now finished reading it.
Form pages must be built so they can operate correctly when inline validation errors are displayed. The assumption (by the engine) is that session state (and package state) as it exists at the point the validations are performed is sufficient (and correct) to support the redisplay of the page without the need to fire on-load processes or computations. Session state or package state changes made by after-submit computations or after-submit/before computations/validations processes that prevent correct page behavior on the "validation redisplay" must be avoided.
The condition types Inline Validation Errors Displayed/No Inline Validation Errors Displayed can be used for on-load events/controls (processes, computations, regions, items, ...) for which you need finer control over this behavior.
Also, you can forgo the use of after-submit computations when the resulting alteration of session state would be inimical to proper "validation redisplay" behavior and use On Submit - After Computations and Validations processes instead.
I hope I have understood your situation and that this answer adequately answers your questions.

• Virus / Spyware?  Tiny bug crawling on screen

I've got what looks like a tiny bug randomly crawling around my screen. After researching a bit - I thought it might be a real but - but it's not. I know this because when the hard drive is being accessed and the computer's at work - the "bug" stops moving, or slows down, then speeds up again.
My kids have recently started using my computer - so I'm not sure if they opened up an attachment or not. The computer has been running a bit slower lately - so I'm concerned there's some spyware or a virus on the machine.
Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks -
Dan

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for "bug" in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Check any DashBoard Widgets installed.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

• Transfering old documents and the helvetica bug

Is there any way of avoiding the helvetica bug when transfering old documents?
I have thousands of documents created on an I book power PC G 3, 500 MHz, OS 10.3 and AW 6.2.9. These have chicago script and when transfered to mac book 1.83 GHz, OS10.4 and AW 6.2.9, they now have helvetica text which I find difficult on the eye. It would a pain to individually change them to another text. There does not appear to be chicago text on the macbook. The AW on the I book was upgraded from clarisworks to the latest version but the AW on the macbook was a new version out of the box, then upgraded to 6.2.9.
I aplogise in advance because I think this is question may already be answered but I couldn't find it in discussions.
Eamonn Lim

Hi Eamonn,
I think the key line in your post is this one:
"There does not appear to be chicago text on the macbook."
If that;s the case, then what you're seeing may be font substitution, rather than the Helvetica bug. This could be good news or bad.
If you still have your iBook G3, you may be able to transfer the Chicago font from it to your MacBook. If that's possible, If the MacBook recognizes the font, and If it's not the Helvetica bug, just having the font avbailable should cure the problem.
The bad news? If any of the three conditions above aren't true, you may be stuck with changing them individually.
Even the bad news isn't all bad though, if are set entirely in Chicago. You'll only need to change each document once, and won't need to change it at all until the first time you open it.
Open the document, press command-A to Select All, choose the new font, click anywhere to deselect, then Save the document. Then carry on with reading the document.
If it IS the dreaded Helvetica bug, a search of the forum on "helvetica" will bring up instructions on solving.
And I suspect it's possible to do a batch change of the documents' fonts using an AppleScript, if the 'do as needed' approach doesn't fit your needs.
Regards,
Barry
