For ecommerce - coldfusion or php?

Hi folks,
I want to build a complete ecommerce site. I've just started learning java script and php and i am planning to learn colfusion for the ecommerce aspect of web development. However, i just came across something on the web that said one could build an ecommerce site with php as well - something i didn't know.
Question: is there any advantage CF has over php in relation to ecommerce and, even if there is, can i get away with doing it with php -  being that it is free rather than having to buy coldfusion?
Thanks

I presume that YOUR application will not be processing credit cards, debit cards and paypal transactions.  But rather your application will be passing these jobs off to credit card, debit card and|or paypal companies to do the credit card processing for you.
I.E.  YOUR application should NEVER COME NEAR to a credit card or other financial transaction.  That opens up a giant can of worms that I would hope is not going to be tackled by a student "just started learning java script and php".
What YOUR application should do is collect the order information from a customer and then send the appropiate data to the API of the company you have chosen to handle the financial transactions and then wait from a response from their system.
Just wanted to be clear.  And none of this changes whether you right your application in ColdFusion, PHP, ASP.NET, Cobal or binary.  The point here is that there are a lot of very important privacy and security requirements to handling financial transactions that must be dealt with at all levels of system design, implementation, and maintenance.  And unless you are working for Paypal, or some other such company, you don't even want to attempt something like this.
I'll get off my soapbox now.

  • Slight roadblock in "DW 8 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP: Training from the Source"

    I'm working my way through Dreamweaver 8 with ASP,
    ColdFusion, and PHP:
    Training from the Source. I've come to the middle of Lesson 6
    and have hit
    my first obstacle in learning PHP. I'm following the
    instructions to format
    the output of the tour price calculator, but my issue is with
    where to place
    the following PHP code: <?php setlocale(LC_MONETARY,
    'en_US'); echo
    money_format('%i', $tourPrice); ?>
    I placed it before the DOCTYPE and when that didn't work, I
    tried inserting
    right before the code that retrieves the tour price (in the
    body of the
    page). That didn't work either.
    I also tried changing money_format to number_format and
    manually inserting
    the $, but when I tested everything, the output printed as
    follows:
    The estimated cost of your tour is
    $0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000500.
    I'm not quite sure where I've gone wrong.

    Check the PHP documentation - it tells you all you need to
    know:
    http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.money-format.php

    I've no idea what relationship you have with "Training from
    the Source",
    but I find it interesting - to say the least - that you need
    to the ask
    the author of a rival book.

  • Missing File - Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion, and PHP

    On page 263 of Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion,
    and PHP by:Jeffrey Bardzel and Bob Flynn the file called
    countryDetailXML.asp is missing. How can I find that file? Any
    idea?
    Thanks for your help.

    @citaiz,
    That file is created earlier in the lesson in an exercise
    starting on page 257. For the sake of the lesson, you can use
    countryDetail.xml that is included in the lesson 09 start folder.
    It is not important for this lesson that the XML is a static file
    or one generated in real time from the database. The version of
    Spry (1.4) that shipped with DW CS3 used XML data only. The current
    version (1.6.1) can use JSON and HTML tables for the data source as
    well. You can get the latest version of Spry for free at
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/,
    including an extension to update your copy of DW to the latest
    version.

  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP coldfusion and PHP search?

    I am working through Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP
    coldfusion and PHP with the intent of creating a data base site
    that primarily requires a search engine on the index page. The
    search page in the book uses specific search criteria ensuring that
    there will always be a match to the data base but I need to create
    an input text field search engine. My Q, if there is no data within
    the data base that match the variable, will it return with an error
    requiring an argument in the code to respond to no matching data.
    Hopefully there are comprehensive online recourses for these search
    engines as they are so common. I am a complete newby to all aspects
    of web development and code so it will need to be a thorough
    explanation, an idiots guide. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED

    Rob,
    Let me try to answer your questions, understanding that my
    answers are laced with my experience and therefore my bias.
    1. For the most part the SQL that you write for Access, MS
    SQL or MySQL is going to be the same. I won't make that claim about
    Oracle or PostgreSQL because I have limited or no experience in
    those areas. To be sure when you head down the road with any DBMS
    there are finer points on 'value added' features (to over simplify
    things like MS SQL's Transact SQL), but for the most part when you
    are pulling out, inserting or deleting records the SQL that you
    write will be the same. In fact, I don't think I had to make any of
    the SQL in the book different to deal with the back end db.
    2. As for your host steering you away from MySQL, I don't
    know why that would be. It is MUCH more stable and robust than
    Access for web development. My research showed that you can use
    MySQL just fine with ASP though that clearly wouldn't be
    Microsoft's first choice.
    3. A quick aside, the fact that you are building ASP on a Mac
    would seem to indicate that you are developing on your production
    server. That's never a good idea. Go local if you can. If you have
    a newer Intel Mac you can use VM Fusion, Parallels or even Boot
    Camp to run Windows in a virtual environment and develop there,
    only moving your code to production when you are happy with it.
    There is of course the fact that they two environments would not be
    identical and you may need to change a few references, but it is
    still a better practice than developing on your live site. Some web
    hosts give you the ability to set up a subdomain. If yours does,
    you could set one up with a duplicate of your site and develop
    there.
    4. Let me try to pull your 'rant-let' apart into two issue. I
    begin with a question. I'm not sure what the Mac part has to do
    with it. The primary language I work in at my day job is
    ColdFusion. The majority of the most serious developers I know in
    the CF world work on Macs. I am forced into the PC world because of
    a cultural bias at the business school where I work. Having said
    that, the only time I have felt there was ANY difference in the
    tools, resources, choices I had was in any way affected by platform
    was when Adobe still had not released Flex Builder 2 for the Mac.
    Now that is behind us as well. This reaction of mine may be based
    on the fact that Access never comes into play in the work that I
    do. I regularly work with MS SQL and MySQL. (OK, so SQL Enterprise
    Manager, the MS tool of choice to talk to MS SQL is Windows only,
    but I only use that at the day job. But even there you can find
    cross-platform, free tools like Aqua Data Studio to talk from a Mac
    to MS SQL.) If I'm missing your point on the Mac, please let me
    know. Since the advent of the Intel Mac I think it is hands-down
    the best choice for a web developer. You can have Mac, Windows and
    Unix all on one machine. It doesn't get any better (providing you
    have the RAM :-)).
    As for the security question, it is somewhat analogous to the
    war on viruses and spyware. As the defenses get better, so do the
    attacks. Most languages have developed functions for vetting user
    input variables and best practices for building these things. It is
    mainly a user education issue. When I took over the book you are
    working out of, the one thing Jeffrey told me it needed was more
    security. I did my best to put more in under the constraints of the
    publisher. They didn't want the book to be any longer than the
    previous version. I did my best to modify the code used to include
    "string safe" functions and to add verbiage about the importance of
    security. It was clear that I could not add as much as was needed
    and I said so in the book. Much more is needed for a serious
    treatment of the subject and not acknowledging that would have been
    a disservice to the readers. I've been working as a developer for
    over a decade and I don't know all there is to know about it. It's
    a constantly changing field, just like all of web development. In
    fact next week I'm going through a 2-day SANS Web Application
    Security workshop in hopes of learning more. So at the risk of
    sounding like an industry apologist, I don't think it's a
    shortcoming of the development community. It is, as they say, "a
    developing situation".

  • Looking for a Coldfusion VPS Hosting Company

    Hi,
    Im looking for a Coldfusion VPS hosting company and my priority are:
    - Fast time response on Tickets;
    - Plesk enable;
    - MSSQL 2005 Server Access;
    Right now I'm using Gearworx and the service his not acceptable.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Yannick

    Thanks guys for your input.
    Im hosting right now with www.dailyrazor.com and I'm very satisfy with the helpdesk time respond and quality. But they don't offer Coldfusion VPS only linux.  I almost went with HMS but they don't offer Plesk for coldfusion VPS and I'm not to experience on IIS so I found another one called http://www.kickassvps.com/ that offer what I'm looking for at a affordable price.  they did answer my questions in a resonnable time period.
    Thanks again

  • Dreamweaver and Coldfusion or PHP

    Hi..
    I am setting up a user generated video site with online
    registration and flash video using alot of social media tagging
    type services. I'm new to web design and am using Dreamweaver to
    get me started. I am looking at using mySQL as the database and a
    specific company for the streaming hosting (any recomemndations
    welcome).
    My question is should I use PHP (which is free) as the
    application server or should I use Coldfusion (more expensive)?
    How well and importantly simply does either work with and
    when using Dreamweaver?
    If PHP works well with Dreamweaver for a beginner then I will
    go for this (is cheaper) but does anyone have any views on
    experience on PHP with dreamweaver?
    any help really appreciated
    Dan

    Both PHP and CF are lead-pipe simple with DW. Both are
    robustly supported.

  • Web Services with ColdFusion and PHP mixed

    Hi,
    We need to used web services provided by remote server. The
    problem is the
    remote server is on PHP and our server is on ColdFusion. Is
    there a way to
    use the web services on PHP server with our ColdFusion
    server?
    I understand ColdFusion automatically generate the WSDL by
    adding ?wsdl
    after the CFC, but I can't do the same thing because the
    remote server is
    not on ColdFusion. They have given us the wsdl web address,
    but it seems
    using the wsdl address directly without CFC is not working.
    Is that right?
    Please let me know.

    From the coldfusion side of things, it all seems okay what
    you are doing. It
    is an issue with the php/wsdl side of things. I can access
    the wsdl ok, but
    got the same error as PaulH just then when I tried to use web
    service in
    cf..

  • Code review for new coldfusion developer

    Hello all, my name's Oscar, and I've just created a little coldfusion framework for work to help us with some of our "legacy" systems (which all use a cms that bakes it's output.) And as I'm fairly new to coldfusion I wanted to see if you would mind quickly casting your eyes over what I've got and helping me improve my work with some of your hard earned experience.
    Everything I've got I've open sourced, and I've written an example application / readme with details about how to install it incase you want to try it out on your own system. I've a background in ruby, python, and php; so I've borrowed some conventions from frameworks like django and rails as I was building this, as well as dipping heavily into coldbox to get a better understanding of how to structure my cfml code.
    Here's the main repository for the project: https://github.com/binaryvision/pistachio.

  • Anyone use Flex with php for file upload? PHP Notice:  Undefined index:  Filedata

    My code works. It uploads the file and inputs the file name into a database, but I can't shake this php notice. I think php is looking for multipart/form-data from the HTML form tag.
    <form action="upload.php"  enctype="multipart/form-data"/>
    But I am using flex. The multipart/form-data info is sent as the second default argument of the upload() function. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.
    PHP Notice:  Undefined index:  Filedata
    $filename = $_FILES['Filedata']['name'];
    public function selectHandler(event:Event):void {
                    request = new URLRequest(UPLOAD_DIR);
                    try {
                        fileRef.upload(request);
                        textarea1.text = "Uploading " + fileRef.name + "...";
                    catch (error:Error) {
                        trace("Unable to upload file.");
                        textarea1.text += "\nUnable to upload file.";

    Hi, Thanks for your reply !
    Im not getting any errors Flex side, as i say i get a alert message saying the file has been uploaded so . .
    I am using a Wamp server on a windows machine, how do i check the file permissions on both the folder and the php file ?
    Also how do i debug a php file ?
    ANy help would be thankful !

  • Looking for 2 Product Solutions for eCommerce site created in Muse and published to BC

    Seeking suggestions for 2 separate BC eCommerce website product applications: I have within BC so far about 200 image in the in a folder in the "File Manager" -AND- each image has been optimized as a low-res digital image down-load product (divided among 20 catalogs).
    #1. Image downloads not for individual purchase but as (a bundle of 6 for one price) and (a bundle of 13 for second price) only.
    I'm trying to customize two BC products a 6 Pack & 13 Pack of digital image downloads. Normally in BC, a visitor could purchase a single image as a downloadable product and after successful check-out they would receive an email containing the download links. I need to disable single unit purchases and enable the customer to ONLY select 6 images for one price -or- select 13 images for one price. After successful check-out they would receive links for either 6 download files or 13 based on their purchase. They could also purchase multiple pack sets.
    #2. Allow the site visitor to select 12 images (from 200 images among 20 catalogs) for a 12 month custom calendar which would be printed and shipped. The BC product here would be a 12 month custom calendar. I have a product listed in BC as a "12-Month Custom Calender" and a display page titled the same. I have been looking into a drag n drop system that would allow the visitor to: purchase the product > select 12 images > submit their select by email to site admin.
    I have limited coding skill and I should mention that I originally created and continue to add-on to the site with Adobe Muse. Because I chose to use Muse, I have been looking for solutions that I can embed in Muse pages as "Objects" as Muse will over-write BC custom elements as it is over-written. I have looked at either using a 12 field drag n drop which might work but I can't determine how to make the 20 catalogs available on the same page to select from.
    Can ANYONE offer suggestions?
    Thanks

    Sorry but in no way will you get that to work using Muse.
    You need to custom trigger the core functionality BC fires to add to cart in the system as well as update the visuals etc, and also overcome some of the BC scripting and what that does and function overrides etc. You need a high end front end developer at the least to be able to help you, and not using Muse.

  • From PHP to JSP for a search-responder.php

    I have been asked to use the "search-as-you-type" solution offered up by Google at [http://code.google.com/p/search-as-you-type/|http://code.google.com/p/search-as-you-type/]. The documentation offered by Google is pretty much straight forward but of course the actual piece of code that gets the data is built in PHP and my client needs this to be used on a page serving up JSP.
    I am learning JSP and moving from PHP and ASP and learning quickly but not quick enough to finish the project.
    Would anyone be able and willing to help me convert the functions in the following PHP code into JSP?
    Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me.

    Thanks for your comment Gimbal2.
    I have already been thoroughly surprised at how different JSP is from PHP. I am finding quite hard to wrap my head around the whole process to be honest.
    I am beginning to see that JSP and PHP work in a totally different way than each other.
    I am not technically trying to translate or convert the PHP file as much as I am trying to build a file in JSP that does the same functions. The main functions of the PHP script are commented by Google and should be easily enough re-written in JSP in order to produce similar results.
    Since the output needs to be in a JSON format when passed to the .js file you'd think this would be better suited as a .jsp file as well or even a JAVA Applet, Servlet or even a bean. Since the whole site is already built in JSP for a multitude of other functions it seems likely that adding on more to read data from a source file and send it back to the .JS would be straight forward, but I could be wrong. But again I am not familiar enough with JAVA or JSP (yet) to make heads or tails of this.

  • Is there a guide for starting coldfusion development on Ubuntu?

    I have successfully installed coldfusion on Ubuntu 13.10, but as a newbie to Ubuntu I am looking for a guide on the best way to continue from here?
    For example, I can view the CFADMIN at "http://localhost:8500/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm", but am having difficulties viewing test documents placed in the wwwroot folder.
      Wayne

    Dear Anit
    Thank you so much for all the help!  The general guide on the differences immediately solved one problem once I changed the name of "application.cfm" to "Application.cfm"
    I am far from a "power user", but am enjoying the learning process.  Inevitably I find that most of my encountered problems are associatied with permissions.
    For a few brief years I was a cf developer, but now work in the tennis field at a large club.  I developed an application which saved me hours and hours of work, and this application has become a key element in the whole summer program.  Unfortunately, after migrating to CF10 from CF9 I can no longer connect to smtp.gmail.com (after hours and hours of searching for a work-around).  Luckily I still had the same application on an older laptop, which was using CF9 ... and so I was still able to work as I wanted.
    I decided to partition my new laptop to see if CF10 would work as I needed on Ubuntu.... which explains my intial posting.
    I am very happy to report that, with your help, I have had success.  For the record this is what I did
    after installing Ubuntu I followed this great guide:  http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-apache-and-coldfusion-9-on-ubuntu-9.04 (of course installing the downloaded CF10 and not CF9)
    BUT, the apache connector didn't work for me. (this was before the above posting of Anit's ... and as a Ubuntu newbe I couldn't see any way forward)
    so I uninstalled coldfusion and reinstalled ... as a standalone server
    no problem at all viewing the CF Admin page
    after installing and running msql, I imported my club database and application files
    not a problem creating the appropriate datasource within CF Admin
    BUT, I couldn't view my application in a browser after moving it to the "wwwroot" folder
    finally I (fortuitously) changed the permissions on this application folder so that I had appropriate rights ... which had a GUI allowing me to do so, otherwise I think I never would have done it alone!
    Immediately I could view index.cfm, but then I would have a DATASOURCE error when I drilled down
    Once I saw that "application.cfm" had to have a capital "A" i.e. "Aplication.cfm" everything worked
    went to "mail" under CF Admin. Verifying my mail server was at first annoying.  Port 465 with TLS checked didn't work ... but then port 587 verified!
    a test email to myself using my application in the browser proved successful...yay!
    If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!
    Again Anit, thank you for your help!

  • Looking for Online Coldfusion Tutor

    Hello, I'm looking for a tutor to work with me and teach me advanced topics/techniques in coldfusion.
    I think this can be done easily using the phone and join.me.
    Does anyone know of any coldfusion tutors or websites that I can find someone?
    Please email me at [email protected]
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve

    And how *would* you expect a ColdFusion page to display from your computer when you don't have ColdFusion installed? Seeing as you can get a completely free developer edition, what's the reason you don't want to just install it? It would make your life much easier.
