Footage captured via Log & Transfer flickers

Hello!
We are using a Sony HDR-XR550 camcorder with the following settings on the camera:
frame size: 1440x1080
video rate: 29.97 fps
compressor: apple ProRes 422
data rate: 14.8-15.1 MB/sec
audio: 48 kHz
pixel aspect HD 1440x1080
field dominance: upper (odd)
I've imported the footage, and on playback it flickers. I've tried changing the sequence presets to match the camera settings, and it still flickers.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Or what the problem could be?
(This is the first time we've used this camera. Usually use a Panasonic HD camera where the settings are 960x720 frame size; 23.98 fps video rate; DVCPRO HD 720p60 compressor; 5.9 MB/sec Data rate; 48kHz audio rate)
Thanks!
-Tracy

However, my issue at this point is that this footage is imported onto the computer's hard drive, and has been erased from the Sony Handycam.
Wait...what? WHAT? Why the HECK did you/they do that? No no no no no no no no no no NO NO! Do you take TAPES that you shoot, capture them, then record over them? Throw them out? Then why do you do this with tapeless media?
You need to watch this tutorial. And EVERYONE THERE needs to watch this tutorial: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
NEVER EVER EVER import from the tapeless media, then erase it. BACKUP! If you did this properly, you wouldn't have to worry about this...just reimport and you'd be fixed. NOW you see one reason why you backup the footage.
Lordy...

  • Cannot capture using log & transfer because warning message

    Hi,
I recently switched cameras - from using a Canon Mini DV ZR 900 to a Panasonic SDR-H85. Of course when I plug in the new camera to the computer via USB, FCE4 doesn't recognize it because it's AVCHD. The media (video clips & stills) is transferred anyway via Adobe Bridge and stored in a designated folder on my hard drive. I then converted the video clips from .MOD to .MOV with MPEG Streamclip. The converted clips are saved in a different folder. I also did the easy set up changing the format to Apple Intermediate Codec and use to AVCHD 1440X1080i60. So then I start a new project and try to do log and transfer but when I try to add the folder containing the converted clips, I get a warning window that says that the folder contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure and to please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can someone please tell me what is wrong or what I'm missing? I need to have a way to identify and organize these clips. Thanks!

Okay, as soon as I get my next check. Judging by your response and what I read on the Apple site, that will solve my problem? I sure hope so. One of the reasons I switched from recording to tape to hard drive is because an Apple Store techie assured me it would be much easier capturing using log and transfer rather than the long drawn out process I was using with tape (making subclips, etc.). So I was pretty upset to encounter this obstacle. I wasn't warned about the perils of AVCHD, and reading the process in your book it didn't seem like it should have been a problem anyway. So I'm still quite confused. But that's okay. I'll be happy enough just to have something working finally! Thanks

  • FCE Keeps Stalling when Importing via Log & Transfer...HELP!

Been using FCE for a while...with my Canon Vixia HF-10. Suddenly, when I try to download my video from the camera via log and transfer, it will download some clips but then I get the beachball of death. It just stalls and even force quit won't stop it.
Anyone have any idea what causes this?

    AVCHD codec of 1920HA
I use a similar camera and yes, 1080p is a no, no at the present.
1080i is a "no worries mate" affair.
The 1920 HA etc. are the differing quality/data rates/duration that the camera can record to.
You can change them via the Menu>Record Setup>Rec Mode.
HA is the highest level for interlaced: around 17 Mbps VBR stepping down to 5 Mbps.
1080p is 28 Mbps by comparison and is way better if displayed on a compatible monitor.
On my wish list is handling of p footage in FCE. Maybe one day!!!

  • .MTS via Log & Transfer - ISSUES

I am creating a project from AVCHD files. I have imported some via L&T directly from different SD cards. Other .MTS files have been given to me as data archives (ie: no AVCHD file structure).
When I open the L&T window and try to transfer the [archived] .MTS files (now residing on one of my external drives), they are grayed out. I assume this is because the file structure that can be read by FCP L&T is not present as it was when I captured from the cards.
So what are my options? Is my only option converting these files with Toast or a similar program?
Your wisdom and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
    cheers!

    Hello,
I'm shooting with a new Panasonic HMC150 onto an SDHC Class 6 card. I'm having the same problem the above user is having even after copying the entire folder structure as it is shown on the SDHC card directly onto my hd. The Log&Transfer still won't read the .mts files. It reads through all the folders until i get to the stream folder containing the light grey .mts files which are un openable
I'm reading about this same problem from other users and can't seem to find any real explanation. Why do I have to buy toast when I'm supposed to be able to transcode to prorez 422 proxy from FCP7 log and transfer? I'm depressed and aggravated at this point and have resorted to heavy alcohol consumption. Any good advice will make me cry fermented tears of joy. Thanks.

  • How to import Canon FS100 footage (.MOD) via Log and Transfer?

I have a Canon FS100 video camera. I records in standard definition 480p video, and saves the files in the .MOD format. Lately, I've just been using iMovie to edit my videos because it can easily import to files. Final Cut Express cannot, though, as far as I'm aware. What I've been doing is copying the files onto my computer, then using a convertor to convert the MOD files into .MOV files, but then FCE has trouble editing it. It causes it to have to render after each edit. Is there an easier way to edit my video? I've tried converting the MOD files into other formats such as DV video, but it still has the rendering problem. My FS100 doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer window of FCE. Is there a way I can make it appear? Thanks.

.mod files are a problem. Are you shooting in 4:3 or 16:9 mode?
What app are you using to convert them ... and what are you converting them to?
The .moi files are index information associated with the .mod files that contain the actual video.
MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert the .mod files. You may need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Componen, if you don't already have it on your Mac. ($20 download from the Apple Store). (You may need to change the .mod file extension to .mpg then open it in MPEG Streamclip.) If you are shooting 4:3 then in MPEG Streamclip convert the videos to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression (this is a selection on the conversion screen).

  • Bringing in 5D mark iii files via Log & Transfer in FCP 7.0.3?

    Hello-
Running FCP 7.0.3 on Duo Quad Core Mac Pro, 10.6 OS.
Just shot some lovely stuff with new 5D mark iii and hoping to use FCP log and transfer tool to bring it in.  (Footage is part of a Canon HDSLR-shot project and have succesfully brought in 5D, 7D, T2i & T3i  - with hack -  footage thru L&T.
Per Canon's mark iii product page, downloaded the latest and greatest EOS plug-in -
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_...
After installing, attempted to open files in L&T and after a couple of mintues of spinning circle action (that status meter in bet/ browser & queue) the FCP app crashed.
Called Canon this AM.  They're claiming latest L&T plug-in will only work if you're targeting files off a device (ie off original cards) or a virtual drive.  Also said that's been true of previous Canon HDSLR model's footage - 5D ii, 7D, etc. Which totally wasn't my experience - for last 2 years been transferring full contents off cards (keeping folder structure intact) onto external drives and opening successfully in L&T from those.  But that's another story.
Anyway, still have the cards around so tried to bring in off the original cards, via FW card reader device, in L&T and still no luck. Again, crashed the app.
Also opened the card in Canon's image browser app - does recognize/import the footage but oddly can't read any of the metadata for the clips.
Called Canon again and they didn't have any answers;  suggested I reach out to Apple.
Footage itself doesn't seem to be corrupt in any way.  Have opened in Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip.
Please, if anybody has any ideas, would love to hear them.
Ideal is to continue to use the L&T too for this workflow.
    Getting worried, Nick.

have you tried deleting (or resetting) your fcp preferences?

  • FCP 7 crashes when Log & Transfer MXF files

I just got a new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio that includes FCP 7.
I just received footage from my DP shot on a Panasonic HVX200 on P2 Cards and saved as MXF files. I saved all files onto my MacBook with a backup on an external USB drive (another set was saved on a Firewire 800 drive).
    All footage was shot 720p/24fps.
I can view the files on the Log & Transfer preview window - but when I attempt to ingest via Log & Transfer, the transfer begins but suddenly stops (status is idle) and the red ! stop sign appears - obviously the file was not ingested. When I attempt to re-start the transfer or try with another file, FCP crashes.
My understanding is FCP 7 is able to accept native P2 format files (MXF) without transcoding - so it is very disappointing this is not working.
    Easy Setup settings are:
    Format: Panasonic DVCPRO HD
    Use: DVCPRO HD 720p/24
    Portion of error log:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000ffffffff
    Crashed Thread: 0
I would greatly appreciate any insight!

It doesn't transcode...it wraps the MXF files into a QT wrapper, joining audio and video. DVCPRO HD P2 mainly. AVCintra native support is here too, but you need to render to ProRes.
    BUT...that isn't the case here...try this:
in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

  • Log & Transfer of .R3D to Apple Pro Res HQ stopped working

I had been successfully Transferring my .R3d footage to Apple Pro Res HQ and now that I'm about half way through I am unable to bring my footage into the Log & Transfer queue. When I select the appropriate folder via Directory and click Open, nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?

  • Playhead In Log & Transfer Viewer Doesn't Stay Where It's Put?

I've noticed this minor quirk that happens with AVCHD footage in the Log & Transfer window.
If I drag the playhead (in the L&T Viewer) and let go to set an In or Out point, the playhead jumps back slightly on most occasions making it impossible to choose the exact spot. On clips of around 20 seconds, the jump back on releasing the playhead varies between 2 frames and 12 frames. On very rare occasions it stays exactly where it is dropped.
    Is this a normal feature?
It's no problem but it is a bit odd.

Ah, the beauties of trying to edit media with interframe compression. It's a GOP structure. There really only are frames every 15 frames or so. Pick one, any one, try and get close. This is just one of the reasons it's good to get out of this garbage MPEG format.
FCP does it in HDV using a huge amount of processor power and the upshot is you spend forever conforming on the backend of your production or whenever you render.
Live with it. Pick a frame that's close. Don't try and edit in there.

  • Log & Transfer from Sanyo Xacti

I submitted this question to another topic, but I think it needs its own.
I have just bought a little Xacti HD2000, mainly as a research tool, but there are times when I want to include shots in a HDV project in FCP7. The Xacti offers a range of formats from "Full HR" (1920x1080 60fps) down to "TV-SHQ" (640x480 30 fps). It's my assumption that this format is (or is compatible with) AVCHD.
My aim is to ingest the footage using the Log & Transfer window and transcode it from "Full SHQ" (1920x1080 30fps) to ProRes 422 (set in the Preference Pane for AVCHD). However Log & Transfer doesn't appear to recognise the Xacti folder format, it tells me that it "contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
Is there a way to fix this so it does recognise the folder or do I have to transcode each shot individually with Compressor?

OK, so I've now evaluated a few options including Streamclip, Visual Hub (still works) and Compressor 3.5 (part of the new FCS). I have always been a bit intimidated by Compressor, but after a few tutorials I've managed to sort my way through the labyrinthine interface and set up a Custom Template for converting my Xacti files to ProRes. Using a batch and a virtual cluster I've found it's really just as simple as Streamclip, has a lot more parameters and fits into my workflow quite well.
My original question was about how to ingest the AVCHD files using the the FCP "Log and Transfer" window, which doesn't work because it doesn't recognise the file structure of the SD card. I'd still like to try this our if anyone can suggest a way.

  • Log & transfer question

In the past I have ingested my AVCHD .mts files direct from the SD cards via "Log & transfer" with no problems. Unfortunately a colleague has left the country I'm in, with the SD cards and left me with direct copies on a hard disc.
When I try and use Log & transfer to ingest the same .mts files from a disc it doesn't recognise the files. Is this normal?

Did they copy the FULL CARD structure? Leave nothing out? Keep in EXACTLY the way it appeared on the card? In other words...made a folder, copied everyting on that card into that folder? If so, then in Log and Transfer, just select that folder.
If not...boo on them. Hisssss! Then you will need third party options like Toast Titanium or Clipwrap2. I recommend Clipwrap...I use it and really like it.

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • Log and capture or Log and transfer?

I'm a newbie to FCP, I've been working at it and researching, so I have a basic understanding, been able to do some good stuff, now I'm looking to find more time-economical ways to do things.  I'm a football coach, looking to cut up game films into individual plays (1 play per clip), and ideally being able to name each clip by it's play name "Trap" or "Pop Pass" for example.  It looks like I need to get into logging if possible.  My workflow at present when dealing with an opponent's film is to take a DVD, and get it onto my computer using MPEG Streamclip.  I've been using DVC-PAL as a codec at someone's suggestion, I can't rmemeber where I got that.  Is this a mistake?  Anyhow, I now import that movie file into FCP using File>Import.  At this point I can't do any logging though, if I try Log and Capture or Log and Transfer I get "Unable to initialize video deck", though it tells me I can still use Capture Now.  Once it opens the Log and Capture window, I get "Error: this operation requires a controllable deck."  and directs me to the Audio/Video Settings.  Here's where I'm pretty much lost.  Do I try to adjust settings from here?  If so, to what?  Do I need to start by changing my MPEG Streamclip settings and then trying to match those up in my FCP Audio/Video Settings?  Or do I need to completely overhaul the way I'm approaching this?  ARGH!  I've been impressed with myself getting to this point, any help from here would be greatly appreciated, thanks all!

Log and Capture is used if you are capturing footage from tape based formats.  DV, HDV, HDCAM...others.
Log and Transfer is for tapeless camera systems.  P2, XDCAM, Canon DSLR, AVCHD.
If your footage comes from DVDs...and you convert the footage to QT files...then you simply go to FILE>IMPORT.  You don't log with this method.  Just import and work with the footage.

  • Log & Transfer Captures Every Other Clip

    Mac OS 10.6.7
    FCP 6.0.6
Trying to Log & Transfer AVCHD footage from a SDXC card.  When I batch "Add the Selection to Queue", the status bar goes through the process as if it was capturing all the clips.  However, only every other clip shows up in the FCP bin and on the Media Drive.
Would appreciate any help as in the middle of production and need to off load some video so I can reformat for more shooting.
I shot the footage on a Panasonic AG-AF100 (5).  Log and Transfer worked beautifully the first several imports.  Just noticed this yesterday for the first time.
    thanks,

Did you ever reprt this as a possible bug?
You should use the "Feedback" page : http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html
or better still, the Radar Bug reporting page (preferebale because it affords you some degree of feedback from Apple on the status of the bug investigaion, but you'll need to create free developer account to use the system) : https://bugreport.apple.com/
