Footage jumping/not playing in iMovie

I have imported 3 mins of footage from a Samsung D371W into iMovie with no problem. Popped it into the project and when I go to play it back it only plays about 2 or 3 seconds of it and the cursor changes to the colour wheel (beachball of death, as I like to call it). I've restarted the computer and the program but to no avail. This is the first time iMovie has done this...
I imported the footage to iTunes to see if it would playback there and it does, only it is jumpy and must be missing frames. It looks like a dodgy stop frame thing and that's not how I filmed it! I filmed continuously.
Anyone know why this is happening and how I can rectify this problem?
Also, when I try to reverse/use the rewind effect iMovie just adds 5 more copies of the original footage into the project window. None of it rewound. Surely this isn't right?
I'm running OSX 10.6.8, 1GB mem, 2.2 GHz proc. Recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard about 3 months ago. Had the computer for 4 years and am saving imovie footage straight to my external hardrive.
Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

I figured it out...you can't have a title menu/effect overlapping with a transition

  • Footage will not import to iMovie

    Hi,
    I have iMovie and I just purchased some stock footage online.
    The footage will not import into iMovie. It is in Quicktime format, and I tried to save it in ".mov" format, but it will not import that way either.
    I called the stock footage company and they said their footage works with iMovie, and to ask Mac for help.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    iMovie will not import any QuickTime file. It will only import files it can edit. MPEG1 is not a codec that iMovie can edit, so it will not import.
    Fortunately, there is a free App called MPEG Streamclip which will easily convert your clip to a format that iMovie can use.
    First download and install MPEG Streamclip. It is available here.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    Now, drag your clip into MPEG Streamclip. Hit the play button to make sure it plays.
    In MPEG Streamclip use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME...
    For Compression, choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
    Then click MAKE MOVIE
    You may want to deinterlace the footage of the resulting file does not look good. This can also be done in MPEG Streamclip. Let me know if you need help with that.
    In iMovie, you can import the resulting file by using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.
    The MPEG Streamclip process should create a new file. Your original MPEG1 file should still be intact. Just be sure that you do not give them both the same name.

  • Music and voice over does not play in iMovie

    Music and voice-over does not play in iMovie

    I am having the same problem with my iTunes. Support had me uninstall everything and reinstall iTunes again thinking it was corrupt. I did that and it worked for a couple of days. Now they say that cannot help since it is iTunes and not my iPhone and sent me here. Sometimes I can get it to work sporadically if I reboot my laptop a couple of times, but I have rebooted a few times already and nothing plays...no song previews, nothing from my library. iPods and iPhone play fine, it is isolated only to iTunes and is super frustrating. I get the same task bar up top as if it were going to play, but the play timer doesn't start. Help please!!!

  • Downgraded to quicktime 7.0.1 now itunes 6 music will not play in imovie HD

    I Downgraded to Quicktime 7.0.1 so my Imovie hd would play smoother. It worked great but now it won't play the music. It said I must authorize this computer to play it. So I type in my authorization and it says I'm good to go. Still no music plays

    Hi
    Lennart gave a very good link - only one BUT
    Make an Audio-CD - BUT - .aiff NOT .mp3 or other strange file format.
    Using .aiff 16-bit 48kHz audio works greately in iMovie and iDVD.

  • Mini-DV footage does not import into IMOVIE/ Camera not recognized

    Sony Mini DV tapes do not import footage using firewire. Camera is not recognized. I have done all the troubleshooting suggested. unplug, plug in, turn on, off, etc. I have bought new firewires and tried to import with many different mini-dv camcorders, sony, panasonic. It worked before, but not now.
    I teach in a multiple mac computer lab and have 20 computers, non of them import, although they did earlier. Student-use film lab. HELP!

    Hi Harm,
    Yes, that's exactly what I do with my EX3 footage too - ignore the XML error messages. That's a bit buggy in it's own right, well, not buggy but it should really recognise the EX folder/file structure and ignore the XML files - maybe one for a feature request!
    The 350 is a great camera - very much more sensitive and lower noise than the EX3.
    I still like the EX3 though, as it's small and light (relatively!) - the 350 is very light though in comparisson to other shoulder mount cameras. Nice low power consumption too
    Some things I miss from the EX3 - like the joystick menu button and the direct edit of parameters on the VF that the EX3 has. I also like the EX3 picure profile system over the 350 way of storing profiles (more similar to the 700 I believe).
    Cheers,
    Paul.

  • AVI files will not play in imovie

    I hardly know anything about computers... i have a camera and a laptop with imovie 08. apperently my camera takes movies in avi. format, and imovie won't import the files in... can anyone explain to me why this is and what i can do about it??????

    i have a camera and a laptop with imovie 08. apperently my camera takes movies in avi. format, and imovie won't import the files in... can anyone explain to me why this is and what i can do about it?
    AVI (like MOV) file containers are generic in nature. They can contain any valid combination of audio and video compression formats. Unfortunately, not all are editable in iMovie '08 and it iMovie '08 cannot edit it, the files are ignored. As always in such cases, the user should first examine a clips contents to try and determine the problem. This is most easily done by simply double-clicking the problem file in either iPhoto or the Finder to open it in the QT Player. Once opened, you can examine the audio anf vide comression formats by checking the "Inspector" window's "Format:" entry line. A common example for an AVI file might be Casio's use of M-JPEG video which is compatible with iMovie '08 and adaptive PCM (e.g., ADPCM) which is not "edit" compatible. While in this case only the audio content causes the problem and need be changed, many users elect to convert both audio and video content if they don't have QT Pro and/or are unsure how to convert/replace just the audio data. Specific work flows may depend on the codecs used to create the AVI which brings us back to why you need to determine the specific compression audio formats used.

  • I have files from a windows quicktime player. i am trying to get them to play on my mac quicktime and it doesn't work. i have used flip player to try and export my files to iMovie and it will export but will not play on iMovie. help!

    help! cannot figure this out at all

    What are the file types? Are you just trying to view these video files? To watch video files that Quicktime doesn't support use VLC media player.

  • How do I play an iMovie '11 project on a flash drive?

    I decided to save a few iMovie 11 projects and events on a USB flash drive, but the problem is, I just copied them to the drive and when I tried to open them in iMovie, they will not play. The clips from the events are saved on to the drive as Quicktime movie files, but the actual iMovie projects will not play in iMovie when I click on them. I have already deleted the projects from iMovie without realizing it and I'm afraid the projects are gone forever. Is there a way I can retreve them?

    Update: I have gotten the videos off of the drive and put them back into the iMovie projects folder. The music is still there and the transitions are present as well, but when I play the movie, the image shown says "source clip is missing" in the video, even though the image thumbnails are there in the "Project Library" screen Are the clips damaged in any way?

  • ITunes library songs not playing in my movie! Aaah!

    I read the FAQ for iMovie HD that says I need a more recent version of Quicktime... but I have QT 7 already installed! I figure it is because I have an older version of iMovie, NOT iMovie HD... but what can I do about it?
    I already have the songs imported and placed at the proper playhead... everything else about it should work... but they just don't play!

    Hi Crippler53, welcome to the forum!
    Are the songs you have imported ones that you purchased through the iTunes Music Store? They do not play in iMovie. Or maybe the track is muted - check the tick-box at the right hand end of it.

  • Footage will just not play in Premier Pro CS 5

    I am importing footage into Adobe Premier Pro CS 5 version on a Mac 10.6, but it doesn't matter what file format I convert it into or what sequence settings I try I cannot get the footage to play! It's recorded on a Sony Handycam HDR-XR200E in AVCHD format as an MTS file. I have converted it into .mov, avi and mpeg4 formats but still nothing seems to work! It's not a trial version of CS 5 so the AVCHD should not be a problem. I have also tried all the sequence settings and nada! The footage jumps for 2 seconds and then just freezes.
    Not sure how to proceed. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

    tamzynd, what are the specs of your mac? sounds like Premiere is choking on the footage.
    Can you play other type of vision (e.g. a plain old AVI file from a DV camera)?
    is your footage on the internal drive or on an external disk?

  • Trying to make a disc.img from an iMovie project get the mssage that some of the audio clips are not available. The clips still show as green bars in the project but do not play.

    I successfully made a disc.img and then burned a DVD of the project but found an error in a title. Went back to the project, corrected the error, and tried to create a new disc.img but got the message that some of the audio tracks were unavailable. They still show as green bars in the project but do not play. Tried deleting and reinstalling them with no success. They do play in iTunes and in the iMovie editing pane
    Thank you

    ... The goal is a ScrollPane that automatically wraps the text inside it. I've just about got it, but I have one thing that's not working. If I just put the JTextArea{s} in as the Editor, then you lose the any text that doesn't fit inside whatever the initial size was. Instead, I put the JTextAreas inside a JScrollPane which works fine, except that I still have to determine the size of the JScrollPane in advance. I would like to make each Editor/JScrollPane start out with just a single line of text and expand until it reaches a certain small number of lines.
    ... What am I missing?THE BASICS. See if this isn't what you are trying to do.
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JScrollPane;
    import javax.swing.JTextArea;
    public class Test
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        JTextArea ta = new JTextArea();

        ta.setWrapStyleWord(true);
        JScrollPane sp = new JScrollPane(ta);
        JFrame f = new JFrame();
        f.getContentPane().add(sp, "Center");
        f.setBounds(0, 0, 400, 300);
        f.setDefaultCloseOperation(f.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        f.setVisible(true);
    }OP, your code was too long and complicated for me to compile and run. However, aren't you forgetting the two simple methods <tt>JTextArea.setLineWrap()</tt> and <tt>JTextArea.setWrapStyleWord()</tt>? Furthermore, I absolutely see no need for you to extend SWING components for demonstration this simple -- that is, if I understand your problem correctly.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

    My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
    Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

    You shouldn't have to change your iTunes account to not have to purchase it twice.  If your devices are using different iTunes IDs, just purchase it on one device, then import it to your iTunes library by connecting the device to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Once in iTunes, you should be able to sync it to your other device (assuming both devices are syncing with the same iTunes library).  (And even if they were syncing with separate libraries, you could use Home Sharing to copy the app from one library to the other.)
    Or, am I missunderstanding something?
