Will an OSX Reinstall for Flashing Question Mark Lose My Data?

I restarted my pbook after a major hang and got the evil question mark folder.
I did as the Apple documents said and got my install CD and tried to do a verify/repair on my harddrive yet that failed really quickly.
I am going to visit my friend tomorrow to first try FW Target mode to see if I can access the hard drive and back up some data and then use DiskWarrior to try and repair the disk.
What I am wondering is if I choose to reinstall without formating will I lose my data? Also is there any other steps that I can take to fix it or save my data?
Sigh... Looking for any hope.

Hi, nibaq. Welcome to the Discussions.
If Verify/Repair from the Tiger Install Disc failed on your hard drive, as you state, then you have problems with the drive that need to be corrected before you attempt an Archive and Install.
See the "Disk Utility cannot repair the disk" section of my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
When the hard drive directory issues are sorted, then see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.

TS1702 Asking for security question to be answered that I don't know the answer to.

Itunes is asking fo security questions to be answered that I don't seem to know the answers to. Need help fixing this problem.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.

My Slow Mac Mini - will someone once and for all give me an answer!!

I got a 1.25 ghz Mac Mini with 512 RAM running 10.4.4 . This thing has been so slow since I pulled it out of the box. I always get the colorwheel when doing just about anything. No, I don't have a bunch of apps open, just Safari and Mail. I tried closing Dashboard, but that did not help. There is also this lag, when I mouse over my dock, it does not immediatly respond. This is no fun. Does someone have an educated answer for this problem?

If you restart your mini, does it act this slow from the start? Or is it when you use it for a period of time?
Also, open Finder, and click on the Applications section. Look for a program called Activity Monitor (it may be in a folder called Utilities). When that opens, there is a section called Memory (may be Memory Usage). Click on this and sort by Memory on the list. This will show programs that are using significant amounts of memory. My hunch is that a program is eating up all available memory and slowing your mini down. The most likely culprit is Safari. To quit Safari, you have to actual select from the menu, the Quit option. Just clicking on the X will not close Safari.
Post back with the answers to my first two questions. Also, post back with what you find in the Activity Monitor program. There are lots of people here that are more knowledgeable than me, so hang in there, we'll find the answer.

        Pattern p0 = Pattern.compile("(\\p{Punct})?");

Certain sms are all question marks?!

Not sure if anyone is having the same problem. I recently upgraded my 3G to iPhone 4 (both unlock versions from Hong Kong). My colleague from Korea sends me English sms but all show as ??? ???
The same sms sent to another iphone 4 showed correctly. The sms sent to my old 3G by the same colleague were all OK. I also asked another friend in Korea sent test sms to my new iphone 4 and it was OK too. Just the messages from the colleague to my iphone 4 are all ??? ???
I am sure it is not related to Korean/Chinese characters, since all messages are in English. This bothers me a lot, since we need to communicate frequently via sms. Please, please help!!

I did some research on Google and found a few references to this. It is definitely something to do with language as it was being reported with Hebrew, Arabic and Chinese characters. It is to do with Unicode characters and is probably network rather than phone related. It has also been reported on other makes of phone. See this thread

Some math elements appear as question marks in equations - FM9/Win7Pro

Hello everyone,
I am facing the issue that some math elements appear as question marks in equations; for example, the summation and angle symbols.
The approximately equal or the alpha symbols, for example, appear correctly.
The symbol font is installed.
System specs:
FrameMaker 9 with the latest patches installed.
Windows 7 Professional with the latest updates installed.
The strange thing is that math elements appear correctly using virtual computers on my computer (Windows XP and Windows 7 Ultimate on VMWare).
Same maker.ini file and fonts are present on all (real and virtual) computers.
I have reinstalled FrameMaker already on my real computer (where I have the trouble) and it did not solve the issue.
I have checked (I think) all question mark related topics (when question marks are displayed instead of the correct characters) on this site, but none of them provided the solution to my problem.
I would appreciate your help!

Thank you for your response.
I use Adobe PDF as the default printer on both the real and virtual computers and I do not know the SetPrint utility.
I see the question marks appear in the FM files as well as in the printed PDF. It makes me think it is not a printing issue.
c:\windows\fonts is provided as the Font Source in the Embedding box for the Adobe PDF printer both on my real computer and my virtual one.
The SymbolMT font is listed in both cases in the Embedding box, which is (probably) referred to as Symbol Regular when I open the c:\windows\fonts folder using Windows Explorer. No other symbol fonts seem to be installed in this folder. I do not know how to check what other folders FM considers.
By the way, I can insert the summation character, for example, as a simple character using the Equations editor correctly, the problem comes when I try to insert it as a math element.

How can I change the Arabic question mark (shift +...

I have a Nokia E72 that was purchased from Dubai. All default languages are changed now to English. Even the "Writing Language" is in English. But when I type a text message, the keyboard key for the question mark (shift + L) comes up in Arabic. Is there a way to change this (either a quick fix or one going through the OS) to permanently appear in English?

Weird folder icon with question mark

for the past twenty four hours, my computer has not been booting up. it finally chimes that it's on,but it won't go any further than the screen with the tiny folder icon in the middle that shows the finder icon and then a question mark. any answers to this? i have rebooted and recharged everything, so i am at a loss.

You could probably purchase the Tiger 10.4.x install disc, for less money that the price of DiskWarrior, which is $99.95.
And you really need to have system install discs at your disposal.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

Images have question mark e-mail and web pages

Why are half of all images not there,replaced with blue box with question marks. Anything on line , like emails ,web sights. No rime or reason. Please help me out. I am new with apple, not computers.... Thank You, kimbr

IF you click My Verizon do you see a quick signing on page (you should) then you should see xxx emails and be able to click that link to see emails. Once in a while It shows signed out (before the 2 weeks are up) and I have to click the link a second time to connect. I always use the "stay logged in for 2 weeks option"

Once you get this fixed, the email client should easily be resolved (what client do you use? )

Question Marks everywhere!

I just loaded in the CD for my Live! Cam Chat (i think there i s a Vista in there somewhere). it says it works for window's XP as well, which is what I have. Most of the menu's in the creative cam window (where i can see myself) are all question marks everywhere. What looks like a sign in window is also all ?.
I have everything is says it needs to operate, i checked english as my language during install.....i loaded everything the way it said to. Even the properties menu is all ?. Any idea's? Thanks!

Folder with Question Mark and a useless disk stuck in my disk drive!

earlier on today my computer crashed. I have read on a couple of posts that I should try to boot the computer from the install disk. Cool. The only problem is that when my computer crashed I had a CD in the disk drive. When I try to start the computer up I see a question mark and folder, but will not respond to any commands like "eject" or even holding the mouse button.
What do I do? I'm in Korea and going back to Canada in two weeks, but I need my computer!

The Question Mark folder implies that your MacBook can't find a System Folder to boot from. It doesn't mean the drive is bad.
Are you holding down the C key while booting? Make sure the MacBook is shut down. Now, press the power button, hold down the C key and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo on the screen, then let go. You should see an Installer window, select English. DO not proceed with any installation.. do this. From the Menu Bar, click Utilities/Startup Disk. When that window opens, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click the Restart button. That will boot your Mac back up from the hard disk, not the restore disk. If this works, don't forget to eject your restore disk and store it in a safe place.

SQL Query returns question marks

I am seeing a SQL Query, executed via ADODB in VB, from a 10G client (don't know exact version) to a Sun Solaris based 9.2.0.5.0 Server return all question marks...Table queried consists of 3 columns, 2 varchar2, one long: Here query:
SELECT SETTINGVALUE FROM EWORKFLO.CONFIG WHERE SETTINGGROUP='New test' AND SETTINGNAME='Single Page'
The query results in 2576 question marks...(????? etc).
Any idea what may be going on here?

Thanks for replying. When this query is run from SQLPLUS we get a proper result back, that is the actual values from the SETTINGVALUE column. This is the LONG column and contains data like this:

DeviceTimeout=15
Display=1
hDCCreate=0
Unit=0
DialogTitle=
IniFileName=c:\winnt\temp\kf.ini
IniSectionName=Scan Section
DeviceCache=1
etc....etc....
Depending on the settings created, the return string may vary in length.
