I bought my iMac in Dec. 2012 - no manual was sent with it.  Years ago,(and I've been with Apple for 30 years) every Mac came with a thick manual. Yesterday, I had a problem with my keyboard.  I called Tech Support.  Alas, my coverage period was over.  I had to pay $19 to find out how to fix it - a simple trick that I did not know about as I had no manual.  The support tech was sympathetic and emailed  a "manual" to me (published 2009.)  This was a short dissertation on the glorius (and I agree) workings of the iMac and how to keep it healthy.  No where did I find the info that the tech had told me about. It is sad, when one spends thousands on a computer, that one has either a choice of paying more for extra tech coverage, or buying a book that is authored by an outsider. Tsk-tsk.

I have a late 2012 iMac, and other than how you access the RAM sockets in the 27" model or the ports available, the latter of which is covered in the Quick Start. I can't think of much that wouldn't be the same as in a 2011 model other than the specs. But obviously it will depend on the precise question or issue you need to address.
Apple is never going back to the days of printed manuals, nor will any other computer manufacturer. The costs of producing and shipping are just too high. If you want print, you'll have to look to the independent publishers, and they usually are a bit slow to put out new editions for new computer models.
You can always visit an Apple Store, if there's one near you, for assistance. If you want to have phone support available, you might want to consider purchasing AppleCare for your iMac. That will give you three years of phone support at no extra charge.

  • Setup for an iMac G5, a MacBook Pro, and an AirPort Extreme

    Any experience I've had with computers was in the early 80s, yes, it is very sad.
    I purchased a G5, the laptop, and the AirPort and have been able to set everything up and get everything going. Just amazing.
    I've only run into one issue.
    I have access to the Internet via a cable modem. My G5 sits on my desk. I would like to continue to use wire with it. I would like to be able to use my laptop in wireless mode.
    At present, if I want to switch between machines, I have to unplug the cable from the back of my computer, move it to the AirPort, power down the cable modem box, power it back up, power up the AirPort. Not knowing what I'm doing, it was the only way I could think of to accomplish my goal. It works, but it is a pain.
    What can I do so that I have the ability to have the G5 wired and the laptop wireless.

    Looks like you already have all the necessary components to do this. The following would be the suggested network configuration with the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn):
    Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] AEBSn [LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] iMac G5, AND AEBSn > (wireless) > [built-in AirPort Extreme] MacBook Pro
    In this configuration, you should be able to access the Internet both via wire for the iMac and wirelessly with the MacBook Pro.
    The following would be the basic set up steps, using the AirPort Utility (in Manual mode), for a cable modem connection...
    AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBSn) w/Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
    Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBSn. (optional)

    You may be able to find what you need in the [DIY|http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/imac> manual appropriate for your model. However, I think that the BT module is soldered to the motherboard and is not user replaceable. Get an external dongle, which will work just as well.

  • Organizer. not able to turn off "automatic search for missing files"

    Organizer starts searching for missing files. files that i have deleted, and the programme just keep on forever searching for those already deleted files. When i try to turn off that function, the organizer just stops. Running the program on Imac 2010.

    That's the thing with the Elements Organizer - once you start managing your media in it you must also use it for all subsequent maintenance so that it retains integrity.
    To try and resolve the Find> all Missing Files crash problem go to File> Manage Catalogs and Repair your current catalog. Follow that with an Optimize. See if you can now find them without the crash.
    If Find> All Missing Files is still causing a crash, you could try File> Reconnect> All Missing Files. As that searches your entire hard disk for one image at a time, and will take a very long time if you did a lot of deletions with your EasyDuplicateFinder program, wait for it to finish examining your catalog then cancel the attempt to find each image. Now in your organizer each of the missing files thumbnails will have a question mark at top left - you can then delete these from the catalog. After you've done quite a few retry Find> All Missing Files again to see if it will run without crashing.

  • Check for missing pages

    At work we are using a scanner with a feeder to digitalize many of our company documents. On the first manual check I found there to be a few missing pages. If there a way to automate the "missing page check". Can i write a script to check for missing pages. I am fairly new to acrobat and OCR, but I am knowledgeable in programming. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to apply a new font for missing glyphs in another font?

    The situation:
    For an article, I want to use Font1, but some of the glyphs are missing in it, and are highlighted with pink boxes. Font2 have much more glyphs than Font1. I can apply Font2 manually for each of the missing glyphs, but it is tedious.
    Question:
    Is there a way for InDesign to do such substitution automatically? I.e., apply a default font, which can be specified by user, for all the missing glyphs.
    If not, how to search/find those missing glyphs with GREP or script? Since InDesign can identify the missing glyphs and marked them with pink boxes, it seems easily (not to identify the unicode ranges which seems not very easy) to find them using GREP, but I failed to find it.
    Any one know how to do this? Thanks.

    No. Alas, I might add. There is some sort of auto-catch, specific for Symbol symbols, but no-one knows how it works and you cannot manipulate it yourself.

    Not specifically, i.e., you cannot search for "any missing glyph". Add a GREP style which changes just the font (make sure it doesn't set the font style as well, or else your Bolds or Italics might disappear). Create a new Preflight profile that checks just for missing glyphs, so you won't miss any.
    None of this can be automated though.
    .. it seems easily (not to identify the unicode ranges which seems not very easy) to find them using GREP, but I failed to find it.
    InDesign's GREP flavor doesn't allow named Unicode blocks (http://www.regular-expressions.info/unicode.html), but I have successfully used character ranges to automatically set the font for Chinese, for example.

    No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.

    Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of added security as well as speed-up:

  • PSE5 "searching for missing file"

    Whenever I click on a thumbnail picture it gives me the message "Searching for missing file". Some of the pictures I was able to view only hours ago and now they are apperently missing. I have not done anything differently with these pictures. When I click on browse to search for the missing file, it is unable to locate the picture. I am afraid I have just lost hundreds of pictures!

    PSE keeps only the hard disk references (location) of the files imported. So, whenever any operation like file renaming, moving to some other location, editing etc happen to a file outside PSE, the file go missing in PSE. On double clicking a file, PSE tries to connect its thumbnail to the original file on hard disk and when it does not find the file, it shows "Reconenct" dialog.
    To reconnect the file, you've 2 options - Auto Reconnect & Manual Reconenct
    For Auto reconenct just double click the file and allow the dialog to search for file on your hard disk. This can be at times time consuming process.
    You can also connect your files manually:
    1) Type "Ctrl + K" on app. A preference dialog will open
    2) Choose "Files" from left side and uncheck second preference to "Automatically search for and reconnect missing files".
    3) Click "Ok" to save the settings
    4) Double click a missing file to open manual reconnect dialog.
    OR
    4') To reconnect all missing files in one go --> Goto File menu --> Reconnect --> All missing files. An engine will search all the files that are missing from the catalog and a manual reconnect dialog will be shown..
    5) Now, you can connect each file seperately by manually searching the hard disk.

    did Yamaha/Apogee ever work out the problem that you couldn't use mLAN drivers for the XS (it's not really mLAN, it's "based on" right?) and Apogee drivers at the same time?
    I think Yamaha has updated their drivers twice since you and I last exchanged ideas on this.
    You've got killer hardware, and while I'm sure it's possible to set up an XS to send MTC and for Logic 8 to deal with correctly, it's just backwards of the way I use (almost) the same tools. My experience is the same, control Logic from the Motif, only it's so much more than just stop/start, and locate. Your XS is made to be a remote controller for Logic, sliders, transport controls, even the info for tracks and plug-ins (in Logic!) show up on your XS display and you can do plenty without touching the keyboard or mouse... Besides the sound of the Motifs, they're just great at doing this kind of stuff too... I personally wouldn't consider anything else...
    I don't want to send you down a path that won't work if the two vendors in question haven't solved this yet, but... I want to help you but deep inside I think you're approaching your top-of-the-line gear backwards...
    of course, if this is still a vendor incompatibility thing... then you have no choice.
    pages 839 (the graphic is on page 838) of the Logic user manual under "listen to MMC input" describes what you need to set in Logic 8 to make this work. Since I don't have an XS, I can't point you to the correct pages for that.

    The booklet that shipped with your dad's computer will be the one that comes up when you input the serial number on the site we've referenced you to. That is the only manual that ships with the computer. If you want more information about how OS X works then you should probably go to your local Barnes & Noble and look for a book on OS X. First determine which version he's on which is either going to be 10.5.x (Leopard) or 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) and then pick out the book that best suits your needs.

    The items that you can purchase from iTunes in the form of apps are for either an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod) or for Mac Computers.
    The chances are the app you have downloaded is either written for an iPhone or iPad (iOS device -although even then there can be differences) or for a Mac computer (even then it may be OS version specific)
    In a search for "Miss Kitty Slot" in iTunes I found this

    i need a wireless router for my imac g4. Which one do you recommend? All all wireless routers capatible with macs?

    As Donald mentions, the routers are all compatible with Macs, but the software CD that they include often has Windows specific software on them that is really just a front-end for configuring the router for use. It does nothing that you cannot do yourself manually by accessing the router through the IP address that gets you into the router settings.
    If it sounds difficult, it certainly is not. Once you are in - and that is simple - the router's info is in a nice graphical interface that is simple to use.
