Footnotes won't renumber indesign cs6

I'm in book publishing and new to Indesign. I'm working on a mac pro, in a document created by another publisher (a 44 page chapter of a book). The Type > Document footnote options are set to renumber every section. There is one section in the document, at the first page. If I insert a footnote, the subsequent note callouts in the main text renumber, but the notes themselves don't. The newly inserted note has the correct number, but the following notes retain their numbers. Thus, if I insert a note after note 24, the new reference number will be 25; old note 25's reference number is now 26, etc.; the new footnote is also correctly numbered 25, but old footnote 25 and all following footnotes retain their old numbers. If I change the footnote options to renumber each page, the reference numbers comply, but the notes themselves retain their original numbers. I've tried cutting all the text out of the document and pasting it back in, but nothing changed. Can anyone enlighten me here?

I have never seen what you describe, and I've set scores of academic books and journals, many with several hundred footnotes, going back to before ID could "do" footnotes and they required a separate text box adjusted by hand (à la PageMaker).  Maybe I misunderstood, but I wonder why you need a section on the first page: sections are an aspect of pages rather than text flow, so ID allows just one per page.  Every now and again I need to change the numbering within a page, and when I do I fake one set notes so I can control the numbers.
Much more often, I need to add an un-numbered or asterisked footnote above the first note, generally the author's acknowledgments.  The workaround for this is to insert a carriage return before ftnt 1 and type the note on that new line (I often use a separate paragraph style).  ID doesn't care, apparently thinking my addition is part of the first note.  If the first page doesn't have a ftnt for me to sneak the acknowledgments into then I do it the old-fashioned way, in a separate text box at the foot of the page -- easier than messing with sections.
There are many complaints on this forum about the failings of ID's footnoting, and kind souls occasionally explain various workarounds they've come up with.  The most frustrating is ID's habit of losing footnotes when importing word files, which has become more pronounced with new versions.  Jongware became so frustrated he wrote a Javascript that converts Word end-notes (which seem to import okay, albeit as dumb text at the end) into ID footnotes.  The best single source I know of for information on notes in InDesign is Peter Kahrel's website.
Good luck,
David

  • Indesign CS6 won't install on Windows 7 64bit via GPO

    Good afternoon,
I created a installation of Indesign CS6 with application manager enterprise 3 to deploy to computers via the active directory.
It installs correctly without issue to Windows XP x86 machines however won't install to Windows 7 x64 machines.
When the computers starts it trys to install but fails and proceeds to the login screen.  The following information is left in the Windows event log.
Has anyone else had this problem and more importantly know how to solve it?

    Hi Abhijit,
I am able to install InDesign CS6 manually on the machines from the CD/DVD however when trying to install it via GPO or running the msi using the msi exec commands it doesn't install and leaves the above errors in the event log.
The installation was made using the same CD/DVD and the installation works on the Windows XP clients and software other than InDesign CS6 will install to the Win 7 64-bit machines via GPO.
    Cheers,

  • Indesign CS4 files won't open in CS6

Installed CS6 on new MBP. Moved CS4 design files over to new computer.
Files won't open in CS6. Get the following message:
Cannot open "filename.indd". The file "filename.indd" is damaged (Error code: 4).
This happens with ALL of my CS4 Indesign files. (*Note: they DO open on old MBP)
I tried exporting one as IDML on old machine - same thing.
Any suggestions? I was told all older version files will open in NEW CS versions. True?

The Voodoo is in the basics. - turn it off...turn it on?
I just quit InDesign CS6 and reopened...now all of my files are opening fine in CS6!
@Bob - just to double check - moved files from old mbp - onto external hd - then brought them over to new mbp...is there a better way?

  • Updated InDesign CS6 and not unexpectedly quits and won't open

Hi, I just updated indesign cs6 (for mac) this morning and now it won't open and just crashes with the "InDesign has unexpectedly quit" window. PhotoShop, Ilustrator and Dreamweaver all seem to be opening and working fine but it's InDesign I need! Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Dara

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. I re-downloaded the original version InDesign from the my adobe user site and installed it again, I also used Onyx to clear all permission, preferences etc and restarted which got it working again. I'm in the middle of doing a massive project that has very tight deadlines so I don't think I'll try updating again until it's finished. Adobe CS6 in general doesn't seem to be updating properly at all, either through the app store on mountain lion or through the adobe updater system. Is this a common problem do you know? Again, apologies for the lateness of my reply and thank you, Dara

  • Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?

Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?
When I export a PDF from InDesign CS6 with specific margins, Acrobat does not recognize the Art box. (I have PitStop Pro 11 for page box view)

    Thanks Steve,
We are exporting PDF's as you indicate. I see the same thing. The boxes are all the size of the original InDesign document. The PDF art box should be predicated by the margins in InDesign. When we had CS3, this worked great. Now, it seems that there is a disconnect between the two Adobe products honoring the page box size. I have contacted the Adobe techs via chat, and they had no clue what I was referring to. I find it mystifying that Acrobat can not interpret the art box set in InDesign as margins.

  • Adobe InDesign CS5 needs plugs ins, but how?   Adobe InDesign CS6 won't open says OS problem.  Adobe upgrade site crashes on me. ?

Adobe InDesign CS5 needs plugs ins, but how?   Adobe InDesign CS6 won't open says OS problem.  Adobe upgrade site crashes on me.

You might ask in InDesign to learn how to install plugins
    >says OS problem
What IS your operating system, and which exact version?
Is the link below where you are starting for upgrades?
All Adobe updates start here and select product, read to see if you need to install updates in number order, or if the updates are cumulative for the individual product http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/

  • How may I change footnotes position in Indesign CS6?

Hi, I'm having a problem with Indesign CS6, the problem is I like to compose my page using text frames, so basically I can have 3 or 4 or even 5 different text frames in my page. Then, I need to add footnotes, but, indesign is placing me the footnotes at the bottom of its text frame. Well, I don't want that, because perhaps that particular text frame is not close to the bottom of the page, and what I want is all footnotes go (lie) to the bottom of the page. I don't know if you understood me well? if I did not explain this well, please tell me, and I will try to explain it again.
So imagine I have a text frame that is in the center of page, and is not touching the bottom of the page. I have more frame texts along the page, and when I try to insert a footnote indesign fix, glue, that footnote to its text frame, and don't give me freedom to select other position where I can place the footnotes. Perhaps I want them to the side of the page, or perhaps to the bottom in the right side... I cannot do that, or at least, I don't know how to do that.
Please, could you tell me how may I change the footnotes position when they are created in text frames? The footnotes seems to be grouped to the text frame (although they are not), and basically I cannot move the footnotes position to other arbitrary position I want.
Any idea about how may I do this?
    Cheers

@mrmister1 – for a not threaded single text frame it is quite easy.
Just expand the text frame to the bottom of your page:
For a threaded text frame (the text will flow through several text frames) just use a rectangle with text wrap to force the footnote down:

  • InDesign CS6 won't open files

InDesign CS6 won't open some files. No error message, simply returns to previous 'Open...' view. I've tried restarting, rebooting, resetting my InDesign preferences and re-unzipping the original zip file. I can still open previously worked on files, though. (Even in the second folder of unzipped files, it's the same files that I can and cannot open.) Any ideas? InDesign

    EditingErin wrote:
Ooh – I just had another look to check that they are CS6 files. The are, but each file size is 0 bytes – think that may be the problem! Thanks again both for responding so quickly. :-)
That sounds like you have the resource fork for a Mac-generated .indd file. Check to see if there is another file with the same name but a real file size in the zip archive. I suspect the "real" file (the data fork) is being unzipped first, then the resource fork is overwriting without warning and you could solve it by extract9ng the files manually.

  • Indesign CS6 won't load on my right hand monitor

Indesign CS6 won't load on my right hand monitor

Joining the discussion... [running CS6 on Windows8; dual screen 23"; 1920 x 1080 (NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT card; DVI, HDMI)]
I have had the same problem. Each of the panels (pages, layers etc.) would not work with the mouse/pointer... if I clicked in a panel, I could tab/shift tab through each component in the panel, use the arrow keys to make changes, but the mouse/pointer was not active.
After extreme frustration... The following appears to solve the issue.
Solution: Open Indesign CS6, set up screen positions for the panels as required, save the workspace (Window/Workspace/New Workspace...).
Sorry... this appeared to worked... but I have dicovered that it only works for a short period then this problem seems to rear it ugly head again and all panels are intermitent in their responsiveness. Currently I have tried re-start... doesn't seem to change the problem, a shutdown and startup resets everything but the problem soon appears again. I'm searching for a solution... anyone?

  • My Windows 7 with InDesign CS6 crashed. I try to re-install, but it won't take my license key. What now?

My Windows 7 with InDesign CS6 crashed. I try to re-install, but it won't take my license key. What now?

Ned, thanks for pointing me towards chat sessions.
I am almost there now, thanks the chat advise.
This is was Adobe tells me: You have a volume license serial number. You need to login to www.licensing.adobe.com website and download the software and you can activate the software without any issue.
I did go there but came no further. Then Adobe said: I checked and see that your email address is not registered under the Licensing website. Please contact the administrator under whose email address the product was purchased to add you as a user and you will be able to login and download the product.
So it is now in the hands of our IT guy who purchased this serial license

  • Desktop Content Viewer won't appear in InDesign CS6

I am having an issue in CS6 Indesign with teh ADOBE DESKTOP CONTENT VIEWER.
I try to preview a folio using the desktop viewer and nothing happens, it silently fails.
I have uninstalled Indesign CS6 (including preferences), Uninstalled adobe Air 3.3. Uninstalled the content viewer.
rebooted, reinstalled air rebooted, reinstalled Indesign CS6 rebooted...
After installing InDesign CS6, i choose Help > Updates and updated the DPS Desktop Tools
    And it still doesn't work!
I think it may be to do with AIR rather than InDesign because it goes through the progressbars in InDesign and I have previously a BETA version of AIR that caused an issue else where, even though this is now uninstalled and the latest release of AIR is installed it still is failing to comunicate with AIR.
I also, based on another posts recomendation, installed earlier version of the tools, but this made no difference. I suspected it wouldnt as it installed to different version folders.
Its really frustrating as it works fine on a co-workers PC running 64bit WIndows 7
I now get this error if the folio is a new folio...
I deleted my current folio and started again and when i try to preview i get this...

    Hi Everyone,
I can see, for such a long time many people are facing this issue (Desktop Content Viewer won't appear in InDesign CS6)
Friends here is the solution of this distinguished problem.
    Steps: [For Window XP]
[Make sure your log-in has “Administration” rights]
Open My Computer [Window Key + E].
Open the Main Local Disk [C:].
    Click on “Search” tab above.
Click on “All files and folders”.
Write “AdobeContentViewer.air” in “All or part of the file name:” Box.
Click on “Search” [Now you can see “AdobeContentViewer.air” file]
Double click on “AdobeContentViewer.air” to install it.
    Select checkbox for “Desktop Shorcut”
Once it installed, open “Adobe Content Viewer” from the desktop.
    Now close “Adobe Content Viewer”.
Open Indesign Application and try to “Preview” your article/work from the “Folio Overlay Panel”
I hope this will work for you.
Guys please share your experience after performing the above.
    Cheers

  • InDesign CS6 with Window 8 Won't Launch

Had been working fine, last launch was 3 days ago.  Today tried to open InDesign CS6 (Windows 8.1) and get the following InDesign.exe error box: "CAnot load InDesign.exe because it requires Paragraph Composer. Please install the Paragraph Composer plug-in and restart InDesign."  How do you do this, where do you get?

    Peter thanks for your help.
I set up a new user account and tried, but that didn't work either.
    Do I need to :
    1. uninstall InDesign only with Windows Unintsaller (not the entire suite?)
    2. download InDesign from Adobe's website
    3. put in our serial # and I should be good to go?
Or will I still need to reinstall my plugins through the Adobe manager?
    Thanks
I would certainly try just doing ID first. If that's not successful you can remove the whole suite, run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) then reinstall.

  • InDesign CS6 won't package fonts or package anything after installing OSx mavericks - Client is waiting

Pre-Mavericks I had zero problems packaging my INDD files in Adobe InDesign CS6 with all fonts and links intact. Now, when I go to package the same files I successfully packaged last year under Lion, InDesign tells me the fonts can't be packaged (and doesn't package anything else either). My client is becoming very frustrated so I would really appreciate some help from Adobe in solving this problem as soon as possible.

    Thank you Willi for responding.
Which fonts are affected? - I'm assuming all of the fonts are affected since no fonts are able to be packaged.
Are all used fonts installed? - Yes
Did you have your fonts in a Document Fonts folder beside your old file and saved your new document on a different place? - Before I upgraded to Mavericks I was able to package everything for this exact same file so I do have fonts in the packaged folder (referring to my 2013 file) so even though the fonts aren't in a Documents folder (they are inside the package "Fonts" folder) so I think the answer to your question is yes.
Does your font folder have the same permession as the folder before? - I believe so because I never changed the permissions for the fonts
Do you use CS6 as part of the Creative Cloud and are you using TypeKit fonts? Or are you using the boxed version? - I am trying to avoid using Creative Cloud since I already have CS6 that I have already paid for. What I am reading on the internet, however, is that Adobe is forcing people to move over to CC when they upgrade to Mavericks due to problems like I am having now. I am not sure if this is true/untrue but I am definitely concerned. I can not afford right now to start paying a monthly fee (especially after I have already paid for CS6). I am using a boxed version of CS6 and I am not using TypeKit fonts.

  • InDesign CS6 won't export to server...Help!

I'm having a problem exporting jpegs, pngs, PDF's, etc. to my server at work. It will only allow me to export them to my desktop. AT first I thought it was a problem with perhaps our server at work and the new InDesign CS6 (since we just upgraded from CS3), but now i'm starting to think that it could be a permissions issue with my personal network account. I am also unable to open any files from the list in the 'Open a Recent Document' window that pops up when first launching InDesign.
Is this something that someone knows anything about or can help with? Our IT department is stuggling to figure this out and it's slowing down my work flow.
    Thanks in advance!
    Whitney

Well, I need to be logged into my personal network account in order to access any of my files/settings/and just at all times. I can't be working off a random user account. Any other suggestions?
