Footage shot at 30fps needs to be converted/ edited into 24fps project

Hi,
I've already searched the postings and found a similar topic, but didn't quite solve dilemma.
I'm an Avid person myself, but am helping someone on FCP. He shot a feature at 24, apparently some footage was shot at 30fps by mistake. Is there a way to convert the footage? I guess the system won't let him capture at 24, so he captured this footage at 30 and rendered the clips but it looks like crap. I appreciate any help or suggestions anyone is willing to offer.
Thank you,

Well, this is a Final Cut Forum question actually, but it doesn't matter.Graeme Nattress has a standards converter that' ll do the job just fine.It should be here:

  • Convert widescreen into letterbox

I have footage shot in wide screen that I have edited in iMovie. Now I want to take the wide screen footage and use Final Cut Express to convert it into the letterbox format so I can play it on a 4:3 TV. What is the best way to do this converting?
Thank you so much for any help!

Make a 4:3 sequence in FCE and take the edited widescreen sequence and place it in the 4:3 sequence.

  • Convert RoboHelp for Word project to RoboHTML

I have a couple projects which are created RoboHelp for Word
in RH6. The projects now need to be converted to RoboHelp HTML
projects and Flash generated outputs. In conjunction with this I
    have the following questions:
    1) Can RH Word projects be opened in RoboHTML? If so, what
are the pros and cons and how is the conversion done?
    2) These independently projects will be linked/merged with a
master project which in RH HTML. Will this cause some inherent
    problems.
    3) I know I can generate a Flash based output from RoboHelp
for Word, however, how differently will (if at all) RH HTML treat
these files if called from within an RH HTML generated project.
    4) I will also need to generate Printed documentation in the
    end. Any impact on that?
Thank you in advance. A detailed answer would be greatly
    appreciated.

All those questions and in detail too. This is a forum, not a
    book shop. :-)
What we can do is give you some general guidance so that you
can experiment safely, then come back with specific questions.
You cannot open your RH for Word project in RH HTML. What you
have to do is import the underlying document(s) excluding the
footers as they contain RH for Word information that is not
relevant. Before you do anything, zip up the existing project and
keep it somewhere safe. Now you can use the project and blow it
apart without worrying. If anything goes wrong, you extract the zip
    copy and start over.
There's a topic on my site about importing ordinary Word
documents (as opposed to RH for Word doc files) and that will be a
    good starting point.
First get all the existing projects converted and running
properly as independent projects before you give any thought to
    merging.
When you are ready, then look at the topic on merging webhelp
that is on my site. Just adapt as necessary for FlashHelp. I think
you need at least RH6 to merge FlashHelp, maybe 7. Not sure without
checking. RH6 FlashHelp has some indexing problems as you will see
    in another thread.
RH generates files after which they go to development. What
do you mean by RH HTML treating those files? Do you mean will their
HTML be written differently? Almost certainly yes but why is that
an issue as long as they look how you want?
You will be able to generate printed documentation and that
is covered by yet another article on my site. Maybe now you are
getting the picture as to why nobody can provide the answer in
    detail on a forum.
You have a massive task ahead of you and I think it would be
foolhardy to start with your real projects. Starting from where you
are, I would create some small RH for Word projects and then go
down the path you have to. With small projects like that, you will
be able to understand what is going on and the issues. It's the
same reason why most driving schools don't start you off in a
    Ferrari!
Good luck. Glad its your problem. :-)

  • Converting HD footage....need to change pixel size??? I need help!

I have someone who shot an event for me and has edited it. He edits on a PC using Vegas. He shot the event in HD. (I haven't gone HD yet and really know nothing about it.)
The problem is getting his HD footage created in Vegas into my FCP. He sent me a test .m2t clip. Neither QT nor FCP would recognize it. I downloaded Streamclip to convert it, but although Streamclip recognized it, it would not open it. It said "Unsupported Format."
So now he has figured out how to export the footage as QT, but again he sent a test clip and it is letterboxed. He said I need to change the pixel size to 1.2121.
How in the world do I change the pixel size?????? I'm open to all suggestions here. Thanks....Nancy
    FCP 5.1.4
    QT 7.1.5

Squished 4:3 = anamorphic. If you set your sequence to anamorphic (checkbox in Sequence Settings), it should display your clips properly and not insist on rendering. As others have noted, the rest of the sequence settings need to match you clip properties to avoid rendering or RT. You can check those properties with a control-click on the clip in the browser. There is an item there for checking the clip's technical properties. Make your sequence settings match those clip properties.

  • Need to edit footage shot in anamorphic/Sqeeze with footage shot widescreen

Okay, so I had two DPs who were supposed to sync the footage specs and didn't. Now I have part of the project that was shot in anamorphic/squeeze on dvx100a and then part of the footage shot in regular widescreen 16x9 on dvx100a. I've been told those are two different pixel ratios... how do I do this?
Help. Under deadline for dvd distribution for this web series. Thanks!

Hey Shawn.. for sure, I am going to edit it in final cut but the first part of the project, the sequence setting had to be set to anamorphic. When I do that for the second half shot in widescreen, it distorts it.
I'm not sure how to solve that, since the output to digibeta has to be continuous. If I do a sequence in anamorphic, the widescreen distorts, and visa versa.
    Any suggestions for that?

  • Capturing footage shot in 24fps standard mode

I have footage shot on my Canon XL2 in 24fps standard mode. The question is what should my settings be on FCP to capture the footage properly and do I need to use cinema tools to convert the footage to 30fps after it is captured?

24P standard is fully compatible with (is) 29.97 NTSC footage, so the "normal" capture will work.
You may have misstated / mistyped? You do nothing to convert this to 30 fps. You CAN use Cinema Tools to generate true 24fps from this footage to edit on a 24fps (okay 23.98) timeline.

  • 60fps Footage rendered to 30fps for slow motion

I know that to render footage shot at 60fps down to 30fps so it's slow motion you can use Cinema Tools in Final Cut Pro. I've done so with a buddy's system. I, though, have FCE HD and am wondering if there is a solution for me that doesn't require dragging footage over to my friends studio. Since FCE doesn't include Cinema Tools, is there another piece of software I might use?

aha! I now see what you are talking about. If your camera shoots for instance 720p60 - as does not GH2. So yes - MovieEdit does a good job of this - if you are willing to use the extra disk space for another copy of the movie file.
If you don't want to use extra disk space, save a reference movie of your file (will be a tiny file) and use this method on it:
    http://mingletron.com/?p=222
an easier link to get Atom Inspector is here:
    http://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa/wo/5.1.17.2.1.3.3.1.0 .1.1.0.3.12.3.3.1
just change all the timescales of the ref movie that are not audio (ones that are not 48000 or 44100) to half their current value in all the mvhd and mdhd, then save and drag the ref movie into FCE. Sound will not work - it will be at the original speed and just end halfway through, but that's easy enough to fix - just unlink the sound, slow it down to 50%, chop off the excess and re-link.
To make a ref movie you need quicktime pro, or the free qtsync should also do it.

  • Edit footage shot from canon 60D

    Hi,
I am new to dslr video shooting. I want to edit the footage I shot with the canon 60D. I have some problems withe settings. I know that canon 60D shot in h264 so I have converted my footage to apple prores 422 (HQ)...I was wondering what setting should I set for the easy set up? I am not sure what should I set. I shot the footage in 1920 24p. And also, if i finish edting, do i just use the quicktime conversion and export the video to h264 again? or there is other setting? thanks!

    Hi -

That was overkill for the video produced by your camera. If you are using a recent edition of Final Cut Studio, you could have chosen Pro Res LT which would have given equal picture quality/FCP compatibility, in much less disk space.
I was wondering what setting should I set for the easy set up?
You don't need to worry about Easy Set Up as that is primarily designed to assist in the setup to capture material from tape.
Create a project, import you converted footage, and the first time you drag or edit an imported clip to your timeline, FCP will offer to match your sequence settings to your source footage. Say Yes and you should be ready to go.
And also, if i finish edting, do i just use the quicktime conversion and export the video to h264 again?
The answer to this depends on how you intend to use your edited video - are you planning on posting it on the web? The end use will dictate what format you convert your edited footage to.

  • Why does m4v need to be converted again

Hi. I converted a dvd movie I bought into the ipod format .m4v using another converting software program I have. I then imported it into the videos section of my itunes. It would not load into my ipod unless i convertd it again using the itunes conver for ipod option. Why does this need to be converted again for ipod if its already in a .m4v and is there any way i can fix this so when im originally converting my movie with my converting software I can eliminate this last step in itunes. It takes up to 5 hours to convert in itunes. thanks

I should also add that I am using a AVS video converter which has an IPod 5.5 converting option that makes my movies Highest available quality H.264, 30fps 640x480
There are more Ipod options availble but im using the Highest quality available one. Maybe I should be using one of these:
    ipod 5x- NTFS Standard quality H.264 29.97fps, 320X240
    ipod 5x- PAL standard quality H.264 24fps, 320X240
    ipod 5x- low quality H264., 20fps, 320X240
    ipod 5x - Best quality (MPEG4, 24fps, 320X240)
    ipod 5x- economy quality (MPEG4, 20fps, 176X144)
    ipod 5x- for tv output (MPEG4, 24fps, 512X384)

  • Best way to log footage shot on P2 Cards?

What is the best way to send footage shot on P2 cards to an offsite location for logging and transcribing? Any suggestions on converting the MXF files to MOV or other formats without having to buy a $600 program would be appreciated.

Import into FCP. String out on a timeline. Add the TIMECODE READER to all the clips so the loggers can SEE the timecode. Output to DVD via a capture card to a DVD Recorder.
    Or...
Import into FCP. String out on a timeline. Export a reference movie. Take into Compressor, add the TIMECODE READER in the FILTERS area, encode for DVD.
    Or...
Purchase Proxymill from www.imagineproducts.com. Have it make low res quicktime movies with burned in code of all the footage. Burn those files to a data DVD. Mind you, this means that every start/stop of the camera will be a separate file...just as they appear in FCP. But this is quick, runs in the background, and doesn't tie up an edit station.

  • TA25521 After editing a video clip that was shot in 60fps how do I convert that clip to 24fps for publishing

After editing a video clip in FCX that was shot in 60fps how do I convert that clip to 24fps for publishing?

There is only a limited amount of Compressor instruction available unless you purchase a subscription to something like Lynda.com or a tutorial from Ripple or Larry Jordan.
My advice to everyone who is interested in learning about Compressor is to read the first two chapters of the user manual – on basics and workflows. Those should provide enough of an understanding to cover the majority of things users need Compressor to accomplish. Of course there is plenty more for those who want to explore.
Here is a short write-up from Ken Stone on changing frame rates.
    Good luck.

  • 24fps footage in a 30fps sequence....oops!

    Hi Everyone,
Ok I did a rediculous mistake. I started editing footage shot on 24fps on a DVCPRO camera but in a 30fps sequence. Two questions:
    1. Can I change the sequence fps to match the footage? I was rendering the footage once I dropped it into the timeline and only realized after a while that I shouldn't have to do that and then discovered the problem.
    2. Will anything happen to the footage if I can't change the sequence fps? If so what is affected once I'm ready to output.

If the footage was shot 24pn, you do have a problem... I'd rebuild the sequence by keeping the old, matchframing each clip then place it in a DVCPROHD 23.98 sequence.
If the footage was shot 24p (no "n") then it's really 29.97 with a pulldown and you shouldn't have to render it in a sequence set to match...

  • How do you prepare FCP for footage shot on HD 1080i x 720?

    Hi,
I have HD footage shot on a JVC camera 1080i x 720 that was saved to Quicklime on a DVD disc. I dragged and dropped the footage onto the timeline and, of course, the image doesn't know if it wants to look like 16:9 of 4:3.
I switched anamorphic on and off but that only increased the warp look.
    1. Are there settings that need to be set before dropping the footage on the timeline?
    2. Are there tutorials on this subject?
    I'm using OS X 10.4.11 Mac 5
    Thanks for your time.

    No, I am not sure.
And the footage is a FCP file and not QuickTime as I originally thought. My bad
This is what I was told by the person that gave me the DVD. I did tell her to talk to the videographer and ask him various questions...what frame rate and aspect ratio was the footage shot at.
I'm still waiting for her response.
But I can not seem to get a normal visual with the footage I have as it appears on the timeline. Shouldn't I still be able to control or remedy that without any other information?
    Thanks for your time.

  • Using footage shot at 24fps

What type of settings do I need utilize when capturing and editing footage shot at 24fps?
    Anyone able tohelp
    Thanks
    Mike

    Well,
I shot the footage already. I shot on the Canon XL2. I was trying to figure out how to capture it. When I set the audio/visual settings and have the timeline set at 24fps then bring the footage in, it needs to be rendered. The only way I can capture and have the footage not need to be rendered is when I have both the capture settings and the sequence settings set at 29.97. I do not know if it will effect my footage or not if I have it playing on the timeline at 29.97.
    Thanks
