For Mac newbies, before you decide to update your software,  a moment

I think it is good practice to wait at least a couple of days and keep checking the apple ddiscussion forums, websites of the software apps you use most frequently (and their forums if any), good sources of mac news (like Macfixit) all of which to help you avoid issues with either a software update that has a bug in it, or an incompatibility issue with software you have installed on your system. For example, QT has had 3 updates in a short period of time: 7.1.0, 7.1.1, 7.1.2. With the Intel Delta 10.4.7, there has already been a newer version one day later (or two?). iWork 2006 updater had a v2 released a short time after an update was released for it.
It just makes sense to wait a bit. I know that the only way that "issues" are found is for people to do it. But, if you use your mac for business, are new to macs, or just don't have the time to recover your mac if an issue arises.....just give a week. The normal stuff still applies too: repair permissions before updating, run your 3rd party maintenance utility to clean things up, and unplug attached stuff. If your new to macs, find a good book series. I like the Missing Manual series...written in such a way to be great for newbies and experienced persons.

Good advice, and probably some I should have thought of before doing the update. I bought in too heavily to the "It just works" idea and marketing.
I also hadn't realised that Apple's software engineer team has recently been filched from Microsoft.. or at least that's what it seems like...

Notes on Transferring OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks…
Most MP3 capable devices should play OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks.
If you intend to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an Apple® device, note the following…
iTunes® v9.0.2 (or newer) is required.
The Apple device must be formatted for use with Microsoft® Windows®.
The iTunes setting 'Manually manage music…' must be enabled for the device before you can complete the transfer. Adjust this setting in iTunes as follows…
Connect the iPod® to your computer.
If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer).
In iTunes, locate the device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click the device.
    The 'Summary' screen is displayed.
Place a checkmark next to 'Manually manage music…'.
    Click the 'Apply' button.
The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and the changes are saved.
    If desired, close iTunes.
Note that if an Apple device is connected to your computer, you can choose to simultaneously transfer a title to the iTunes Library and the Apple device. If you wish to only transfer a title to the iTunes Library, you must first disconnect the Apple device

I think the issue is that iTunes (for whatever reason) thinks I have two Apple ID's.
also, to further complicate the issue, when i try updating the apps from my iPod the iTunes store is still recognizing my old hotmail Apple ID. So when I go to enter my password it won't accept because it doesn't match with the old Apple ID, even though it is the same account (just new Apple ID name).
I have tried signing out within the App Store and re-signing in with my Apple ID but it still brings up my old Apple ID name when I try to update.

  • ITunes no longer asks for my password before making purchases or updating apps

iTunes no longer asks for my password before making purchases or updating apps... my restrictions are set so that is should ask for a password immediately but it doesn't seem to ask for this since iOS7... anyone got any ideas????

Try changing Settings > General > Restrictions > Require Password to 'immediately'

Sometimes it is helpful to post in your native language too so that another native speaker can pick up the post and explain to your better understanding.
You have received a message regarding  "kernel protection" mode which is the computer's way of alerting you to a fault (usually) in the system files. The first thing to try is a shut down: Hold down the Power button for a few seconds until you hear the drive stop and see the display go black. Leave it for a little while, then press the Power button to start up your system as you normally would. This usually gives the system a chance to do a "File System Check" and make any necessary repairs. Nothing is required of you at this stage except to wait for the process to complete. If everything is now in order, then your computer will boot normally. It might take a few more minutes than usual; this is alright and not to worry. If everything is fine then relaunch the app where you experienced the problem and see what happens. If it is the same thing, then get the computer to a qualified
Apple repair service center for diagnosis. (Before you spend your money on the upgrade there might be a fix closer to hand at a much lower price. The computer could very well "heal itself" in the restart process.)

  • You Need To Update Your Browser

Not at every website, but at some, when the site first opens, I get a message/popup saying, "You need to update your browser.  Your browser is out of date and some features of this web site may not display correctly.  You can update your Chrome, Safari, Explorer, Firefox browser..."  Each one is a clickable link.  Usually, I can click on an "X" or just somewhere else in the web site to continue browsing.
I'm running Safari 5.1.10.  Isn't that the most up to date version for OS 10.6.8?  Are they saying I need to update my OS; isn't that the only way to update Safari?

Use Firefox if you want to stay with 10.6. It is still being updated.
    Firefox
Will that automactically also update iTunes?
Yes, iTunes will appear as an update.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.
Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software.??

I have recently been having issues signing into my Apple ID and decided to go in and update my email and change my password.
Since changing my email and password I have been unable to update any of my apps. I receive this error message when trying to update, "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."
I have looked into other forums and communities for a solution to this issue but from what I have read iTunes/Apple has yet to figure out a solution.
I have also read that the cause of this issue can be linked to two things.
One, is if you have multiple accounts on one computer. I only have one iTunes account/ Apple ID on this computer. This is my personal laptop and no one else has ever loaded on another account.
The second cause is linked to the country to which the apps were downloaded in. My computer and Apple ID were both created in the US, however 9 months ago I moved to New Zealand on a one year work holiday visa. Since living in New Zealand for the past 9 months I have been buying and updating apps, it wasn't until today when I received this error message.
I would really like to find a solution to this problem, but at the very least I would like to know what exactly caused this issue so that others may hopefully steer clear.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Cheers.

Is it possible to write in superscript or subscript in mac mail since the OSX Mavericks update? At the moment I have to copy and paste from Pages!

I tried to figure this out myself and couldn't believe there wasn't a simple menu item to get this done.  Seems there was in pre-Mavericks but not in Mavericks.   Found several answers but they all reply to before Mavercks.
This is helpful and yet I'm left with "Wow!  Apple really can make simple things difficult.  Who would have guessed."

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open App Store > Purchases, and see if iPhoto app is listed. If not, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 Apart from that, check that iPhoto is in Applications folder. If not, put it in this folder.
If nothing works, remove iPhoto, open App Store > Purchases, and install iPhoto free of charge
