Footage becomes distorted

I have a movie that plays fine with quicktime and looks great when brought into FCE 3.5.1. But after I export it and a few other movies edited together using the 'Quicktime Movie' option, a large area becomes distorted for a few seconds. I guess the best way to describe it is that the picture gets a bit wavy. There's a fair amount of movement in this area when this happens. This seems confusing to me as I'm not compressing the video or anything.
Does anybody know why this is happening and what I can do to eliminate it?

Michel-
The file I got was an uncompressed Quicktime .mov file of a TV commercial. It came from the editing house that handled the post production. That file is around 1 gigabyte in size. It's so big, I can't even play it on my machine with Quicktime, which they warned me would happen.
What I did was open the file in Quicktime and then export it using the DV/DVCPRO setting (NTSC). It is this file that has the distortion. Somehow when Quicktime compresses it, it added some distortion. Ugh.
I was able to fix the problem by simply importing the original uncompressed Quicktime .mov file into FCE and then using that. Strangely, the file plays fine once imported into FCE. I'm under the impression that unlike iMovie, FCE does not do any compression or conversion of files when importing.
Now here's the weird thing. When I exported it (along with some other movies) using the compressed version, the resulting Quicktime movie was about 800+ megabytes. Now when I export it using the original uncompressed version, the resulting Quicktime movie is still 800+ megabytes. I'm not using any compression when I export. Shouldn't the new file be much, much larger than the prior version? The compressed file was about 100 megabytes and the uncompressed I'm now using is about 1 gigabyte.
Does FCE employ some compression without me knowing it? Any input or knowledge about this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks/Merci Beaucoup

  • 2007 MacBook Pro Screen becomes distorted and Computer becomes unresponsive

    Hi,
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. This is hard to explain with words alone, but I will try: I'll be using my 2007 MacBook Pro with no problems, when all of a sudden the screen will start to flicker and the display will become distorted where everything seems like it is tapering into seperate small rectangles. If I am playing music through any application (iTunes, Safari, Ableton Live, Adobe Premiere, etc.) the music will continue to play and I can still move the mouse around but I cannot click on anything or stop the music and none of my keyboard brightness or volume commands will function. Basically it's a partial freeze. This is very troubling as it is becoming more and more frequent. I did drop my computer once a year and a half ago but have not had any trouble of this sort (or at all for that matter) until about 2 months ago, so I'm not sure if this is related. It happened to me twice before I upgraded to 10.6.4 from 10.4.11, only then it was more serious and when I rebooted afterwards it would give me that ominous gray screen with the restart logo and several languages saying I needed to shut it down. Now when it happens I can restart my computer just fine (assuming I force shut it down with the power button for 6 seconds), but sometimes when it restarts the weird screen effect I described will happen during start up and then go away once it is running again. If anyone has any idea what is causing this please let me know, this computer is very important to me, as I do 85% of my work on it. Help! Thanks!!!!
    Matt

  • Picture icons becoming distorted

I`ve noticed for a while some of my picture icons in the finder window are becoming unrecognizable. I thought it was just my older scanned images but my newer digital ones are also becoming distorted. What would cause this and how can I resore them? I`ve tried replacing them from iphoto, but that only works for a while then they become distorted again along with new ones. Am I over editing them and thus making them unstable? Any help would be most appreciated.

I`ve figured out how to solve my problem but have no idea as to why the problem exsisted in the first place. For anyone else out there having the same kind of frustration, what I did was open the image in preview and "save as", then without changing anything push the save button and a window came up asking to replace. So I just saved as and replaced. So simple. Everything seems fine now. Fingers crossed.

  • SWF export becomes distorted

Anyone got a solution for the following problem:
    PROBLEM
On exporting the swf / movie or running the test movie
    command - elements become distorted/jagged/blurred
    Almost low quality
    TASK
I want to add a preloader to the movie (which is one scene).
    HOWEVER on either:
    (i) adding a scene before the main scene
    or
(ii) adding frames before the exisitng frames
    DESCRIPTION
The error above occurs whether scene or frames are added.
If i remove the the additional frames or scene everything
goes back to normal on export.
    VERSION
    Flash MX2004
    Please help someone

no idea way that is happening but you can try the following
on the first frame of your movie put this code
    _quality = "BEST";
if that fix the issue you have to consider that this code
will affect the performance of your movie on slow computers
an refering to the preloader i thinks is depends how you are
more confortable, scenes exist to help on organizing the main
    timeline so ...

  • Captured footage is distorted

I captured footage on a DV NTSC ZR30 MC Camcorder in 12 bit rate. Captured footage through firewire using 32 kHz capture rate (equivalent to 12 bit). The captured image is distorted (the digital lines constructing the image are out of sync).
When I first captured the footage and edited it there was no issues. after I rendered, the footage was distorted and after exporting it remained this way. After that the same footage re-captured appears distorted as well.
    Thank you for your time,
    Hazel

Footage from a DVD is already somewhat compressed (MPEG-2), and if you are capturing via S-video, you are playing it out as analog, and then converting it back to DV in FCP (that is, if your capture settings/easy setup is for DV).
What are your capture settings? Did you choose an easy setup before opening a project and capturing? If you do that, the video may look better, but capturing from a DVD never produces great results.
A better way would be to download MPEG StreamClip; this allows you to convert the DVD content (I'm assuming this is not a copyrighted disc) to the DV format that FCP can work with. It still sacrifices some quality, but it's better than trying to capture from the DVD player.

  • What is making my macbook pro crash and causing the screen to become distorted?

I've posted before and thought my problem was solved.  Thanks to the folks who helped.  I'm still having the problem with certain programs causing my screen to split in two and become distorted.  Sometimes I'm able to force quite and others I'm not.  Just a few days ago, I tried to run iPhoto.  The screen did the crazy distorted thing and the computer crashed.  The screen locked up and I had to hard boot it.  Today, I tried to run iPhoto again.  This time I got the error message from Apple and the computer rebooted.  This was the error message I received:

Can anyone please help me.  Thanks.

Reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.

  • Ai PDF becomes distorted when printed from Google Docs

For work, I create price sheets that I save as a PDF and host them on Google docs where other coworkers can access them. When documents are printed from Google Docs, they often become distorted. Sometimes images, such as a logo in the header, will be shifted to the right and bumped down an inch or so. I can usually fix this by rasterizing the objects that are moved. Has anyone else seen this before? An idea as to why this might be happening?

This is really better suited for the Acrobat Windows support forum...
When you repost, be sure to list details of what version(s) of Acrobat or Reader are being used by your client to print on what OS to what type of printer with what version of the driver...because they will ask!

I'm not disagreeing with you - I've found that I am usually more informed about Verizon policies and procedures than some of the reps in our local store.

  • Sound becomes distorted after some time

I use a Creative Fatal1ty HS-1000 USB headset and after playing some time (usually after about 1 to 2 hours) the sound suddenly becomes distorted. It's hard to describe but the sound becomes metallic ,digital, sort of robotic...This is very annoying as it forces me to restart the game and I only play long MP missions online and after restart I'm forced to sit the mission out.! More often then not I continue playing 'deaf', not a solution either! It is solved when I unplug the headset and plug it back in, but then the sound in my game is completely gone!
I have searched a bit and found a post on another forum wich suggested a firmware update, tried that but got the message that newer software was already installed.
    I am looking for one of two solutions;
-A complete fix, whatever this might be...
-A way to get the sound back ingame after unplugging and plugging the headset back in.
    My hardware is;
    Creative Fatal1ty HS-1000 USB headset
    Xtreme Gamer soundcard
    Windows 7 64b Ultimate

Had the same thing, its firmware related issue. Might be also drivers. Update them.
Also, i had this problem when i was at Win7 beta (the very first one). Same drivers and firmware in Vista, worked fine (still works). Make sure u got the right OS drivers.
Thisis really confusing, wich are the correct drivers and firmware? I only found these:

and windows7 ultimate 64 is nowhere mentioned....

  • Why are objects becoming distorted when zoomed in?

Lets say for example that I create a target shape at a relatively large size. I will then shrink it down to a more appropriate size and proceed to zoom in on the object. When I zoom in, the target becomes completely distorted. This is a problem that I came across recently as I have just upgraded from cs4 to cs5.1. Since Illustrator is vector based, objects should be crisp and look the same whether they are scaled to the size of the full artboard or down to just 1% of it, correct?
I have posted a screen shot of the issue that I am running into below. The larger shape on the left is normal, and the shape on the right is that same shape just scaled down. Note: this shape does not have strokes, it is a solid fill. Thanks for any help in advance!

This is what I had originally thought was the issue, so I created a new doument making sure to uncheck the box for the pixel grid. I then dragged the above shape into the new document and the problem persisted. However, when I recreated a similar shape in the new document, there was no distortion (as expected). It seems that for some reason an object created in a document with the pixel grid option turned on keeps those settings when carried into the new document.
Is there a way around this or am I going to have to recreate everything in the new document?
    Thanks for tee response, btw!

  • De-interlaced footage becomes jerky

Tried this question in the quicktime corner, to no avail, sorry for anybody reading it again,
I shoot with a Sony PD150; DV interlaced in PAL. Footage looks smooth but ragged, both in iMovie HD, FCP, QuickTime and when played back on a flatscreen from a DVD.
I tried de-interlacing with FCP (filter and export option) and with Visual Hub. The ragged edges are gone, but camera movements become very jerky. First thought the problem was in the DVD, but it's not. The Quicktime Film, played back on the mac, is jerky too.
    Any suggestions to fix this?
    Thanks,
    KC

Glad to be able to offer a workable solution.
1/25 looks much better. I only used the shutter speed to control the light, when an ND filter wasn't enough and I didn't want to change the iris because of depth of field.
ah. Advanced photography requires advanced tools. You'll need a set of NDs or polariizers to control light that way. The 150 has such tiny sensors, though, you only get a decent depth of field effect at full telephoto and wide open.
Maybe you can help me out with three more questions:
    about the PD150
    1. In the manual set menu auto shutter is -- obviously -- set to 'off'. But is the 'prog. scan' option, in the same menu, any use in getting some sort of progressive footage
The manual for the 150 is available online at many sources if you've lost yours.
http://www.mediacollege.com/ (free download of the PDF)
I have never used the progressive shooting feature, I completely forgot it was there. Now I've got to experiment with it myself. However, shooting 25P is not the same as 50i, you will lose half of your temporal resolution. You want to be able to shoot 50P and then have the choice of converting it to interlaced.
    2. do you know what the 'frame rec' option in the 'camers set' menu does?
Records only a single frame when the start button is pressed. Used for still frame animation projects. Not recommended, the transport does not like to do this. If you need still image recording, use a memory stick.
    3. switching to HD. Any suggestions for an HD camera that's easier to operate than the PD150, has a flawless workflow with the Mac and XLR sound input?
Sorry, can't help you at all. We will not move to HD for at least two or three more years.
The 150/170 has far too few professional controls as it is now. Your desire for depth of field control suggests you need a professional grade camera but you want one with controls that are easily accessed and understood, not fewer of them.
The problem with the 150/170 is the necessary functions are hidden three or more menus deep. They are impossible to change quickly or inconvenient to check during real world photography so I tend to leave them alone.

  • Wide Screen Footage becomes 4:3 after Export

    Hallo
I videotaped footage in the Widescreen Format (16:9) and also set the settings of the project in Premiere that way. The project also displays the footage in widescreen.
But as soon as I export it, it will become 3:4 Format.
What am I doing wrong? I think Windows Media Player and VLC Player should be alright with the widescreen format or is it the exportsettings in Premiere?
    Thanks alot for helping
    Michel from Switzerland

Whoa, whoa whoa. Time out. Stop the bus. There's a LOT of misinformation going on here. First off...
    Jim wrote:
    >The original footage has 1.2 pixels. Coming from the "conversion will always introduce some measure of degradation" camp, they should be left without conversion if at all possible
Keep in mind, Jim, the original poster wrote, "media players such as Quicktime, Real Player, Windows Media Player, VLC Player and Youtube." So we're talking about Adobe Media Encoder. So conversion/rendering is taking place regardless of what pixel aspect he/she chooses.
    Secondly, Brian wrote:
    > Windows Media Player has always recognized the videos I export out at 1.2 aspect ratio as 16x9 format and play then fine.
Brian, this is typically not true for clips exported from Windows Media. (Perhaps you have tweaked some preferences to your Player, or perhaps your video drivers do something to correct this?) Even so, that's a rare instance only to your computer, and is not the proper advice to give.
Try this: export a 16x9 clip or 16x9 timeline via Adobe Media Encoder to a "for download" or streaming Windows Media format. You'll notice the available presets specify all of these types of formats at 1.0 PAR. Try it for any QT or Real Media or H.264 "Youtube" format-- it's all 1.0 PAR.
In addition, to test your theory: I forced the PAR to 1.2 and 1.333 for a few different clips I had. My Windows Media player (version 11) played them all incorrectly. As did Quicktime. Now, I agree that if you had an attached video monitor, it may look okay there. But not when viewing on a computer monitor.
Finally, keep in mind, you're creating a clip for someone else to download. Even if your own computer looks okay with Windows Media, the only way to *guarantee* it will display properly on everyone else's across the globe is to use square 1.0 pixels.

  • Footage becoming grainy when added to Timeline

    Newbie here.
I recently switched cameras from a Sony handycam to a Nikon 5D100.
Looking at the footage in the viewer it's crisp and clear, but when I put it on the timeline it becomes blurry and grainy.
I converted the footage from a .mov to .mp4 thinking FCE didn't like the Nikon 5D100 format, but I'm having this issue with both formats.
    Any suggestions?

The reason the video becomes blurry is that your source media (from the camera) does not match your FCE sequence settings (easy setup).   FCE is designed only for certain video codecs, specifically QuickTime/DV and QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.
When you capture video directly from a camcorder, FCE can ingest DV, AVCHD and HDV video.  DV video is directly imported into QT/DV clips; but in the high-def (AVCHD/HDV) capture process, FCE converts AVCHD and HDV video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec (QT/AIC).
If you don't capture directly from a camcorder you have to make sure your video clips conform to QT/DV or QT/AIC before using them in Final Cut Express.
The D5100 records video as H.264 but it's NOT AVCHD.   You need to convert these clips to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing them into FCE.    Use either MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap to convert the video.
In FCE you need to use one of the AVCHD Easy Setups that matches how you shot the video in your DSLR, for example 1920x1080i30.   (Note that FCE does not support 24fps, and the only mode in which it supports progressive video is 720p)
