For Video/Audio: Macbook Pro (2009-17" 2.66Ghz i7) vs. Macbook Pro (Current 2011-15" 2.4Ghz i7))

So I currently have a MacbookPro 6,1 - I believe a late 2009 model, 17" 2.66Ghz i7 Dual-Core Processor, 8gb Ram (updated), NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. I started doing video and even noticed this when I normally do my audio work - that my video doesn't look like it should (noticed when a client looked at my computer screen and noticed that colors, brightness was off and extra grainy as compared to other computers he has seen his work on. I also noticed I sometimes get a lag when playing video causing me to have sync issues (off by a couple frames or so -- which completely ***** when I'm trying to do my job right).
So I found a sweet deal on the newer Macbook Pros. Seller told me it retails for around $2400 so I'm assuming it's the Quad-Core 2.4Ghz 15" with some minor upgrades. Let's just say it's this particular model - am I better off selling my older model for this one? I would just hate to part with my 17" although it would help take off some travel weight.
I'm not good with specs which is why I'm here, but apple store says it has:
Intel HD Graphics 3000
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB GDDR5
And I think that might help solve my problems, on top of the Quad-Core addition which I believe my current macbook6,1 doesn't have right?
Thanks!

Thanks. At this point, portability isn't that important which is why I'm thinking of the upgrade. How do you figure that the iMac is better. The specs on my MBP are still superior with the i7 at 2.5GHz vs the iMacs i5 at 3.5GHz.... hm.. isn't the i7 faster than the i5?
Not in this case.  The iMac has a "Haswell' CPU whereas the MBP has a 'Sandy Bridge' CPU, two different generations of processors.  To graphically illustrate the performance differences between the two options look at the respective machines in this link:
https://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Note that the iMac registers a score of 3893 vs the MBP score of 2700.  In real world terms, differences of a couple of hundred points often is inconsequential, but here we are dealing with a very significant difference of over a thousand points.
If portability is not a requirement and the bank account is fat, the iMac is by far the better choice.  A larger and better display combined with much superior CPU and GPU.
Ciao.

  • Always no response for video/audio chat

neophyte here; and i cannot gasp ichat yet; i tried once with a Mac friend, but everytime I add her to my buddy list, she goes offline and I couldn't reply to any of her messages as there is no message line for me to type in. Also, everytime I invite her for audio/video chat, it is always NO RESPONSE, eventhough my friend had accepted it. How does this iChat work? I've just bought iSight, but it looks like i will have to use it with other applications. Thanks for reading!

    Hi White Apple,
    1) You have to enter your Buddies to the Buddy list with the right Account type.
Using the wrong account type make your Buddy appear to be a completely different person and they will not be on line as there is little chance that that name is also taken.
The Buddy also has to have you in an Allow list.
    2) To log on and register changes to you Buddy List your modem has to be open to the UDP protocol on port 5190.
Is anyone in your Buddy list ?
There are some Autoresponding accounts in Table 1 here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html

  • Keyboard shortcut for Video/Audio track destination?

  • Version 4+, extensions for video & audio record/save, great. Now, version 5... they are all gone! Why?

Firefox kept putting box on screen to inform me to download new version 5. I finally did. Now, the extensions I did have are no longer there. How do I get them back? Will they work with V5?

Due to security vulnerabilities, rolling back to Firefox 4.0.1 is not recommended. Firefox 3.6.18 would be the safer choice.
Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
    Close Firefox 5.
You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.

  • HOW TO REPLACE HARD DRIVE WHITE MACBOOK EARLY 2009

I have a White MacBook Early 2009, I need suggestions. My Macbook is still running fine, but would like to know which Hard Drive I should purchase as replacement. Thinking of going 500GB if possible, I already downloaded the instructions. Just trying to get my ducks in order for when that time comes, hopefully not for a few more years.

For a new hard drive try Newegg.com
Regular SATA drives http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE  Use the list at the left for larger and faster drives.
    SSD drives
http://www.newegg.com/Internal-SSD/SubCategory/ID-636?Order=PRICE  Use the list at the left for larger and faster drives.
Or OWC for regular hard drives and SSDs  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • How to install software (on CD) for Sony DCR-SR68 video camera on my 2009 MacBook Pro

How do I install software for a Sony DCR-SR68 video camera on my 2009 MacBook Pro? The manual that came with the camera says the software cannot be installed on "a Mackintosh", that I should contact Apple.

I think that's pretty clear, don't you? (And, if it does say "Mackintosh", I'll eat my bowler hat.)
You can't use the supplied software with Mac OS X. Either install Windows on your Mac, if you wish to use this software, or find out (eg, by googling) what other Mac users do with this camera.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2.3 GHz vs. 2.6/2.7 GHz for AVID Video/Audio Production

    Hi,
I am finally gearing up for my MacBook Pro purchase come early August for school. Although I have considered value powerhouse computers like Sager Notebooks, I am fairly certain I'm going to go with my gut and get the Mac. Although Google has undoubtedly been my friend, I have not found a satisfactory forum/discussion about my exact situation, so I'm hoping for some much needed suggestion.
    I will be installing:
AVID Media Composer 6 http://www.avid.com/US/products/media-composer#specifications and
    AVID Pro Tools 10 http://www.avid.com/US/products/pro-tools-software#Tech-Specifications0
Obviously, I plan on doing HD video editing, and high quality audio processing/editing. I am a full time student with a part time job and honestly do not have all the money in the world... But I want to make this Mac purchase a worthwhile investment, not just a purchase I will regret not being 100% sure about in the future
So, my question is, would the different clock speeds (2.3/2.6/2.7) truly make a significant difference in what I'm doing, how much difference, and which one would you recommend?
Note: I will upgrade the memory to 16GB either way.
Thank you all, I'm really excited to hear from you.
    Austin

I agree with Bimmer - the 2.6Ghz clock speed is exactly what you need for video editing. And with the non-Retina display, you can upgrade to 16GBs yourself.
I also agree with Bimmer on the SSD front. You can use a fast USB 3.0 external to store your projects (and perhaps use as scratch space - although if you keep the SSD pretty clean, it would be much faster). There are a wealth of SSDs out there for MacBook Pros now - anywhere from $350-800. Some are a little faster than others but I don't know that you'd actually notice the difference in real-world use. Bimmer was telling me about the Sandisk Extreme 480GB last night - seems to have some awfully fast clock speeds and right around $350. The Samsung 830 series gets consistently high marks. I have a Crucial m4 512GB with which I am pleased. It seems that more MacBook Pros have Crucial m4 series drives than most other brands and users are happy with them - and Crucial has great tech support for Macs which is something I appreciate.
So I would build into the cost of the computer both the extra RAM and a SSD and a fast external drive (or two - one to use as a Time Machine backup). You won't break the bank and you're obviously going to want a machine that does what you need to do quickly.
Just one more thing - if you can afford it, I'd go with the NVIDIA card with 1 GB of VRAM. That's twice the size as the stock 512k VRAM. It would just make things that much faster. Oh, and I would spend the extra $100 for the HD antiglare option - a little bit more screen res and the antiglare looks wonderful to me.
Good luck - remember that you can always call back here should you have any questions: both before and after your purchase...

  • Troubleshoot Sound output for Macbook Pro 2009

macbook pro 2009 Sound output choice does not drop down anything but "internal speakers" choice. HDMI cable streams video and no sound. Have swapped out HDMI and it recognizes no sound for either. I think it could be a faulty adaptor for HDMI cable connection? It used to work fine then it stopped working and gave me a planet screen on TV when video was playing fine on computer. I tried again after software updates and a new hard drive and now it streams the video but sound only comes out of internal speakers. Wondering if I could be missing something on my mac before I buy another adaptor.

Another option, if you need a multi-channel sound support is to use a Optical cable like -

From MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) - Technical Specifications (all the other Macs from 2009 also support optical digital audio).
    Audio
    Built-in stereo speakers
    Built-in omnidirectional microphone
Combined optical digital output/headphone out (user-selectable analog audio line in)
Supports Apple Stereo Headset with microphone

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:

  • How do I hear audio from my Macbook Pro 2009 to my LED TV?

I recently received an adapter for my Macbook Pro 2009, Mini DisplayPort (Mini DP) to HDMI Female Adapter + HDMI Cable for my birthday.  I knew before receiving this adapter I needed something to transmit audio to my TV.  However, th 1/8' (3.5mm) to RCA stereo audio cable I purchased does not work. Does anyone have a suggestion on which cable I need to purchase next to make the sound component work when connecting my laptop to my Toshiba LED TV?

The Mac's audio output doubles as a optical Toslink stereo mini jack, just use a adapter to regular Toslink and plug the optical cable to your surround sound system. Fiddle with the sound settings to enable optical output.
Mac's pass surround sound through, they don't do any processing.

  • Which Macbook Pro for Video Editing

I'd like to buy a macbook pro for video editing on the go and with all the available features, I can't tell which is best.
I use final cut pro 7 and all footage is HD.
    RAM?
    7200rpm vs. 5400 ?
    DUAL CORE vs. QUAD
    INTEL GRAPHICS?
    RETINA?
It's all very confusing, especially since I haven't looked into buying another mac since I purchased an iMac in '07 (which still rocks).

    - Get either a 7200 or SSD internal drive
*You'll need an external hard drive that runs at least 7200rpm for your media (scratch disk)
    - If you can affor it, go with a Quad Core
    - For graphics, I believe all the new MacBook Pros come with Intel HD Graphics 4000
    - As for CPU speed and RAM, they really go hand in hand with video editing.
    - CPU speed doesn't help if you do not have sufficient RAM cover all of needed video/audio/effect editing and rendering processes.
    - Slower CPU with more RAM means that procesess get covered by the additonal RAM, but will take longer to render and preview during editing.
*So when choosing CPU and RAM, do not sacrifice one for the other.
You can always upgrade RAM later if you can't afford it now.
    - Retina? Doesn't make much of a difference for you. You're not editing 4k video so chose what you like better, or   can afford.
Here a post that goes over some basics

MacBook Pro 2009. I cannot get audio from my my macbook pro to tv using an hdmi adapter

That is because the 2009 MBP does not support audio via the minidisplay port.  You will have to tap the audio output port for audio and use the RCA audio input connections on the TV.

I have a MacBook Pro with Version 10.7.3, 6 months old. Just recently when I play video, regardless of whether it's in iTunes, iMovie, or embedded in Keynote the video sticks, audio drops out for 1 -2 seconds or the shot freezes. What causes this and how is it fixed.
