Footage incurs drop in brightness after capturing into FCP... Help?

I have had this problem intermitently over the past few weeks and have only found very casual references from other users regarding it. However recently I tried to import HDV footage and the brightness dropped to about 80% of what it is when previewing in the log and capture window.
So to explain in more detail...
When I preview footage to capture into FCP within the Log and Capture window it is consistent with the brightness on the lcd and in the viewfinder of the camera. However after the footage is down capturing and I preview it in the canvas window the footage is about 80% of the brightness it was when capturing.
I have tried everything in these posts; I have reinstalled. Deleted the receipts for quicktime 7.1.3 and reinstalled, tired to capture the HDV footage as DV.
No help. This problem has now become consistent and I found no topics that directly address this. I have to import this footage and deliver it to my client asap and I am honestly at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
PowerBook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I want to apologize if I keep sounding like a broken record and sounding like someone who doesn’t really understand what they are talking about. I first want to layout that I completely understand, and have understood, the dangers and the incompatibility issues associated with video and a computer monitoring system. Therefore I can safely say that I am working at a fcp station that allows me to monitor my footage on a true video monitor where the color spaces and gamma match.
I have since my last post tried several things and want to reiterate the few things I have already tried because I feel this discussion thread makes it seem as if my issues are generic newbie issues with someone who does understand the editing systems. I assure you that I do.
That being said I have taken a few steps to find the problem. Since my last post I have tried to edit normal NTSC video and have had no trouble. My trouble is solely with hdv. I would also like to clarify, or rather restate that the image brightness qualities that are different are between the log and capture preview and the viewer and canvas windows, as well as when monitoring with my external video monitor which is a 1080i Panasonic multiformat monitor. So I want to stress that I see the image on my screen, even my computer screen, with an acceptable brightness. It is only after bringing them into fcp that the brightness drops.
Does the low-rez proxy image issue really mean that when editing hdv on my comp that I will only be able to see the true product after outputting to a quicktime movie and viewing on my monitor using quicktime? If so, that ***** and I am importing using standard dv.
Again though I want to thank you all for responding and trying to help me out here. It’s really been frustrating me and I appreciate the help in trying to get to the bottom of this.

  • Alpha Channel Problem from After Effects into FCP

    Hello
Using After Effects I've masked out a figure in some footage so I can composite it into a timeline. When I import the new .mov I render out (using RGB + Alpha channels and Millions of Colours +) into FCP the figure is surrounded by a solid black background.
I've repeated the process a few times and then tried importing the .mov into FCP on another computer. This actually worked, the channel became transparent and the mask was there. So this should mean there's something wrong with my version of FCP?
I'm using After Effects 6.5 and FCP 5.0.1 on my Mac and FCP Studio 2 on the computer it worked on.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wait a second, there was a huge thread here a few weeks ago about bad alphas. The victims eventually (IIRCC) were forced to do a complete reinstall of EVERYTHING Tiger/Leopard and FCS2. It was an ugly shouting match and reinstalling/reverting to an earlier version of QT did not solve it for them. Check the revs of software on the two machines and compare them carefully.

  • Capture into FCP

Hi Guys, Im currenly using a decklink extreme capture card with the new mac pro. The file sizes are massive at the mo. Is it possible to capture into a lower format dirrectly into FCP. Something like a h264 codec or do I have to capture in 10bit uncompresed.
    Owen

H.264 is a delivery codec, not one used for editing. But sure, you have MANY options open to you. DV, Offline RT are the lower quality ones.

  • Capture Edirol V-8 into FCP - help please!

    OK, here's my setup:
    2 - Panasonic DVX100B's
    1- MacPro (Quad)
    1- Edirol V-8 (http://www.edirol.net/products/en/V-8/index.html)
    FCP software
Here is my dilemma. I just bought the Edirol V-8 video mixer but have not gotten it yet. It does everything that I need it to do in a video mixer, but it does not have a Firewire output.
I do a 2-camera shoot (1 side, 1 overhead). I am trying to mix these signals on-the-fly thus avoiding a lot of FCP editing in post.
My question(s): What is the best way to capture the signal directly into FCP (using capture now) from the V-8? It has BNC and S-Video outputs but I've heard that these signals are of a low quality. I need this to be SD, DVD quality.
Do I need a card like a Aja Kona LS SD to capture the S-Video or BNC signal to FCP?
    (http://www.usedvideogear.com/catalog/aja-kona-ls-sd-10bit-digital-and-12bit-anal og-capture-and-outp-p-748.html)
Should I return the V-8 and get something else that is in the $2K price range?
Should I get a miniDV deck, hook up the cameras to the V-8, then the V-8 to the miniDV deck and then go firewire into FCP?
I am "learning as I go" here, so ANY help is greatly appreciated!

Before you buy...make sure FCP will recognize the unit as a DV device...DON't take a salespersons advice on this factor.
We have the Videonics (now Focusinfo) MXProDV 4 channel switcher...4 analog in/2 out - 2DV in / 1 out.
We have two issues...FCP won't recognize it as a FW device, so can't directly do 'Capture Now' with it.
Secondly, our cameras are anywhere from 25 to 100 ft from the unit. FW cable length is best when under 12 ft or so. There are some FW repeater/boosters available (search this forum or google), which might help, but we've not tried them. (Besides we're limited to 2 FW inputs and work w/4 cameras)
I have been partially successful getting the switcher to recognize DV cameras on 25' FW cables, but not consistently.
If you purchase the unit, make sure it's from a reputable dealer (who will take the unit back if necessary) and save your receipts...run some tests to make sure it's solid before committing to it.
Hope it works for you. If it does, post back and let us know.

  • Sped up clip after capture in FCP 6.0

Everything I capture in FCP 6.0 from my JVC GRD 850 is sped up. I'm using OS X.4.11 All of my settings seem to be OK. Any idea what's going on?

It's not because of incorrect settings then. Next thing to try:
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • How to delete 4 out of 6 audio tracks that were captured into FCP?

I accidentally left all the mono tracks setting on while capturing video and audio media files. I would like to know how to get rid of 4 out of the 6 tracks other than when the clip is cut into a sequence then I delete the extra tracks.
    PowerPC G5 4x 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Kona card

I've never tried this, so I'm not sure of the gotchas you might need to overcome, but if you open the media file in QuickTime Player (Pro), and go to Window > Show Movie Properties, you can delete any of the audio tracks you care to, by dragging them to the Trash, or click Delete, or choose Edit > Cut, or press Delete.
I'm thinking that if you go that route, you might need to delete the clip in the Browser first, make the changes in QTPP, then Import that media file into the Browser. Otherwise, FCP might complain about the track deletions.
Or maybe after making those changes in QTPP, Export as a different filename and Import that file into the FCP Browser, keeping the original as is. Just guessing.
But I repeat: I've never tried this.

  • Formatting a MiniDV tape for Capturing into FCP 6

How do I format a miniDV tape so that I can review footage as I shoot without breaking the time code? I am having huge difficulty capturing because of broken time code.

You use tried and true shooting technique. Pre-striping is a myth, because all cameras crash record, not insert record.
    Good practice states:
Run at least 30 seconds of color bars at the head of a tape.
If you're going to be doing a lot of powering down, reviewing takes in camera, etc, it's good practice to run 10 or 20 seconds of bars every time you stop the camera. Then when you are ready to record again, back the tape up into the bars and hit the magic button. That way the code will re-generate from where you left off.
Also good practice to roll tape at LEAST 5 seconds before you call action. and the same at the end of a take.
Shooting documentary style? Do the above, only more so.

  • Capturing into FCP using a canon optura20 camera

This is just a recent problem, when i connect my camera(Canon Optura20) to my computer (iMac G5) and open up final cut pro 5 and go to the capture screen it sees the camera and knows it connected but when i click on "Capture" it bring up a bigger screen but its all black and after waiting a few secounds it will stop. What can i do?

If you clicked, "Capture Now," then that window is supposed to be there. Just press the play button on your camera the next time you see it or try capturing using "Batch Capture," or "Capture Clip".

  • After Effects into FCP DV NTSC

What are the best settings to use when exporting a After Effects file for use in a FCP NTSC DV based timeline?
I'm looking for codec, files size, upper or lower field, quality settings ect. Square vs. rectangle pixel aspect ratio.
    Thanks in advance.

I agree with the captain. You want your AE render to match the NTSC-DV sequence preset in all respects: 720x480, lower field first, NTSC-CCIR 6601 pixel aspect ratio, in either the 4:3 or anamorphic flavour depending on which format you're working in.
The AE preset NTSC-DV comp settings should be fine. But if you want to be extra sure, export a short reference movie from your FCP timeline, then import this into AE, then drag it to the "make new composition" icon at the bottom of the AE project window, and you will get a new composition with the settings you require. You can then remove the ref movie from this new comp and use it as your output comp. You still have to choose the NTSC-DV codec in the AE render window, but your resolution and pixel aspect will have been set for you.
    Best of luck.

  • Hi8 capture into FCP problem...

FCP is not recognizing the camcorder I have connected to the computer in order capture Hi8 tapes. I believe that this setup should work, but perhaps someone knows more about it.
I have a digital 8mm camcorder that plays hi8 tapes and has a firewire connection. It is the smallest one, the 4pin, so I bought a 4pin to 9pin adapter to put it through the firewire 800 port on my MacPro.
I set the Capture Preset to DV NTSC Basic, and I clicked non-controllable device in the Capture window. Actually, once it saw it and captured an audio file with nothing on it I have tried all those old tricks like shutting down the computer and starting up again with the camera on. I've tried two different ports; the back and front.
I guess the problem could be the adaptor; but I want to check all the settings/presets against those that people have used successfully. If anyone has experience with this, please tell me how you did it!
    Thanks!

No, but I can use Google.
Don't use DV NTSC Basic. Use regular DV NTSC, unless your audio is 32k, in which you'll have to make a 32k DV NTSC preset. There might be a problem with the FW800 connector. Quite a few people are reporting problems with these cables. Definitely use the rear FireWire port. Do you have any other devices connected?

  • Capturing from Beta SP via Canopus ADVC110 into FCP HD - HELP!

please help - desperately trying to capture into FCP HD using DV PAL 48 preset. I have BNCtoRCA adapter out of the beta SP video out going into the RVC video in of the canopus converter. Then 4 pin firewire out of the converter into my firewire 400 port. Have switched to all the correct relevant settings on the bottom of the canopus ...... but ... in my log & capture window the video appears to have no reference. i.e. black & white, scrambled. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I am sure... very confusing because you're right - that's exactly what it looks like the problem is! Sound is coming in scrambled also. If I try to capture it for longer than a couple of seconds I get an error saying there is a "problem with the source tape" Have tried every combination with the switches on the canopus box, changed cables, everything I can think of.

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

  • HD Capture into Xserve raid dropped frames

Any body know how to set up an xserve raid to capture uncompressed 1080/24p footage. I striped it to a raid 5 got dropped frmes detected, redid the stripe in raid 3 got the same thing, please help!
I'm shooting on the Canon XL H1 at 1080/24p sending the feed from the cameras HD/SDI output to a Panasonic AJ-1200A DVCPRO HD deck. after capture I want to import the footage into FCP thru the blackmagic multibridge extreme onto a 7 terabyte xserve raid.

You may check your cache settings on Xserve RAID via RAID Admin tool.
Here is the settings I believe should work for most video captuer cases.
RAID ADMIN 1.5, with 1.5 firmware on Xserve RAID
    1) Use controller write cache checked
    2) Use Drive cache checked
    Read Prefetch:

  • Audio dropping after capture

I seem to be having a problem with audio dropping out after capturing. When I play the tape back in the camera the audio plays fine so I guess it was recoreded properly on the tape but when I play the captured footage back in FCP the audio drops out here and there. I am capturing from the camera which the footage was shot on (XL2). I've searched the forms for people with the same issue but can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Just to check - are you using FCP4.5 and have recently upgraded to OSX4.9? Because if so that could be the issue; it was for me for something very similar. In which case your options are to upgrade FCP or downgrade OSX.
The other thing you could try - regardless of your system and version - is to capture using Vidi - http://www.mitzpettel.com/software/vidi.php (I only just recommended this to someone, I am not on commission honestly, it's free!)
I have found that Vidi will sometimes ignore timecode glitches etc that FCP is annoyingly sensitive to.
