Footage from HD 1080i in a 23.97 timeline.. help!

Alright folks i'm working on a feature and have hit a snag and would like your help. We shot some of the footage on a sony hdr-fx1 and the rest in true 24p so thus are editing in a 720, 24p timeline. When I drop the footage I edited from the fx1 (editing in fcp6) into the timeline, it put gaps in between the clips (so i had to bring them all back together) and also introduced a kind of stutter in the video. I can live with it, but its very annoying, anyone have any thoughts? I've tried exporting whole sequences which gets rid of the gaps, but it still has the stutter which could just be because of the 24p timeline, but i thought FCP6 allowed for integration of multiple frame rates within a timeline, any thoughts?
Going from this timeline:
HD (1440x1080), 29.97, compressor HDV 1080i60
to:
HD (960x720), 23.98, compressor DVCPRO HD 720p60
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yeah.. the master's hoping to be transfered to HD. Usually we have everything synced on our end to AE via EDL so we just change the clip frame rates and the timeline frame rate, although this is one of the rare cases where they brought us an already edited FCP document all in 29.97, and the 3:2 cadence doesnt line up per edit. EDL fails when we try due to the nested sequences.

  • Properly pasting 720x480 footage from a 1080i sequence onto a 720x480 seq..

I usually edit 1080i footage so I have my FCP sequence settings set up accordingly, but when a friend asked me to edit a tape of 720x480 footage I forgot to change the settings. Now I am almost done editing and need to figure out how to properly paste the 720x480 footage from the 1080i sequence onto a new 720x480 sequence. I need to do this so I can export as a 720x480 qt.
I say properly because I already tried it but on the new 720x480 sequence the image now looks really stretched out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Well there really is not any attributes to remove because I did not make any changes to the clips myself, but for the sake of solving this issue I also tried checking all the attributes and then individually as well.

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • Trying to export .MTS footage filmed in 1080i

Hi, I recently bought a sony HDR-XR150 camcorder and am filming in HD FX 1080i and the quality is amazinggg when I hook it up to the TV via HDMI. but when I export the footage from iMovie '11 the image quality isn't nearly as good. I've tried exporting with multiple different settings and I cannot figure out how to keep the quality of the footage once it's exported. Can somebody give me some tips?
    Thank you,
    Justin

    Hi, Justin.
I bought recently a SONY HDR-XR550VE camcorder with 1080i resolution. I wanted to work with iMovie in HD.
What was my surprise that when I imported videos in HD from the camcorder (verified that the clips was in HD 1080i playing these clips directly from the camera to the HD TV) the films are imported in iMovie '11 in standard definition!!. It was impossible to import in HD. I tried everything without results. The clips are imported in STD (standard definition).
I investigated a little bit in Google and the answer to import videos in HD to iMovie'11 from the SONY HDR-XR550VE is:
    - Install Turbo.264 HD Video Converter from ELGATO (not very expensive).
    - Import videos in 1080p to my Mac from the camera.
    - Place the import clips in a local folder of my Mac.
    - Rename the files and make them sort (f.e.: clip1.mov)
    - Open iMovie and choose "Import from file"
    - Select the desired files to import
    - And.. thats it!.
With these steps I have HD1080p clips to work in iMovie '11
    I hope this helps.
    Regards.

  • Importing footage from sony HDR-SR12 to External for later use in imovie?

Hi all, I have a question, I would like to save my movie footage which is on my sony HDR-SR12 to a external drive(G Raid1TB) so I can view and also import clips to imovie for making movie's later. I have partitioned the Ext HD 150gb for photos and 781gb for movie footage. Just out of curiosity I mounted my camera and pressed get info and the format on the sony camera is MS-Dos(fat32) does this matter at all?  Also which is the best way or how do I  import the footage from sony hdr-sr12 to the external Hd. I have never done this before so your help would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to mess up.
    Thank You
    Jess

I should have mentioned, it is a good idea to make an archive copy of your AVCHD footage before importing. You should be able to do this from the FILE menu in iMovie. This will preserve the AVCHD files exactly as they were on the camera.
When you import, you convert the AVCHD files (which are highly compressed) into Apple Intermediate Codec, which is suitable for editing.
If you want to make sure that your archive copy is working properly, you can import from your archive copy, rather than importing directly from the camera. This is a good way to make sure you have a good archive copy before erasing the video on the camera.

  • Is it possible to transfer stored (b-roll) video footage from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro event library? Is so, what do I need?

I have been editing in final cut express and now that I'm working in Pro X I would like to transfer my b-roll footage from FCX to Pro X. I read that there is an app. that you can buy that does this for Final Cut Pro 7, is this possible with Final Cut Express?

Any media used in FCE can be used in FCP. No third party software is required.
You cannot take an FCE project to FCP. 7toX will not help as FCE has no XML export.

  • Capturing Footage From Composite / S-Video into FCE

I want to capture some footage from analogue sources into my Mac. It can either be via composite or S-Video but my question is : Which gizmo should I use to convert the analogue signal into DV?
The Canopus range seems like it would do the trick (ADVC55, 110 or 300, with the 55 closest to my price-point.) But the specs say it's compatible with FCP, and don't mention FCE explicitly. If I buy it, will it work, or is there some particular difference between FCP and FCE, that means it won't?
    Mac Mini 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Canopus works just fine with FCE. I've been using my ADVC 110 with two versions of FCE for two years and it works fine ... the 300 should be even better cuz of the built in TBC. I know from others that you will have no compatibility probs.

  • Copying footage from mac to pc

    Hi all,
I am a still photographer who is making a transition into some amount of video work to add to the services I can offer clientele. I recently ran into the following scenario:
I shot some footage for a local University. They wanted me to transfer the footage from my external fw drive, which is formatted as mac OS journaled, to their external drive, which is formatted as pc NTFS. I found that the my mac drive could only read, and not write to, the NTFS formatted drive.
I hooked my mac drive up to the Universitys pc's (Windows XP) and they would recognize the drive but not the mac OS formatted volume.
I will probably run into this situation again and would like to have a viable solution at the ready.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Geoff,
That sounds like a 'client friendly' solution.
I've looked at both Paragon NTFS and MacFuse combined with Tuxera NTFS and they both seem like viable software solutions for the Mac.

My iPad is logged into my iCloud account, but my wife's iTunes. I have uploaded video footage from my iPhone to my iCloud. It appears on the iPad but is not accessible in iMovie? What's the fix?

You shouldn't have to change your iTunes account to not have to purchase it twice.  If your devices are using different iTunes IDs, just purchase it on one device, then import it to your iTunes library by connecting the device to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Once in iTunes, you should be able to sync it to your other device (assuming both devices are syncing with the same iTunes library).  (And even if they were syncing with separate libraries, you could use Home Sharing to copy the app from one library to the other.)
    Or, am I missunderstanding something?

  • Importing footage from JVC camera in FCP6

    Hi all,
I am working with a JVC Everio HD camera (I think it is the GZ-EX250).  I can't find a way to import footage directly into FCP6. It seems the only way to get the footage in there is to import it into iMovie (I have iMovie 8), then export it as a Quicktime, and then import the Quicktime into FCP. I've done this with footage that was shot using this camera in SD mode. My understanding is that if I want to shoot in HD that I'll havge to convert the footage before bringing it into iMovie. Seems like a pretty cumbersome process. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know how to import my HD footage from this camera directly into FCP6?
I hope my explanation makes enough sense for someone to give me a good answer. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks very much in advance!

MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz INtel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).

Great tutorial - easy to follow. I notice I only had two preferences listed for importing - there was no setting for Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) so I used Apple ProRes 422. Is the lack of choices because I'm using FCP6 not 7, or do the preferences get added as you hook up different cameras? At any rate, thanks for the help!

  • Need help importing HD footage from external hard drive

I have an external hard drive with some footage from a friend. I cannot view the footage either in QT or through importing to FCP. I have version 4.5 of FCP HD. The audio works on the clips, but the video does not. Im guessing it might be a format issue, as the footage is HD footage shot at 24P. I've tried opening a separate timeline and changing the settings there, but that didnt seem to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that the footage is HDV, and FCP 4.5 cannot work with HDV. That format came out over a year after FCP 4.5 was released. FCP 4.5 was dubbed FCP HD because it worked with DVCPRO HD footage natively. HDV support didn't hit FCP until 5.0.
You have options. Because HDV came out when FCP 4.5 was in use and didn't work with it, a couple companies made solutions to import this footage. www.lumierehd.com and www.hdvxdv.com.
BUT...that will get you the HDV footage at 29.97...60i. HDV 24p support didn't arrive until FCP 5.1.2. So you can try those solutions and see what happens, but most likely you'll have to upgrade to the latest version of FCP...6.0.2

  • How can I create 50p footage from 50i in Premiere or After FX?

    Hi,
I'm trying to create 50p footage from 50i. Not 25p! I want to create 50p footage through a process that it is used in 100 HZ LCD TV sets
This is the idea. If you have 50i footage you can easily interpolate fields and get a 25p footage. Fine.
But I would like not to do a simple interpolation.
Let's say I have two 50i frames. I want to create a frame between the two made with the lower field of the first one and the upper field from the second one . This is the process used by 100 Hz LCD monitors that can actually invent non-existent frames by this method.
But Premiere doesn't work this way.
If you try to export a 50i footage to 50p what you get is 50p footage with identical frames at twos (1=2, 3=4, etc..)
You can try a slightly different approach.
You can slow down 50% the 50i footage (and then speed it up again). This forces Premiere to interpolate and create an extra frame but.. here is the problem.. Premiere "thinks in frames".. and interpolates a totally new interlaced frame. This frame, coming from interpolation, is actually a "fake" frame Comes from nowhere and so it has much less definition then the originals (the one before and the one afterwards). If then you render, speed up at 200% and watch the result what you see is a good frame, a blurred frame, a good frame, a blurred frame, etc..
Does anybody know a method of getting out 50 real interlaced or progressive frames with this composition?
    INTERLACED  (100i):  1U1L 1L2U 2U2L 2L3U 3U3L
PROGRESSIVE 50p): (1U1L) (1L2U) (2U2L) (2L3U) (3U3L)   .... That is exactly as interlaced but with the two fields interpolated
Also please note that this method applied on an edited movie creates smooth transitions at cuts (a frame that has 1 field from the scene before and one form the scene after).
    thanks,
    Marcello

I would do this outside of Premiere.
    Here's a thread to pull.
Though the web site information deals with NTSC, the script's author (Dan Isaacs) has built in several PAL options as well.  I've just never used them.
