Footage is dark when played in FCP 7
Footage is Dark in Final Cut Pro 7 when played in both Viewer and Canvas. The Footage is "Normal" when paused. The moment I play the footage, it becomes significantly darker. I'm using Final Cut Pro 7.03 and OS X 10.8.1.
I've attached two screenshots. The first is the paused footage, the second is the same shot, just darker when I hit play.
It's less subtle when editing darker, moodier scenes. When I hit play, I lose about a stop of light. Areas that are somewhat illuminated are completely black the moment I play the clip. It makes it difficult to see the actor's eyes, etc.

RED ONE 4.5K footage is darker when paused

Using footage transcoded from RED ONE Rushes
When I import .mov files that are half-res 422 ProRes HQ compressed file of a RED ONE 4.5k Wide original, I find that my footage is darker when paused. When I press play the film lightens a bit while playing until I stop it. I feel like this has something to do with the quicktime Gamma Shift from the new version of Quicktime X. I do not notice this problem when I open the files in quicktime pro 7.6.6. I had Quicktime X, but deleted it because I thought it may have been causing the problem.
This problem does not happen to my half-res 422 ProRes HQ compressed file from 2k footage, only the 4.5k wide. This is weird because the same footage playing on the same version of FCP on a tower works fine at my school. It is only this computer that seems to be weird.This isn't the gamma shift issue, this is typical of playback on footage that is high res played back on slow drives. This won't show up on an external monitor connected via a capture card.

ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL BROADCAST MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the video data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or broadcast monitor.

"Dropped Frames on Playback" - when playing back FCP's Bars+tone
We've been having a problems with one of our edit suites dropping frames when playing back to tape (Edit to tape).
In checking it out, I created a new project and added DCP's PAL Bars and tone to the default sequence. FCP is stopping playback with the "Dropped Frames on Playback" error after 13"-15". I've tried all the usual stuff - trashing FCP prefs, zapping PRAM, repairing preferences etc.
Has anyone any further suggestions??
RT is set to Safe, with dynamic frame rate and video quality.
The Mac is a Dual 2.66GHz Dual Core Xeon, 4Gb RAM, with an AJA kona lhe card, connected to an XServe Raid via fibre. The tape deck is a DigiBeta M2000.
I've read all the posts I could find, and checked Shane's stock answer #12.

In my case, a new user worked, for awhile.
Through a lot of trial and error and a reinstallation that was ineffectual - properly surmised by a very learned friend of mine, Mr. Sheffield - I found a project to be corrupt. So thoroughly corrupt that it would corrupt FCP and any projects opened downstream which is why my new user worked for awhile. Took me some time to figure out the proper order to open things after a system restart. Looks like I'll be doing a rebuild of the project through xml which shouldn't take to long.

Why does a .mov slideshow look much darker when played with idvd
I have created a .mov slideshow from iphoto. I now want to write it to a dvd using iDVD. When setting up the various dropzones the images look great. When I play the .mov in Quicktime, the images look great. When I preview the proposed DVD, all of the images look to contrasty / dark. Why is this and how can I fix it?

Again I repeat, in every other application, the images look the way they are meant to be.
Only in iDVD do they become "corrupted".
Anyone who has anything to do with digital imaging knows you should calibrate your monitors.
An industry standard calibrated environment is a must when dealing with a digital imaging environment.
iDVD is screwing up the images ad making them darker.
Quicktime isn't.
iPhoto isn't.
Photoshop isn't.
Capture One Pro isn't.
Adobe Bridge isn't.
Camera Raw isn't.
InDesign isn't.
Acrobat isn't.
I can list many more applications on both PCs and Macs that correctly display the images.
iDVD is the only one that screws them up!!!!!
Are you seriously suggesting that calibrating our monitors is the cause of iDVD displaying images incorrectly and different to all of the above mentioned software?

Canon DSLR footage immediately stops when playing back.
Our company just bought this package specifically for the native DSLR support. When we upload our footage from the DSLR, the playback immediately stops after roughly about a 1/2 second. It does this in both the source monitor and in the timeline. However it does allow you to scrub through the footage. But ironically when you try to scrub at the same speed as a playback, the playback head will stop and go back to the beginning. It is impossible to edit this way and it's very frustrating. Any thoughts on what could be going wrong?
We are shooting with a Canon t2i and have been converting them through Mpeg Streamclip in the past and editing in Final Cut.
The Premiere version is updated to 5.0.3
I'm using an iMac OS X 10.6.4 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.I should also mention we have a lot of other video software on this particular machine. Here's a snapshot to give you an idea. Could it be that one of these programs are conflicting?

How can I stop screen going dark when playing movies with night sceans?
When viewing a NetFlix movie, during night sceans, the screen goes dark.
You don't.
Usually only the free apps do this, paid versions do away with the ads. -
W520 Colors Get Dark when Playing Game
I just got my W520 and love it so far. My one problem is that when I open a game (Blockland), the display colors become really dark. When I close the game, they go back to normal. This started after I color-calibrated the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

Spinning ball when playing ProRes footage
I'm having a problem editing Canon Mark 7 and Mark 5 footage transcoded to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) progressive, 24fps. Every time I hit play I get a spinning beach ball for 45 seconds.
I've searched the archives for similar problems but most seem to be years ago, suggesting either conflicts in codec on the original footage or suggesting the OS or FCP were improperly installed. That wouldn't seem to be the case with me.
This is a fairly new computer (Feb. '11) and everything was installed clean - the OS, FCP, all apps, etc. I have four 2TB internal drives (factory installed) and I use one for my system and apps, another for capture scratch, another for project files. I'm running OSX 10.6.7, FCP 7.0.3. I don't allow my hard drives to sleep. I've tried all the footage on both my internal drives and an external FireWire 800 drive. To make the problem even more confounding, I just finished an extensive project using the same codec, frame rate, everything and didn't have any problem at all. That project was running entirely off an external hard drive connected by FireWire 800.
Any thoughts?

New to FCP. Dropped frames when playing section in the timeline w/audio, Viewer plays fine tho. Plays for bout 1 sec with no sound, nothing showing coming through the audio meters. Problem came out the blue, made no conscious changes to settings. FCP 7.0.3. iMac, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. OS10.8.4. If any other info needed please let me know, will be happy to provide it. Thanx.

The other footage I have on the timeline is an mp3 file made in Garage Band and some footage I sent to Motion to edit. I do have some offline media on there since I switched computers but FCP had been working fine for a few months with it on there. I have not tried trashing my FCP Preferences. If I did would I have to back up my project? -
Colors in FCP looks different than when playing in QT7
The colors of the video's in FCP looks different than when playing back in QuickTime. I wonder if it can be a color management setting in FCP? I have the same problem when playing a clip in AE. I have two FCP machines, but only one of them is having this problem. Any ideas of what I can do to get the right colors back?
Have you enabled Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility in the QT Player preferences?

Why do photos flicker when imported and played in FCP?
When I import certain photos (some, but not all), they flicker in FCP in various parts of the image, and they also have a funny flickering when played back on QT. I have scanned without any particular precaution. I was wondering if anyone could help me correct the issue.
The flickering you see is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of either very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text/ titling or scanned images with a great deal of detail in high contrast. (Note: It does no good to import images hugely larger than the necessary pixel dimensions of the video sequence. All it does is force FCP to work harder at interpolation.)
As the alternate fields play, the offending element is essentially being turned on/off creating the impression of a flicker. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays and/or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
- (in FCP) field order>none
- (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
- (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
- (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
- (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
- (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned or still images.
A neat Photoshop trick is to use the selection tool to limit area you apply the vertical and/or gaussian blur to only the troublesome part. This way you don't have to indiscriminately soften the entire image.
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.

Quicktime not working after loading Lion. It is in Applications folder. It is dark when trying to play. Audio is there, no video. Is something set wrong?
It is supposed to be dark.
Is it all videos that don't display or just some. You may have installed something like Perian or Flip for Mac that translates the video codecs for Quicktime. They may need updating. -
Premiere Pro CC has a BUG (glitches) when playing XDCAM EX and XDCAM footage
I work with XDCAM EX footage and since I upgraded to CC all the footage now plays with glitches. Sometimes it just shows green. In addition to it the audio goes out of sync if you continue playing.
I did some research and other people are reporting the same issue but with XDCAM footage.
Adobe, please fix this bug. I can't edit anything like this. Also in the mean while let us, creative cloud members reinstall CS6. I can't just sit for days waiting for a fix.
I'll try a doing a clean reinstall of everytjing in the computer but if issue this persists, by tomorrow I'll have to switch back to Final Cut X.Maybe Adobe needs to expand it's beta program before release.

Playback speeds up intermittently on first scene when played after build

I have a problem with playback on apple dvd player after completing the build? When I play the authored project on apple dvd player after the build, after clicking on the play button in the main menu, the first scene (about 1 min. long) playback speeds up intermittently-normal speed then fast for a second then normal then fast-jumpy I guess might describe it. This only happens on the first scene with all the other scenes after this point in the timeline playing fine. I placed 2 new clips (different assets-scenes) to replace the first scene & the same issue happens with different asset clips being used in the same position (first) in the track timeline.
The scenes I used are pans of a running deer, which play fine anywhere else in the track timeline except the first position. When I play the project it's fine in simulator mode & in the project itself...this only happens after the build when playing on apple dvd player from VIDEO_TS folder. This is a test project for some footage so it's only 10 minutes long with bit rates at 5-6 ave. & 6-7.4 max.
-2 pass VBR-best motion.
Any ideas on what is going on?
I'm using DVDSP 2 with Jaguar 10.2.8.

Not a clue about the problem, sorry, but can "imagine" a workaround just to fool the problem.
You must have a PLAY button that connect to that first scene (first chapter in the track, I guess). If you connect that button to the second chapter (just to try) that plays fine or again behaves as it was first?
If that way plays fine, you can add a "false" first scene (i.e. one second of black exported from FCP) and connect the PLAY button to the real first (now second in the track) chapter.
I told you, it's just a workaround to have in hand in case your dead line gets close!! -
No adjustments appear in canvas when played! PLEASE HELP
all of my footage is slightly darker (some worse than others) when played in canvas. i try to adjust in many different ways and adjustments don't appear when playing, after i render. any thoughts/ideas appreciated. if this is something silly and simple, i apologize i'm pretty new!

With the timeline active select Command 0 (zero), or menu: Sequence > Settings.
