For loop example

I've had a quick flick through the headers but can't find if this has been posted before, apologies if it has been covered. I have the JDK 1.6.0 and I use TextPad to compile and run Java. The simple example I have in a textbook does not work:
for (int i=10;i=0;i--)
System.out.printlin(i);
If I compile as above, I get:
C:\Fiona\java\FlatBroke.java:8: incompatible types
found : int
required: boolean
          for(int i=10;i=0;i--)
          ^
1 error
Tool completed with exit code 1
BTW, the ^ appears underneath the "=" in the part of the for statement "i=0", it doesn't seem to paste properly here.
If I change the line to for (int i=10;i<0;i--) it compiles OK but running the app, produces no output, ie ignore system.print etc statement.
Help?

for (int i=10;i=0;i--)
System.out.printlin(i);
If I compile as above, I get:
C:\Fiona\java\FlatBroke.java:8: incompatible types
found : int
required: boolean
          for(int i=10;i=0;i--)
          ^
1 errorYou're confusing assignment and equality tests. The middle expression in a for loop should be an expression whose value is a boolean. But in "i=0", the single equals sign means assignment. You're setting i to zero there. The value of an assignment expression is the value assigned -- in this case, an integer.
So the compiler is complaining because the expression should be boolean-valued, but what you gave it is integer-valued.
You probably meant to do "i==0" instead -- but that's wrong anyway, as we'll see...
If I change the line to for (int i=10;i<0;i--) it
compiles OK but running the app, produces no output,
ie ignore system.print etc statement.That's because the loop ends as soon as the expression is false. "i<0" evaluates to true only if i is greater than zero -- but you've just set it to 10, which is greater than zero.
What you probably want to do in this loop, is "i > 0".

  • FOR loop messes up the DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_BACKTRACE

    Hello!
    I've encountered the following problem which could be resolved for now
    by eliminating FOR loop, but that's not a good solution.
    The problem is that if some exception is raised inside the `for' loop
    with cursor, and the outer block contains exception handler with
    `format_error_backtrace' call, the last one shows not the exact line
    where the exception was raised, but the loop beginning. Let me show
    you.
    The next block loops over some table and tries to assign one of the
    field's value to local variable with intentionally low
    precision. Please look at line where exception is raised:

      7      x := x_r.xlong;
      8    end loop;
      9* end;

    Next, I'll put exception handler with `format_error_message' call in
    it:
    ========================================
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  declare
      2    x number(1);

      5    loop
      6      dbms_output.put_line('Processing... '|| x_r.xlong);
      7      x := x_r.xlong;
      8    end loop;
      9  exception

    Now look how line number changed; instead of 7'th line it is 4'th

      6    open x_c;
      7    loop
      8      fetch x_c into x_r;
      9      exit when x_c%notfound;
    10      dbms_output.put_line('Processing... '|| x_r.xlong);
    11      x := x_r.xlong;
    12    end loop;
    13    close x_c;
    14  exception
    15    when others then
    16      dbms_output.put_line(dbms_utility.format_error_backtrace);
    17* end;
    SQL> /

    ORA-06512: at line 11========================================
    Here we see that line number where exception was raised is now
    correct!
    I suppose the problem is in some hidden exception handling behind the
    `for' loop execution. Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    uj2,
    I think the reason is probably PL/SQL optimisation. Because you are using backtrace, it means you are on 10g. This means you have an automatic PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL of 2. At this level, the compiler will re-write your cursor-for-loop to array fetches "under the covers", so my feeling is that the internal code re-organisation might have something to do with it.
    Can you try your cursor-for-loop example with these settings:
    ALTER SESSION SET PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL = 0;
    ALTER SESSION SET PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL = 1;
    Neither of these levels optimise cursor-for-loops.
    The reason your explicit fetch doesn't display the same behaviour is that the compiler doesn't optimise those.
    Of course I could be wrong, but this is where I'd start testing.
    Regards

    Okay. Accpeting that the design is not favorable and not advantageous when my program expands. I have begin to follow producer/consumer programming architecture.
    Please find the attached program which is a simple producer consumer with event structure. I wonder how could I stop looping around the producer and consumer loops over and over again. I am pretty sure that this ENQUEUE ELEMENT loops back to the consumer loop and starts from begining.
    I hope my first program in PC architecture with State machine and Event structure is correct.

  • How to pass the sequence number of current loop in a for loop in FPGA vi to the host

    PCI-7830R
    LV 8.2
    What I was trying to do is to use multiple DIO to generate pulse at different sequence. Mode one is to automatically sweep from DIO1 to DIO20; mode 2 is several DIOs generate pulse simoutaneously.  So I use a case structure to make the selection, in the mean time, I set up two for loop in each case so that I can use multiple pulse generations. For example, in scanning mode, if I set 2 exposures, it sweeps from 1 to 20 then do it again.
    Then I need to get the loop sequence number, i of each scenario. So I put an indicator within the first loop, and create a local variable of it and put in the second one.  Running the FPGA vi alone, I can see the indicator change in each case from 0 to N-1, N being the for loop time.But in the host vi, I tried to add this indicator as an element in the read/write invoke method, in the debugging mode, I could only see it directly jump to N-1 without all the changes I saw in FPGA vi.
    Is it possible to get this number passed correctly from FPGA vi to the host vi? Thanks

    Thanks for the reply Jared.
    Excuse me if it looks incorrect, but I'm new to FPGA programming, so I would have to look into the FIFO you referred to.  I used local variables because for one thing I have several different cases containing for loop in each of them, and I only want one indicator for the "i".  If I put the indicator out of any for loop, it's only gonna show the last number which is N-1.  For the other thing, it seems like property nodes are not allowed in FPGA vi.  And by doing this, I can see the i number changing from 0 to N-1 in each case, well, in FPGA vi's front panel.  But while I ran the host vi with everything, the indicator in host vi's front panel only showed the last number N-1. It may be the reason you said, it happened too fast before the indicator in host vi can catch it.
    What I want to realize is to group the data I collect in host vi, for example, when I choose multiple exposure in each mode, and the FPGA runs 1 through 20 then do it again, I want the data stored in two groups using the loop sequence number as the seperator in file name.  So it goes like 1-1, 2-1.......20-1; then 1-2, 2-2,.....20-2.

  • How do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    how do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    The if statement in LabVIEW is the Case structure. You can find that on the Structures palette right next to the For Loop. If you're still on the same subject about terminating a for loop early, then what you do is enclose your functions inside the loop with a case statment and make one of the case's empty except for one or more constants that you might have to wire. Hopefully, the attached picture will explain what I mean. Also, as I mentioned in one of your other posts, I think this technique is not as good as using a while loop. The array in the attached example is the same size no matter what and you may have to handle stripping extra or invalid elements.

  • Why use cursor and for loop?

    Hi All
    So in general why would we use a cursor and a for loop to do update in a stored procedure?
    Why wouldnt we just use a single update statement ?
    is there compelling reason for using a cursor and a for loop: I am reading some code from a co-worker that the business logic for the select (set need to be updated) is complex but the update logic is simple (just set a flag to (0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4).
    But eventually the select come down to a key (row_id) so I re-write it using just a single sql statement.
    The size of the main table is about 2.6 to 3million rows
    Any thoughts on that??

    Adding my sixpence...
    PL/SQL is not that different from a SQL perspective than any other SQL client language like Java or C# or C/C++. PL/SQL simply integrates the 2 languages a heck of a lot better and far more transparent than the others. But make no mistake in that PL/SQL is also a "client" language from a SQL perspective. The (internal) calls PL/SQL make to the SQL engine, are the same (driver) calls made to the SQL engine when using Java and C and the others.
    So why a cursor and loops in PL/SQL? For the same reason you have cursors and loops in all these other SQL client languages. There are the occasion that you need to pull data from the SQL engine into the local language to perform some very funky and complex processing that is not possible using the SQL language.
    The danger is using client cursor loop processing as the norm - always pulling rows into the client language and crunching it there. This is not very performant. And pretty much impossible to scale. Developers in this case views the SQL language as a mere I/O interface for reading and writing rows. As they would use the standard file I/O read() and write() interface calls.
    Nothing could be further from the truth. SQL is a very advance and sophisticated data processing language. And it will always be faster than having to pull rows to a client language and process them there. However, SQL is not Turing complete. It is not the procedural type language that most other languages we use, are. For that reason there are things that we cannot do in SQL. And that should be the only reason for using the client language, like PL/SQL or the others, to perform row crunching using a client cursor loop.

  • How do I use an enhanced for loop / for each on my ViewObjectImpl ?

    Guys and Gals,
    With all of my newly acquired Java knowledge in tow, I spent this weekend cleaning up all of my code, dealing mainly with for loops. I converted them from a huge mess to a for each type loop using language such as ...
        RowSet priceUpdateRows = (RowSet)((PriceUpdatesViewRowImpl) priceUpdate).getPriceUpdateRowsView();
        for (Row priceUpdateRow: priceUpdateRows)
        { // do operations on row... which makes perfect sense to me. For each Row in the RowSet, do something. It doesn't, however, makes sense to the compiler. It pouts and gives me a "foreach not applicable to expression type" error. So I read up on iterators and such, messed with code examples, and still can't get the RowSet to iterate with the above code. Could I make RowSet implement Iterable? How would I do that? I tried to create a class called RowSetExt which extended RowSet and implemented Iterable, but then I got a class cast exception.
    I know I could implement something like the following or a while(hasNext()) but they're really not what I'm looking for.
    ViewObject vo = … < Get ViewObject > …
    RowSetIterator rsi = vo.createRowSetIterator("rowsRSI");
    while (rsi.hasNext())
         Row row = rsi.next();
         row.setAttribute("YourAttribute",your_value);
         rsi.closeRowSetIterator();How do I make the for(Row row : <RowSet>) example work? Or could someone point me in a direction?
    Will

    One thing I tried was to make a framework extension class for my ViewObjectImpls
    public class PcsViewObjectImpl
      extends ViewObjectImpl
      implements Iterable<Row>
      Set<Row> set = new HashSet<Row>();
      public Iterator<Row> getRows()
        return set.iterator();
      public Iterator<Row> iterator()
        return getRows();
    }AppModuleImpl
        PriceUpdateRowsViewRowImpl priceUpdateRows = (PriceUpdateRowsViewRowImpl)((PriceUpdatesViewRowImpl) priceUpdate).getPriceUpdateRowsView();
        for (Row priceUpdateRow: priceUpdateRows)
        {However, this gives me a class cast exception at runtime. But I would think some kind of extension class would be the way to go ... ?

    Hi everyone!
    Is there an array and FOR loops in ABAP similar to the C Language?
    If there is, please give example. _
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    There is no array concept in ABAP but there are field-symbols which are same as pointers in C.As for the FOR loop there is no such command in SAP/ABAP but we do have the do..while and loop...endloop commands.There is also CASE statements and if..endif commands.

  • For loop stop in sub vi from main vi?

    Hi! I want to control from my main vi a sub vi consisting of a stepped sine function generator. This sub vi has a for loop. The problem is that I want to have the option of terminating the loop in the sub vi from the main vi. I tryed using global variables or an event stucture. A lot of things changed in the last 6 years, so this thread is a bit stale and there are a few other ways to do it. (For example we can have a FOR loop with a conditional terminal).
    You don't provide enough information to answer your question why it crashes. It would be more interesting to know what you are "using" and not what you are "not using". This is not something we can guess by elimination.
    LabVIEW should never crash, so please show us the code that crashes so NI can fix it. What LabVIEW version are you using?

  • How do i sweep two voltage at the same time by using for loop ?

    Hello, Can anyone help me on this topic ?
    My problem is to sweep Vds and Vgs as same time vs Id in MOSFET by using for loop. I also use the Agilent power supply source. Let me tell a litle bit about what i'm doing. For different value of Vds, i will get Vgs vs Id curve. (The x axis is Vgs, the y-axis is Id).
    I started to create two for-loop, the inner to sweep Vgs, and the outer one to sweep Vds. My problem is don't know how to connect all the wire in  the for loop.
    In the for loop i saw N, i icon. Suppose I have the two variable for Vgs such as Vgs start and Vgs_stop. Should the Vgs_start( or Vgs_stop) be connected to N or leave it in the for_loop ?
     for example: I want to sweep Vgs from 0(for Vgs_start)  to  5(Vgs_strop) V, and the step increment is .5V how do i connect these variables in the for loop ?
    Thank you for your time
    Ti Nguyen

    It is easier to use a while loop.  Dennis beat me to the punch.  Here is my solution:
    You can remove the flat sequence structure if you use Error In and Error Out to ensure the execution flow will occur in the proper order.  Be sure to include the delay time in the loop so that your vi doesn't hog all the CPU time.

  • How can I have each pass through a for loop communicate with a new indicator?

    Hello,
    I am using 16 color boxes to indicate how 16 channels are behaving.  If a color box is blue, its respective channel is running correctly, red means it has failed etc.  I am continuously checking each channel using a loop, and I wanted to update the channel colors every loop.  I have made an array of 16 numbers corresponding to the color I wish to have (which are blue = running, red = failed, green = completed, black = not in use).  However, I cannot find a way to pull these 16 numbers out of the array and to the color boxes short of 16 index arrays connected to the color boxes.
    I understand how to convert each individual number to a color, I just don't know how to use a 16 times for loop to communicate with a different color box each pass through.  Is there any way to do this or should I just go for brute force?
    Thank you.

  • Can I exit a FOR loop before it has completed its iterations?

    Or is there a way to easily slave a while loop to an array input? I essentially need to search an array for a specific entry. Non of the built in VI's will search the array the way I need to do it. I tried wiring the array to a while loop and searching each element, but if the match is never found, the while loop never returns. Is there a setting on a while loop to force it to return if an input array completes?
    The For loop will work, but it forces me to step through the entire array each time and I have to play games to ignore values after I have found and set the one I need.
    Thanks for any help
    Chris

    Hello –
    I am attaching a very simple example program to show what Alberto and Dennis explained (or at least what I understood their approach would be, please apologize if I misunderstood).
    Another option is to use the Search 1D Array function, located in the Functions >> All Functions >> Array subpalette.
    Hope this helps.

  • For loop issue and error exception

    I am finishing up a program and having a few issues....I can send my instructions so it may seem easier to what I want...the first issue deals with the for loop for the 2nd for loop in the actionperformed when i click on go it does not change any of the boxes to yellow
    Also when I check for errors it does not check with the code I have...I know it says on the instructions to use try\catch but I am just going to use if statements because I am not very familar with the try\catch and will accept some points takin off...any help with this by tonight id really appreciate it as long as noone is too busy...Thanks
    instructions:
    This will incorporate arrays, for loops, and Frames all in one.
    Create a panel containing an array of 16 TextArea components that change color to correspond with the start, stop, and step values entered by the user. Perform the following tasks to create the Checkerboard Array application shown below. When the user enters the start, stop, and step fields and then clicks the Go button, the results are also shown below.
    1.     Call your application Checkerboard.java
    2.     You will need the following variables declare them as private:
    a.     16 component TextArea array
    b.     a Panel to hold the array
    c.     3 TextField components with length of 10
    d.     3 int variables to receive the start, stop, and step values
    e.     3 Labels to display the words Start, Stop, and Step
    f.     a Go button
    g.     a Clear button
    h.     a Panel to hold the 3 TextFields, 3 Labels, and the 2 Buttons
    3.     Create a constructor method to:
    a.     construct each of the components declared above and initializes the start, stop, and step variables to zero (when constructing the TextArea components, use the following parameters: null, 3, 5, 3)
    b.     set the Frame layout to BorderLayout
    c.     write a for loop to loop the array and set each of the 16 TextArea components in that array so they cannot be edited. In the same loop, set each of the TextArea components text to be 1 more than the index number. Also in this same loop, set the background of each of the TextArea components to white.
    d.     set the Panel for the TextArea components to GridLayout with 4 rows, 4 columns, and both gaps set to 10
    e.     set the Panel for the TextFields, Labels, and button to GridLayout with 3 rows, 3 columns, and both gaps set to 5
    f.     add the components to their respective Panels
    g.     make the buttons clickable
    h.     place the Panels in the Frame put one in the NORTH and one in the CENTER
    i.     Enter the addWindowListener() method described in the chapter this is the method that overrides the click of the X so it terminates the application
    4.     In your actionPerformed() method:
    a.     convert the data in your TextFields to int and store them in the variables declared above
    b.     write a loop that goes through the array setting every background color to blue
    c.     write another loop thats based on the user inputs. Each time the loop is executed, change the background color to yellow (so start your loop at the users specified starting condition. Youll stop at the users specified stopping value. Youll change the fields to yellow every time you increment your loop based on the step value. REMEMBER: Your displayed values are 1 off from your index numbers!!)
    5.     Write a main() method that creates an instance of the Checkerboard Frame.
    a.     set the bounds for the frame to 50, 100, 300, 400
    b.     set the title bar caption to Checkerboard Array
    c.     use the setVisible() method to display the application Frame during execution
    6.     After you get all of this complete, include error handling to make sure:
    a.     the values entered in the TextFields are valid integers
    b.     the start value is greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 16
    c.     the stop value is greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 16
    d.     the step value is greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 16
    e.     the start condition is less than the stop condition
    f.     when an error occurs, give an error message in a dialog box that is specific to their error, remove the text from the invalid field, and put the cursor in that field so the user has a chance to re-enter this can be accomplished by using multiple try/catch statements
    g.     only change the colors if the numbers are valid
    7.     Create a clear button as seen in the example below. This button should:
    a.     clear out all 3 TextFields
    b.     change the background color of all TextArea array elements to white
    c.     put the cursor in the start field
    8.     Document!!

  • Closing a serial port after executing a for loop of write and reads.

    Hello,
    Labview is opening and then closing each write to the port. I have tried to leave the close outside of the for loop, but labview wont allow it. What do I need to change to make all the writes and reads execute on 1 open and close of the serial port.?
    Thanks.

         The program that you posted looks to be ok for the most part, you might consider putting an open after your configure (but that's trivial). The other thing that is a minor issue is the loop tunnel coming out of your for loop is currently being auto-indexed.  This function is used to index data for each interation of the loop.  You are using a static address (not an array) and so you don't need this.  If you right-click and remove the auto-index the broken wire will go away. Other than that it should be ok.
         I would suggest looking at one of the shipping examples that come with LabVIEW.  "Basic Serial Read and Write" is essentially the same thing that you are doing and is tested here and might save you a bit of time.  Anyway, take a look if you have a second. Best of luck with your application!
