For Mom who needs little: Old mini or new mini?

I am upgrading my Mom from a 1994 Performa to a Mini, but I am on the fence as to previous version for $400ish or new version for $500ish. I want this to be as low budget as you go for a new mac. If it was a $3,000 mac I would get newer, but for $100 off at this low level I could most of a new flat LCD for the difference.
Both new and old are plenty powerful/large for her email/www needs and occasional Word/Xcel and iPhoto/iTunes;-) I don't think she will be burnings lots of discs (I can do it on my mac for her every year need)
SO my question would be...do you think firewire 400/800, superdrive, and any differences in monitor ports make a $100 difference?? I sound cheap, but maybe the newer mini might have some "cons" that I did not think of?? She may have this mac for another 5-10 years so is there a tangible reason to get the newer?

I totally subscribe to the "buy as much as you can afford" thing but this is such a cheap computer that I am aiming to max its low-end-ness. I don't think she will use more than 1gb RAM or have more than 80gb hd needs. The stats on the old mini seem just fine, but maybe there are intangibles that would lean the choice? Here is my choice:

Settings for your iMovie for what? If your are talking about conversion to an iPod compatible format, which format? Are you more concerned with quality or quantity?
First, what's the best, fastest and easiest way to convert these iMovies to the H.264 (is that done through iMovie or QT Pro or both) and what other settings (audio for one) should I be using besides the standard 30 fps ?
Your are using the same QT tools whether you convert directly from iMovie or indirectly via QT Pro using a reference file. (I.e., the only time you save is the time it takes to write the reference file itself.)
Define what you mean by best.
The "Movie to iPod (320x240)" option is the fastest in terms of programming your conversion but the slowest in terms of time it take for processing. The "Movie to MPEG4" option is slower/harder to program for a single pass H.264 encode, but takes half the time to process as the dedicated H.264 option. MPEG4 video options (single pass and 2-pass modes) are faster than H.264 codec. Audio options are the same for both H.264 and MPEG4 formats -- AAC LC. I personally would stick with the 44.1 kbps sampling rate and 128 kbps data rate for audio but you could take it up to 48 kbps at 160 kbps if you want. As to frame rate, I would stick with the current (original) setting of your source. 30 (29.97) fps provides the smoothest flow of motion. You could, of course, try 24 or even 15 fps in some cases to see if it is acceptable. Dropping below 12 fps would probably be unacceptable to most people. But you're the producer and director here, so you have to make up your own mind.

To turn Messages off, you'll need to turn it off in the Messages setting, and then set up Restrictions and disallow changes to accounts. Otherwise your child can just turn it right back on. For more information, see:

This presumes that your iPhone is running iOS 6. The option to disable Messages is not present in iOS 5, if my memory is correct.

Move data from old iMac to new Mini? HELP

I have a dear old iMac 233mhz (rev. a)., running OS 8.6. I need to move some Appleworks files and Netscape Communicator 4.7 emails and address cards to my new Mini Core Solo.
OS 8.6 doesn't talk (easily) via either airport (the iMac is cabled to a snow base station) or direct by ethernet. There may be work arounds, but I find them too complex for my feeble brain and patience.
I have a CD burner, but the old iMac apparently can't burn discs without 3rd party software. Toast 4.x is suggested; my old copy of Toast 5 complains that it needs at least OS 9.x to install.
ebay and yahoo auctions come up dry when looking for Toast 4. Can anyone help, or suggest another method? Emailing the appleworks files does work, but is too slow. (I bought the current AW for the Mini). Thanks.

I'm happy to report total success with my file transfer. My Dad's old iMac ran 8.6 and had no Firewire BTW.
I tried plugging my iPod into the old iMac's USB port but the mac reported it did not have the proper software installed to interact with that device.
I then followed the excellent instructions given in this link (provided by Grant Bennet-Alder elsewehere in this thread):

The Time Machine in my old Mini and new Mini is different

In my earlier Mac Mini, I could use the internal drive for the backup, which was great. However, when I setup the Time Machine for the new Mini, it insists on me setting up an external drive. So I can't use the internal drive for backups any more?

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

You can transfer iTunes purchases from the old iPod to your computer then sync the new iPod.
Connect the old iPod, launch iTunes. From the menu bar click File > Transfer Purchases From
Now connect the new iPod and sync Apps, Music, etc.
As for selling the old one tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
That will erase all personal data from the iPod.

New user to Oracle 11i who needs help on creation of new fixed asset class

I am new to my Company who is using Oracle 11i. And the Company has a new class of fixed asset and a GL code has been created. But there is no link between the Fixed Asset Manager and the GL code, i.e. depreciation is not linked, additions are not captured into "Cost register", no asset number was assigned in Oracle. Please help.

Hi.
No, Simon, it does not work that way.
First, be sure that the distribution line has the flag "Track as Asset" checked.
Second, the GL Account to be used on the distribution line must be the one defined, in the FA Asset Category, as the Asset Clearing Account.
In FA, navigate to /Setup/Asset System/Asset Categories. Following, query a Category. There you can see which account has been used as the Asset Clearing Account.
You can use as many Asset Clearing accounts as you which, but normally, all Categories share the same account.
Now reverse the distribution line and cretae a new one with the correct account. Post it, run the Mass Additions Process and you will see the that the addition was created.
