Footnotes in multicolumn formats CS3

I am trying to layout a publication that is set in 2 columns and has a big amount of footnotes. The problem I cannot figure out is that footnotes are placed at the bottom of each column in uneven blocks. What I would like to achieve is the footnotes to appear in 2 even legs of text. I do not see any option in the footnote layout preferences that should help determine this
Does anyone know of a plug in or script that addresses this issue?

Hi Dominic, Ken,
I know you've never used this type of layout, but it's actually very
common in certain kinds of publications. Especially in Hebrew scholarly
works, the footnotes are very often the main thrust of the text and they
really don't look very good when they are below their corresponding columns.
Very often these "footnotes" have some kind of header going over both
columns.
Finding the connection between the texts is really not that big a deal.
People reading these kinds of publications are very used to finding
corresponding texts in very complicated layouts.
There are manuscripts which have more than 10-15 different texts all
referencing each other on the same page...

  • Footnote/Endnote Nightmare in CS3

    I can't believe this isn't fixed in CS3! !
    I import a Word file with footnotes at the end of each chapter, but they import into InDesign as one running stream of footnotes without regard to chapters and then are placed at the end of my document as Endnotes. Is there no way around this once the file is imported, or do I have to start all over with a separate file for each chapter?

    >I import a Word file with footnotes at the end of each chapter
    Then they're endnotes, not footnotes, and ID doesn't have native support for endnotes. If you want endnotes, you'll have to fake them and manually place them (or use a script).

  • Panoramas and dicom file format CS3

    I just stitched together about 20 photos to make a panorama and Photoshop will only save the file as tif, raw or Dicom. I want to save it as a jpeg. any advice?
    Also does anyone know if there is a limit to how many photos I can merge in photomerge?
    thanks

    I've used up to about 30 high-res photos, I suppose. But it seems that the answer would be best served by another question: How much RAM, free drive space, and time do you have?

  • Half of my doc's citations won't show up on the bottom of the page as footnotes, while the other half is fine.

    Hello all,
    I'm using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011. I've been working on a document with lots of citations, and it's the weirdest thing, but footnotes for citations 66 - 126 won't appear at the bottom of the page. All others (1-66, 126 and above) appear as they should,
    on the bottom of the page where the data is located. So in other words, there are about four pages in my word doc that show
    no footnotes, even though when I add a citation to the content, the superscript numerals show up. It's like the footnotes are hidden or something, but I just can't figure out how to get them to show.
    Any and all help is so appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi,
    Please check the settings of your paragraphs around the footnote reference using
    Format > Paragraph > Line and page breaks: Keep with next, Keep lines together, Widow/Orphan control. Disable those that seem redundant.

  • Footnote numbering query

    Hi I am working on InDesign CS3 (mac) I am setting a new book which has extracts from other journals and books that contain footnotes, and as the extracts are all from legal publications the footnotes need to be renumbered exactly as they are in their original state i.e. there could be three paragraphs from a law journal and the footnotes in those three paragraphs start numbering at 15 and end on 27, then the next extract which starts on the same page starts on 18 and ends on 23 for example my question is can this be done with automatic footnotes I know it would be fine if each extract started on a new page I could create a book and start renumbering each section but I can't seem to find a way to start renumbering from multiple starting numbers on one page?!!!!
    I have a ten year old program called 3b2 which does do it so surely ID CS3 can?
    Any suggestions
    Thanks in advance :)

    Hi
    Yes it cost us almost ten times what the CS3 package cost us! and they have now been bought by an American company called Arbortext and I think is slowly being phased out, it has served us well and has been the back bone of our company for many years but what with online publications becoming ever more popular and the function of being able to export back in to MSWord whilst keeping the automatic footnotes and styles ID CS3/4 is by far way ahead. But I am still impressed with 3b2 I like the fact you can get in to the guts of the coding and manipulate to great lengths to get your desired result, thanks so much for your reply I thought that would be the case in regards to my query, I have heard through the grape vine that the footnote options for CS4 have not changed one bit since CS3 and also you still can't have automatic footnotes within tables! Still, we can't have it all :)
    Thanks again

  • LEGAL PLEADINGS IN IPAD - Formatting mucked up!!!!!!

    I sent a legal pleading to pages. It had footnotes and legal formatting.
    Pages deleted the footnotes and completely mucked up the formatting, spacing, indentations.
    C'MON Apple...you can do better. Would be willing to pay more money for an app that does not mess up a legal pleading. The ipad screams out for this. Many lawyers would use this app with their ipad.
    PLEASE FIX.

    NONE of the apps on the iPad preserve complex Word formatting. I have every major app (Documents to Go, Office Squared, Quickoffice, Pages) that purport to convert Word docs and edit/work with them. None of them retain 100% of the formatting. The only way to get a 100% accurate reproduction of such docs is to first convert them to PDF on your laptop and then transfer them onto your iPad via Dropbox, or a similar cloud/transfer app.
    If you then want to highlight or annotate your PDF version of these docs, use iAnnotate or ReaddleDocs. Works great.

  • Mac format

    Mac format & CS3–Design Standard. I have the disks. I don’t want to upgrade.
    Problems with Illustrator:
    • For a long time I have not be able to change the keyboard shortcuts.
    • For a short amt. of time I have not been able to select a guide line once I place it in a file.
    • For 2 or 3 days I have not been able to move an object with my arrow keys with or without the Shift key. Yet the cursor WILL move in a few lines of text–so I know they work.
    I wonder if reinstalling will solve these problems but I’m nervous that I will have problems during the installation with the number of times that I’ve installed.
    I do have an account number.

    mini super,
    You may try the easier ones before 6) on the list.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Footnotes problem

    Hi,
    I have a problem formation my footnotes with StarWriter 7 (also 6).
    Formating footnotes has the <b>Before</b> and <b>After</b> option. That works fine, Ill see the text I need, &#91; &#93;, in front and behind.
    But I need this format also within the document. Anyone know how to do it?
    Yes I know, manually it is possible, but not a good idea coz auto numbering wont work in that case.
    Thanks,
    Tazmania

    Hiya :)
    Footnotes can be formatted under "Tools - Footnotes" in a StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; Writer text document. Here, on the "Footnotes" tab page, it is possible to apply square brackets to the AutoNumbering in the "Before" and "After" fields, for example. This will allow the footnote number to appear between brackets before the content of the footnote (e.g., &#91;1&#93; ...).
    This formatting option is intended to be applied only to the footnote content, and not to the text on the page. This feature has been implemented in StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; so that the footnote and its content can be differentiated from the footnote within the text, if desired.
    However, if square brackets or other characters should be added to the footnotes within the text itself, this can be done so manually. The manually entered characters are formatted as text and will not influence the automatic numbering of the footnotes whatsoever.
    We appreciate your input and have forwarded this information to the StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; Development team for a possible feature enhancement in one of the future versions.

  • Change "Multicolumn" into "Film Script" in Adobe Story Free?

    I've started a script in the "Multicolumn" format, but found that the scene outline feature is not available for that format (among other features, for some odd reason) and want to convert the work that I've done so far within (the free version of) Story. Is there a way to simply convert one into the other, maintaining all of the formatting (character/scene/dialogue/etc.) that's already been done? If not, is there a different file format I could save/export the existing document to and then re-import it to that new Film Script format?
    I'm working in Story in Safari on a Mac.

    Try exporting the document as '.astx' and then importing it back.
    It will get imported as film script.

  • Find open and close smart quotes

    Dear scripter,
    Here I am trying find whether all the open double smart quotes(") are closed with close double smart quotes("). Here is my small work to find how many open and close quotes.
    myopenqu=app.activeDocument.search("^{", false, false, "^{");
    myclosequ=app.activeDocument.search("^}", false, false, "^}");
    myopenqulength = myopenqu.length;
    myclosequlength = myclosequ.length;
    if(myopenqulength!=myclosequlength)
    alert("Quotes not matched\n"+ myopenqulength +" Open quotes found\n" + myclosequlength +" Close quotes found")
    It works well, the script just alert if I have 25 open quotes and 23 close quotes
    Quotes not matched
    25 Open quotes found
    23 close quotes found
    Now I want to find the quote set where the 24,25th set close quotes are missing?
    Is there any way to find the misisng quotes
    Thanks in advance
    regards

    vpublish.net

    You'd have to look for unmatched quotes, in this case two cases of two open quotes without an intervening closed quote. This is difficult to script in CS2 because it doesn't have GREP natively and because of footnote problems. In CS3/4 it should be possible. But even then it will work only if you don't have quotes within quotes.

    b comment from me!
    I can't see where the problem is coming from here :-{ (some more of your) patient help and explanations will be appreciated. While I'm waiting, I'll try replacing [TEXT] as the content for a tableCell with a new element.

    Niels,
    To elaborate a bit on Van's comment, formatting set for ancestors is not inherited by tables or by footnotes. FrameMaker assumes that these constructs are formatted differently than text in a "regular" flow. Furthermore, the default formatting for tables and footnotes differs from that for body paragraphs. If your EDD has no relevant format rules:
    Paragraph format Body applies to body paragraphs.
    The paragraph format your document uses for footnotes (or table footnotes) is used for footnotes. Use Format > Document > Footnote Properties to inspect or change the paragraph tag.
    The table format determines the paragraph format used for any table title and the cells in the table. In particular, when the table format was created or last updated, it stores the paragraph format used for any table title and in each column of the first row of whichever of the three parts of the table (heading, body, footing) exist. The stored paragraph format applies to the table title, and the paragraph format stored in the first column of the row in the relevant table part applies to all cells in that part of the table.

  • Unable to Insert Footnote in Indesign CS3

    We are using InDesign CS3 and that file has lot of footnotes. InDesign CS3 quits automatically when we click the option "Insert Footnote" in Indesign CS3. Not even insert one footnote on this chapter.
    Insert Footnote option will work in New document, but the same option doesn't work in the actual InDesign document. I tried to converted the InDesign file as .INX format and then opened it again in InDesign CS3. Eventhough the Footnote option does not work. Please help me to solve this issue.

    Does it quit when you try to insert a footnote *anywhere* in that document? Or just in the one spot where you want the footnote?
    I've seen ID react badly (though not quit) to footnotes in certain places, somewhere that causes it to have pagination difficulty, like if adding a footnote would cause a paragraph to break, but that paragraph is not allowed to break.
    What happens when you try to insert a footnote in a totally different place?
