Foot Pedal Transcribing on Lion

Hello,
I have mp3 lectures that I'd like to transcribe word for word. I have been using Quicktime on my desktop but it has been tedious stopping and rewinding and playing again... moving back and forth from QT to my text software.
Does anybody have any firsthand experience of using a foot pedal + some software on Lion to do this?
I have looked into several petals but many of them require Windows to initially set things up. And the software that I could find were only for PowerPC Macs and not 10.7 compaitible. What combo (pedal and software) combo would you recommend?
All I need is a function that will allow me to back up 5 seconds or so, pause, then repeat as necessary. After all, I only want this to transcribe some lectures.
Any insight greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hey Lisa--
Use ExpressScribe!  It's free and is the most robust transcription software I've come across (no affiliation).  It does what you require it to do, and a lot more; try the keyboard shortcuts, for example, instead of spending $ on a footpedal.  The paid version allows you to do video.

  • Transcription software with foot pedal control

Anybody know if Olympus DSS Transcription machine will work on Leopard? I do medical transcription and use the Olympus AS-3000 transcription kit with foot pedal. It is working fine with Tiger but I just got a new 24 inch IMac with Leopard ready to install and I want to make sure it will work.... any ideas? I need to be able to use the foot pedal when transcribing downloaded DSS files. Thanks

Thanks, Matt. The show controller I had seen but its too expensive I'm afraid. The Vpedal looks great. Just 2 simple questions if you don't mind.
Does it work with OSX 10.5 ? The site says up to 10.4.
I know it says it works with iTunes but I don't understand the itunes plugin info on their site. The only option seems to be Pause back time. I understand this to mean that it causes the file to rewind a certain amount when you lift your foot off the pedal. How would this work with playing songs? I wouldn't want to have to keep my foot on the pedal all the time. I was hoping for a 1 click starts file, next click stops it kind of solution.

  • Transcription software and foot pedal

Will be transcribing mp3 audio files into a Word document. Going back and forth between iTunes and Word is very tiring. I need software and a foot pedal so that I can control the audio without having to go in and out of the two applications. Recommendations please?

  • Is this the right forum for this? Using a foot pedal to control apps?

My girlfriend is doing medical transcription - she listens to audio and she types. People who do this, often use a footpedal to play, pause, rewind, etc. while transcribing. I'm hoping to set her up on the Mac to do this, there are pedals which are Mac compatible, but I don't know what their limitations are, or what is possible.
I found some typical USB pedals, examples here:
    http://www.altoedge.com/pedals/
...and I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck using them? Can they be configured to control certain menu functions in any application? such as using the keyboard shortcuts in the System Preferences to control certain commands in other applications? I'm thinking that I could make great use of a pedal like this to control any audio player - iTunes, Garage Band, or a 3rd party app I bought and love, "The Amazing Slow-Downer" so that I can use this to practice with the guitar, playing along with recordings, similar to how she would do the exact same thing while listening to recordings and typing.
I hope this is the right forum to bring this up. I don't have the pedal, I'm thinking of getting one, but I was hoping to get input from someone before springing for one. Thanks!!

Well, this took me a while to get solved, but it is indeed solved.
I tried USB Overdrive and it could, and perhaps should work, but apparently it will not. When adding a device, it seems that USB Overdrive is not set up to handle any input device that does not register itself as either a Mouse or a Joystick. The VEC USB Footpedal that I'm using is "Device type: Other".
So, I went for Quickeys. And Quickeys can do it all. It did recognize the device, I was able to assign it to the scope of the particular audio playback app I wanted to use (Amazing Slow Downer OS X - which is truly amazing. Any musicians reading this who are looking for a way to learn pieces by ear, this does it better than anything else I've seen yet).
I created a shortcut in Quickeys for the ASD app; added the middle button of the foot pedal as the trigger; set one step, entering 'space bar' as the step (which toggles playback, similar to many audio players).
    It all worked.
Quickeys is very confusing and seemingly featured with an endless array of options. Enter at your own risk. Ask me for help. This was the only way to get it done that I could find. I did write to the author of USB Overdrive asking him to please support additional devices as I did find some traction from gamers who like to use a foot pedal in addition to other input devices. There was a Windows-only management utility for the foot pedal that was intended for custom input, assigning the buttons to any keyboard input or mouse click event. It would be nice to have a simple and easy to use utility like this. But, Quickeys did do the job.
Thanks for your help, you guys!!!

  • A Foot Each In Leopard & Lion - 1st few problems :

    A Foot Each In Leopard & Lion - 1st few problems :
When my late `06 iMac went basically kaput, I went to booting off an external clone of it's entire 600+ gb's from an `06 MacBook . . .
( never knew so much beach-ball and force quits were possible ! )
Dear friends in Austin bought and just sent me a used 2009 21.5" on 10.7.5 ( 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo / 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM ) . .  and it has 487.01 free out of 499.25 GB.
I'm not diving head-first into Lion ( it seems I've heard more problematic tales on that OS then others, maybe ? ), so until I figure out how to enjoy my 600+ GBs on a "new" 499 GB, I'm booting the "new" one off the same external with everything amassed up thru now.
I indeed get confused about which HD is "in charge" . . .
    Leopard's on the external, but it's being processed thru Lion, kind'a ? . . . right ?!
That would suggest many things need to be reconciled :
I first noticed Quicktime Pro couldn't play mp4s of 1080 movie burns.
    Audio plays . .  picture's black !
    That was my first question.
    Then, a simple Control/Shift/3 screen-shot came out completely scrambled . .  everytime !
    Then things got deeper !!
A simple "oh good, iTunes isn't detecting my iPod . .  let's try a restart" resulted in the infamous "your computer needs to be restarted, please hold the power button for several seconds . . ." descending kernel panic screen !!
More attempts got lesser results, up to no gearwheel at all on unchanging gray screen. . .  till I let it be awhile and got back to the kernel screen.
12 hours later it just let me boot to the internal HD with Lion.
But I felt a run of Disk Warrior was still in order . .
    I get :
"DiskWarrior cannot currently be run from this disk because Mac OS X ignores ownership of some disks by default . . ."
it suggest an approach which ends with :
    3) Click the "Sharing & permissions" triangle
    4) Uncheck "Ignore ownership on this volume"
This becomes a ring of Catch 22 till my head hurts !!
Right now, I can't even find an icon of the volume for Get Info, but when I saw it yesterday, it said under "Sharing & permissions" that I have "custom access' !?
When I spoke to the wife of the wonderful couple who sent me this, she said she had indeed entered my name as admin, but there was "no password".
Well Finder sure seems to know about & want one !!
How do accomplish any changes without knowing what it is ???
It's a wee bit difficult to know what my questions actually are when this confused halfway thru the looking glass . . .
And no, outside of the 2009 iMac, & a wireless mouse and keyboard not recognized when booted to Leopard, there was no Install Disc sent.

    Alright, . . .
I feel for anybody try'na sort thru my nonsense here, so let me eliminate things that have "improved" :
The "new" Mac calmed down, became bootable. And once Spotlight finished 90 minutes on indexing the prime external I was able to boot from it again. ( It's where all my apps are afterall, and a terrain I don't have to learn for days to use yet )
On 1st restart option, the external didn't show, but that cleared-up, and I ran Disk Warrior

I have a Yamaha FC7 foot pedal and am trying to use it as a whammy bar type controller.  Can I do this with anything in Mainstage?  I also have Line 6 Pod farm 2 - anything in there?
The foot pedal also seems to have an on/off switch that activates when it's depressed all the way.  How do I set that up in Mainstage?  Can I cycle between and effect and a volume pedal, for example?
    Mainstage version is 2.1.3

You can use a keyboard or other controller (with jack like sustain) and then assign controller (normally 64) to what you want Mainstage to do.
This is unlikely to work if you plug an "Expression Pedal" such as an FC7 into a "Sustain Pedal" socket using MIDI CC64, which usually operates as a switch rather than a continuously variable value.
If I understood the OP's request correctly, the OP wanted to use the FC7 as a "Whammy Pedal", which does a PitchBend 'dive' effect (amongst other things)

whats a good mac to use for a home flight simulator with flight controls and foot pedals?
My old 6100 AV worked great on A10 ATTACK, back in 1993.
whats a good set up now a days?
I havent seen any MAC set ups as a lot of the after market accessories are on  Windows platform.
Is there a way or should I get a dedicated simulator on PC?

The fact that USB flight input devices appear to Windows only is not a limitation; for Mac most are programmed through the sim itself. I know X-Plane does that.
I've simmed a lot and know that good sims need a lot of processor and video hardware horsepower, and you'll also need a lot of RAM. They also run up the internal temps. A Mac Pro has better cooling than an iMac. You can get a program like SMCFanControl to manually set up the fans speeds before starting the sim.
I know of no sims today that will still run on a PowerPC Mac (2005 and earlier) so you need to look to an Intel Mac with top specs. If looking at iMacs, start by looking for the quad-core i7 processor. Those models usually came with an up-rated video card. Thing 12 to 16GB RAM.
My 2010 iMac has the 2.93gHz i7 processor, video hardware (ATI 5750) with 1TB VRAM, and 12 GB of RAM. It runs the x-Plane 10 demo fine but I've not bought the full version because v10 seems to make foot pedals darned near mandatory, and I don't want $100 worth of pedals under my regular work desk at the moment.

  • Control with a foot pedal the amount of signal ?

I would like to control with a foot pedal, the amount of signal that goes to an effect bus. Thus using the pedal to increase/decrease the amount of effect. Anyone know how to do that?

mooblie I would expect he does since two of the external HD showup/work but a third does not.

  • GarageBand - Controller's Foot Pedal (in AUSampler) works for one track but not for another

I am learning how to use AUSampler in GarageBand. I am using a MIDI controller (Alesis Q88) with a foot pedal for the sustain.
The sustain works with the default sound in AUSampler (Sine 440), but not for a sound that I imported. Also, my imported sound plays longer the lower the keys played, and the higher up the keys the faster it plays. Either way, it doesn't allow sustain, but yet the default sound does.
I know where the Controller / Sustain Pedal area is within the Piano Roll but that doesn't fix my dilemma.
I presume my problem is related to the viola sound I imported (wav format), or the way I need to set something up; I hope the latter.
    Any clues?
    Many thanks in advance.

    HI Bob,
You can test your settings by clicking the big "Test My DNS" button at <https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc/services/dnsentropy>. If you see "Poor" on any of the tests, don't use that domain name server! Remove it from Apple Menu => System Preferences =>Network =>DNS Servers or similar location in your router if you've got a 'home network'. If all you have is "poor" DNS servers in your list, call your ISP and insist that they give you the address of a name server which is protected against the recently exposed DNS cache-poisoning threat.
Also, open System Preferences/Network. Click the DNS tab. Add these numbers in the DNS Servers box.

  • I need a USB adapter for my dictaphone transcription foot pedal for the ipad mini

I have recently purchased, for work purposes, an olympus as-2400 professional transcription kit for an oral history project.  It comes with a USB foot pedal and i was hoping to be able to use this on my ipad mini.  Does anyone have any ideas about USB adapters with which this item would work? Many thanks!

You can buy a usb camera adapter at the Apple Store but my bet is that it won't work And you will be wasting your money. There are a number of good affordable tablets on the market that come with usb hubs.  I'm not knocking Apple, I have an air for personal use, but they have their own niche and are not very flexible when it comes to adding on options other then those they sell or have license to.  I suggest you call the software vender and confirm before going any further with this.  Personally when I'm at work I leave the Ipad at home and bring my asus transformer. It has usb and HDMI ports for much less money, around $200 And runs Windows 8. If your are open minded there is room in the world for both and both shine in different areas.

  • Foot pedal with Mainstage

I am new to mainstage and am using it to trigger the playing of drum and bass backing tracks. I want to use a foot pedal to trigger this. Is this pedal an USB pedal? Could someone recommend a foot pedal? I don't need a lot of controls just a simple pedal. Thank you.

    I wish.
There is a shortage of usb pedals.
'sposed to be some coming out soon.
One called... um, I can't remember exactly. Something french with "II" (It's either the pi symbol or roman 2, it's unclear and very hard to google) in the name.
there is the "midi solutions" route, a box that converts expression pedal info to midi. google it.
there are a bunch of non-music related usb foot controller devices that might work for you.

  • Using foot pedal for ios music app?

    Hi there,
this is my question: I´m a bassplayer and I need to support our band with more atmospheric sounds, like piano, strings, pads... Thus I thought of using a foot pedal to trigger a suitable app within my ipad 2. And I probably need a kind of chord memorizer like the one in Logic Pro or any likewise technique. Hope I could describe it a bit better than it sounds to me :-)
What foot pedal could be suitable for this? What app can support this? I´m quite experienced with those apps but didn´t find the best. Maybe due to the lack of the pedal...
Thanks in advance for ANY idea and a happy new year!!

Clicked reply by accident, and now can't edit the post.
Has anyone else seen the same problem?
These are books from CDs or librivox recordings, linked into one or a few multiple-hour files with Join Together.  I have never bought an audiobook from iTunes so don't know if those are handled better.

  • Foot pedal switch for rendering

Would it be possible to rig up a foot pedal switch for rendering? I do a lot of effecrs and layers. I just calcluated it would be easier to step on a switch than hit option R. Or whatever. Can this be rigged?
    Chris

As you can remap the keyboard, why not simply remap the render to be a single keypress rather than opt-R.
If you can find a usb footswitch that generates a map able keypress signal, you could use that, but seriously - what X said.
