FOR LOOP LIMITATION

Hi again..
I´d like to know if any of you know why the code below returns this error:
ORA-01426: numeric overflow.
It seems that the FOR-LOOP variable which in this case is represented by I doesn´t hold as much data as a NUMBER variable. How much data does this internal variable hold?
DECLARE
  NUM1 NUMBER := 59171108702;
  NUM2 NUMBER := 59171108702;
BEGIN
  FOR I IN NUM1 .. NUM2 LOOP
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('NUM: ' || I);
  END LOOP;
EXCEPTION
  WHEN OTHERS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (SQLERRM);
END;Ohh, I´d also like to know how I can post code here.
Chears,
Bruno

    Why don't For-Loops have a premature exit capability --- i.e. why didn't
    NI include the exit capability that exists in other languages? Is it a dataflow
    thing? I don't see how. Just curious.

    Jay,
    I have to say I`m no programming Guru, but isn`t a State Maschine based on a
    case (Switch) statement? This statement does allow the user to hop to and
    fro within a certian pre-defined space, but the use of a GOTO is, as far as
    I am aware, not limited to a particular region of the code. At least with a
    switch statement (Case) the beginning point of each "choice" is well defined
    and fixed, therefore reducing the change of mistakes.
    just my 2 cents

    Hi all,
    Pls tell me how can v use FOR LOOP IN JSP STRUTS without using scriplets and collections .
    suppose i want to display 20 times "hello world "in jsp .How can i display it using STRUTS as conventionally scriplets are not allowed in it.
    and Iterator is only for Collections .

  • How to control the looping time of the for loop in 10 microseconds in labview?

    I need to create a +/- 9 volt square wave with period of 20us using a D/A card (Not NI card). I can write command to the card using outport provide by Labview. Right now, I can generate square wave with 4ms period which is limited by the resolution of the wait until next ms icon I used inside the for loop. Could anyone tell me how to control the execution time of the for loop to about 10 us? Your help would be much appreciated.

  • For loop won't output

    Howdy everyone!  First time NI forum user, not a very long time Labview user.  Been thrown into this program via the teacher with no schooling whatsoever.  I have a .vi attached, where for some reason my for loop is not outputting any data.  I am sure that I will have further questions when this gets solved, but this does not make sense.  I am sure I have all kinds of rookie mistakes.  Thanks in advance!

    Can I post more than one question on here?  I need to put a sensor in this system after ther State Space Eqns, with ±0.1m limits and 12 bit precision.  I can use the mask and limit .vi to keep the ±0.1m, but what do I do about the 12 bit resolution?

  • Collection-Based For Loop Troubles!

    I am trying to compile this code from the book "Beginning Java 2: JDK 5 Edition" by Ivor Horton, using XCode on a Mac with SDK 1.4 (I know that the book is for JDK 5, but I figure that the first 5 chapters or so are going to be basic enough that it won't matter?):
    public class StringTokenizing {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    String text = "To be or not to be, that is the question.";
    String delimiters = "[, .]";
    int[] limits = {0, -1};
    for(int limit : limits) {
    System.out.println("\nAnalysis with limit = " + limit);
    String[] tokens = text.split(delimiters, limit);
    System.out.println("Number of tokens: " + tokens.length);
    for(String token : tokens) {
    System.out.println(token);
    But, just as with EVERY code involving collection-based for loops -- In this case, the "for(int limit : limits)" statement, etc -- the compiler won't do it. The error points to that line and just says "; expected" as if it has no idea what to do with for loops that are not in the for (x ; x ; x) format...
    ...Grrrr. This is really starting to make it impossible to follow the examples in the book. Can someone help me?
    Thanks!

  • State Diagram inside For Loop

    I created a fairly involved for-loop with a flat sequence inside of it.  The sequence had about four events that occured, and since it was kind of ugly, I thought I'd try the State Diagram Toolkit to replace the majority of the code.  When I selected state diagram from the pallete, I was outside my for-loop.  I drew up the various states/transitions, then realized that all this code needed to be inside the for-loop, but LV won't let me place state diagram-generated code inside the for-loop.  I select everything related to the state diagram, but when I drag into the for-loop, only the comments come inside.  I even tried generating a new for-loop and placing the state code inside.  No luck. Any thoughts?

    "Any thoughts?"
    Yes but not any that will help.
    1) Just modify your SD so that the exit loops back to the start while there are still things to do. Forget the outer For loop.
    2) THe observations you reported are correct. When I first discovered these limitiations I said "That sucks!". Since then I have learned a bit and have grown to love the SDE.
    The SDE is JUST (note: "just" is a four letter word around here ) a LV application that ofers a very limited GUI consisting of a picture control that then scripts (see LAVA Scripting Forum for info on scripting) your SD for you. SCripting LV code is no easy task. My experiments with scripting has shown that I have to keep a database of the contents of the LV diagram my code is developing to keep track of what is where. Well it turns out that the structure of a LV diagram is a lot like the structure of a FP in that you start with a "root" object either the FP or the BD. THe BD then has structures on it, like seq's loops etc with unlited nesting possible.
    Now the SD created by the SDE is really just a fancy while loop with an case structure and code to support the driving enum. In order for you to be able to edit the SD the SDE needs to know what is htere already so it can show the diagram. It "KNOWS" by looking at its internal DB (I believe is stored inside of VI along with the enum.ctl) of the SD. To keep the DB updated, the SDE must be used to manipulate the SD.
    Stop rambling and guessing and get to the point!
    Moving the SD is just not supported by the SDE so it can not be done. To do so would require the SDE be able to "look" at the diagram, and repeat all of its work in the new location in the diagram.
    BTW: Thank you for trying out and asking about the SDE. the more talking we do on this subject, the sooner the SDE will be updated.
    My SDE wishlist (partial)
    Add comments to diagram from SDE screen.
    Add data structures to SD (shift registers) from SDE screen.
    Add "un-do".
    Select multiple objects on SDE screen and move or allign.
    Select multiple objects on SDE screen and do "create sub-State-Diagram".
    Allow watching more than one SDE in execution highlighting at the same time.

  • Using a For Loop Index for Array Element Number?

    Hi.  Thanks in advance for the help.  I can't seem to find what I want to do here using the search function... probably because I don't know how to frame the question appropriately.  Ignore the title to this post cause it's probably wrong vocabulary for what I want to do.
    Here's the situation:
    I have a 2D array where the first column is the X data and each subsequent column is Y data (call it Y1...Yn).  The n-value varies from run to run (some runs have 4 columns of data, some have 20), but that is easily gathered when reading the data file.  I need to perform a number of operations on each set of data, the least of which is smoothing the data and graphing it, so I'm limiting my discussion to these 2 operations.
    What I want is a for loop structure where the indexing of the loop tracks the Y1...Yn columns, grabs each column for the iteration, performs the relevant analysis, and spits out the result, but in a stackable manner.  Thus the title; I want to use the for loop's index to mark the array element for building a new array.
    See the image attached.  A 2D array of 9 columns (X, Y1...Y8) is analyzed such that each data set, (X, Y1), (X, Y2)...(X, Y8) is bundled, graphed, run through a B-spline Fit, of which is also graphed.  I need to replace this with something that looks like the for loop structure shown.
    I just don't know how to get those two data bundles [(X, Yi) and it's smoothed pair] out of the for loop in a stacked set from every iteration of the for loop.
    Again the title, I think I want to build a new array where i use the index of the for loop to control the entries of the new array.  But I can't see how to do that.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello H.R. Dunham, and welcome to the forum!
    It seems that you may be looking for Auto-Indexing, a basic feature of loops in LabVIEW.  You'll need to transpose your array before wiring it into the for loop, as elements are auto-indexed by row before column, but at that point you should be able to operate on each column and output an array of n cluster elements corresponding to your input columns.  Auto-indexing tunnels look like brackets to indicate each element will be indexed automatically- this should be the default when wiring an array into a for loop or when wiring anything out of a for loop.
    As for how to build your pairs, I suggest removing the X column and creating a "starter" cluster containing your X data and placeholder Y data before entering your "Y" processing loop.  Use the bundle by name function in the for loop to insert your processed column data into the cluster and auto-index the cluster output. Flow would be something like this:
    1) Gather data
    2) Split X and Y using standard array operations
    3) Create "template" cluster with shared X data
    4) Pass template cluster and Y-column array into an auto-indexed for loop.
    5) Insert processed Y data into cluster inside loop.
    6) Auto-index cluster data out of loop.
    This tutorial is probably also a good place to get started:

    Hope that helps!

  • How can I repeat a for loop, once it's terms has been fulfilled???

    Well.. I've posted 2 different exceptions about this game today, but I managed to fix them all by myself, but now I'm facing another problem, which is NOT an error, but just a regular question.. HOW CAN I REPEAT A FOR LOOP ONCE IT HAS FULFILLED IT'S TERMS OF RUNNING?!
    I've been trying many different things, AND, the 'continue' statement too, and I honestly think that what it takes IS a continue statement, BUT I don't know how to use it so that it does what I want it too.. -.-'
    Anyway.. Enought chit-chat. I have a nice functional game running that maximum allows 3 apples in the air in the same time.. But now my question is: How can I make it create 3 more appels once the 3 first onces has either been catched or fallen out the screen..?
    Here's my COMPLETE sourcecode, so if you know just a little bit of Java you should be able to figure it out, and hopefully you'll be able to tell me what to do now, to make it repeat my for loop:

                        player.player_x -= player.movement_speed;
                   else if(move_right)

  • Getting the label of a JButton in a for loop

    hi,
    I doing a project for my course at the minute and im in need of a bit of help. I have set up 1-d array of buttons and i have layed them out using a for loop. I have also added an annoymous action listener to each button in the loop. It looks something lke this:
    b = new JButton[43];
    for (int i=1; i<43; i++)
    b[i] = new JButton(" ");
    b.addActionListener(
    new ActionListener()
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
              System.out.println("..........");
    }); // addActionListener
    } // for
    I want the "System.out.println( ..." line, to print out the "i" number of the button that was pressed but i cannot figure out how to do it. I cannot put "System.out.println(" "+i);" as it wont recognise i as it is not inside the for loop. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!!

    class ButtonExample extends JFrame implements ActionListener{The OP wanted to have anonymous listeners, not a subclassed JFrame
    listening to the buttons. I don't know if the following is the best design,

                buttons[i] = new JButton("button #" + i);
                buttons.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
    System.out.println("number " + ii);
    gui.add(buttons[i]);
    return gui;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    ButtonExample app = new ButtonExample();
    JPanel gui = app.createGUI();
    JFrame f = new JFrame("ButtonExample");

  • How to pass the sequence number of current loop in a for loop in FPGA vi to the host

    PCI-7830R
    LV 8.2
    What I was trying to do is to use multiple DIO to generate pulse at different sequence. Mode one is to automatically sweep from DIO1 to DIO20; mode 2 is several DIOs generate pulse simoutaneously.  So I use a case structure to make the selection, in the mean time, I set up two for loop in each case so that I can use multiple pulse generations. For example, in scanning mode, if I set 2 exposures, it sweeps from 1 to 20 then do it again.
    Then I need to get the loop sequence number, i of each scenario. So I put an indicator within the first loop, and create a local variable of it and put in the second one.  Running the FPGA vi alone, I can see the indicator change in each case from 0 to N-1, N being the for loop time.But in the host vi, I tried to add this indicator as an element in the read/write invoke method, in the debugging mode, I could only see it directly jump to N-1 without all the changes I saw in FPGA vi.
    Is it possible to get this number passed correctly from FPGA vi to the host vi? Thanks

    Thanks for the reply Jared.
    Excuse me if it looks incorrect, but I'm new to FPGA programming, so I would have to look into the FIFO you referred to.  I used local variables because for one thing I have several different cases containing for loop in each of them, and I only want one indicator for the "i".  If I put the indicator out of any for loop, it's only gonna show the last number which is N-1.  For the other thing, it seems like property nodes are not allowed in FPGA vi.  And by doing this, I can see the i number changing from 0 to N-1 in each case, well, in FPGA vi's front panel.  But while I ran the host vi with everything, the indicator in host vi's front panel only showed the last number N-1. It may be the reason you said, it happened too fast before the indicator in host vi can catch it.
    What I want to realize is to group the data I collect in host vi, for example, when I choose multiple exposure in each mode, and the FPGA runs 1 through 20 then do it again, I want the data stored in two groups using the loop sequence number as the seperator in file name.  So it goes like 1-1, 2-1.......20-1; then 1-2, 2-2,.....20-2.

  • How do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    how do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    The if statement in LabVIEW is the Case structure. You can find that on the Structures palette right next to the For Loop. If you're still on the same subject about terminating a for loop early, then what you do is enclose your functions inside the loop with a case statment and make one of the case's empty except for one or more constants that you might have to wire. Hopefully, the attached picture will explain what I mean. Also, as I mentioned in one of your other posts, I think this technique is not as good as using a while loop. The array in the attached example is the same size no matter what and you may have to handle stripping extra or invalid elements.

  • If statement doesn't affect for loop

    I wrote a function within a function to control 2 Tweens.
    (the 2nd one isnt in the function, it's called)
    My problem is... is that it works for the first time.. the button is hovered over and all the other buttons show themselves and then disappear again, except the one you're over. Then I do it a 2nd time and it doesn't work. why is it only working right one time? and why isn't the if statement I put in the local function affecting the for loop? The 2nd time it takes the button you're hovering over with it and fades it out. (even though the if statement registers according to trace)
    this is the code
    import fl.transitions.Tween;
    import fl.transitions.easing.*;
    var shortInst:Array = [btn1, btn2, btn3, exit];
    var objTween:Tween;
    function mouseOff(e:Event):void {
         if (e.currentTarget.alpha !== 0) {
              objTween = new Tween(e.currentTarget, "alpha", None.easeOut, 1, 0, 0.25, true);
    var eTimer:Timer = new Timer(3000, 1); //timer that only runs once (in ms)
    function navFX(e:Event):void {
         for (var i:Number = 0; i < shortInst.length; i++) {
              objTween = new Tween(shortInst[i], "alpha", None.easeOut, 0, 1, 0.25, true);
              eTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, local);
              eTimer.start();
              function local(t:TimerEvent):void {
                   trace("e.target in local func: " + e.target);
                   for (var i:Number = 0; i < shortInst.length; i++) {
                        if (shortInst[i] !== e.target) {
                        shortInst[i].dispatchEvent(new Event(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT));

    is this what you want?
    import fl.transitions.Tween;
    import fl.transitions.easing.*;
    var shortInst:Array = [btn1,btn2,btn3,exit];
    var objTween:Tween;
    function mouseOff(e:Event):void
    if (e.currentTarget.alpha !== 0)
      objTween = new Tween(e.currentTarget,"alpha",None.easeOut,1,0,0.25,true);
    function navFX(e:Event):void
    var eTimer:Timer = new Timer(3000,1); // <- moved that line here
    for (var i:Number = 0; i < shortInst.length; i++)
      objTween = new Tween(shortInst[i],"alpha",None.easeOut,0,1,0.25,true);
    eTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, local);
    eTimer.start();
    function local(t:TimerEvent):void
      trace("e.target in local func: " + e.target);
      for (var i:Number = 0; i < shortInst.length; i++)
       if (shortInst[i] !== e.target)
        shortInst[i].dispatchEvent(new Event(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT));
    for (var i:Number = 0; i < shortInst.length; i++)
    shortInst[i].alpha = 0;
    shortInst[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, navFX);
    shortInst[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, mouseOff);
