Footage is 'jerky'

Hello,
I exported my film from encore and watched it to discover the footage appears 'jerky'. It isn't horrid, but noticeable to the trained eye. My test audience didn't seem to notice, but I can clearly tell. It looks like the footage is missing a few frames per second. I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure if it is the storage device (standard 4.7gb dvd), the burn speed, the footage, etc.
I am unable to successfully use Dynamic Link (long story short it causes a glitch for no darn reason).
Details:
I exported uncompressed from PP2.0
Imported into AE to add a 'film effect' (Film Magic Pro) and then exported uncompressed. I wasn't sure what format to use in AE for the output moduel so I used the default Video for Windows. I posted on the AE forum, but have not been able to determine if this was the proper format to export for intended DVD use.
Then imported into Encore, which demanded transcoding for 24 fps (23.### fps) footage. I then built the dvd for a test viewing and it turned out 'ridged/choppy'.
Any clues/suggestions guys? The footage was shot 24p using a DVX-100a
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pans when capturing will be jerky.
How do the clips play in the canvas, viewer and QT Pro Player?
In addition, how about some specs for hardware, RAM, dedicated internal media drive for footage, FCP and OS versions?
You have a couple of configurations in your sig, and I trust you aren't playing the footage off the internal HD of either the MP or MPB and that you don't have the cam and external HDD playing off FW.

  • De-interlaced footage becomes jerky

Tried this question in the quicktime corner, to no avail, sorry for anybody reading it again,
I shoot with a Sony PD150; DV interlaced in PAL. Footage looks smooth but ragged, both in iMovie HD, FCP, QuickTime and when played back on a flatscreen from a DVD.
I tried de-interlacing with FCP (filter and export option) and with Visual Hub. The ragged edges are gone, but camera movements become very jerky. First thought the problem was in the DVD, but it's not. The Quicktime Film, played back on the mac, is jerky too.
    Any suggestions to fix this?
    Thanks,
    KC

    Thanks bogiesan!
Glad to be able to offer a workable solution.
1/25 looks much better. I only used the shutter speed to control the light, when an ND filter wasn't enough and I didn't want to change the iris because of depth of field.
ah. Advanced photography requires advanced tools. You'll need a set of NDs or polariizers to control light that way. The 150 has such tiny sensors, though, you only get a decent depth of field effect at full telephoto and wide open.
Maybe you can help me out with three more questions:
    about the PD150
    1. In the manual set menu auto shutter is -- obviously -- set to 'off'. But is the 'prog. scan' option, in the same menu, any use in getting some sort of progressive footage
The manual for the 150 is available online at many sources if you've lost yours.
http://www.mediacollege.com/ (free download of the PDF)
I have never used the progressive shooting feature, I completely forgot it was there. Now I've got to experiment with it myself. However, shooting 25P is not the same as 50i, you will lose half of your temporal resolution. You want to be able to shoot 50P and then have the choice of converting it to interlaced.
    2. do you know what the 'frame rec' option in the 'camers set' menu does?
Records only a single frame when the start button is pressed. Used for still frame animation projects. Not recommended, the transport does not like to do this. If you need still image recording, use a memory stick.
    3. switching to HD. Any suggestions for an HD camera that's easier to operate than the PD150, has a flawless workflow with the Mac and XLR sound input?
Sorry, can't help you at all. We will not move to HD for at least two or three more years.
The 150/170 has far too few professional controls as it is now. Your desire for depth of field control suggests you need a professional grade camera but you want one with controls that are easily accessed and understood, not fewer of them.
The problem with the 150/170 is the necessary functions are hidden three or more menus deep. They are impossible to change quickly or inconvenient to check during real world photography so I tend to leave them alone.

  • Jerky playback of footage on a Tv

I burned a movie in final cut to a dvd. However when i try to play it back on a dvd player it is very jerky, is there anything i should take into consideration?
my footage was shot on a cannon rebel t5i and a go pro hero 2 both 1080p at 24frames per second. I am aware filming at 24 frames makes the footage more jerky but what i am experiencing on the Tv screen is extreme. when i play the movie in final cut there is no problem.

i played back with the built Video-ts folder, that stored on my Hard drive.
would i still run into that problem with switching layers?
so, i guess no body ran into this problem when authoring DVD that had one 4 hour long track?

I have read a number of forum treads and I'm at my wits end.  I want to capture in HD edit it in real time and export to DVD, BlueRay and Flash. I have spent hours on support and updated every driver and configuration setting that I know. PLEASE will someone tell me what do I need to do to get this to work?
Is it the DELL? Do I go to a Mac? (Ironic that most adobe tutorials are on Macs) Do I need a different solution? I'm going crazy!  Maybe it's me and I'm capturing and creating sequences all wrong. Please provide a workflow that is working for you. Let me know if you need more specifics. Thank you in advance!

    2. I did a search for HDVSplit and came up with this site. http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm Is this correct? Is there a released version?

  • HDV looks jerky, convert to AIC and exported from FCE: more jerky

First of all, I am editing a video that was shot in Japan and captured with FCP, hence the footage has the HDV codec.
When I view the footage in QT, it looks like the frame rate is messed up (the footage looks jerky, and you can see ghost trail type effects when there is a lot of motion.) There is also a wiggly black line, about 1 px wide at the top and bottom of the video the entire time.
Does anyone have any idea why it looks like this? It is a setting in QT? Or do I need to get my eyes checked? At first I thought the footage may have been shot at 25fps but when I look at the info, it says 29.97 like it should be.
I don't own FCP, so I'm editing this footage in FCE. I have converted it all to the AIC codec, and the jerkiness remains the same. The most bizarre thing is that I never noticed this until a few days ago. Do you think it has something to do with the interlacing (Upper fields)?
If necessary I can upload a sample HDV clip.
    Thank you!

Thank you Tom, I've actually uploaded a sample of the problem. You can see both the weird jerkiness and the wiggly black lines. Do you think it could just be the illusion of watching something interlaced on a computer monitor? This is actually my first time working with HD (upper fields.) I appreciate your help A LOT!

  • Slow motion problem

I'm using Shake's adaptive re-timing, but when I set the video to anything less than .5 speed (like .33, or .15) the rendered footage looks jerky and jitters back and forth when it interpolates the frames.
I don't think this could be due to the deinterlacing, because it's the same despite what I set the deinterlacing to.
MacBook Pro 17" Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8) 200 GB HD

Retiming techniques have their limits. You can get optimal results beetween 0 and 50 percent max (normal speed to half speed). After that limit, the software doesn't have enough informations to reconstruct the huge time gaps between two frames, especially if the footage represents a high speed movement.
Keep in mind that the retiming possibilities are for retiming, not for slow motion, there is no miracle at this point.
For slow motion videos, use high speed cameras. Most DVCproHD cameras have the ability to record at 60fps full frame, that's a good start.
For interlaced video, if you accept to loose image quality on the vertical resolution, the 25i format can be converted in a sort of 50p, that's not bad for low budget projects!

  • Why is my iPhone 4S Video Camera Changing Frame Rates?

I've been doing some video tests with my iPhone 4S and I've found that in low lighting situations it's recording video at 24fps instead of the advertised 30fps. In good lighting conditions it's recording at 30fps. It's obvious the camera is compensating for the light with the lower frame rate, however, when I got into iMovie or Quicktime Pro to cut together some footage, the two different frame rates are causing an issue because they aren't consistent. The footage gets jerky and there's audio clicks. None of this happens when they're played individually. Please advise.
ps I downloaded some other video camera apps and even ones that will lock you in at 30fps will still record at 24fps in low light situations, so it has to do with the Phone. Anyone know a workaround for this?  Thanks!

You can zoom before you start taking a video, but not after you start the video. Sorry.

  • Problem with Time Code Freeze during capture

    Hello All,
I used a JVC HD100 to shoot some SD 24pa footage this weekend.
I'm in a jam - I'm trying to capture 24pa footage I shot this weekend with the "advanced removal pulldown" preset in final cut. There's a point in the tape where something strange happens and the timecode freezes - it doesn't advance anymore. The footage is there, but timecode doesn't "count." Final Cut stops capturing. Not sure what happened. I tried to capture the footage using the "non-controllable device" setting and bypass timecode, but final cut refuses to do so. Any suggestions?
Would a solution be to record my footage to another tape? That way, the timecode would be clean for capture? My only concern is that using a deck means i'm recording 24pa footage onto a tape that's 29.97 fps. I don't want to lose the 24pa information while dubbing. Would this be okay?
    cheers,
    Luke

Thanks, Jerry. Okay, the saga continues.
I dubbed my 24pa footage onto another tape with good timecode. I captured this tape, but not without trouble. The advanced removal pulldown setting still doesn't like it, but I can capture it with straight dv ntsc without a problem.
I removed the pulldown with cinema tools, and I'm editing on a 23.98 timeline. I'm also editing with 24p footage that I removed the pulldown from in the same timeline. The two don't look the same. The 24pa footage is jerky. Will the footage look the same when I print to video?
Any idea of what I'm doing wrong?

  • HD WORKFLOW - HELP

I have edited a 45-minute HD project in FCP 5. The footage was 1080/60i 29.97 fps.
I am happy with the finished result but when I burn to DVD, the playback is not good. The footage is jerky and choppy in places.
The way I have done it at the moment is to export using compressor Best Quality 90min settings (advice I was given earlier).
I am sure this problem is caused by the fact that my DVDSP set up is for PAL 25fps but I cannot work a way around it.
FYI the sequence the footage has been edited in was set up for HD using Easy Set Up. The problem seems to come where we turn HD footage into SD for the DVD.
I would be really grateful if somebody could offer any suggestions to get this
thing to play well (on a PAL TV).
    Thanks in advance

    Hi David
Thanks for trying to help. Ok what I mean is DVDSP 3 is set up to burn PAL disks (that's where I am). When I encode using compressor, my presets burn PAL and give me no option to change the frame rate from 25fps.
I must admit I'm new to HD so this is all very frustrating and I am sure there is a way to work around this but I can't find it. It seems to me (with my limited knowledge!) that if the source material is in 29.97fps that encoding it at 25fps is going to cause problems.
    Help!
    Steve

I then monitored my GTX 570 usage and found 0% of the GPU was being utilised. I have a I7 2600k, 16GB RAM, GTX 570 GPU, 7200k hard drives an. d are using premiere pro CS5.5. Is this a problem with my GPU or PPro CS5.5
    Cheers
    Dave

    Hi Jim Simon
I tried what you told me to do, and you were right The accelerated export went around 3.5X faster than the software only. Six minutes of 1280x720 Mp4 footage took about 3.5 minutes to export to H.264 and the non acclerated took about 11 minutes.
I forgot to mention that I was also speeding up the footage through time-remapping, so maybe that was where I was having trouble with the jerky footage. I was under the impression that time remapping was also accelerated, maybe asking too much!
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards

  • Jerky Footage When exported from PPro

Hi everyone, I hope someone can PLEASE help with this.
Ive read loads online, but failed to find a solution!
Once again I turn to the Online Community for guidance and support.
Equipment: Sony NX5 on a Monopod.
    Captured: Full HQ 1920*1080 P 25fps
    Pc: Win 7 professional, i79477ok @ 3.50 Ghz, Graphics card: GeForce GTX-470. 12G ram.
Editing using PPro cs6. Timeline rendered, then exported (media encoder cs6) using my own present: h.264  720*576 25 fps, PAL, Progressive, Aspect: D1/DV PAL WIDESCREEN 16:9 (1.45.87) Bit rate 10, 14.
When I am zooming out, form an object, in camera its fine, once imported to PC, playing back using VLC is fine, but when exported, (using above) I see stutter on the same "zooming out". Project played on PC and to SD DVD and on both its "jerky"
What am I doing wrong, doing nuts here - Video attached below.
PS - I cant really see the "Jerky footage" on the below clip, but when I watch it on my monitor full screen you can see it then, trust me.

Yes I used a Manfrotto MN561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod.
I didnt use "pull back" I was merely "zooming out" and it seems as the footage is NOT zooming out fluid, it zooming out jerky.
Do you think my export is the issue?
Im currently trying, h.346, mpeg-dvd. mpeg, avi and QT... final destination is a DVD DISK.
    Any suggestions?

  • Jerky export with slowmo footage (60i to 23.98fps)

The footage that I've exported is a mixture of reg 24pa and slow mo (60i to 23.98fps). All clips run the same 24pa sequence, 23.98fps.
When I export (sorenson3) the reg. footage is fine but the slowmo footage duplicates frames causing the video to be jerky.
Export settings?? Thanks for any help.

No reason in particular. Can you recommend one outside of the obsolete bracket. In fcp it plays fine so it suggests the exporting stage is the prob.

  • Why is my AVCHD footage jerky in iMovie?

Can someone help me with the following problem:
I have filmed a number of videos with my Canon Vixia HF10 and when I import them into iMovie the footage get slightly jerky especially when panning or zooming.
In the setup of my camcorder the frame rate had been set to 60- by mistake.
    My camcorder uses NTSC.
At the import in iMovie the frame rate of the footage became set to NTSC 30.
When I later render my videos and burned them to a DVD and watched it on TV, I could see jerky panning.
What happens with the quality of the footage when the frame rate changes from NTSC 60- to NTSC 30 at the import to iMovie?
Why do I get jerky footage when panning?
I have a big number of videos with these problems from a two months vacation, so I would be very thankful if someone could give me some help.

    Thanks Appleman,
the info isn't under properties in IM 08, but in preferences it's set to PAL. I popped into an Apple store today, and they were very helpful - they let me download some sample footage into iMovie 11 - and it's the same, so a newer version of iMovie isn't the answer. They have kept the footage for analysis, and will get back to me. They suspect the codec in iMovie might not suit my camera precisely, and will look for a better one. This might mean using Final Cut Express, but I'll report back when I know more.

  • SAVING JERKY HAND HELD FOOTAGE

i have about an hour of very jerky hand held footage of a one time event
and nothing else to work with
any tips on smoothing things out?
is there a filter that would help?
    thanks

your specs say you have FCP 5.1.2 which does not have smoothcam. Keep in mind smoothcam will compromise the image quality since it rescales and repositions the clip. Furthermore if you are analyzing the full hour you're in for a looong haul since it takes considerable time to analyze the motion for smoothcam. Thankfully it's a backgorund process so you can still work in FCP while the smoothcam analyses the footage. Also if it's not one continuous shot but different shots of different scenes you may have to break up the clips and smoothcam analyze the motion for each clip since smoothcam analyses changes in pixles but if you have a shot with one scene that goes to a shot of another scene smoothcam analyze will be confused most likely resulting in undesired smoothcam analyzation. Basically smoothcam is ok for one slightly shaky scene but don't expect much if you want it to fix an entire one hour tape of various scenes. Not without a lot of tedious work breaking up the scenes and analyzing the smoothcam for each individual scene.

  • Jerky playback of XD Cam EX footage

One of our Macs is struggling to playback HD footage on the timeline and the Viewer (specifically XD Cam EX).
The footage plays fine in QT. Also it plays OK when we change the *Playback Video Quality* to MEDIUM, as you would expect I presume.
Also this problems isn't consistent, sometimes works fine when you switch the Mac on and then starts again at some point during the day.
Have tried more RAM, and the usual preference deletion.
Oddly, this is our newest Mac with, we have no problems with the other 3 older ones.

    Hi John,
I think you can add yourself to [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2628596&tstart=0] which has not been solved yet.
But since you have several mac's of which only one of them has the problem, you might be able to help finding the common denominator...
