For all of those with DM problems

I have read quite a few of threads where people describe problems they are having...I know it can be frustrating.  So let me make some general comments:
1. RIM is not involved with this site as far as support goes (TMK), just a bunch of users
2. Mac users are used to things going fairly smoothly with new software installation...
3. RIM is a direct competitor of Mac (iPhone...LOL)
4. Diagnosing a software issue can be difficult (especially when no information is supplied regarding Mac system, Mac OS, Device, Device OS, and what other software did you or do you have installed)...
5.  My first recommendation is to reinstall the DM software following this thread:

7. Do not expect perfect one-to-one sync of contacts, calendar events and notes.  The field maps are different...remember they are competing software platforms.  You may have to "clean up" either your device or iCal/Address Book BEFORE you sync...and always archive.
8. If it fails the first thing to do is delete the blackberrydesktop folder from user/username/library/application support restart, repair permissions, clear cache and try again.

    I've personally not seen this behaviour since Firefox version 2. It however re-appeared for me in 3.6.6 and 3.6.7 (current) and it's bloody awful. Makes everything I do take 50% longer ..... great for efficiency in the modern world.
    This 3.6 branch is so riddle with flaws which seem never to be fixed. Each fix / update brings with it more problems ... worst of all I see version 4 is already in development but they cannot even get 3.6 right ??? WTF ????
    Mozilla must stop chasing version numbers as has become the trend in the software world. Fix an existing version to perfection then start working on a new branch of the product.

    Yes but the iPhone chargers will struggle to charge the iPads ,they need more power than the iPhone chargers produce and with an iPad will charge VERY slowly
    The iPad chargers whether 10w or 12 will happily charge all your devices and Apple confirms the compatibility on the relevant web page.

    Basically you can use only 1 internal table with FOR ALL ENTRIES statement.

    I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
    You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

    I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
    You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.  
    The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

    Save your process files outside of the NI progam directory (you should have external backups already right ).  THey should not be deleted.
    Any customizations to the lookout.ini and lookout.sec file may be lost.

  • Resources from Adobe for accessibility and those with disabilities?

    I am tutoring a student with cerebral palsy which is primarily a motor control disability. He has the will and determination, but he's having trouble using the software. The tips and advice I would normally give don't normally take into account this barrier and this is the first time I've had the opportunity to tutor a differently-ablled person. He has problems with fine motor control and just all around controlling things to the point of also using keyboard shortcuts with the mouse and digitizer. He has a digitizer, but has problems controlling the pen. He also has a difficult time taking notes as he has trouble holding and controlling a pencil. He's paid his tuition and I'd hate for the program he's in to be a waste for him. There has to be some kind of resource ready that Adobe has put together that can help.
    He also has possible learning disability as an indirect issue, probably caused by incomplete education when young or from frustation/lost opportunities/difficulty in traditional learning environment. Plus, he has had no graphic arts history or skill before this class. I think he was led astray by people telling him that he didn't need previous [even basic] skills in graphic arts, this is a tough program and not forgiving for those not able to keep up, for anybody that would be a tough road to travel. So, there's that. So I've had to rethink how to approach tutoring and it's become more involved than a part-time tutoring vollunteering activity will allow. I'm pretty much flying by the seat of my pants and sometimes it gets to the point of doing most of the work for him since he can't do a lot of the motions needed for such an advanced suite of software and I feel that's making him feel worse because he's not doing a lot of the work (he's learning, but it seems it's at a distance and he's not getting the experience of doing it himself and he feels that grating on himself). Cerebral Palsy has often been described as being trapped in a body that won't cooperate with you and it's very apparent here that that is the case.
    I would appreciate some advice on where to go, maybe get some inspiration from those with cerebral palsy who have succeeded in the graphic arts industry. He's a good friend, but it's painful to see him struggle when in the back of my mind it seems he doesn't have to. He has the ideas, just translating them to the screen is hard to do.

    It's a complex problem, but you might begin by looking into getting a special large sized trackball device if you haven't already. That way he can rest his hand on it. Logitech produce a large softball one with programmable extra buttons for handicapped people. On the Adobe end and specific to Photoshop you might look into Adobe Configurator to create a bunch of custom panels with buttons instead of keyboard shortcuts. Also keep in mind that PS can use iPads as inputs ever since CS6, so if you have one of those floating around, installing those touch apps as well as PS Touch might already help your student to get a bit further. Otherwise I don't think there's much you can do. Unfortunately Adobe apps aren't particulalrly "accessible". They haven't even resizable UI elements for visually impaired people.... Most web sites aare more friendly in that department...

  • For all iPad owners with video freezing concerns- read this first!

    First of all, take a deep breath, acknowledge that it is not your fault, and there is nothing you can do with the software to fix it. It is a hardware problem, most likely video chip related, that is ONLY solved with replacement. I have had several discussions with senior tech support who won't say exactly what the cause is, but admit that there is nothing a user can do to fix the problem other than replacement. Which they will happily provide. This is where it gets tricky.
    If you are like me, you can't live a day without your iPad, even though you also have a smart phone, a net book and a laptop....if I can admit it, so can you. So if your local store has a brown box replacement for your model, go in and get it replaced, and you are done. Most of the time, this will fix the issue because they test these ones first. If you are like me and your store does not have a replacement for your wifi only model, then you have to either drop yours off and wait for a replacement to be shipped in 4-5 business days, or purchase apple care where they will hot swap a new iPad with you with overnight to your doorstep. This is the way to go and here is why: you can't be without your iPad and you won't be. AppleCare is $100 that is fully refundable at a pro rated time period. So you have it for 1 week and then cancel it. Cost of use? Should be about $2. And the experience is seamless. This is just my opinion, but it worked for me!

    Agreed; The problem might very well be a hardware one. After all, these symptoms are very weird. It's undoubtedly a great phone. The main reason I bought it was to have the first decent looking WCDMA phone out there (that works in Europe) and I still quite like it.
    To tell you the truth though, I was going to replace it with a 8GB N91, until I tried one yesterday. It's way too bulky, actually the dimensions seem weird - nothing like my old 8850. The HDD explains everything, but I really don't need another DAP or a pocket drive, so it won't quite do.
    I'll take your advice and take the 6630 to my nearest NSC. Hopefully they'll be able to revive it. If not, I'll replace it with something very small.

    I think it's a case of "what goes around, comes around". You've obviously taken good care of your phone, whereas I haven't. I definitely should've taken it to a NSC to be updated. These problems, as mentioned above, might also have something to do with the hardware, as the phone has taken some unintended abuse during the years. We'll just have to wait and see.
    The original RS-MMC card was in the phone when it was updated. After that the phone claimed it was faulty. Other cards don't seem to work either. Unfortunately formatting them didn't help.
    I still partially blame the NSU, since these problems didn't surface until the software was supposedly "successfully updated". My 6630 is a bad combo of possibly damaged hardware and new firmware.

    You could perform the following steps:
    1. Login to CMC.
    2. Go to Folders >> Manage >> Top Level Security
    3. Click on Add Principal and add the user or group for which you have to set the security.
    4. Click on assign Security >> Advanced tab >> Add/Remove Rights.
    5. Select Content >> Web Intelligence Report
    6. assignt "Edit Object" right as denied and click on apply ok.
    This would help you to block edit option for only webi reports and all the webi reports in your environment.

  • To all those with Superdrive problems

    There are a lot of threads on a lot of fora regarding the Matshita DVD-RW drive in the MBPs. The name contains a well known English obscenity and it appears to be well deserved.
    I bought one of the first rev.A MBPs (as usual... when will I learn) and it turned out to be a duffer (massive heat problems, throttling and 1 GHz operation at most loads). Apple took it back and returned me (months later) a brand new MBP (2.16 Core Duo, 256 MB VRAM, 2 GB RAM, 7200 rpm HD, etc.) since I'd gone for a good spec.
    In the meantime I'd bought a black Macbook and was extremely happy with its performance and greater portability (for my workload it was just as good, I'm not a graphics pro).
    So the MBP, after it arrived, lay unused for some time. I'm now trying to sell it, so decided to fire it up, hardware test it, then wipe the disk thoroughly and restore it.
    Would it take any optical media? No. Just a chomping noise, like a bad floppy drive used to sound like.
    Out of warranty, and wanting to sell it, I decided to rip the thing apart and see what the problem was. It showed up fine in System Profiler (so not software) but made a nasty mechanical sound, so I thought there may be a chance there was something mechanical involved, and I may be able to fix it.
    Once I'd disassembled the MBP enough to get the DVD drive out, it was painfully clear that the DVD drive was either an impossible engineering requirement or a shoddy job. I got the top lid off the drive and ran the machine with both CDs and DVDs in, not only would the head scrape along the protective (thin and easily warped) metal plate, but parts of the mechanism would rub against the disc due to flex in the chassis of the drive. This was exacerbated by the flex build into the lower left hand corner of the drive by the use of two rubber washers.
    I admit I hacked it up a bit - added material to force the bottom left corner chassis screw to hold the chassis more firmly, and cut away the metal over the worm drive for the head.
    It all works now, like all my previous Powerbooks did - smooth, quiet and no vibration or scraping.
    Since the problem doesn't apply to all machines, I'd guess this is mainly due to Matshita poor manufacturing or poor assembly tolerances. The drive is only held into the MBP by three screws - all of which are on very flexible brackets, so there's no way of securing the structure of the drive in the MBP by using Apple's screws.
    Apple aren't the culprit here - ***** Matshita drives are the problem. Fortunately I got lucky by working out where the problem lay and cutting stuff until it worked...

    Inherent poor design or poor assembly can twist the Matshita drive, causing incorrect performance. This can be mitigated by disassembly and ensuring that the optical drive chassis is dead straight, perhaps by adding a washer to the lower left corner screw. An alternative to paying for a new unit if your machine is out of warranty.
