For the attention of Mod DavidM - Slow broadband s...

Hello. My broadband speed is at 576kbs down and 288kbs up. According to kitz, I'm 2.28km direct from the exchange and my estimated line speeds are 2048kbps on Fixed ASDL and 4500kbps on DSL Max. Those are currently the only 2 options available in my area until FTTC is rolled out next year. In terms of noise attenuation heres the following...
23:00:12, 13 Aug.
( 64.430000) ETHoA is up - VPI: 0, VCI:35
23:00:12, 13 Aug.
( 64.430000) DSL is up
23:00:11, 13 Aug.
( 62.980000) DSL noise margin: 25.00 dB upstream, 28.90 dB downstream
23:00:10, 13 Aug.
( 62.890000) DSL line rate: 288 Kbps upstream, 576 Kbps downstream
22:59:46, 13 Aug.
( 38.130000) WAN Auto-sensing running.
Running on a BT Home Hub 4. It's been a lot slower running speeds as of recently though it may of been a while though I've been out of the country so unsure. If there's my PC connected and any other device, it pretty much slows to a near stop. Any help that you can give would be massively appreciated. I've contacted BT customer service before to just have line tests run etc... which has been absolutely no help. Hub is connected to the master socket aswell.

    David,
I am one of the many who has experienced the random rebooting, many times over the last 18 months or so since the upgrade to the new look software.  This issue has been highlighted by various people over the period, and your stock reply is for everyone to send you a private message and you will help.
The only help we want is a guaranteed supply of service, free from rebooting, provided by a combination of a stable BT Vision box and properly programmed software.  Can you help with this...?  If so, please explain what your plan is...?
When this problem first arose I was in regular contact with a Senior Manager for BT Vision Products, and she couldn't help me.  When my questions got hard last November, she chose to just ignore me.
Last week I received an email from another BT employee from the Resolutions Dept stating that "This issue will not be fixed".  Again, I went back to him with a hard question, and again, he has chosen to ignore me.
On one of my previous forum posts last week your BT TV expert SteveM questioned his colleagues comment above.  Again, I went back to Steve with a hard question, and again, he has chosen not to reply as yet.
My friend's Sky box has never rebooted randomly.  You would think that if BT can afford to pay £900m for the rights to broadcast Champions League football, then they can afford to fix this problem.  You would also think that a company the size of BT would have the clout to employee whomever they need to make this work.  If your box supplier can't provide working boxes, go to another supplier.  If your software programmers can't write a working programme...well you know the answer.
Sorry to ramble on, but BT have rambled on even longer in their efforts to find a resolution to this major problem.
I do hope that you will show everyone on this forum the professional coutesy of a positive response and action plan, and I for one look forward to your comments in due course.
    Thank you,
    Douglas

Yep, mine reboots all the time as well and has lately also started showing a white screen and refusing to budge from it whenever we watch BBC iPlayer and the programme finishes.
Since the OP mentions BT Sport I'll also say that imo BT Vision has gone from fairly appalling but cheap. to nearly unwatchable it has so much dross on it. This is because no doubt ALL the money has gone into BT Sport which according to myself and a great many others, is also complete dross.
BT's complaints have gone through the roof since BT Sport arrived and little wonder - I get it for free and can't be bothered with it.
The only positive thing I can say regarding BT is; thank goodness my contract is up this month...

    Hello there,
Just saw your advice given for post titled "nano frozen". I followed out your advice holding down middle and menu key and my nano screen works now! Thanks.
PS any idea why the screen freezes like it does and they we have to go through process of holding down keys to get it working again?? The reason I ask is that I have only had my Ipod Nano for just under 5 months and if a major problem I might ask for new replacement.
Many thanks again for the advice!!!

"PS any idea why the screen freezes like it does and they we have to go through process of holding down keys to get it working again?? The reason I ask is that I have only had my Ipod Nano for just under 5 months and if a major problem I might ask for new replacement."
    Can I answer instead?
Doing what you did is called a "reset" and is a very common fix for iPod ills. It's posted all over these forums just about every other post (mainly because folks don't read the manual or the getting started guide before coming here!).
It's just like restarting your computer when it freezes or won't respond and it's not a major problem unless you frequently have to do this.
    Nothing to worry about.

  • How do you set up a custom color for the standard screen mode

This new colour scheme has not enough contrast for it to be readable, so I was pleased to find custom screen mode. However, there seems to be no way of setting up a custom color for this. In addition, the icons are so small they are unreadable. Is there any way of making them bigger. I have a 20" and a 22" monitor working together, but they are still not clear enough to use.

    Hi there
Are you referring to the tool icons in Photoshop CS6? There are a few options you can change to help make the interface more readable, but unfortunately, there is not an option to enlarge the tool icons.
It sounds like you may have discovered this already, but if you go to Photoshop > Preferences > Interface, you can change the color of the Photoshop CS6 interface.
You can also enlarge the UI text size in this same window, in the Text preferences box.
You can also make the size of your layers thumbnails larger. You can do this by clicking on the small menu in the upper right hand corner of the Layers Panel and selecting Panel Options.
Here you can change the size of the layers thumbnails.
I hope this helps you out a bit!

Hi there help is required immediately.
    Where do i start.
Basically we have had problems with our broadband since we got it in a bit back and recently it got even worse. We reported this all to BT the same engineer has had too visit twice even though he clearly said there is not a problem with our line and that it is a fault at the exchange because of the section our house is hooked up too.
His last visit was about 3 weeks ago , he said everything fine but obviously speeds gross as he agreed, we are literally living with between 0.3 0.7 speeds now constantly and 1mb if we lucky and this is all the time. He forwarded all this too some specialist team that deal with the exchange faults etc and said they woudl ring us within 2 days! this was over 3 weks ago it must be now and nothing still!! internet si actually worse and i log in to my bt account tonight and amazingly the fault has been taken ooff ~! I have emaield bt numerous times over past week with no response and this is how they treat me. I would appreciate help with this matter asap or i really have no option but to take it to court because this is just shambolic. thanks

No my question is not with bt open reach they done there job ! The note's he put's frward go on my bt account for future reference if bt need too look at history of problems.  BT retail Provide my broadband so they sort it ! end of story ! OFCOM always states that when i pay a product i get what im paying for. we can chat lega if u wan too ?
Finally the terrible speed test worked. ps: to the person who said this speed test provides things that are required, wrong , it provides nothing different to speed test.com which actually provided more info.
    but here it is anyways
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2842 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
This speed is actually miracle shame it's a one off im guessing every other bt customer here has went to bed.
anyways i'll see if any bt representative here want to fix the FAULT that has been deleted off my account which i have all the info for still i save everything so if it is not sorted asap, bills will be stopped and trading standards will be contacted as well as my dad's solicitor. Because enough is enough.

Some tips to get what you need from forums, which can be confusing places at first. And if you don't follow the usual way of doing things, it can actually cause annoyance and work against you.
If you have more to add it is very important to return to the original message and hit Reply. Posting a new message is very confusing, and is likely to lead to your message being ignored (or worse).

  • IOS4 for the 1st generation touch

I have a first generation ipod touch. Will I be able to upgrade to IOS4? If not, does that mean my touch will not be able to use the app store anymore and upgrade my existing apps?

iOS 4 doesn't support the first generation iPod touch. The new features are too much for the first Touch to handle. (slow processor) But that doesn't mean you can't buy or update apps, it just means you don't have the latest features. But believe me, you wouldn't want to update anyway. There has been a buttload of problems to buttloads of people updating their ipod touches. 1. Battery life gone down 80 percent. 2. Errors to downloading the update and ipod in recovery mode. 3. Software update not downloading. 4. All the features aren't even available to my 2nd generation ipod touch. 5. Update erasing all apps. 6. Update erasing EVERYTHING. 7. Update slowing down entire ipod. 8. Update erasing data on apps. (like the apps were just downloaded) 9. Update screwing ipod leaving it on a screen where you can't do anything, not even restore.

  • Two Loop for the position

Hi people i explain my situation.
I have a table with some component.
Every component have a type. For example:
    Pos  Name  Netprice Type Uepos
    10    xxxx    xxxx      TAP
    20    yyyy    yyyy      TAN     10
    30    zzzz    zzzz      TAN     10
    Now i must do it.
Loop at this table, if TYPE = TAN i read the UEPOS value and get it into a Zvariable.
Now i must reloop in the table because i must SUM the Netprice of every element Type TAN that have the same UEPOS, and this UEPOS must be the same of the POSNR of the element that have the Type TAP.
Understand? I Know it's difficolt to explain. I try more in another type.
    I have this situation:
    POS NAME NETPR
    10     A        0
    20     A.1     xx
    30     A.2     yy
    40     B        0
    50     B.1     xx
In this actual situation the A.1 are dependento of A and i wanto to sum in the NETPR of A the netpr xx , yy of the A.1 and A.2. then the same for B position.
    Thanks for the attention.

hey i think you can do like this.
    SORT ITAB by TYPE UEPOS.
    clear: w_type, w_uepos, w_netpr.
    loop at itab.
    if w_type ne itab-type
    or w_uepos ne itab-uepos.
here you can capture previous type and uepos.. so write logic to use netprice before clearing that.
    clear w_netpr.
    w_type = itab-type.
    w_uepos = itab-uepos.
    endif.
    w_netpr = w_netpr + itab-netprice.
    endloop.
    Pos Name Netprice Type Uepos
    10 xxxx xxxx TAP
    20 yyyy yyyy TAN 10
    30 zzzz zzzz TAN 10

    Hi,
I have had bt broadband opt3 for almost 3 months now and have always had a healthy 9mb+ connection, however have noticed it being very slow in the evening when I come home from work, I checked the speed last nite as iplayer was constantly freezing and was getting 1mb . A bit upset by this as I got bt broadband to play my ps3 online and to get faster speeds on my laptop, and I use these services mostly at nite.
I checked my speed this morning and was getting 11mb, is this normal or am I being capped I cant believe Id be going over my download limit. Can someone from bt get back to me on this?
    Thanks
    John

Yes Alison, I think I can see that now. I wouldnt mind if broadband was a bit slower at peak times, I know thats normal, but when I'm only getting 1mb when my max is 14mb, I just dont feel I'm getting what I pay for. And when it gets to the point where I cant watch iplayer without it stuttering everywhere and online games lagging on the ps3, this is certainly not what I'm paying for.
I was hoping one of the mods here would help me and check my line and see if there is any cap on the line and get it removed.
I really dont wanna phone India, I deal with them 5 days a week as is...
Think I will just send one of the mods an email to check my line and see if it is being capped or if somethings wrong.

You will never get decent speeds on Iplayer,
BT limit it because they want you to subscribe to their precious BT Vision service.
The only way you are guaranteed to get decent speeds on BT is to subscibe to BT Vision and also unlimited broadband.
Then you will get priority when you stream TV at your exchange unlike fighting it out with all the other broadband users as you currently are for the available bandwith.the more over subscribed your local exchange the worse it is

    Hi John,
I can take a look at the network side of things for you, to see if there is anything I can do to help improve your speed during peak periods. Please could you drop me an email with your BT account details? Please also include a link to this thread. It would also be very helpful if you could run a few speed tests using www.speedtester.bt.com when you feel your Broadband is running slow. I can then check those results from here.
    Thanks

Well John i'll tell you what it is...
First of all welcome to BT and I hope you'll enjoy 18months of pain and suffer.
    OK here it goes....
If you look at your contract, find a rule that says Fair Usage Policy.
Basically it states that BT will cap anyone that is abusing their lines.
However, it does not say what are the limits after which you are going to be capped for how long and at what times. (I'll come back to this later and explain)
If you ring 08007076044 I'm sure that someone will confirm my theory. As constant 1MBit between 6PM till 11/12 PM is actually FUP applied on to your account.
Ok time to explain my frustration about FUP.
Since I signed my contract with "lovely" BT for constant 4 months I had similar issue but it took me even longer to find out what is going on and how to deal with this problem (thanks to google).
FUP team states that if you exceed 100GB in a month (everyone will admit that these days 100GB is nothing when a single game for PS3/XBox360/PC sometimes is more than 5GB and 1080p film is about 12GB) will cap you for a month at peak times to outstanding and superfast 1Mbit (about 130-150KB/s).
I'be been watching my download and for few months never exceeded that 100GB in a month. Been ringing FUP team to verify when suddenly they told me that from (cant remember exactly) March FUP will apply only to accounts that are using Torrents and other P2P.
you won't believe how happy I was hearing that.... So i've started to download and next month guess what.... 1Mbit connection.
Really mad rang FUP team and asked them what on earth is going on. They confirmed that its only P2P and I've explained them that I only use Youtube, BBC iPlayer, Rapidshare, Steam and XBox Live, Beatport (just don't understand how ppl can use torrents and other P2P as they are just way to slow). So they were happy to take the cap off my broadband connection.
Next month same issue solved exactly the same way.
After that for consecutive few months I had no problem whatsoever until September where FUP Team said that there is no such thing and FUP applies to everyone.
So just want to say that BT is rubbish that can't keep their word.
I went to one of the sales advisor in the shopping centre and asked him how FUP works as it does not say in the contract "how, when, who and what".
So he said that policy is applied based on amount of files downloaded within that 100GB. So if I download e.g. 3x 50GB (although its 150GB altogether) files I wont be affected but 100x 1GB will put a cap on me.
I've been so curious if what he said was right and started to download 2x 60GB and guess what... Got frigging FUP placed on my account!!!.
    I've got 2months left with them and will be extremely happy to cancel my contract, moreover, I will do everything in my power to sue them under EU Consumer Rights Law (that states that contract should be clear and fair to both sides) as Fair Usage Policy is one of those things that allows BT to do anything they want to their customers;
    1. No clear explanation of what FUP is.
    2. Does not states the amount of downloaded data required to have cap on the acount
    3. Does not states for how long it will be applied
    4. Does not states when it will be applied
If you look at e.g. Virgin Broadband everything is clearly written in nice and understandable way. It warns you at what times FUP will be applied under what circumstances and for how long. Isn't it what we all want to know??

@Mateusz I think I maybe a victim of this outragous stint BT have done. I have 2 XBOX 360's running on XBOX Live, 2 Desktop PCs connected to the web constantly, and 3 laptops, we have a torrent sharing running and World Of Warcraft on one of the PCs. All of this is shared across a 6 person family. How can a family where two members goto to college and university do their college ork, download application such as VB.net do their coursework and revise without the hassle of a **** connection. Seriously BT get your ******* head outta your **** and stop this ********, we are customers, we pay for what we are offered. When I signed up several years ago I could download everything on the net woithout infracions on my line being set in motion. You altered my contract without telling me. You will lose custom from this. Also you have ****** my wireless

You lot are lucky, We wish we could be capped to 1mbit. Our IP profile is capped to 500kbit because BT say the line isn't good enough for anything more. We are paying for option3 up to 8mbit and BT have said we must continue to pay for it for the remainder of the contract, or buy ourselves out of it early, the reason they give.... Up to 8mbit means up to 8mbit. If you dont get 8mbit then TOUGH LUCK SUCKERS!!
The outcome? We feel like we've been turned over by a dodgey second hand car salesman called BT. The internet deal he flogged us was a dog, a ringer, it wasn't cosher and certainly had a false MOT certificate.

    Hi Amanda,
Why have you joined BT Option 3 when you can not get what BT can offer?
No pun intended but you are a bit of a sucker for paying high prices where other suppliers are cheaper and can provide what your line can support.

we moved house last october to this one, the connection was rubbish from the get-go, BT said the router was broken and we needed a new one, we said OK. That "OK" meant that we had entered into a new contract for option 3 same as out old one. The router wasn't broken, the new one didnt fix or improve the problem, we have since asked for a price reduction or compensation and been told "no". we are in contract and can pay to buy ourselves out of it if we like but otherwise we have to pay for option 3 and recieve fixed rate 500kb.

    Hi Amanda,
I think you'll find that the Hold To Term rules have changed. BT are now unable to charge you for the account if you no longer require it. It is against OFCOM's rulings for a company to make more money out of you as a leaving customer than an existing one. However, You will need to pay for the connection charge (if that has not expired it's original differed contract) which is £40. A cancellation fee of £25 if you are simply cancelling and not migrating using a MAC key and for any hardware. The Routers are advertised at £88 and i would suggest that if they believed on to be faulty then that would be replaced under guarantee and not be put on a differed basis. I would check exactly what they say the are charging you and query this through OFCOM. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/

Months of impecable service form BT as an option 3 customer. (I've even recommended BT to people)
    but
For the past 2 weeks peak traffic has murdered my connection.
I can get 14mbit off peak, and it used to drop to about 7-9 at peak times.
Now its down to 1-2mbit at peak times. (no i haven't breached FUP as I check my btinternet inbox for the 80GB warning)
I think its resonable to experience drop off but 90%!!!
BT advertising says fast speeds at peak times. less than 2mbit is not fast. (that the governments minimum standard!!!)
I don't know how to procede because when I'm experiencing these issues if I ring up I will end up waiting so long to speak to someone (because its peak time) the concection wiill be better again.
I can think of no recourse other than to approach trading standards...
Guarnetee me 5mbit at peak times (enough to stream HD iplayer) and I'd be happy
That is what BT vision customers are in essence are getting + what ever their PC is using.
Fair usage? what about Fair Supply.

  • Very Slow Broadband Speed for 2 months, and very U...

    Hi
I know exactly how you feel (Giza). I took out BT Total Broadband and had it installed on 02/12/2010. Day one I have 6.75 mbps, which was great as my previous provider only gave me 5 mbps max. So I was well please.
Then day two it dropped to 4.35 mbps, not much to worry about, just though as it was Friday the network would be busy. Then on day 3, I was getting 0.65 mbps, and I have battling with BT ever since.
I have had the usual c**p from BT in India about moving the router due to interference etc, but of course non of them worked. Finally they advised I needed an engineer to come out, so I booked it for next working day between8am and 1pm, he arrived at 12.45, so a good job I took the day off work.
All he did was re-wire by master socket, called a help desk and told them to reset my IP profile, and was going in 30 minutes. He just told me to keep and eye on my speed as it should get faster within 5 hours. 48 hours later still at 0.65 mbps. So once again called BT to be told they are still working on the problem and will contact me when it is fixed. Two week later, still no increase in speed.
So I called them and they apologise for not getting back to but they were very busy. Their solution was that I needed another engineer to visit. So again I book the next available slot, but this time for afternoon slot 13.00 to 18.00 hours, so I only need half a day off work (obviously BT don't realise people work).
He arrived at 13.45, and he seem very knowledgeable to the other guy, and he even advised he had worked for BT for over 28 years. He check the line coming into the house first then the same test at my socket, and advised there was not problems there and my line was above average quality and I was on a ADSL2 21C exchange (whatever that means), so he decided to go to the cabinet at the end of the my street, he was gone about 45 mins. He came back to advise it appeared I was cross-communicating with another circuit. He did another line test, but had to call the help desk to reset my line again as it was not giving his little box of tricks access to my full capacity.
Buy the time he was done it was 17.45, and had got me up to 10.9 mbps hand-shake with the exchange (I was so please I could have kissed him), and rang through to another help desk to reset my IP profile again to increase my speed, but as it finished at 18.00 he waited to see if it was done, but did say it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours for the request to be processed.
So left the computer on, and did some chores. Now when he left my router had been connected for over an hour and a half and he advised there should be no reason for it reset. At 18.15 the router crashed, when it came back the hand-shake had gone down to 9.6 mbps, but my speed was still at 0.65 mbps.  Then at 6.30 the router crashed again, then again, and again. Finally came back on at about 19.00. The hand-shake had come back at only 4.55 mbps.
Then at 19.30 I got a call from BT to say they were calling to see if I was happy with the service and had the engineer fixed the problem. Funnily enough just as they called the router crashed again. So I advised them of the above, and was told to do a hard reset on the router (use a paper click to press the reset button). Waited till I was re-connected. I was then told to test my speed at speedtest.net. Which I did, and I was getting, wait for it 2.35 mbps. The woman on the end of the phone advised, there you go it is fixed.
To which I clearly advised was not the case, and I should be getting 8.5 mbps as per the engineers advised. She all she could say was she needed to speak to the technical team and call me back. Which I was surprised she did at 20.20. Next action is to have another engineer come out and check the fault.
So now I am on my 3rd engineers visit, booked for this Friday afternoon. I did call the help desk, and asked for my service to be cancelled as I was that mad and upset about the service, but was told that as it was not BT's fault over my speed (god know's who's fault it is) I would need to pay for the remaining 15 months of my 18 month contract, but if I got the engineer to note on my account on Friday that it was their fault, I could cancel free of charge.
So been at work all day today, and though I would check my speed. Hand-shake now at 1.15 mbps, and my speed is at 0.65 mbps once again.
While writing this, I did not notice my Hub has once again crashed, and is just sat on yellow for Broadband. Of course if you are reading this I got it re-connected.

    Good fun isn't it

  • Windows 7 very slow logon, Waiting for the User Profile Service, winlogon event 6006

    Hello,
Every so often one of our Windows 7 clients which is not normally having any delay at logon will take a very long time to login. This may be 10 or 20 minutes or up to an hour in some cases.
Typically the event log will contain entries like
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> took 572 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logon).
There is no further information available from Event Log Online Help, nor any additional detail as to why the logon event was so slow. During the delay the user will just see "Waiting for the User Profile Service" on their screen.
We first started seeing this problem with Windows Vista and if anything the situation has not improved since then. It has never happened with any of our Windows XP users.
We are currently planning a migration of computers to Windows 7 but stuff like this which has not been resolved in Windows over a 2 year period will stall that migration. The least improvement is to increase the event notification to give a lot more
information on why the user profile processing has stalled.

    Hi,
When did the issue begin to occur? Did it occur after installing certain application or applying certain policy?
To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following step.
    1. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking to check whether the system can login quicker.
    2. Type “gpedit.msc” in Search box and press Enter. Navigate to the following location:
    Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Logon
Please double click “Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon” policy and disable it.
    3. Perform a
Clean Boot to check the result.
    Thanks,
    Novak

  • Anything I try to do on my iMac is suddenly slow and I typically get the pinwheel or it takes a few minutes for the app to start. This includes just typing into an email or pages doc etc.

I was using WildBlue Satellite service for my internet connection. I recently changed to a Broadband connection. Since the change my computer is slow. I click on the mail application icon (or any other icon) and then wait and wait for it to open. It used to be instantanious. While I am editing in Pages or Numbers I will type almost an entire sentence before the characters actually appear on the screen.  This happens when I am typing an email as well. I often get the pinwheel and cannot do anything until the system catches up with me. It doesn't make sense that the broadband connection has anything to do with this. My internet upload and download speeds are great.  It is mostly the internal apps that do not require an internet connection. Any ideas?

I've got activity monitor open and nothing is popping out at me. But I will check it the next time I get the pinwheel.
No software was installed - either related to the new broadband connection or otherwise. I checked for updates to the OS (nothing).
I tried turning Airport off and at first it seemed better and I also did not have the ethernet connected.  I also did an SMS reset? No change.
    Good suggestions though.
Oh, I am running Parallels6.  I've shut windows down, performed a clean disk and system clean with Trend Micro.
