A Reset (in link from previous post) is not a Restore. It does not erase the iPod. A Reset is THE method to "re-boot the whole system."
The reason for the Hold switch has nothing to do with turning an iPod ON or OFF. It exists because most iPods have touch-based controls. The Hold switch is there to lock the controls, in situations when the iPod is playing music and you don't want to inadvertently touch the controls while handling the iPod.
Pressing and holding the Play/Pause button turns an iPod OFF. But I hardly ever manually turn OFF my iPod (except for my iPod shuffle). I just stop playing music and leave it alone. The display backlight goes off by itself within a few seconds, and if the controls are not touched, the iPod soon goes into the same power saving mode as turning it OFF manually.

You can't merge Apple IDs. What you could do is set up your phone to use the same iCloud accout you are using on your Mac. To do this, go to Settings>iCloud and turn all synced data (Contacts, Calendars, etc.) to Off. When prompted, choose to keep the data on the phone. When everything is off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. Now add the iCloud account you set up on your Mac (with the same Apple ID) and turn syncing back on for Calendars, Contacts, etc. When prompted, you will probably want to choose merge, to merge the data on your phone with the existing data on this iCloud account.

One of the following steps should help.
1. Install Adobe Flash Player.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
2. Enable Plug-ins
    Safari > Preferences > Security
    Web Content:
    Click in the box for "Enable Plug-ins".
3. Check whether you are currently in YouTube HTML 5 trial.
     http://www.youtube.com/html5
    At the bottom left of the page uncheck the box for
   "You are currently in the HTML5 trial".
4. Reset Safari.
    Click Safari in the menu bar.
    From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
    Uncheck the boxes next to all items.
    Check the box next to "Remove all website data".
    Click "Reset".
5. Turn off Extensions/Plug-ins if any that may interfere with Flash working properly.
    Safari > Preferences > Extensions

If you want to use multiple devices - move to imap, I would even say "exchange", but Google does not support free exchange anymore, since January of that year. So Ironically Icloud or Hotmail would be my choices right now.

Yes it sounds like you have a corrupted preference file.
The setting you make in individual programs get saved to a Preference file in your Users/Library/Preferences folder.
All you have to do is drag out the old file to the desktop, reboot and load the program and the preference file gets rebuilt without your preferences which you reset.
For your case I beleive the preference file is
com.apple.desktop.plist

Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each device and make sure only the phone number for that device is checked.

I compose an iMessage with the destination as my email address and I attach 2 photos I want on my PC. I send them several times from my iPhone 5C but they never arrive. I look at my ipad later and realize that it's iMessage app is getting ( and swallowing) these emails. I then turn the ipad off. Still can't get the photos through because iphone is now getting them on it's iMessage. I turn off the iMessage feature and try to send photos from text msging. Phone tells me it can't send photos unless iMessage it turned on. What happened to regular MMS text messaging? I go and try to send photos as an email attachment and see that there is no option to attach from the stupid email program. I look up online to learn about the brave new world of apple attachments and send them.

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.

Do you remeber the exact (or close to it) wording of the error message?
Try manually placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then try to restore
Next try DFU mode.

You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. My back camera does work and everytime I select my front camera, it doesn't open. I haven't dropped my ipod and I have reset my settings and turned the power off my Ipod. Is there an obvious way to fix this problem or should I get my iPod repaired?

You can try a Reset first: hold down the home and sleep button, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't work try a Restore from Backup in iTunes. Still no go? Try a Restore as new.
If that still doesn't work make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
