For those without Quartz Extreme.

I am now quite impatient for the fix to the STP 1.02 update to enable it to run without Quartz Extreme. Failing that, please put 1.01 back up somewhere.
I cannot believe that this was not in a Read Me file with the update.

  • Run numbers without quartz extreme?

Hello. Is it possible to run all the iwork apps without quartz extreme enabled? I ask this because I am trying to run the iwork suite inside parallels virtual machines which do not support quartz extreme. I can get pages to work by setting <key>SFRAcceleratedCanvas</key> in Defaults.plist to <false/> but this does not seem to work for numbers as it doesn't even have a Defaults.plist
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much.
    ~ Ben

My Bad. I was thinking about Keynote. Keynote doesn't have the Defaults.plist. I should have said Numbers doesn't contain the <key>SFRAcceleratedCanvas</key> attribute in the Defaults.plist and adding it does nothing.
For Keynote if you create a Defaults.plist with just <key>SFRAcceleratedCanvas</key> in the plist it will launch the app without quartz extreme.
    Thanks for responding also.

  • How to run FCP on an iBook without Quartz Extreme?

Hi, I would like to be able to run FCP 5 on my existing iBook G4 (1.2GHz with 512MB RAM). Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio should run fine but I believe FCP will not launch without a Quartz Extreme graphics adapter (and I don't have the cash to upgrade to a MacBook Pro!) I have heard there is a hack available to allow FCP 5 to run on lower-spec graphics chips... anyone know where I could find this hack? Are there any associated issues?
    Cheers,
    Tom

Of the two, target mode would be far more efficient (and less risky -- in terms of software data corruption). I have in the past installed OS X on a machine with a poor DVD drive, so iLife should be no problem.

  • Tip: For those losing airport extreme connectivity after 2007 update

After the most recent Airport Extreme update, I started losing my connection to previously working wireless networks. There was never an issue for the 6 months prior to this most recent update. Therefore the update changed something. Many of the posts regarding this subject steer the finger pointing away from Apple. All I know is that my wireless connectivty worked fine for the last six months and stopped working after the update. The following link from MacFixit.com worked for me: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070129234632441
The MacFixit posting is as follows: "Success with .plist deletion A more innocuous workaround -- deleting potentially corrupt .plist files (as described in our Wireless troubleshooting tutorial) -- has been successful for others.
    One reader writes:
"After applying the Airport Extreme Update 2007-001, my Airport Extreme was shutting down every time my Aluminum PowerBook G4 went to sleep. It was very frustrating, but I thought it might have been a "security feature" in the new update. Then I found your wireless troubleshooting tutorial and following directions in the "Delete specific .plist files" section did the trick.
The files to be deleted are located in the ~/Library/Preferences/ directory (this is the Library directory within your User folder), and are as follows:"
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
After deleting these .plist files I have had stable connectivity again with no issues. The update apparently corrupted one or all of these files. I would try deleting them and then restart your computer. As noted, it is an easy fix and does not hurt anything to try...I hope it helps others looking for answers on this subject. Don
    MacBook Pro - 17" - Intel 2.16Ghz - 2G RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I too have run into the same problem as ‘controls.freq’ although sometimes the light just stays amber (like controls.freq’s documented post) and other times it stays solid green after clicking "Update." No matter, the result is the same -- I have to perform a hard reset (pull the plug) of the Airport Extreme and none of my changes have been made. I not only run into this when trying to add static DHCP addresses (like controls.freq), but also when trying to add MAC addresses to timed access control lists, or (when playing around) trying to change my wireless network name .... honestly, it probably fails for many other changes too.
So I tried what Bob suggested -- but no luck. A lot of effort but no reward. I tried loading 7.4 firmware (tried both 7.4.2 and 7.4.1 which ran more reliably in my environment) and then doing the factory reset, then upgrading to 7.5.2 and setting everything up. But after maybe one successful save of settings, all subsequent saves failed as described earlier. Then I tried a factory reset while running 7.5.2 and ran into the same problem after maybe the first successful save.
The only reliable workaround is to DOWNGRADE to 7.4.x, make the necessary changes, and then upgrade again to 7.5.2. I must say ... if there were some way I could get the system to stop offering new code reliably (that doesn’t even work even when I tell it I don’t want to check for updates), then I’d just stay with 7.4.1 throughout the environment with success.

  • HT5254 Flashback Removal Tools available for those WITHOUT Java installed?

Apple's own KB says that this tool is available for "OS X v10.7 or later without Java installed". Is this a typo? Am I missing something? (I do that from time-to-time.)
You must have Java installed in order to become infected by Flashback.
I have Java installed, and when I ran Software Update, there was nothing new available. Can anyone with Java installed confirm that they were able to download and run this tool via Software Update?

Okay, as long as the recent Java update performed the same job and removed the malware, I guess Java users are in good shape.
I never had Flashback in any case, but this KB was confusingly worded—at least to me.

  • For Those Without Flash Player

I have designed a banner to go across the top of my web page and it looks great. However, there are some people that come to my site that do not have the flash player installed on their computer.
Is there a way to have my site show them a jpeg image instead of flash automatically?

Yes, search Google using the terms "show alternate to Flash" and you should get several results that will help you.

  • Any other solutions regarding the sudden Quartz extreme message for iMovie?

iMovie suddenly won't open (Quartz extreme required) and no solutions mentioned here seem to help. I've tried changing the resolutions temporarily, restarting, permissions repair, deleting the com.apple/imovie.plist from library preferences, software update, deleting iMovie then redownloading (from an external HD), and it's still not opening even though I've made movies in the past. I did download the iDisplay app to use an ipad as a second monitor, which I thought may have caused the problem. So, I deleted iDisplay from my HD and emptied the trash. Still no iMovie. I'm outside of warranty and don't want to pay money to have Apple Canada fix their own issues - so please help. Thanks.

I have the same problem on my brand new MacBook running 10.5.4... One suggestion was to change the colors from millions and then back but I don't even have that option in my display panels. In another thread I found something that worksL
If I simply log off and back on, then everything is fine again (no need to restart). It will show it as supported in the system info. At first I used to restart, but for the sake of trying it out once, I decided to just log off and on. It had the same effect as restarting, so that's what I do now.
ANd in yet another answer I found something that worked for me: change the display resolution and then change it back.
Obviously some display setting is getting corrupted in some fashion and in my case I'm using with and without an external monitor, so perhaps it loses some needed preference...

  • FCP does not work after sleep - asking for quartz extreme card

    Hi all,
Well my 2 x 2.266 Dual Core Intel xeon with 5 gig memory is getting a little long in the tooth and I have started coming up against what I suspect is hardware issues.
    The OSX is 10.5.8
It has a blackmagic HD card as well as an ESATA rocketraid card.
I have a sohoraid attached as well as a Drobo (via firewire).
In the last couple of months I l've had a bunch of issues that I wonder if are at all related.
Firstly the DVD player app now freezes the whole computer if I try and start it.
when it first did this I spent forever rebuilding the system for it to only fall over again a month or so later.
    2) In the last couple of weeks, when I wake from sleep the mouse icon is gone and what is in its place is a small area of distorted, broken pixels. Still works as a mouse (the distorted pixels move round like an arrow) and the arrow returns when I tab through to another application. Weird...
    3) In that same time when I have started Final Cut Pro it immediately gives me a warning saying a quartz extreme video vard is required to run application and refuses to open. Restarting computer fixes this but this is a new development.
    4) I ran into an issue at beginning of the year with my soho 5bay raid where it said a drive failed and then couldn't rebuild with a new drive, took it to shop and it blinked into life on their computer. Drive was never broken. Its now back and running as it should, like it always did, but they couldn't see what went wrong.
These of course could be a unrelated but I somehow suspect not.
Any first 'go-to's" you would recommend to just try and trouble shoot this?
    THANK YOU!!!!

    Try these in this order:
    1. Set Mac to NEVER SLEEP. No exceptions.
    2. Repair Permissions on all drives.
    3. Trash Preferences for offending apps.
    4. Wipe and re-install fresh OS and apps every 6-18 months.

    I agree.
It was very useful to reduce everything to small and quickly scan down looking for missing artwork.
Particularly useful when I only connect to the machine with iTunes via screen sharing, so everything can be a bit slower to scroll through at times.
In fact, itunes 11 when used purely as a server for Apple TV etc is a downgrade in usability IMO, as they've got rid of some of the useful views that helped me manage my library remotely.

s there a way to have Quartz Extreme enabled even if without a display??

The detection of presence or absence of a display happens at a very low level in the Mac architecture. As far as I know there is no way to manipulate files in OS X to trick the Mac into thinking a display is present. But there are ways around this.
One method would be to purchase an item like Gefen's DVI Detective. It will make the mini think a display is present. But it is not cheap.
Another method that I believe works is to get a bare VGA connector and solder termination resistors between the Vsync pin and ground pin and also the Hsync pin and ground pin. Also, from RGB to ground pins. The Mac will sense these terminations and think a display is attached when this VGA connector is attached through the DVI/VGA adapter.

  • Adding a 3rd display with quartz extreme enabled

    Hello,
I'm running a dual 2.0ghz G5, and I'm looking for a graphics card that will allow me to add an extra quartz extreme enabled monitor. Based on a few recommendations I picked up the ATI 9200, but this is when I ran into the problem. Everything is choppy, and it makes it difficult to go between the QE enabled monitors and the non-QE monitor without being distracted by the difference. Are there any solutions out there for me?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Trey,
Make that parameter to Optional prompt, to make optional prompt in the paremeter you need to change the properties of parameter as Optional prompt as "true".
with the optional prompt if you specify 'yes' it will display those vales, if 'NO' it will display those values, if you didn't specify any values then it will display all values.
the formula is look like the below
if (HasValue({?OpenToPublic}) = "Both" then true
    else if {?OpenToPublic} = 'Yes' then {rpt_DriveMaster.OpenToPublic} = True
    else if {?OpenToPublic} = 'No' then {rpt_DriveMaster.OpenToPublic} = False
Hope the above information will help you.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • FCE won't open on my new MacBook Pro - says I need a Quartz Extreme Card

I just bought a new MacBook Pro Laptop, and since I was having lots of hardware and software related problems with my old one, I clean installed everything rather than transferring things through archive.
Anyhow, I was initially able to register and install FCE from the original disk and then downloaded and installed all available upgrades. I opened it up, tried "Log and Transfer" to upload some video I'd shot on my Canon Vixia HFS10, and it worked fine. I saved and closed, but now, next morning when I tried to open FCE to edit my video it wouldn't open. A "Minimum System Check" came up that said "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Express requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme Capable Video Card." I'm pretty sure that my NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT cards meet the requirements and that Final Cut Express just doesn't recognize that they are much better than the minimum requirements it is programmed to look for. How can I fix this? I saw another thread on a similar topic suggesting that someone delete their FCE, and then perform a clean install, but that's effectively what I've just gone through, and I'm not in the mood to spend a couple of hours seeing if the same thing I just did fixes the problem I have now. This seems like something that would be an easy programming fix, probably a simple modification to a preferences file, but I wonder if anyone out there has the solution?
    Message was edited by: nate.andersen

No, I have FCE 4 - should have said that - and it worked on my older Intel based MacBook Pro.
As it turns out, though, I think I've solved the problem, adapting a solution to a related problem I found on MacRumors.com. Don't know why this is necessary, but here's the solution I tried:
    1. right click on the FCE application icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    2. open the "Contents" folder and then open the "info.plist" folder in Text Edit
    3. find the line that says: "<key>AELMinimumQuartzExtremeCapable</key>," and replace it with "<key>AELMinimumGeForceCapable</key>", and then make sure that the next line says "<string></string>" without any number specified. Or, if you have some other kind of graphics card that you know is compatible, you could say what that is instead of GeForce. I found it doesn't work just to delete this line completely.
Again, I don't know why Apple didn't build in this flexibility when they updated their standard Graphics cards, but in any case this solution seems to work.

  • Final cut pro requires you to have a quartz extreme graphics card

When I open Final Cut Pro, it says final cut pro requires you to have a quartz extreme graphics card. However, I have used the same thing for over a year already without any problems! Please help!
It's an iMac 27inch quad core late 2009

I bet you used Software update to download a few items recently (including a recent system update), and have not yet restarted your Mac. To confirm this, launch software update, and follow the instructions. Once you restart and the install completes, relaunch FCP, and you'll probably be good.
(I just did that to myself the other day).
    Hope it helps!

  • FCS Compressor issues - Quartz Extreme not loading on headless XServe

    Hi,
I am running FCS on a OS X Leopard Server Intel XServe...installed a Quartz Extreme GPU (an old stock nVidia 7300 taken from a Mac Pro) to meet the specs. Everything worked fine. However I want to run the system headless - it is an XServe in a rack! Only problem is that without a monitor attached to the GPU, the XServe fails to acknowledge the existence of the GPU. Quartz Extreme does not load. Compressor will not launch if opened (explaining that I have no GPU!) and the automatic encodes from FCS come out as 0Mbyte .mov files. I admit I already knew about the issue of Final Cut Studio apps not running on a headless machine, even with a GPU installed. I just assumed Apple must have fixed this one for FCS because it is server software....I am guessing plenty of people must actually run FCS on headless machines....what's the trick to getting encoding to work?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

Depending on your xServe, you can just stick the dongle in the back and it should activate Quartz Extreme. You shouldn't have to install another graphics card. If you have an older xserve, you may have to hook up a monitor to the dongle.
