Footnote Anchors?

When I open a Word doc with footnotes in FrameMaker, sometimes the footnotes convert properly (shown in blue below), and sometimes they show up several characters to the left of what appears to be a footnote anchor (shown in red below). (I know, there's no such thing as a footnote anchor.) I can fix them, and I can try saving in various formats, but I'm wondering if anyone has direct experience with these anchors, and knows how to prevent them in the future.

Barb, the "wrong location" footnote in your example is at the end of a paragraph, while the good ones are "inside" text in a paragraph. I'd bet dollars to donuts that this is the key reason that some get converted properly while others don't.
As a test if you can go back to the same Word doc, try adding a word or two at the end of the "wrong" paragraph, being sure that your cursor is located after Word's footnote location anchor rather than inserting words just prior to the anchor, and try the import to FM again.  One strategy to be sure the cursor is located in the right position is to place it in the following paragraph and then use the left arrow key to move backward, doing just one click to get it into the previous paragraph, rather than just clicking at what Word might show as the end of the first paragraph, because that may be 'in front of" the footnote location.

  • [JS] Testing whether PageItem will printing anything

    There are a slew of attributes that determine whether a PageItem will actually result in something being printed on a page.  For example, the PageItem could be non-printing, or transparent, or have 0 thickness strokes, or no stroke or fill color, etc.  It may or may not have a drop shadow, halo, etc.
    Testing all of these attributes seems excessive.  Is there any reasonable way to determine whether a PageItem will actually result in any output if, for example, exportFile() is called on the page?
    I'm trying to output EPS files, but only if there are objects that will cause marks to be drawn on the page.  Otherwise, I get EPS files that fail in Distiller and report that no PDF was output because the EPS was empty.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    -pd

    A reasonable way? Like a boolean value? No -- ID doesn't check if you are actually printing something (the one exception being that blasted "Include blank pages" that's OFF by default!).
    Unfortunately, there are tons of reasons any given object will print, and you have to check them all before deciding it does not.
    non-printing, or transparent, or have 0 thickness strokes, or no stroke or fill color
    Each and every one of those 'or's should be and; each single one on its own can leave a mark on the page. (Not that entire list, but you know what I mean.)
    From your list, I'm missing at least the following:
    Is the layer it is on visible? (If not, you are done!)
    Is the layer set to 'Nonprinting'? (Ditto.)
    Does the object contain text? Have to check its attributes -- fill, stroke. If it contains footnotes, anchored objects, tables: if the 'main' text is invisible, check all of these.
    Does it contain any other objects? Have to check their attributes as well -- recursively! Fortunately, the very first positive "Does print" hit is definitive for all objects higher up in the chain. Check allPageItems -- this superclass should cover all possibilites, except (I think) Buttons.
    How bad do you consider the Distiller error? It might be easier to handle that gracefully instead.
    Another way would be to cheat, and put something paper coloured on every page

  • Consecutive footnotes within anchored objects

    I am working on a long indesign document with footnotes and anchored objects. The anchored objects have both text and graphics within them and some of them have footnotes as well. I’m having trouble figuring out how to make the footnotes within the anchored objects number consecutively with the rest of the footnotes within the text. Can anyone help?

    This is a good reason to add voices to request that footnote numbers be accessible to cross-references, so that cross-references to the hidden footnotes update without manual effort.

  • Foot notes and Anchored Objects...

    So from what I can tell, an anchored object set to the bottom of the page, column, margin etc will all sit nice and smugly over footnotes!
    ( I would have thought using the column for the y axis would not count the footnote portion)
    Anyhow, has anyone come up with a solution for this?

    Unfortunately, no. If the anchor is inserted at the top of the paragraph (where I want the top of the image to be), the image won't flow to the next text block when any other part of the image (i.e., any part of the image that is not on the first line where the anchor is) is beyond the end of its text block.
    Here is how I want the page to look:
    Here, the graphic is not placed inline but sits over the text with textwrap set.
    But rather than have all my objects placed over text, I want them inline. If I place the anchor anywhere below the first line of text, (again, the line where I want the top of the image to be), text wrap won't function above the anchor point regardless of how high I move the image:
    If I place the graphic in its own paragraph above the first line of the paragraph, the result works well as long as the text preceding the anchor doesn't flow any further (i.e., no additional text is added). But as text is added and once the line holding the bottom of the photo flows to a new text block, one of two problems arises. If "Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries" is checked the graphic moves up:
    If "Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries" is unchecked, the graphic begins to bleed out of the text box:
    I can't believe there isn't a simple (or even complex) solution to this problem...

  • Looking for a script to connect bodytext to footnote and cross-references

    Hi,
    Need to do the following:
    I was provided with separate (tagged-text) files: bodytext, (foot)notes and cross-references. Now I am looking for a solution (script?) that can do the following:
    to restore the connection between the body-text, the footnotes and te cross-references after placing these in a document in Indesign.
    The cross-references should appear (in anchored text-frames) in the margin and the notes in a separate frame at the bottom of the page. If possible in the same way as footnotes in Indesign appear, but in a separate frame to be able to do some more formatting than native footnotes would accept.
    I have tested the plugin: Side Heads from InTools, and tis works well with Indesign files tthat contain footnotes. But this doesn't work with separately placed footnotes from a tagged-text-file, as they re not knotted together.
    I can't do any scripting myself.
    I would appreciate any help, and I am looking forward to your response...
    Regards,

    The first thing to do is:
    regexp "match regexp = ([0-9]+)" $_cli_result match count
    if $count eq 0
    exit 0
    end
    The second is a bit more challenging.  I think this will work:
    cli command "show call active voice br"
    foreach line $_cli_result "\n"
    regexp "^([0-9a-zA-Z]+) : " $line match callid
    if $_regexp_result eq 1
      continue
    end
    regexp "^dur 1d" $line
    if $_regexp_result eq 1
      cli command "show call active voice br | section $callid"
      syslog msg "$_cli_result"
    end
    end

  • Using footnote markers in a GREP search

    In a 300 page document, with hundreds of footnotes, I want to insert thin spaces between single endquotes and footnote markers. The easiest way seemed a GREP search and repace. I search for (\’)(~F) and replace it with $1~<$2. The result is ’ ’ (endquote-thin space-endquote). When I try to replace AB to A-thin space-B in the same way, the result is right. So what's going wrong? (I also tried ~] for the endquote.)
    (By the way, I have a workarround, but I'd like to understand how GREP searches work.)

    Footnotes aren't really a part of the semi-official GREP definitions, and I imagine the Adobe programmers had to fix a couple of workarounds to make them work at all. They are not simply single characters (quotes, spaces, and possibly text variables are) but "contain" lots of other information, just like anchored objects do. That could be the reason they don't Play Nice with regular GREP operations.
    In this particular case, you can work around it searcing for but not replacing the footnote marker code. Look for
    (\')(?=~F)
    and replace with
    $1~<
    The combo (?=~F) will find but not include the footnote code, and thus nicely circumvent the problem.

  • Footnote woes

    When using span columns on a paragraph with a footnote, Indesign places the footnote under that paragraph instead of at the bottom of the page with the other footnotes. Is there a way to change this? Footnotes in Indesign can really do with some improvements, Adobe!

    I'm imagining what you have, and I think about a two-column page with footnotes at the bottom of both columns. Then, you have a paragraph that spans columns, and all of the footnotes before the span show up above the span. If there is a way around this without having to do it manually, I don't know how it would be done. Even if you split the story into three text frames (two-column at the top and bottom, one-column in the middle), the footnotes before the split will still be above the split, instead of at the bottom.
    The only thing I can think of is to have one two-column text frame, and a second (just for the span) that has text wrap to push the text away from both columns. You could either place it directly on the page or inline with the text, but you will have to keep an eye on it either way if the text reflows. As a stand-alone object, it might not be in the place where the text makes sense if the main text moves (and you would have to move it manually), and if you place it inline and it's anchor position moves to the right column, it will hang off the side of the page, and then you would have to move the anchor.
    But, with hope, you will get a better answer from someone else.

  • Back Button with Anchor Link in Webview?

    I use UIWebView (in a view controller) to display html pages stored locally on the device. This web view is the "leaf" view from a series of table views using a navigation controller that provides the appropriately-labeled "back" buttons to the table hierarchy tree.
    The problem is that in some of these html pages, I have anchor links to a footnotes html page also residing on the device, and then that web page does appear in the web view but I don't know how to go "back" to the previous web page leaf. The navigation bar of course shows a back button that goes back to one of the table views and not to the preceding web page, the origin of the linked web page.
    So, from a UI and programming prospective, how do I change the navigation back button label to say "Back" (instead of the previous table view) and have it when clicked show the previous web page and not the previous table view?
    Is there where I might use UIWebView delegate functions? But how do I get the navigation button to change its functionality?
    Thanks for any help.

    Is there where I might use UIWebView delegate functions? But how do I get the navigation button to change its functionality?
    You can use the delegate functions to intercept each nav request...
    - (BOOL)webView:(UIWebView *)webView shouldStartLoadWithRequest:(NSURLRequest *)request navigationType:(UIWebViewNavigationType)navigationType{
    or you can be told when new data was navigated to:
    - (void)webViewDidFinishLoad:(UIWebView *)webView{
    you can change the Nav bar's left button to be a custom view:
    UIBarButtonItem *leftButton = [[[UIBarButtonItem alloc]
    initWithTitle:NSLocalizedString(@"Back", @"")
    style:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered
    target:self
    action:@selector(goBack:)] autorelease];
    self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = leftButton;
    You need to provide a function to perform the goBack.
    hope this helps

  • Adding footnotes in Dreamweaver 2004

    Please could someone help a Silver Surfer - I wish to include numbers in a text document i.e. (1)- (2) and link them to an explanatory footnote/s at the bottom of the finished document. By this I mean clicking (1) in the text links to Footnote (1) at the bottom of the page. I am up to speed with ordinary hyperlinks but am unable to fathom how to do this. I would be grateful for any help.

    BL ::
    I must be terribly dim-witted.
        No, just learning something new! ;)
    BL ::
    Have read and re-read how to use Named Anchors I am just unable to get a connection. I have a document containing footnotes i.e.(1)in the document test which when clicked will bring up the footnote 1.School Farm - (2) in the text which will bring up footnote 2.Rectory Farm and so on.
        I know; those instructions are sometimes very dense to read; bad instructional designers. Ok; When you create named anchors, these are special types of links that connect to locations inside your own document. These are not external links such as
    a href (web link) and
    mailto: (email link). Named anchors are actually
    labels, and have the HTML denotation
    "«a name="your_anchor_label"»«/a»".
    Use your Code View to see the HTML.     If I read you correctly, you seem to be putting a literal hash (#) character in your little naming box. Don't do that. Maybe that is one thing that got confused when you read the help section. Hash marks are (in HTML
    coding
    ) ONLY for the reference TO the named anchor, which is "the link", but actually the link
    target. The Named Anchor is merely the target location
    in the HTML code itself that "marks" the reference endpoint, i.e., the footnote/endnote target. That's what happens when you choose Insert>Named Anchor. You name the anchor, not the originating activating hyperlink. Better?
    To connect the dots you have to keep track of two locations:
    1. your referencing link
    pointer, i.e.    School Farm
    1,
    and
    2. its anchor
    ed linkage location, i.e. the footnote itself, or
    1. Rectory Farm [& etc].
        Click at the beginning of the paragraph of your
    footnote and choose Insert>Named Anchor from the Insert menu. You must then type in a name that has
    no spaces. None. You could just as well name it rectoryfarm_note or RectoryFarm if you so wished. Just keep track of the upper/lowercase spellings.
        No.2 above is the named anchor, the "marker label" in your document where the footnote actually is.     No.1 above
    calls forth the named anchor; these have to be connected in the HTML code. To do that, the easy way is to
    select your anchor reference [your superscript numeral, usually] and type in #YourAnchorName into the link field in the Properties panel/inspector.
        In the Properties Inspector link field, you must use and/or see the # (hash) symbol in front of the
    exact spelling (upper/lower case sensitive) you have given your named anchor. In this case, it would be #RectoryFarm or whatever.
        The # ONLY goes on the in-text footnote marker
    link in the Properties Inspector link field, not in the naming of the Named Anchor.
        Test it in your web browser; the link will (should) jump to your footnote. (To jump
    back, you have to also add a reverse of the process, and make up a named anchor connection to your in-text footnote location, too. Ugh. Gets more complicated,....    :) )
        Here is a bit of example code to illustrate.
    =========
    ... that denote neobaroque art.<*sup><*b>
    ><*a href="#note_003">3<*/a><*/b><*/sup>
    «--- the superscripted numeral
    <*b><*
    a name="note_003"><*/a>18 <*/b> Jacqueline Barnitz,
    <*i>Twentieth-century art of Latin America<*/i>, 1st ed. (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2001), p.202 <*/b>
    this is the footnote with the Named Anchor! (a name="note_003"; leave in the quote marks)
    ==========
        NOTE: Where ever you see an asterisk, I have had to insert that to force Adobe to show you code. Leave out the asterisk! (Also, named anchors are 'hidden' from view in the Dreamweaver editing window; you need to turn on 'Show Invisible Elements' in the View>Visual Aids menu. Then you will be shown a cute little yellow anchor symbol/signal where your named anchors are located within your text. It will not show the referencing link, though. That shows up as blue and underlined.)
    Hope this is a bit clearer.

  • Another problem: anchor for bottom page doesn't work as expected

    Hey there again,
    I have another small problem that i am facing. I would like to put some objects on the bottom of my my page, not the footnote. So i simply choose to anchor the object to the bottom middle by clicking the reprentative point in the menue. I expected that now the object that i want 100px above the bottom of the "screen" would be anchored but instead it simply disappears, i cant find it in the preview. Not even all the way down at the footnote. so how exactly can I put an object at the bottom of the screen so it will stay there no matter if i scroll down?
    I hope this text is not to confusing, if there are any questions about the problem please don't hesitate to ask!
    All the best,
    Lucas

    Hey there Mdermez,
    i tried both ways and they result in the same problem that i alrady have, that the one object that i fix to one certain postion on the page will appear differrent on different screens. I am working with two different sized screens and on one (the bigger one) it will simply be where i want it just as you explained but on the smaller one it will be to far down the page to be visible. When i fix it to the small screen to ebject will hover in the middle of the big screen. so what i am trying to archiev is that the object will stay at the bottom of the screen no matter what the screen size is so in fact i cant fix it to a certain position but anchor it to the bottom of the screen. Is this possible?

  • Footnotes and DDA accessible pdfs

    I have been trying to make footnotes produce in InDesign readable, triggered by the footnote number within the text to no avail. These footnotes are not auto generated as I need full page width footnotes in a two column grid so are just paragraphs.
    I have tried:
    1     Tagging the paragraph footnote number as 'figure' with Alt text of the footnote copy.
    2     Inserting the number into an anchored text box tagging as above.
    3     Inserting the number as a picture into an anchored object box tagging as above.
    Help please. Should one of these work or is there a work around?

    petedenly wrote:
    Many thanks Peter for this, I think that the same problem exists with cross-references as well!
    Let me try and explain.
    What I have been asked to do is produce reports that can also be read by a screen reader for non-sighted people.
    The access tags available in InDesign generally work well with one or two exceptions - this being one of them.
    When reading a paragraph with a footnote number in it, the reader just reads the text-number-text ok and then reads the footnotes at the bottom of the page as paragraphs following the rest of the page text.
    What really needs to happen is that when the screen reader reaches a footnote number in a paragraph it should then read the footnote text before continuing with the rest of the paragraph.
    Hence why I have tried inserting the footnote text as Alt = 'footnote text' in the position of the footnote number in the paragraph.
    I hope that explains the problem better?
    Any solutions?
    Regards
    Pete Denly
    Hi, Pete:
    You are describing changing the reading order within the PDF. I don't know if it's possible to make this happen automatically in InDesign.
    A workaround would be to create cross-references to the footnote paragraphs immediately following the footnote reference numbers in the main text, so the screen reader sees the footnote text right after the reference. If you mark these "captured" paragraphs with a condition, you can hide or show them to create a normal PDF, and one for screen readers.
    To avoid readers processing the footnotes, you can conditionalize, and hide their condition when you show their captured text in the cross-references. You can cross-reference to hidden conditional text!
    Turning the conditions on and off will reflow your document significantly. I'm assuming that page layout isn't an important concern for screen-read documents.
    When hiding footnotes, the footnote separator line remains. To remove it, you'd need to turn off Rule Above in the Footnote Options dialog box.
    To manage making these variations of final output, you can create one template document for each variation. In this example, the template document for screen readers should have the footnote property of no rule above, and condition settings that display the cross-references that capture the footnotes in text, while hiding the footnotes. The template document for standard output should have the footnote property rule above set on (if you want it), and the condition settings that hide the cross-references and display the footnotes. The template documents don't need any content or layout. To bring the template document properties into your main document you can use Load Conditions and Sets from the Conditional Text panel menu. To do this for multiple files at once, create a book file for each output variation, add the appropriate template file and the rest of the document files to the book, choose the properties you want to load from Synchronize Options on the Book panel menu, then synchronize the book using the template file as the style source.
    Because InDesign  can't load or synchronize footnote settings across documents - you have to do it manually - it might be more convenient to drag pages from the master document (the one that contains all conditions showing, and footnote rule above on) into each template document, where the condition and footnote settings of the receiving document will apply to the incoming pages.

  • Problems importing Word Doc footnotes/endnotes into Dreamweaver CS4

    I am having a problem importing a Word doc with footnotes/endnotes into Dreamweaver. When I do the import (or a copy and paste) I get the references without the actual number for the endnotes in superscript!
    I currently have Dreamweaver CS4 (though have also experienced this issue with Dreamweaver 8)
    I am currently using Word 2007 (but experienced this same problem with earlier versions of Word).
    The document has a standard sort of endnote. In the middle of the text there is a number in superscript that refers to a note at the end. When I do an import I get the nice set of back and forth references with anchors and links but missing the number! Let me copy and paste an example:
    Here is the text I have:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,[i] with the UK
    [i] DFID (2010) DFID in 2009-10.
    Now here is the HTML I get when I import:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,<a href="#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title="" id="_ednref1"> </a> with the  UK
    And as an endnote:
    <div id="edn1">
        <p><a href="#_ednref1" name="_edn1" title="" id="_edn1"> </a> DFID (2010) <em>DFID in 2009-10</em>.</p>
      </div>
      <div id="edn2">
    What I really need is:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,<a href="#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title="" id="_ednref1">1</a> with the  UK
    And as an endnote:
    <div id="edn1"><p><a href="#_ednref1" name="_edn1" title="" id="_edn1">1</a> DFID (2010) <em>DFID in 2009-10</em>.</p>
      </div>  <div id="edn2">
    Does anyone know why these superscript numbers are missing? And how I can get Dreamweaver to put them in. I have long documents with 50 or more footnotes and would hate to have to redo this by hand!

    The problem is that some of the material in the endnote/footnote is explanatory in nature rather than just a reference or citation. So I need a way to include explanatory text and don't want to put multiple sentences in ( ) in the middle of the text.
    I would have to say clearly someone at Adobe did think conversion of endnotes/footnotes is a worthwhile endeavour, because Dreamweaver is designed to do it! You can see clearly from the code snippet that they programmed Dreamweaver to do an import with a very nice set of back and forth anchor references. Just somehow the actual reference numbers don't show up. In fact the HTML code for this provided by Dreamweaver is very clean and nice (contradicting bemdesign's assertion that you can not turn a word doc into a good HTML doc), with the exception of the missing number references!
    Is there a setting somewhere that I might need to play with to get this to work better?? Or something I need to do with the Word doc text before I do an import? Any other work around.

  • I need help with designing a page with footnotes

    I would like to place a one or two word translation in a narrow column alongside a main text. There are many translations in this text, about one every two lines. The footnote function simply creates a long list at the bottom of the page. This creates some design challanges. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to design a page where these one or two word translations appear in a column next to the text or somewhere other than a single column list at the bottom of the page. Thank you!

    I used an anchored object to create my sidebars, and use an object style for the text box. The settings below (ignore the X and Y offset will let it go from the left to the right if there's a lot of page shifting, and it will keep it on the page. It'll take some fiddling around to get it to work the way you want. The only thing I need to do is type in the width of the anchored box. Everything else is automated.
