Fooled By Randomness

Besides being the title of a very good book on investing, this topic describes what just happened to me when I decided to do a teaching moment with my daughter in law.
For his high school graduation, she had some pictures taken of her son by a "professional" in a nature setting, and she also took a couple. She sent us a wallet size of the "pro" picture, and when we went to the graduation she gave us a 6x4 and an 8x10 of her version. She mentioned that she didn't want to spend money for pro pictures any more, and I told her that hers were better anyway. Oddly, they both used a Canon Rebel. I don't know if a Rebel shoots RAW, but that is immaterial to this story. My DIL said that the lady who took the pro picture had a better lens and a reflector , and sure, there was fill light on the kid's face. The pose and composition were ok. My DIL's picture had the kid's face in a light half shadow, but I told her there's nothing wrong with that, it's Impressionist.
Thje colors in both prints were approximately the same, nothing to moan about.
The first thing I noticed about the wallet size "pro" picture was blown out highlights, and the histogram showed it. Then it seemed soft also, so I checked it out in Topaz InFocus and found out that it was low res. Nothing worked but sharpen and microcontrast. I'm not sure what the "pro" did to make the wallet size but it was only about thumbnail quality, a little over 100 dpi at 3x2 and jpeg. So I said, what the hey, I'll let PS do its thing and used the autotone, autocontrast and autocolor. I dropped the highlights in Levels a couple of numbers too.  I had scanned it in my calibrated Vuescan and blew it up  2x to match the DIL version. I printed it from Preview for a quick check and it came out bright, a bit unsat, and with a yellowish cast. WTF. I set it aside for a day, and went to work on her version. All I did was scan it in Vuescan and Epson  to print it from Preview for a rough check. Prints looked identical to screen (calibrated). I looked again at the other one to see if I was nuts. Nope. Waited another day and printed the pro ver from Preview again. This time it matched the screen. WTF WTF.
After letting this swirl around in my brain for a day, I realized that the most likely reason was that the light cyan nozzle had been clogged on the first set.

Interesting chain of events there Lundberg, but I think you'll find the "low rez" wallet version was a deliberate decision by the "Pro" to stop - average! - people doing exactly what you did!
You wanna larger version to hang on the wall or frame for your desk... you pay my friend, you pay!

  • All Open Applications Quitting Unexpectedly and Randomly

It started last night after I finally allowed App Store to install a bunch of OS X updates that it had wanted to install for quite some time. I'm not 100% sure but I believe one of those updates was for OS X 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 but I may be mistaken and had installed that a bit ago. I do know that among the group of updates was a thunderboldt firmware update, some printer drivers, security updates, etc.
Anyways, this has to be by far the most frustrating issue I have ever experienced on a machine. Basically, I'll just be working on my computer whether it be in Chrome on one of my many tabs or in Evernote writing a note or in any other app and then bam, out of nowhere every single running up on my machine, even those not shown in the dock and only in the status bar will just vanish and quit, without notice or popups. The only app that remains will be Finder (TotalFinder will be killed) and, very randomly, a few of the status bar apps may survive the mutiny. Whatever I have open and was in the middle of working on will be gone. I can't even begin to explain how downright frustrating this is. It has already happened 3 times in a period of 24 hours and I have absolutely no clue what is going on. Before I ran the updates late last night, I hadn't rebooted my machine for 2-3 weeks and I've most certainly never ever experienced any issues remotely related to this.
When reviewing the logs in Console around the time of each occurence, there'll be a flood of errors but I cannot identify the root cause of the issue and am left without any leads after hours and hours of searching the web for other users who might be experiencing this exact behavior. Anything I find that might seem related tends to be just one app that's crashing and just isn't quite what I'm experiencing. Might I add that I am not notified, prompted, or anything when the apps close. Literally, one second I have a bunch of apps running and I'm cruising along and the next, nothing but Finder and a few survivors (they probably were able to recover and restart themselves) in the status bar.
This problem is blowing my mind and it has me about ready to reformat and start from scratch except for the fact that I just don't have the time to set everything back up again right now. I cannot get my work done under these circumstances though.
Here are some details on my hardware configuration:
I upgraded my ram to 16gb from a very reputable brand long ago when I first bought the high-resolution late 2011 15" MacBook Pro and have never had issues. I do not believe the hardware has anything to do with this issue anyways...
500GB Samsung Flash drive with about 70GB free right now. Upgraded that from the stock 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive many months ago and, again, have never had issues until I installed updates last night.
I'd greatly appreciate any insight or help on this. I am a software developer and have spent over 6 hours trying to find an answer and diagnose this issue already. I am at a complete and utter loss at this point. I've repaired permissions, cleared caches, verified fonts, rebooted multiple times after making some system changes, etc... all to no avail. I am stumped, fooled, dumbfounded, and, quite frankly, REALLY ****** off at this machine right now. Hopefully some genius can come along and save the day here.
Below is a dump of the Console's logged events from the most recent occurance. Maybe you'll be able to pickup a trail from this information. Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide to possibly help diagnose and fix this.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide here.

Hey Clinton, thanks for such a speed reply!
The Console logs sure do seem useless. They definitely haven't helped me track anything down for squat but, as you suspected, I have no kernal panics to pull logs from. I did notice, however, one particular app that was leaving a User Diagnostic Report / crash log at the same time each occurance happened. The reports are for SRServiceAgent, which is part of Splashtop Streamer.app. Maybe these logs might reveal something? If you think so, I can share the output as well. I've looked through them but I must say, they're near giberish to me

I'll try giving a reinstall of 10.8.4 via the combo updater a shot and see if that helps. I've been using the machine without another episode for about an hour now but that really doesn't mean anything since I have no frigin idea what's causing this and if anything I may have adjusted would have even fixed it or not. It's kinda an only time will tell thing right now.
See anything that raises any flags in the output above? The Splashtop kext is for the same app I mentioned above that left a crash log. It's an app that allows me to remote in using my iPhone or iPad but I don't believe I even had it actively running when I whitnessed the lovely disappearing act. Of course, that doesn't mean things weren't still running in the background of course.
On that note, I ought to wipe VirtualBox. I've been using VMWare instead lately and I've actually already uninstalled the VirtualBox app itself. I'll see if I can find a writeup on how to properly remove its kernel extensions... long shot in terms of a solution to my issue but hey.
Btw, is it possible to look into exactly what and when system updates were installed? I'd like to confirm whether I actually did install 10.8.4 the first night or if it already had been. At the very least, it would help me isolate some details behind what's causing this cause this certainly didn't happen before those updates I installed the first night.
    Thanks again!

  • Randomly appearing/disappearing images

I have two images on a page that will randomly appear and
disappear when the page is refreshed. Sometimes both appear at the
same time, but with subsequent refreshing of the page one of them
will disappear, then it might reappear while the other one
disappears, then both will come back, etc. As far as I can tell it
    truly is random.
I've gone over the code very methodically looking for any
anomalies, and there's nothing obvious to me. It occurs in both IE
and FF. This is the first web page I've built using Dreamweaver's
layout mode to create tables, so that may or may not be a factor.
But it's time to ask for help, because I really am stumped at this
    point.
I would be more grateful than I can express for any tips
anyone can offer. You can view the code here:
    http://stressfreewebsites.com/temp2/ex-a/temp2-a.html
The two rogue images are the header bars in the main text.
I have to laugh myself at the irony of the website's theme:
building 'stress-free' websites for small businesses. Stress-free
for the end user perhaps, but only because all the stress is on my
    end, lol.

    > This is the first
    > web page I've built using Dreamweaver's layout mode to
    create tables
We are all hoping it's the last, too.
In my opinion, there are three serious problems with Layout
    Mode -
    1. Perhaps most importantly, it sits between you and *real*
    HTML tables,
and fools you into believing that concepts like "layout cell"
    and
"autostretch" really mean something. They do not. As long as
    you use
Layout Mode, you'll never learn one of the most important
    things for new web
developers - how to build solid and reliable tables.
    2. Actually, #1 wouldn't be *so* bad, except that the code
    that is written
by Layout Mode is really poor code. For example, a layout
    table contains
MANY empty rows of cells. This can contribute to a table's
    instability.
In addition, if your initial positioning of the table's cells
    is a bit
    complex,
Layout Mode will throw in col- and rowspans aplenty as it
    merges and splits
cells willy-nillly to achieve the pixel-perfect layout you
    have specified.
    Again,
this is an extremely poor method for building stable tables,
    because it
    allows
changes in one tiny cell's shape (i.e, dimensions) to ripple
    through the
    rest
of the table, usually with unexpected and sometimes
    disastrous consequences.
This is one of the primary reasons for the final result's
    fragility - read
    this -
    http://apptools.com/rants/spans.php
    3. The UI for Layout Mode is beyond confusing - many options
    that you might
want to use are inaccessible, e.g., inserting another table,
    or layer onto
    the page.
I can understand the new user's desire to use this tool to
    make their life
    easier,
but the cost is just too heavy in my opinion.
To make good tables, keep it simple. Put a table on the page,
    and begin to
load your content. If you would want a different table
    layout, instead of
merging or splitting cells, consider stacking tables or
    nesting simple
    tables instead, respectively.
And above all, do not try to build the whole page with a
    single table!
Luckily, Adobe understands the problems created for the
    unsuspecting user
who falls into this trap, and has elected to remove this
    feature altogether
from the next version of DW. The time is right for you to
    begin working
    with tables properly!
To read more about this approach, visit the DW FAQ link in my
    sig, and run
    through the table tutorials.
I was not able to duplicate your image behavior after many
    refreshes in both
    IE7 and FF2x.

  • Random JVM crashes during serialization

After implementing Java serialization (JDK1.4.0-b92/Win2KPro/SP4) on fairly complex objects, I am getting frequent JVM crashes. These occur randomly (when serializing, when deserializing, during unrelated GUI operations after deserializing, etc.) and are not reproducible. Entries in the DrWatson error log (see below) appear to tag the function JVM_FindSignal as the culprit, but this doesn't get me any closer to a solution.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I appear to have the exact same problem with the same JDK, however it only occurs at a customer site. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on a machine I can fool around with yet.
The call stack I get is identical to the one you posted. My application is also using serialization so that could indeed be a factor. My application is a batch process without any user interface.
If you find a solution please let me know. At the moment my problem has only occurred on multi-processor machines (one had 2, the other 4 processors), so this may also be a factor.
Can you tell me how many processors you are using and if your application uses threading? This may help me narrow things down a bit.

  • How can I manage the sequence of photos viewed on the Apple TV via i Tunes Home Share?  The photos in my directory are sequenced, they display in random order in the slide show.

I am accessing a directory of photos on my network, using Home Share within iTunes.  The photos are displayed in random sequence, which is not helpful for an organized slide show.   Any ideas on sequencing the photos?

Actually it appears that the sequence is likely by date/time.   Filename is DEFINITELY NOT the sequence.  I am trying to create a slideshow in iPhoto, fool the date problem by changing all dates to today, and sequencing by filename.  A very cumbersome process to an illogical problem, does not make sense to me at all.
    Thanks for trying to help.

  • Why does the App Store open randomly when I'm using Safari?

It simply opens the apps store to some game unprompted. It does it without me touching links. It happens without touching anything.
And yes I have hard reset it and deleted cookies etc. I am not a fool.
I have seen this question come up a lot and Apple have failed to acknowledge it. It's certainly common enough to be a known problem, so why are they ignoring it?

This is happening because of bad ads on a site that you are visiting. These ads are designed to randomly redirect mobile device users to other sites or the App Store if the link is to an App. It has nothing to do with your iPad. The random nature of the re-directs is intended to confuse the user and keep this garbage below the radar.
Turning OFF Javascript bypasses this problem because the mechanism implementing the redirects uses Javascript. This is not really a solution, however, because turning Off Javascript affects all sites and will certainly cause problems.
Complain to the web site to get these ads removed. They may be unaware of the problem.
There is no problem with your iPad.

  • ITunes re-points media to random files and locations

I'm having issues where every so often, iTunes will randomly re-point media to other locations on my network.     For example:
    Before - Show1.m4v points to /Volumes/mp3/iTunes%20Server/TV%20Shows/Series/Season%201/Show1.m4v
After - Show1.m4v randomly now points to /Volumes/media/mp3s/Artist/AlbumX/Song3.mp3
This happens on both my personal machine and a Mac Mini I have set up as a media server.    Mostly they are obvious because you look in iTunes and the cover art is missing.   The harder ones are when one show re-points to another in a series and you simply cannot see that its happened until you go to play the show and it starts to play some other random one.    (e.g. I want to watch Game of Thrones Season 4 episode 2, and it starts to play Breaking Bad season 1 show 5)
I have moved my iTunes library to a Synology NAS location on the network so it isn't local.  I understand there are some issues with this in the past.
My questions:  Is this normal?  Why does iTunes feel it needs to randomly re-point to media thats all over the place?    This isn't corruption, its almost like a virus or malware.
Is there an easy fix?  Because its actually pointing to an existing file, I can't click on the broken link and have it "re-find" the media file.     I could delete the target, but would have to fish for hundreds if not thousands of them.    If I rename the target directory, iTunes is smart enough to track the re-name so I can't fool it into thinking the file is missing.     I could completely delete it in iTunes and re-import, but it would create a second copy in the media folder filling up my disk.
In the case of music, I can simply delete all the local files and have iTunes match re-download... always fun with over 15k music files.
In the case of my media server, I have to fix it all manually.   This last go-around I'm looking at having to fix nearly 100 broken links for movies and TV shows.

I simply don't get the value of a locally attached drive
    An iTunes library that works?
About a movie/TV show match.  Legally speaking it is serves no purpose.  It is illegal in the USA and many other countries to rip DVDs.  Unless you are transferring original Petticoat Junction episodes from VHS tape you cannot legally be in possession of unprotected, matchable digital copies of a large amount of the media most people would likely wish to have available (at least I don't know of anybody who sells unprotected, digital, mass-market videos).  Yes, you can buy digital download versions but then many of those sources provide for re-download and or streaming (as does AppleTV) which negates the need for a Match service. I guess you could say, "Well Amazon [or somebody] sells digital videos, why doesn't Apple provide a Match service for those so I can stream to my AppleTV?"  I will let you think that one through and answer it yourself. On the other side of things, music can be legally ripped from CD so there's still a lot of that out there which the Match subscription serves.

  • Random bluetooth connection notifications when mouse is out of reach

My MB Pro randomly shows 'connected' and 'connection lost' notifications (as if the mighty mouse I use at work is getting (un)connected) when my mighty mouse is out of reach. The MB does this whenever it wakes up and shows both notification messages alternately for about 7 or 8 times. Also, when I look at the bluetooth settings in System Preferences, sometimes it says that the mighty mouse is connected, while it is not even in the room.

Maybe best to start fresh and factory reset your band and unpair from your phone and restart the whole pairing

  • K8N SLI Platinum random boot behavior

Been almost 5 years since I've fooled around with my old Athlon sys which has been passed on to my younger bro to put it to a good use, and about 4 years since i last posted here
Unfortunately I got a call yesterday to check the comp, since apparently it's not booting up.
I cannot for the life of me figure our what's the deal with it since I cannot reproduce the same issue and I have limited replacement hardware for testing each part.
    Now onto the symptoms:
    - when the system posts, at the part where the IDE devices are listed, the post stops after the last device is displayed. no irq/dmi table afterwards, no OS boot.
When I looked closely, the HDD names (or manufacturer codes) that are listed in the IDE device list, were wrong. The post lists them as WD140s while both of them are WD160s. Sometimes when the system hangs up, a different HDD name is displayed at post. Whenever the HDD names are displayed correctly, the system boots without any issues.
What I have tried till now:
    - tested both HDDs in an external enclosure on another computer, they both work OK.
    - I have changed the IDE cable, same results as before: sometimes works sometimes doesn't
    - RAM is OK
    - CPU is OK
    - GPU is OK
    - i have tried with different combinations of HDDs and DVD attached, same random post
    - the only time the system post consistently is when no HDD, but only the DVD-writer is attached
    Hit me with ideas guys.

Okey, down to basics, but I'm too lazy to type myself.
This is POST (Power On Self Test):
The first thing that the BIOS does when it boots the PC is to perform what is called the Power-On Self-Test, or POST for short. The POST is a built-in diagnostic program that checks your hardware to ensure that everything is present and functioning properly, before the BIOS begins the actual boot. It later continues with additional tests (such as the memory test that you see printed on the screen) as the boot process is proceeding.
The POST runs very quickly, and you will normally not even noticed that it is happening--unless it finds a problem (amazing how many things are like that, isn't it?) You may have encountered a PC that, when turned on, made beeping sounds and then stopped without booting up. That is the POST telling you something is wrong with the machine. The speaker is used because this test happens so early on, that the video isn't even activated yet! These beep patterns can be used to diagnose many hardware problems with your PC. The exact patterns depend on the maker of the BIOS; the most common are Award and AMI BIOSes. This part of the Troubleshooting Expert will help you figure out what the POST beep codes mean and what to do about them, if you are having this problem.
Note: Some POST errors are considered "fatal" while others are not. A fatal error means that it will halt the boot process immediately (an example would be if no system memory at all is found). In fact, most POST boot errors are fatal, since the POST is testing vital system components.
Many people don't realize that the POST also uses extended troubleshooting codes that you can use to get much more detail on what problem a troublesome PC is having. You can purchase a special debugging card that goes into an ISA slot and accepts the debugging codes that the BIOS sends to a special I/O address, usually 80h. The card displays these codes and this lets you see where the POST stops, if it finds a problem. These cards are obviously only for the serious PC repairperson or someone who does a lot of work on systems.
This is the complete Boot sequence, including POST:
The internal power supply turns on and initializes. The power supply takes some time until it can generate reliable power for the rest of the computer, and having it turn on prematurely could potentially lead to damage. Therefore, the chipset will generate a reset signal to the processor (the same as if you held the reset button down for a while on your case) until it receives the Power Good signal from the power supply.
When the reset button is released, the processor will be ready to start executing. When the processor first starts up, it is suffering from amnesia; there is nothing at all in the memory to execute. Of course processor makers know this will happen, so they pre-program the processor to always look at the same place in the system BIOS ROM for the start of the BIOS boot program. This is normally location FFFF0h, right at the end of the system memory. They put it there so that the size of the ROM can be changed without creating compatibility problems. Since there are only 16 bytes left from there to the end of conventional memory, this location just contains a "jump" instruction telling the processor where to go to find the real BIOS startup program.
The BIOS performs the power-on self test (POST). If there are any fatal errors, the boot process stops. POST beep codes can be found in this area of the Troubleshooting Expert.
The BIOS looks for the video card. In particular, it looks for the video card's built in BIOS program and runs it. This BIOS is normally found at location C000h in memory. The system BIOS executes the video card BIOS, which initializes the video card. Most modern cards will display information on the screen about the video card. (This is why on a modern PC you usually see something on the screen about the video card before you see the messages from the system BIOS itself).
The BIOS then looks for other devices' ROMs to see if any of them have BIOSes. Normally, the IDE/ATA hard disk BIOS will be found at C8000h and executed. If any other device BIOSes are found, they are executed as well.
The BIOS displays its startup screen.
The BIOS does more tests on the system, including the memory count-up test which you see on the screen. The BIOS will generally display a text error message on the screen if it encounters an error at this point; these error messages and their explanations can be found in this part of the Troubleshooting Expert.
The BIOS performs a "system inventory" of sorts, doing more tests to determine what sort of hardware is in the system. Modern BIOSes have many automatic settings and will determine memory timing (for example) based on what kind of memory it finds. Many BIOSes can also dynamically set hard drive parameters and access modes, and will determine these at roughly this time. Some will display a message on the screen for each drive they detect and configure this way. The BIOS will also now search for and label logical devices (COM and LPT ports).
If the BIOS supports the Plug and Play standard, it will detect and configure Plug and Play devices at this time and display a message on the screen for each one it finds. See here for more details on how PnP detects devices and assigns resources.
The BIOS will display a summary screen about your system's configuration. Checking this page of data can be helpful in diagnosing setup problems, although it can be hard to see because sometimes it flashes on the screen very quickly before scrolling off the top.
The BIOS begins the search for a drive to boot from. Most modern BIOSes contain a setting that controls if the system should first try to boot from the floppy disk (A:) or first try the hard disk (C:). Some BIOSes will even let you boot from your CD-ROM drive or other devices, depending on the boot sequence BIOS setting.
Having identified its target boot drive, the BIOS looks for boot information to start the operating system boot process. If it is searching a hard disk, it looks for a master boot record at cylinder 0, head 0, sector 1 (the first sector on the disk); if it is searching a floppy disk, it looks at the same address on the floppy disk for a volume boot sector.
If it finds what it is looking for, the BIOS starts the process of booting the operating system, using the information in the boot sector. At this point, the code in the boot sector takes over from the BIOS. The DOS boot process is described in detail here. If the first device that the system tries (floppy, hard disk, etc.) is not found, the BIOS will then try the next device in the boot sequence, and continue until it finds a bootable device.
If no boot device at all can be found, the system will normally display an error message and then freeze up the system. What the error message is depends entirely on the BIOS, and can be anything from the rather clear "No boot device available" to the very cryptic "NO ROM BASIC - SYSTEM HALTED". This will also happen if you have a bootable hard disk partition but forget to set it active.
This process is called a "cold boot" (since the machine was off, or cold, when it started). A "warm boot" is the same thing except it occurs when the machine is rebooted using {Ctrl}+{Alt}+{Delete} or similar. In this case the POST is skipped and the boot process continues roughly at step 8 above.

  • Ipod Randomly Pausing Songs

    hi all,
Just before i went on holiday i bought the isound 2.1 sound dock system, and also updated my ipod touch to 1.1.5 update
Since then, my ipod randomly pauses songs, regardless of the screen being on / off, the lock feature being on / off, using the dock speakers, 3.5 jack speakers, or earphones
im really hoping its down to a firmware issue but i have no idea.
    Any suggestions?

The iPod will pause if you pull the earbud jack out - this is a feature. Unfortunately sometimes a set of earbuds will have a jack this is just a bit loose and this will fool the iPod into pausing. Try using a different pair of buds. If the problem continues with a different set of earbuds, give Apple a call.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Randomly Shut Down and Is completely Unresponsive

    HELP!
My phone has just randomly shut down. And is completely unresponsive.
I have put it on charge for a good 3/4 hours and the red light is not coming on, nothing happens when I try to turn on the phone either!!
    PLEASE HELP ME

Try performing a system repair as this will often fix issues - This will factory reset your phone
Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the onscreen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP
If that fails then you need to either return your device to the place of purchase or contact Xperia care http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:
In reply to some questions posted by other members (thank you by the way).
I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!

  • Email randomly not sending, no error message, Email GONE

    Hello,
This has happened multiple times, seemingly at random, and it is EXTREMELY frustrating.
I will compose my email, hit send, I get the 'whoosh' sound, little spinning wheel next to the Wifi/LTE logo, etc., and... nothing. The email never arrives, it's not in my sent folder, it's like it never existed. It's just GONE. The only way I can tell if a message has sent or not is to go check my sent folder every time. I had some pretty important emails get eaten like this before I even figured out it was happening, which I'm sure you can imagine did nothing good for my reputation.
It has happened with big emails and small emails, emails sent from several different accounts, and it seems to happen about 30% of the time. I can't figure out any pattern to it. I'm watching the wheel turn now after 15 minutes of waiting for a 2MB message to send (4 photos at "large" compression and 2 medium paragraphs of text), so it seems like it's trying to send, but I don't see a drafts or outbox folder anywhere. My Wifi connection is fine and other apps on my phone are loading data quickly and easily.
I just quit Mail and the email is officially gone. No more spinning wheel, nothing in any of my sent folders (I checked them all).
The fact that it works sometimes and not others seems to suggest my settings are correct. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried removing the mail account and adding it back? Is this the only email account you have on the device?

  • Macbook Air 2012: intermittent, random freezes of trackpad and keyboard lasting a few seconds each

There have been a few other people to have reported this problem, but there has been no consistent solution for me on my Macbook Air 13" 2012, running 10.8.4.
What happens is this: while typing, the built-in keyboard and trackpad will suddenly lock up at the same time, randomly, intermittently, and for just a few seconds before returning to normal. This has been true through all the updates of 10.8.x since I bought the system last year.
During the freeze, one of the three behaviors occurs:
    1) both keyboard and trackpad are completely unresponsive
    2) both keyboard and trackpad get really slow, with high latency. Keys pressed show up much later or have to be pressed several times before registering. Trackpad is jumpy if it moves at all.
    3) key gets stuck, sometimes the BACKSPACE key, which usually results in several dozen emails getting deleted or entire paragraphs, or rows and rows of the same stuck key. Pressing other keys does nothing.
I've spoken online with various other people who have the same problem and confirmed that the built-in keyboard and trackpad seem to be joined together whenever this problem strikes. You never see one freeze without the other also freezing.
Also, these commonly-recommended solutions don't work:
    a) Reset PRAM. Done this many times. Does nothing.
    b) Bring it in to Apple. Did this too. They replaced the keyboard and trackpad but the problem remains.
    c) Clearing caches in safe mode. No improvement.
    d) Removing "com.google.keystone.deamon.plist" and "com.google.keystone.agent.plist" doesn't seem to work either, even though the errors and behavior are exactly the same for me as for george.e.gonzalez in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19702976#19702976
These files do come back, though, thanks to Google Software Update. The keystone software appears to be part of Google Chrome, although I cannot confirm this.
    e) I DO have Google Android File Transfer installed like one other person reported; they said uninstalling it fixed the problem. Unfortunately, that has not worked for me. Also, Android File Transfer is installed (same version 1.0.50.2266, same Mac OS 10.8.4) on an older 2008 Macbook, and it works fine, which points to something on just this Macbook Air as being the cause.
    f) I don't use the Radio Silence firewall app--can't remove it.
    g) I don't have the telldus device or whatever it is, so I don't have the "com.telldus.service.plist" to remove.
    h) Completely clearing out /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, and /Library/StartupItems doesn't do anything.
    i) Repairing permissions or repairing the volume does nothing.
    j) Reinstalling the OS fresh does nothing.
    k) I don't have an external trackpad, mouse, or keyboard for testing while the freezing happens, but the machine itself seems to be working, just not the built-in input devices, which are on the same USB bus.
    l) Pressing ESC does not stop the key stuck situation, as it does for some people.
It feels to me like a hardware problem, not an OS problem, and it feels like a USB bus issue. I have noticed that when I insert USB flash drives, I get the same lock-up for a few seconds, something which my other Macs don't do.
I've also noticed various USB errors in the Console around the same time (same as george.e.gonzalez):
    7/26/13 1:20:04.000 AM kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
    7/26/13 1:20:05.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:          844075.636          AppleUSBEHCI[0xffffff80157f1000]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0x1a, timing out! (Addr: 2, EP: 0)
But I'm not able to precisely correlate these errors to the pause.
Is anybody else having this problem that can shed more light on it than these other suggested repairs? This has been frustrating for quite a while, but I've had the stuck BACKSPACE key delete hundreds of emails on a webmail platform that I was unable to recover using Undo and out of the trash, and that's just no longer tolerable...
Thank you, thank you, thank you, if anyone can help me fix this!

    Hi, Dan--
Nope, none of those four... I do have Dropbox but never installed it on this machine. The other three are services I've never signed up for.
I am basically using these apps up-front:
Mail.app, Safari, Notes, Terminal, maybe LibreOffice 4.0.x, maybe Sublime Text 2, Console.
And the freezes happen about twice a day, usually when I'm in Mail or Terminal, but that's because those are the ones where I'm typing the most and can see immediately when the freezes happen. It could be happening even more frequently while I'm browsing, but I might not know it because I'm merely reading what's on the screen.
This is a list from Activity Monitor of what I'm using right now, which is very typical of what I use all day:
