For those who have switched to arctic silver w/o changing heatsinks. How much did your temps change?

i just went from stock -> zalman + zalman goop (got 10c drops on load) --> zalman + arctic silver 5 (got 5c less than stock, or 5c more than zalman goop) in an attempt to cure my temp problems. ill see how it is tomorrow :D goodnight, i may go back to zalmy goop ~  im currently at 65 under load. slowly going up to 67 where zalmy went from 60-slowly to 63.
edit, these are mbm5 readings by the way.
And yes, i have read the thread about thermal paste. Yes, i know what a bb is.
zalmy + either goop + 990mhz = 43c though. all time low fer me!~
every time i see tiresmokes mbm5 temps. . . . !!! i want =P
edit; i just had to quote sab. . HAD to.

    6) now unplug and plug in ur iphone again. There u go u iphone name changes to its original name.

I am having this problem.  At first with the new iPhone 5, and then with the iPad 2.  I am not sure why this is happening.
My gut feeling is this is an iO6 issue and here's why -
The problem mainly occurs with apps.  I have about 150 apps, and when I plugged in the phone, iTunes went to sync all of them.  The process would hang up after about 20 - 30 apps were loaded onto the phone. I could tell where about the process hung up because the apps on the phone showed up as "waiting".
Then on the iPad 2 I plugged in to sync and saw there was a huge "Other" component in my storage.  It required me to restore the iPad 2 from backup.  With this restore the same issues occurred - putting the apps back on the iPad would hang up.  The videos on the iPad also got stuck - maybe after about 10 hours of videos transfered iTunes crashed.
My solution has been to soft reset the device, restart Windows, and continue the process until it's complete.  This is remarkably inefficient and time-intensive but everything works with patience.
I have been wondering if others have had these same problems.

I upgraded to OS8 for my Iphone 5 and now I have no access to e-mail and several apps. How can I address this problem? For those who have an iphone 5 I recommend not upgrading to the new OS until these bugs are resolved.

I foolishly downloaded OS8 on my iPhone 4S. It not only greyed out my wifi button making it impossiblr to use wifi, but bluetooth connection doesn't work either. I reset the phone to factory settings but that did nothing apart from loose all my photos and contacts. OS 8 was still on after too. Apple say it is a problem but the download only brought the fact the hardware was faulty to the fore, but not being under warranty , the repair would cost £166 that I would have to pay. Totally unacceptable. If the problem was known and they knew it would cause problems on older models, why have it bob up on iTUNES for download.
Don;t download it guys, APPLE aren't admitting culpability and it will cost you a fortune to put right!!

  • Future Music good for those who have not yet learned all

Future Music Magazine, which I get on the magazine rack at my WalMart, has some good stuff in November-December issues for those who need to learn more. I am talking about a two-part article, "The A to Z of digital music". or something like that. A through M is covered in the November issue. N through Z is planned for December. Topics A-Z are explained in a paragraph or more. EQ is covered for example. November also has a tutorial sort of thing on Reverb.
Future Music has not always been so helpful. I did not find much in the October issue akin to what I have mentioned above.
I think these two issues of Future Music will be quite helpful to me and perhaps to others among us also.
    LuckyMan

Correction. Various topics, beginning with A through Z, are EACH explained in a paragraph or more. Sometimes there is a little essay on a topic. Good for newbies and sometimes good for non-newbies who must do not know it all yet.

  • For those who have taken SCJA

Are the questions on the SCJA of the same difficulty as represented in the on-line test(s) here:
    http://193.192.249.9/ExamScam/get.jsp
Or, is the author of theses 'ExamScam's, actually making the tests look harder than they are to spook people into buying their products?

    No spooks there!
The exam questions are extremely similar to the ones you actually experience on the exam.
Which questions did you find hard? The server and client technology questions are tough, but that's probably the toughest part of the exam.
The OO and UML mock exam simulations are right on target, emphasizing the is-a and has-a type stuff.
By the way, students who have bought the books, and taken the exams have done amazing - we're talking scores in the high 90's.
By the way, I've actually posted a few new mock certification exams as well:

  • For those who have installed a new hard drive...

Like many of my fellow Mac-Heads, I am running out of storage spae on my little G4 12-inch. I have the 80G Fujitsu and would like to upgrade for more space. There are some 120G notbook drives on sale right now, and my scenario would go something like this:
    1. Get the 120G Samsung ATA drive
    2. Buy an eclosure to make the new drive an external drive
    3. Run Disk Utility and copy my 80G drive contents onto the new 120G in the enclosure
    4. Follow the online steps and intall the new 120G drive into the drive bay in my little G4 12-inch (looks fun and do-able!)
    5. Run this configuration for a while, maybe a few weeks, and make sure it is all kosher with the new 120G drive inside.
Once complete, this would give me a new 120G internal drive and a whole 80G drive of external storage.
Problem is, I am not sure that it would work. You see, the 80G drive is partitioned and do not know how this would affect my swap.
Has anyone tried this, and what effects, if any, would I incur in the trade? How would the formatting of the new 120G drive be affected, aside from the usual "loss" of a few Gigs in the formatting process? Would it end up only being able to see the size of the original drive? (I am technically competent in the physical swap so that is not an issue.)

I did this about a year ago, but I went from 40 to 80gb. I pulled the 40 out and installed the 80. I put the 40 into a firewire enclosure. I installed a fresh copy of 10.4 onto my new 80gb. And then I transfered all the files I needed from the 40 to the 80 - i.e. back onto my powerbook.
I was lucky in that I went from 5400rpm to 7200rpm and my little revision A 12" seemed zippy again. - till I crammed it full again within 6 months. The real solution is to have a honkin' external hd to keep the really big files on.
Of course, I backed up the 40 on a separate 40gb external before I began.
Haven't looked back and I now have a small 40gb "rescue" disk.

  • 10.5.3 update -A possible solution for those who have hard spinning fans!!!

    Hey people!
I've been diggin around the internet for a solution to this problem... I couldn't find anything at all till I started to mess with my macbook around... I tried to reindex the spotlight by deleting the previous indexed list of files with an app called "spotless" but nothing happened. I even tried to reset the SMC - system management controller - but still nothing happened... I tried some other things out but I had come out unsuccessful TILL... I remembered myself to try all this out in safe mode....
This was so far the strangest thing I've ever experienced on a mac... by entering in safe mode the fans just started to ramp down and my laptop returned to what it used to be! Just that - entering on safe mode! After entering and after listening to the fans loosing speed, I rebooted in normal mode and my laptop was healthy again!
To start up into safe mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
    - Be sure the computer is shut down.
    - Press the power button.
    - Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
P.S. - if you get lucky with this procedure just reply me and spread the word!
    Good luck!

Actually... it really solved the problem for me! My computer have sounded like a jet plane for the last couple of days. But I'm not sure if the only solution is to boot into safe mode. I recommend you to do like this:
1.) Remove the spotlight indexes and disable the service if you don't use it. You can use Spotless to do this. You find it here: http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Spotless-Download-9834.html
2.) Reset the SMC. Om a MacBook, you turn the computer off and remove AC and the battery. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Insert the AC but NOT the battery and boot the computer. Shut it down and install the battery.
3.) After the SMC reset, boot the computer into safe mode by holding the shift key during boot up.
4.) Let the fans spin down in safe mode for a couple of minutes.
5.) Restart the computer into normal mode and the fans should now be spinning normally again!
This worked for me, but only in the order above!

  • Looking for feedback from those who have installed Windows

I have an Intel iMac - brilliant machine, I love it. I have not installed Windows : I just don't have the need to justify doing it, but I'm glad to know I can if I do need, or just want to.
Having a Mac is almost like being immune to viruses (almost - I'm not careless). Everytime I use a PC there are message about viruses - it must drive them crazy! And to install Windows on my iMac would render it vulnerable.
I'm just looking for feedback from those who have taken the plunge: how's it working for you? I'm not so concerned about the speed...more so about .exe files running amok.
There is no way I will install Windows without a valid need and hearing at least a couple of first hand user experiences

I HAVE SPENT 1 HOUR TODAY AT THE APPLE SHOP ASKING THE GENIUS GUY - WHY ARE APPLE COMPUTERS IMMUNE TO VIRUS AND HOW DO I PROTECT MY PERSONAL INFORMATION FROM BEING INTERROGATED AND TRANSMITTED TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
MY QUERY STEMS FROM EMAILS - IF THEY HAVE A PICTURE ATTACHED THE MACHINE WILL NOT OPEN THE PICTURES - THE MESSAGE SAYS TO PROTECT MY IDENTITY CLICK HERE IF YOU WISH TO DOWNLOAD. I HAVE TO MAKE A JUDGEMENT TO TRUST THE SITE WHICH SEEMS ODD AND SO WHEN I ALLOW THE DOWN - I DO WONDER WHAT IS GOING ON.
I DO RUN A SEPARATE PC AND WHEN I DOWN LOAD THE MAILS ONTO THAT COMPUTER MY NORTON ENGAGES AND WARNS OF INFORMATION OF PRIVATE NATURE BEING ATTEMPTED TO BE TRANSMITTED - AT THAT STAGE I CAN STOP THE TRANSMISSION - ON THE MAC I HAVE NO MEANS - THE GENIUS GUY SAYS DON'T WORRY.
HELP - CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS IT ABOUT MAC THAT WOULD SETTLE MY CONCERNS AND ALLOW ME TO DOWN LOAD IMAGES CONTAINED IN EMAIL WITHOUT WORRY OF THE COMPUTER BEING FRISKED FOR DATA AND IT BEING TRANSMITTED INTO THE OUTSIDE WORLD.

  • Network Drive Mapping for users who have Port 445 (possibly others) Blocked by their ISP to a Server 2008 system

Nice to see my original posts are still up.  I was hoping that in the ensuing time someone had found a solution.  At least I can now see many other posting the same problems.  :)  Thought I was losing it for a while.
We have 100% proven that the problem (in our case) is from the ISP blocking port 445 (possibly others but 445 for SURE) with the reasoning that it prevents the spread of some Internet "worms".  It also just happens to prevent people who work
from home from being able to map to their network drives at work.
What I was hoping was that eventually someone would comer up with a solution for this short of having to load a server using a different OS from Windows.  The SMB protocol is the one needing port 445 as far as I can tell.  Not all ISP block
port 445 and the laptops that use those ISP's  have no problem.  Unless they travel.  Then it is "hit or miss" as to whether the ISP for the Hotel they stay at blocks it.
I have run multiple tests to prove that this was in FACT the problem.  Even the particular ISP in question which is a very large national ISP company freely admits they do this supposedly to prevent the spread of an unnamed Internet Worm.  It also
happens to prevent Business use of their Internet by Home Subscribers at they cannot map to their Business Servers which also need port 445 to map.
I have used WebDAV successfully to get around this but at a huge loss of speed and performance.  Cloud services all do essentially the same thing and all have pretty much the same loss of speed.
If anyone has come across a method of allowing a drive mapping to be rerouted to any other port, that is the only hope I have short of changing to an alternate OS for the Office Server and even then I cant be sure until I try if it would help.  I read
somewhere about the possibility of routing through a proxy but again, the problem would still be that the requests for mapping are expected on port 445 on the server and they will not get through even to the proxy since the originating ISP is the one blocking
the port from the User's system.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  I have posted this question now for several years with no one yet providing a working solution.  Hope burns Eternal though :)

Yes, OwnCloud is an option as well as many others.  Even self hosted Cloud services such as the WD MyCloud all work.  The problem is speed.  JungleDisk is the best I have found so far.  I am not sure exactly what they use to allow the
drive mapping but it seems to work faster that anything else I have found.
VPN's don't work.  At least none of them I have tried.   I can connect a VPN with no problem.  But still cannot map a drive over it.   Actually, there are some issues with the VPN as well but these are just a matter of methodology.
Mapping to the FQDN works for some people while others require the public IP.  Some users on some ISP's can map using the FQDN, others have to map to the IP.  That in itself was a bit odd.
I have tried every trick I could find including adding  the IP and/or FQDN to the Windows Hosts file on the server as well as on the client systems.  This actually did help to get the VPN to connect in some cases.  However, it still would
not allow me to map a drive letter.
I can create a Network Place,  This also works.  But it will not allow me to MAP that "network place" to a drive letter.  I have tried multiple utilities that allow mapping of Drive letters to almost anything but they wont work to map to a
    Network Place.
The software that needs the mapped drive is a SQL database which runs on port 2004.  The program itself has no problems at all connecting to the server to run the database.  Even on systems which cannot map to the needed drive letter for the documents
referred to in the database.    Users can run it and look up all kinds of material but it it is only a half-solution since the database refers to files stored in a "common-mapped" drive letter.  Which I cannot Map.
I have tried every possible configuration of the VPN setup I could find, I have even tried a "Test System" with the NIC connected directly to the T1 Modem.  With all firewalls off and no AV software.  Even if that had worked,  there is no
way I could run like that.  But it didn't.  Same issues.  All this did was put the blame squarely on the User's ISP which was the only reason I did it.  I had to rule out even the slightest chance that it was something in our equipment.
This was already almost a certain fact since the same user could take their laptop to a WiFi Hotspot at a fast food restaurant and connect as well as map the drive.  As soon as they went back home, no drive.  On the ones I could convince to pay
the extra charges, if they switched to a business connection from their ISP, No Problems.
On most MiFi or other Cellular Internet devices, No Problem,  Although that had a habit of changing.  We had a few that worked for a while, then they got a software update for their MiFi which immediately blocked the ability to map.  Others
it would be that some models of Cellular HotSpot units worked while other would not work even if both came from the same carrier.
Coincidentally, we had none of these problems before two other events occurred:
One was the release of Server 2008 R2, (which was a kid of "surprise" change for all of us used to Server 2008 R1.  Welcomed changes, but not expected with a simple SP release.
The other was IPV6 finally became a reality:  June of 2012.
This left us with much head scratching as to what was the real cause of the problem.  It took months to narrow it down to port blocking by the Outside ISP's with a 100% certainty.  Even tried reloading a system with Server 2008 R1 just to rule
that out.  As well as disabling IPV6 on every network device.  The problem stayed with the User when Outside and which ISP they were connected to.
Currently we are using a mix of normal VPNs for those who can run them, and CLOUD access for those who can't.  Even this is problematic since we have to keep both the local copy and the cloud copy in constant sync so that everyone sees the same versions
of the same files on each one.
Sorry to make this so long but I wanted to cover everything to show that we tried it all.  The only thing left short of getting the ISP's to remove the port blocks would be to find a way to route the SMB file requests around port 445 in some way.
I have been told that this is easy enough if using a file system other than Windows but that is not an option even if true.
Thanks for the updates and ideas.  I keep hoping that eventually there will be some secure method for mapping a drive letter that does not depend on having port 445.

  • A Few Quick Tips For Those Who Are New To Fios Quantum and the New Quantum Update

Most of those who have quantum received the new update early this morning (8/12/14)
There are a lot of people that are new to fios who never had anything prior to quantum so I thought I'd make this post to help.
Those who had the older boxes prior to quantum should already know about all of this.
The new update now reflects what the older stb/dr's have and have had for awhile now. There are now more menu settings you will want to go through.
The ad banner guide at the bottom can be disabled. Go to menu > Notifications > Guide Banner > set to disable
The banner will still be there, but will show Verizon rather then ads.
The home screen can be turned off. There is an option to turn it off within the home screen or you can go to menu > Notifications > Promotions > set to disable
The led on the boxes have been changed. If you want to change it go to menu > System > Media Server Settings > LED Brightness.
The Auto Power Off option is set to 4 hours by default. If you don't want the box to turn off automatically you will want to disable this. Menu > System > Media Server Settings > Auto Power Off > set to none
There is now the option to change the guides banners times outs. Menu > Settings > System > Television > Info Bar Time Out (also Channel Bar Timeout)
Some on other forums mentioned the video formats have been changed so its a good idea to check the option out to see if it reflects what you want. Menu > Settings > Audio & Video > Video Settings > Video Format
The aspect # button now works so any SD channels that are boxed can now be stretched using the # button.
I'm happy to see this option back.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for the info regarding the latest update. I like some of the new/improved options, however I am highly disappointed that the update discontinued the reminder option. I would think that setting a program reminder is a highly used feature and many will be unhappy now that it is gone. I know I surely am!

  • Possible upgrade solution for people who have HD and problems in general.

OK, for me, Leopard has been as painful as going osx from OS9, at least the upgrade has been , dunno about the retail copy., bugs, bugs, bugs with the upgrade for sure.
Here is what happens generally., you upgrade and basically you need to run disk tools from a external drive or the Leopard DVD., the problems move on still.
Solution i found was to back up to another drive, that is right guys, spend another hundred bucks no one warned you about., get a external HD or if your living it high and collect macs as Apple assumes you may just have a second Intel mac laying around with a Sata drive in it to start up in "Firewire Target Mode", (hold the "T" at start up)and start cloning your drive with SuperDuper (also need to purchase)..
    Ok
1- once you clone your drive (usualy a hour for the base system alone).
2- erase it as one partition,
3- in the options make sure it is set as GUID partition (takes about a hour) and
4- then as well zero out all the data., takes about 2 hours there as well.
5- Now run disk utilities from the Leopard DVD or the computer or booted up drive you used to do all this., if you can not fix permission of th volume you seen to reformat the Drive again 7 pass!, could take 4 hours.
Finally you will be able re clone it, and run disk tools after a days work no one warned you about.
*This disk utilities operation may take about 1 hour but say 11, and look like this below;*

    *Good luck*
*My ADVISE:* if you experienced these problems, as above, reformatting by zeroing out the data works. as for those who want Leopard. *DO NOT UPGRADE but install a RETAIL version of LEOPARD* until apple has a update,
I read posts where people who have the retail copy (full DVD) have not experienced these problems, mine was a upgrade from Tiger since i got a mac in the last 30 days.
WARNING: it has been hard to trust Apple fanatics with these things now days, many posts are denials to things not working so i could be wrong there as well, been honest saves time is all i can advise them.
If anyone has beter advise please do post it.

And what is yaml all about, shows up in disk utilities for hundreds if not thousands of issues?

  • Some dvi questions for those who really know there stuff!

Hi all, haven't lurked these forums in a few weeks but just had a quick question for those who wanna build up some "points". I'm trying to connect my MBP 15" (1.83ghz) to my Dell LCD 26" T.V. via DVI. Anyhoo, the DVI port on an MBP is a DVI-I (Dual link 24 + 5 pin) fenmale port while my Dell LCD sports a DVI-D (Dual link 24 + 1 pin) female port. Anyhoo, I went to my local Circuit City store and picked up a 6.6ft DVI-D (Single link 18 + 1 pin) male cable to hook both devices up. Should this work? If those have no idea what I'm talking about, I've included a link with a picture of allt he different DVI ports:

If I haven't explained myself well, please post and I'll do my best to clarify.

Am I missing something? Do you actually have a problem making this work? If the plugs you chose are mechanically compatible (and both are DVI D, dual-link), then there should not be a problem.
Ah. I see the concern. The extra four pins. I believe they make the connector able to supply hybrid DVI-A and DVI-D. The Mac output is hybrid so it can easily be adapted drive a VGA monitor, too.
I think you should be fine.
I have a ViewSonic 1600x1200 LCD monitor with a DVI (single) and it works superbly with the Mac.

    STEP FOUR:
you're almost finished! Here, select what size of a file you want. Remember, MP3 files will be bigger, for less quality.

GB only exports to AIFF files, you need to make conversions in iTunes:
