Footnotes problems

Hello,
I am having problems dealing with footnotes.
So when I place text from a word document in Indesign I have the footnotes box ticked so that I get them with text in the report.
I need to be able to cut the footnotes out of the text box where I placed the text from word and paste it in a new text box. When I do so, it leaves a short line that I can not delete or even reach!
Any ideas how I can control my footnotes better when placing text from a word document to indesign.
Thank you

I have a similar task:
I have a 2 column layout, but the client wants a single column layout.
What I did, I imported the DOC with its footnotes. Then I used a script (which is available from Peter Kahrel — www.kahrel.plus.com) Footnote to Endnote.
Then I took the end of the story string, shortened/deleted the last frame and started to draw text frames from the bottom linked page by page and with text wrap I hindered overlapping text.
Another method would be to use the script Footnote to Text on the same source as the script above.

    This is another example. A footnote between ordinary text lines. I fixed the problem by resetting the paragraph style to base. But I don't know the source of the problem.

  • CS3 Footnote problems

    Hi guys.
    Got a problem with footnotes in my document. I want to renumber my footnotes halfway through the document but can't get anything to work. I've tried creating a new section and renumbering from there, but it renumbers footnotes in all sections. :s HELP!
    Thanks

    Go to Type>Document Footnote Options and choose to restart numbering every section.
    If you want different numbering you'll have to split the document in two, because Document Footnote Options are for the entire document.
    It really needs an overhaul, hasn't been updated in years.

  • Oh, the glories of footnote problems...

    Hello all. I am having a problem with footnotes.
    The footnotes were running through the entire document without a problem. The document is about 150 pages long, and the footnotes need to be numbered continuously throughout the document. I must have done SOMETHING when I saved, because now the footnotes are re-numbering from 1 for each chapter. I have not split the book into chapters or sections. Any help? How do I fix this? Way to go, third day at my new job!

    Chryss,
    Go to the document's footnote options (Type > Document Footnote Options), where you'll find a settin "Restart numbering every" page, spread, or section. Maybe this got checked accidentally. Or maybe it was checked and some edit triggered the setting (add sections, maybe).

  • Strange footnote problem

    One of the teams I support created an four-color academic book in InDesign that has 624 pages. It is broken into 44 chapters, each containing 20-50 footnotes. The book went through the editorial process and was approved. The final file was made into a PDF that went to the printer and 3,000 hard back copies were made. 20-30% of the footnotes in the printed book have problems. Footnotes start re-numbering in the middle of a chapter, some footnotes are simply missing, and numbers are skipped.
    I pulled a server backup of the file from the week before and the week after it went to press (the file was unchanged and was timestamped with the same time and date on both files). The InDesign file is correct in both instances. The archived PDF file that was made is definitely wrong. I do not really believe this is a PDF problem, but believe that something happened to the InDesign document that messed up the footnotes. DIstiller can drop items when PDF'ing, but it can't re-number footnotes… Section starts in InDesign are right where they should be for each chapter. EVERYTHING in the InDesign file looks right.
    We re-PDF'ed the file on the same Mac using the archived file and the footnotes came out correctly. Not a single error. We used the same file from which the original PDFs were made.
    The Mac was running OS 10.6.6 and InDesign CS5 7.0.3 at the time the PDFs were originally made. The file was printed to postscript and PDF'ed using Distiller 8.1.0. (Not sure why he did that, because he had Acrobat Pro with Distiller 9 on his Mac… but that is a different subject.)
    We have shredded the defective books and re-created the PDF files and the book is re-printed and shipping. So, this is over.
    However, I want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
    Any ideas?

    Wow, Kevin. That sucks.
    I think you have a pretty clear business case to talk to Adobe at. Since there was some clear financial cost here, and clearly some budget available, its probably appropriate to engage Adobe support and your sales folks, if you have any. Especially since I suspect this is going to come down to an intermitant bug of some sort.
    I'm sure you aware that printing to Postscript and then making a PDF is not the normal workflow for PDFs in InDesign. The normal workflow is to Export to PDF from InDesign. Can you tell us why you were printing to Postscript?
    Do you have the original Postscript files that InDesign produced? While, as you say, it is pretty much impossible for Acrobat Distiller to be at fault here, it is quite possible that inspection of the postscript file it processed can give you some important clues. Since Postscript is an ascii text-based language, you can open the PS file in a text editor and inspect it near some of the footnotes.
    It is also plausible to do some level of forensic analysis on the PDF files, but you'll be more dependent on complex tools and will be also one cooking step further along in the process.
    I assume you are using InDesign's Book feature with multiple INDD files (44 of them?).
    I would try printing to postscript with a wide variety of different settings in the print dialog, trying to see if you can replicate the problem. I would have to guess that it is something entirely unrelated to footnotes, if it is triggered by a setting, since there really isn't a setting to "scramble and drop half the footnotes."
    Have you tried watching over the shoulder of the individual human person who ran the export that failed, watching them from start to finish as they start inDesign, open the book, and export the postscript? Perhaps they are doing something non-intuitive that you would never try (or that doesn't even look wrong but just has
    unintended consequences!) that triggers this bizarre behavior.
    Of course an analagous question is whether that individual can reproduce the problem. Clearly you cannot, but maybe they can?
    None of this is very helpful I fear. Just my off-the-cuff thoughts. Good luck.

  • Footnote problems?

    Footnotes in InDesign that number correctly by book chapter are numbering by page in InCopy. In other words, instead of the footnotes starting again at "1" at the beginning of a chapter, they are starting over at "1" on each page of the InCopy file. I have the latest versions of InDesign and InCopy, but InCopy is not in sync with the InDesign footnotes. InCopy is creating a different parameter for footnotes on its own.

    Yes, I think so. I've had this footnote incongruity happen several times, and I have tried to check all the settings for consistency. Even if I have failed in my task, that still does not explain why the InCopy file does not look like the InDesign file. One is acting properly; the other is not. At the very least my problem is showing that InCopy does not always replicate InDesign. I've wondered if some footnote parameter could be remaining in the import file that InDesign and InCopy are reading differently. I've had the problem happen with both Word and Pagemaker import files.

  • Footnotes problem

    Hi,
    I have a problem formation my footnotes with StarWriter 7 (also 6).
    Formating footnotes has the <b>Before</b> and <b>After</b> option. That works fine, Ill see the text I need, &#91; &#93;, in front and behind.
    But I need this format also within the document. Anyone know how to do it?
    Yes I know, manually it is possible, but not a good idea coz auto numbering wont work in that case.
    Thanks,
    Tazmania

    Hiya :)
    Footnotes can be formatted under "Tools - Footnotes" in a StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; Writer text document. Here, on the "Footnotes" tab page, it is possible to apply square brackets to the AutoNumbering in the "Before" and "After" fields, for example. This will allow the footnote number to appear between brackets before the content of the footnote (e.g., &#91;1&#93; ...).
    This formatting option is intended to be applied only to the footnote content, and not to the text on the page. This feature has been implemented in StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; so that the footnote and its content can be differentiated from the footnote within the text, if desired.
    However, if square brackets or other characters should be added to the footnotes within the text itself, this can be done so manually. The manually entered characters are formatted as text and will not influence the automatic numbering of the footnotes whatsoever.
    We appreciate your input and have forwarded this information to the StarOffice&#91;TM&#93; Development team for a possible feature enhancement in one of the future versions.

  • Footnote problems on new pages

    Hi Everyone,
    this is a bit of strange problem but as its my doctoral thesis I'd be really glad of some help. Essentially pages is cutting numbers off my footnotes when it reaches the end of a line. Ie. if it is footnote number 78 and its at the end of a line all you can see is '7'. Does anyone know how this can be fixed?
    thanks

    Dear Peter and Roger,
    thanks very much for all your help I've managed to revert to pages 09 and remove the hyperlink and my footnotes look normal again. Lesson learned - don't just click update all - check what the updates are for first!!
    thanks again,

  • Serious problems with footnotes. Please help!

    Hello!
    Working with InDesign CS 6 with a book containing about 200 pages with 330 footnotes, numbered from 1 to 330 throughout the whole book.
    This day suddenly adding a new footnote at the beginning of the book (somewhere between footnote 11 and 12) is no longer possible. InDesign stops working and has to be ended by way of the taskmanager.
    When I add a footnote somewhere between footnote 280 and 281 it is still working.
    When I delete half of the book and half of the footnotes it is also working.
    So there seems to be a capacity-problem where InDesign "says": enough footnotes.
    I am not optimistic about a solution because (as an old user) I am aware that Adobe not repaired even the smallest imperfections concerning the management of footnotes since Pagemaker 3.
    But does someone know a solution or work around?
    The only thing I can think of is to manually add "footnoot-like" comments under the text on every page and placing some superscript sign to "fake" real footnotes. That is what we already have to do if we want to place a footnoot inside a table. Another very old and never solved problem! Even not after 10 years!
    I am also uncertain if breaking up all these footnotes starting new numberings for each section will solve the problem as the TOTAL amount of notes will not change. But adding a footnoot AT THE BEGINNING of a small section (with less footnotes) may "push forward" less notes and therefor may (?) prevent InDesign from crashing?
    Thanks for your appreciated help!
    Peter.

  • Footnotes and Bibliography?

    It appears that Apple has overlooked the ability to create footnotes and a bibiography in iBooks Author. (yet it's specifically targeted at the academic textbook market) Can this possibly be true???

    I accidentally found out that iBooks Author will support footnotes! But you have to create them in another application first.
    So here's my story. I use Scrivener 2.2 to create my books. But I really want to use iBooks Author to spice up the final product. I had text for a book typed in Scrivener, with footnotes already created. I copied and pasted them into iBooks Author and lo and behold, all of the footnotes were insterted at the end of the section in iBooks Author as endnotes!
    The footnote numbers appeared by the text, and then at the end of the section, the footnote number appeared along with the note, I was also able to go to a footnote and decrease the size of the footnote number (which I like to be smaller than the chapter text). Heck, I'll just show you...
    Here are screenshots (it's an old journal of my that I am footnoting). First screenshot is what it looks like in Scrivener, text on the left, footnotes on the right:
    I naïvely copied and pasted this text into IBooks. Lucky for me, this is how it came out in iBooks Author:
    I didn't realize that I had found a work-around for this footnote problem until I tried adding more footnotes while working in iBooks Author (which led me to these posts). So here's proof that if you create footnotes in another program, at least iBooks Author will recognize and create footnotes for you and put them at the end of the section. I figure it's better than nothing, but not very elegant for such an elegant program. Again, I am also able to change the font size of any footnote number or the text in a footnote.
    By the way, if you use this copy and paste method, just make sure you copy and paste an entire chapter all at once. When I copied and pasted paragraph by paragraph, it reordered the numbers back to footnote 1 in each paragraph, and you don't want to re-number them by hand.
    If anyone else has tried copying and pasting with another word processor with the same result, please let us all know.
    You might be thinking, what's the point of all of this if I have to use two word processors? I think of iBooks Author as my last step, not a word processor. I don't plan on creating my book drafts in it (I've tried, I don't think it's very efficient), I've decided I just want to use iBoooks Author to layout the final content that I created using another word processor, one that has all of the tools I need for efficient writing. Pages, Word or maybe even TextEdit might also work for writing your draft. Since the stuff I write needs footnotes or endnotes, I really don't know of any other options at present if I want to use iBooks Author.

  • Find open and close smart quotes

    Dear scripter,
    Here I am trying find whether all the open double smart quotes(") are closed with close double smart quotes("). Here is my small work to find how many open and close quotes.
    myopenqu=app.activeDocument.search("^{", false, false, "^{");
    myclosequ=app.activeDocument.search("^}", false, false, "^}");
    myopenqulength = myopenqu.length;
    myclosequlength = myclosequ.length;
    if(myopenqulength!=myclosequlength)
    alert("Quotes not matched\n"+ myopenqulength +" Open quotes found\n" + myclosequlength +" Close quotes found")
    It works well, the script just alert if I have 25 open quotes and 23 close quotes
    Quotes not matched
    25 Open quotes found
    23 close quotes found
    Now I want to find the quote set where the 24,25th set close quotes are missing?
    Is there any way to find the misisng quotes
    Thanks in advance
    regards

    vpublish.net

    You'd have to look for unmatched quotes, in this case two cases of two open quotes without an intervening closed quote. This is difficult to script in CS2 because it doesn't have GREP natively and because of footnote problems. In CS3/4 it should be possible. But even then it will work only if you don't have quotes within quotes.

  • Problem with Footnotes

    Hello to everyone!
    I am having a problem using footnotes in InDesign.
    I place a word file (62 pages) in a text box, which containes footnotes. The problem is that in InDesign the footnotes start from number 2 (it should start from number 1 as in the word file)
    Is there anyone who could help me?
    Thanks in advance!

    Your word document may be a doc file, but not created with Word. It may be created with OpenOffice and saved as Word file. It has created some errors in footnote numbering for me placing such files. Try this (it has helped me): place file to InDesign, save InDesign document, then select the whole text, copy it and paste it to real empty Word file. Save Word file and check if there are still errors in footnote numbers. Correct footnote numbers and save the file. Place the real Word file to your InDesign document again. This has done the trick to me. OpenOffice might be compatible with Word, but it has some problems with InDesign. Sorry for bad English...

  • Footnote text flow problem.

    My problem is that the footnotes don't split and then the rest of the document will not show in the text frame.  The document has lots of footnotes and a lot of them are long (over 2 pages).  I have the  minimum space set at .125" and Allow Split Footnote checked.  If I make the text block a bigger the next sentence will pull in and the the big gap is gone.  Any ideas on how to get the next sentence to pull in?

    I do have keep the first and last 2 line together. If I turn it off, the text still doesn't pull in. If I make the text block a little bigger, the footnote will split.  (see screen shot)

  • Problems importing Word Doc footnotes/endnotes into Dreamweaver CS4

    I am having a problem importing a Word doc with footnotes/endnotes into Dreamweaver. When I do the import (or a copy and paste) I get the references without the actual number for the endnotes in superscript!
    I currently have Dreamweaver CS4 (though have also experienced this issue with Dreamweaver 8)
    I am currently using Word 2007 (but experienced this same problem with earlier versions of Word).
    The document has a standard sort of endnote. In the middle of the text there is a number in superscript that refers to a note at the end. When I do an import I get the nice set of back and forth references with anchors and links but missing the number! Let me copy and paste an example:
    Here is the text I have:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,[i] with the UK
    [i] DFID (2010) DFID in 2009-10.
    Now here is the HTML I get when I import:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,<a href="#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title="" id="_ednref1"> </a> with the  UK
    And as an endnote:
    <div id="edn1">
        <p><a href="#_ednref1" name="_edn1" title="" id="_edn1"> </a> DFID (2010) <em>DFID in 2009-10</em>.</p>
      </div>
      <div id="edn2">
    What I really need is:
    the largest multilateral recipient of UK aid,<a href="#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title="" id="_ednref1">1</a> with the  UK
    And as an endnote:
    <div id="edn1"><p><a href="#_ednref1" name="_edn1" title="" id="_edn1">1</a> DFID (2010) <em>DFID in 2009-10</em>.</p>
      </div>  <div id="edn2">
    Does anyone know why these superscript numbers are missing? And how I can get Dreamweaver to put them in. I have long documents with 50 or more footnotes and would hate to have to redo this by hand!

    The problem is that some of the material in the endnote/footnote is explanatory in nature rather than just a reference or citation. So I need a way to include explanatory text and don't want to put multiple sentences in ( ) in the middle of the text.
    I would have to say clearly someone at Adobe did think conversion of endnotes/footnotes is a worthwhile endeavour, because Dreamweaver is designed to do it! You can see clearly from the code snippet that they programmed Dreamweaver to do an import with a very nice set of back and forth anchor references. Just somehow the actual reference numbers don't show up. In fact the HTML code for this provided by Dreamweaver is very clean and nice (contradicting bemdesign's assertion that you can not turn a word doc into a good HTML doc), with the exception of the missing number references!
    Is there a setting somewhere that I might need to play with to get this to work better?? Or something I need to do with the Word doc text before I do an import? Any other work around.
