Rman is so feature rich and yiou can integrate your third party backup software with rman to take backups, there is nothing to worry in your case, this is very much in the reach.

  • What commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR*Tools

Can somebody please help me urgently to know what are the commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR TOOLS.Also specifythe commands in detail which can be used for taking backups of oracle database ,Online Redo log files in databse using BRBACK tool,Archiving of offline, redo log files using BRARCHIVE, and Restoring a Database using BRRESTORE tool Commands(Plese specify the commands with their Syntax used). Also specify the commands with their Syntax which are used for taking backup of oracle database(online,Offline redo log files) into Tapedrives using BRTOOLS commands.
Thanking You for helping (in advance).

    Dear Ashish,
BRBACKUP / BRARCHIVE calls the operating system command to copy the files.
Simple approach to get the commands is as follows.
    1. Set the BR_TRACE (as given in the SAP note 29321) and run the command for which you need to know the OS / SQL commands.
    2. This will generate the log file with the trace information. This trace has the information of the commands used by the job you have run.
    Hope this helps.

Hello I bought a G-Raid GR4 4000 4 TB and used it for a backup with my new Imac27. Now this is all I get. "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “G-RAID”. to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
Any idea what I should do?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • User privilege level for configuration backup with PI 1.2

We have more than 50 devices handling by PI 1.2 (testing) I like to know how to do configuration archiving with user who doesn't have write privilege.
    I tried like this.
username john privilege 6 password cisco
privilege exec level 6 show running-config
    (result) show run --> blank
I tried this user with one of switch in PI 1.2. It did not do configuration backup
    username inout password inout
username inout privilege 15 autocommand show running-config
(result) once logged in, it automatically showed running-config. However when I tried with PI 1.2 with this user (inout). I couldn't do configuration back.

so, my question is this. what is the solution for me to create certain user with read-only privilege while PI 1.2 is able to do configuration archiving ?
    thanks in advance

7.4 MSE code will in fact require an update of Prime 1.2 to 1.3.0.20-
It's pretty easy though and your licenses will still work from the Prime Infra side.
Here's a link to upgrade PI to 1.3

I personally would go ahead with the upgrade of both:::

  • Privileges required for database backup with RMAN

    Hello,
We have 10g R2 on Solaris box. We use RMAN for backup and use the SYS account on the database to connect and take the backup.
Are there specific privileges that are required to take the database backup , so that I do not use the SYS account or the syspassword in the RMAN script.
I want to create an account and give only the privileges required to take the database backup and recover .
    Thanks

I think RMAN needs the SYSDBA privilege, so you won't gain much by switching from SYS to another user.
You don't need to store sys/password in a script. You can just :-
    rman target / catalog xxx/yyy@catalog

  • Runlevel for taking backups

I'm sure I've seen somewhere a recommendation to use runlevel one to take backups to ensure filesystem consistency, however that kills automation unless I handle it through inittab, which seems a bit backwards. So, how essential is having an unchanging filesystem when running rsync to backup everything and how else could I ensure a stable filesystem without runlevel switching? I thought about remounting partitions read-only, but that doesn't work if something is using them.
Last edited by Barrucadu (2010-05-31 22:12:25)

Doing file-system level backups are generally fine* without changing run-levels.
As bruce mentioned, if you want to do block-level backups using dd or dump then it becomes important.
At the end of the day, doing the backup is only half the job. You have to do test restores as well, so that will highlight if you have any issues with your backup stage.
    * Exceptions to this are things like database files. The files will backup OK, but if the database is running, then you've backed them up in an "open" state which the DBMS may not like recovering from in a restore situation. Text files, music, movies, documents etc should be fine.

  • DBID for RMAN backup with format '%u'

    Hi all:
(I've post this at c.d.o.s. too, but no answers...)
This is Oracle 10.2.0.3 on Enterprise Linux 5.
I've been given two backups from an Oracle Database: one 'cold' and
one 'hot'. They both come from a lost server.
The fact is that they have been made with the format '%u' (eight
alphanumerics) and I must recover the database on a new server. I
cannot get the DBID from the backup files name because of this format
    '%u'.
The backups have been made with CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON (or so I'm told).
How can I get the DBID to recover the DB on a new server?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers.
    Carlos.

Plz help me to solve this error.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ankit Gupta

There is no problem if you delete oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1 prior to backup. It will come again since you are using Verify option with BRBACKUP.
What happens when you use verify option is Once the backup phase is complete, all the saved files are restored from the volume (for example, tape) in sequence to the temperory directory (in this case /oracle/BWD/sapreorg), decompressed (when compress = yes was used), read by the check program, and compared with the originals. And the check program being used is dbverify (command dbv).
The problem may not be with oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1, it may be with the original datafile bwd.data1. What you can do is,
Run dbv on all your datafiles and check for errors. (recommend to run dbv when database is offline)
If dbv returns an error, then fix that.
If there are no errors reported by dbv, then your database is perfect.
The reason why BRBACKUP gave the error in such a case, as i see it is, since you are doing an online backup, the datafile is first backed up to a backup media. Since verify is ON, the file is restored to the temperory folder. Some changes (even if minor) may occur in the datafile within this time frame and the comparison fails.
Another chance is if there is no enough space in sapreorg and the restored datafile is not complete.
If you get an error like "DBV-00102: File I/O error on FILE (/oracle/BWD/sapdata1/bwd.data1) during end read operation (-1)" on the original datafile, then, resizing of the datafile may help. Not sure though.
