Footage appears corrupted in Final Cut Pro X

I recently had a drive fail but I had all of my events and projects backed up. I recovered them and ever since all of my footage appears corrupted when I paly it in the viewer in FCPX. There is multiple colours generally in the highlight and shadow areas all over the image.
All footage plays back fine in quicktime so it seems to be a problem with my FCPX event.
It looks alot like the highlight/shadow overlay in Aperture but I can't see any way to turn it off.
Is it a bug of a feature I haven't learned about yet?
I have tried creating new events and importing different footage but I still get this colour overlay in the viewer and on the clips in the event browser.
I haven't tried a clean install of the software yet.
Thanks in advance.

Tom,
Thank you for your swift response.
Since my post I did some searching and discovered this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3379619?start=0&tstart=0 which had that very solution.
I tried it since and it solved my problem.
Thanks again.

  • New Canon EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro

Just thought your would like to know. From canonrumors.com
    http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/04/canon-updates-e1-plugin-for-fcp/
Canon today announces the latest update for EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro – the company’s custom-developed software application that provides quicker and easier editing of EOS Movie footage in Apple’s Final Cut Pro software suite.
Launching to coincide with the start of the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will make the importing of EOS Movie files even easier, allowing users to transfer files from any folder, without needing to mirror the folder structure on the camera itself.
The update also enables smoother importing from Canon’s EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV models, allowing users to import footage without requiring the THM file generated by the camera.
Originally launched in February 2010, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro is designed to quickly and seamlessly convert EOS Movie footage from Canon’s leading range of EOS DSLR cameras to Apple’s high-quality ProRes 422 codec. The plug-in allows users to convert footage at approximately twice the speed of Apple’s standard conversion, creating a smoother workflow for the rapidly growing number of videographers shooting HD video content on DSLR cameras.
EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will be available to download for free from 25th April 2011.

And I just spent over an hour yesterday explaining to a client how utterly essential it was to maintain the exact folder structure for proper log & transfer:/
If I say that once a day to students, I say it a thousand times.
On top of that I just started Carbon Copy Clone today with all my updates in my editing lab. Not the end of the world but it's a little time consuming on 80 stations. Oh well.

  • How to set up Final Cut Pro, Pro Res and H.264 project

Before I dive into this edit, I want to be sure it will all be compatible.  Here's what I have:
Pro Res HQ422 footag,  imported it into Final Cut Pro.  I also have H.264 footage imported into Final Cut Pro. Will it be possible to mix the H.264 footage on the ProRes timeline?  The ProRes footage was shot on a Canon 7d Mk II with an Atomos Ninja Star.  I have another batch of footage I'd like to use shot on a Canon 6d (full frame) that imports in as H.264.  This project will also use stills in the edit.
    Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
    thanks
    JR

Many of us will tell you it's no big deal to mix your media codecs. Your modern Macintosh can handle the job. Mostly.
Myself, I use workflows that carry over from ye olden days. I transcode everything to my planned release codec before beginning to edit and the timeline is the release medium's codec. In this case, I'd be moving everything to ProRes422 (not HQ) because you can't really gain anything by converting your DSLRs' MPEG4 to ProResHQ. I have really good reasons for this step but my reasons probably are not valid to anyone else.
Whatever advice you receive here, you must design and conduct some useful tests to determine if said advice is any good for your workflow and machine's specs. Know what your release medium is going to be; how high does the editing, rendering, and sharing quality need to be before you hit the ceiling?

  • I recently acquired Final Cut Pro and my concern is that when attempting to download old footage from cine or standard 8, that is 4:9 aspect. There does not appear to be a way of instructing F C Pro to automatically convert images to 16:9 ratio?

Mac Book Pro version (10.6.i) Snow Leopard.
I am an inexperience user and recently acquired Final Cut Pro to supplement my Imove application.
My question is - How can I instruct F C Pro to automatically convert 4:9 aspect material (old cine and standard 8 recordings) to 16:9 aspect.
At the moment I am adjusting each clip manually to fit 16:9, not a very good way to proceed! I have no problem with Imovie in this respect and wonder if
F C Pro offers the same facillity? Can not find any clues either from Apple store or elsewhere.

You mean 14:9, right?? 8mm film frame aspect ratio is  1.58. I find it hard to believe that your telecined video has the same aspect as the original film unless it has been explicitly trimmed to those dimensions. If that's the case, it's pillarboxed in the 16:9 format or letterboxed in the 4:3 format.
You could try to select all your clips and in the Video Inspector > Spatial Conform, select Fill. This will cause your clips to expand to fill the 16:9 "space". This also means that portions of the edges will "overflow" the boundaries of the modern frame (most likely the top and bottom edges.) It shouldn't be that much and if you're telecined film is letterboxed in 4:3, it will be a lot less so afterwards!
You can also select all your clips, assuming they are all the same dimensions, and adjust the (Video > Transform > ) Scale in "one throw" (if you turn down the disclosure triangle you can adjust width and height independently—I am assuming that since you want it to fit, you don't mind minor stretching.)

  • Final cut pro x corruption after combining events

    Hi,
I installed the trial of Final Cut Pro X 2 days ago to determine if it will work properly for me.  It seems that I am getting sporadic corruption when merging events, which may turn out to be a show stopper.
I am doing small merges - 2-3 events with 2-3 short clips.  In general it has been fine, except yesterday I got 2 clips correped during a merge, a crash of the app which corrupted a day, and just today 5 clips from a single merge got corrupted.
Note I using the FCPX event libray and dragging/dropping to move clips around.
Any ideas of why this may be happening and whether this is a known issue?
iMac 2.8 dual core, 4G, plenty if disk (260G free)
all of the latest OS patches as well as the latest FCPX.
Nothing else significant has been running concurrently.
If there are any missing details, please do let me know.
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Hey Andy,
Thanks for the response.  To start I am a complete newbie to FCPX and have had very limited exp in iMovie. The importing was terribly slow for iMovie and I never got around to actually editing.  I have a pretty lenghty response below so as to provide details.
    Workflow:
    1)  I had done an import of files from an archives as well as my iMovie directory (as I had some clips which were missed from my orginal import into iMovie).  For iMovie, I had really just been building an collection of videos which were very disorganized.   I had lots of events which were date1_1, date1_2, date1_3, date_2, date_3... So checking out FCPX, I figured I would group clips mostly by an event of MONTH YR, except where there was an actual event such as a birthday.
This really cleaned up my events.  As a next step, I plan to further review and break out additional events.
    2) workflow going forward (current plan anyhow) - please do let me know if you have a different recommendation
now - import new footage -> either put it into the generic MONTH YR event, or put into a new appropriately labeled grouping ->  some time in the future actually do something with all of this video I have taken.
On a side note, it appears that I did not have corruption, but clips that had to be re-linked. I just did a re-import from iMovie or the camera archive and that seemed to do the trick.  I understand, in the future I just need to re-link
    Codec:
I have the optimized video selected, however, it was just taking too long on my computer so I had stopped the transcode on several occasions..
    Location:
all on my primary drive - 4T 7200
    Memory:
The cpu seems to be the bottleneck - uses 150% of my dual-core.  The memory seemed to be okay, but I have ordered a 4G ram chip to replace one of my 2G to bring me to 6G.
I did have a crash during an import at some point and not sure about the impact on any files, so I have DELETED MY FCPX Events and am performing a new re-import.  I will not lose anything significant as I had only been reorganzing the video.  I do clearly have a     I have updated the prefs to only optimize.  The other options I will do adhoc.
After an import from iMovie, I will be importing from my 3 camera archives since not everything is in iMovie...so this will mean dupes.  I know that FCPX will prevent dupes from a particular source, but now we are talking about 3 sources which will have duplicates.  Any recommendations here?
    Thanks,
    Gary

  • Is it possible to transfer stored (b-roll) video footage from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro event library? Is so, what do I need?

I have been editing in final cut express and now that I'm working in Pro X I would like to transfer my b-roll footage from FCX to Pro X. I read that there is an app. that you can buy that does this for Final Cut Pro 7, is this possible with Final Cut Express?

Any media used in FCE can be used in FCP. No third party software is required.
You cannot take an FCE project to FCP. 7toX will not help as FCE has no XML export.

  • I have been using Final Cut pro v6 without any problems but recently had to reinstall.  Since then I can't open and view all my Quicktime clips.  They appear white in timeline which means you can hear audio but not view picture.  Any tips?

I have been using Final Cut Pro without any problems - v6 - for ages.  I recently had a hardware issue and had to reinstall the software.  Since then I can't open most of my QT clips in my fcp project.  They appear as white clips - audio only no pictures.  There are a few QT clips you can view as regular thumbnail images and they play ok.  What's the issue?  I have fcp v6.0.6 and QT v7.  Any thoughts on what to do next?

Yes I did software updates which updated fcp to 6.0.6 and QT to version 7.7.  That's as far as updates have taken me although i have requested daily updates.  I forgot to say the clips don't play in QT view either.  Again sound but no pictures when they are played.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • Exporting a JPEG in 4:3 from video footage in Final Cut pro is impossible

I'm trying to export a screen grab from final cut pro as a jpg. It's easy to export a jpg image, but as far as I can tell, it is completely impossible to export it as a 4:3 aspect ratio image. My video footage is all 4:3 but all of the jpg images I try to export come out squished into 16:9. This is driving me crazy!
    Here is what I'm doing . . .
Export >Using Quicktime Conversion >Format (Still Image)
From their I've tried every setting you can imagine and FCP still obstinately refused to allow me to export a jpg image in it's true proportions.
    Please prove me wrong.

Awesome! You rock moblie! Thanks a lot for the info. I was wondering why the image proportions were correct in photoshop (ie. 720x480, I thought those were 4:3 dimensions, but I guess it's just resolution?). I adjusted the image in photoshop to be 720x534 pixels and it looks fine now.
I realize this isn't the smartest question in the world, but why isn't 720x480 a 4:3 aspect ratio? I don't really understand aspect ratio all that well (as you can tell).
    Thanks again!
