For what it's worth . . . Safari 3 reinstall

I, too, unthinkingly did the Safari 4 upgrade on my MBP. I was immediately unimpressed with the new features, turned off what I could and pushed what I couldn't to the background as much as possible, and did NOT upgrade on the other machines. I work about 50-50 Safari & Firefox, because they both have advantages for different things I do, so I figured, no big deal.
Then a friend called saying the new upgrade crashes on launch. Somethings up. They had no other browser, so I downloaded Firefox and used a flash drive to get the .dmg onto their machine. Then yesterday, I had to stop what I was doing, so I closed the lid like I usually do, and when I came back about a half-hour later, the fan was roaring and the computer was locked up. I had to power down & restart. A little experimenting and I determined if Safari was open when I closed the lid it would hang everything.
So I came to these forums (on Firefox) to see what was going on and read a number of threads about archive & install and messing in terminal and so on. So I decided to try what I did some time ago when I installed the +Safari 3 beta+, which was unreliable, and I wanted to get rid of it the second day.
I trashed it and took the earlier Safari version that was in the Applications folder in the clone on my external hard drive and dropped it in the Applications folder on the computer. I had no problems for the months that went by until I finally upgraded to the final version (some time after the release).
Last night, I trashed Safari 4 and dropped in 3.2.1 from the clone and everything is still working fine.
It may not work for you, or you may not have a cloned version available, but sometimes simple solutions work fine.
Each of my computers has a bootable clone partition on an individual external hard drive, re-cloned on a regular schedule. I've never had a catastrophic failure where I've needed to boot from it, but I have down-graded applications a number of times. The Mini (which is used as a server) has developed some issues since going to 10.5.7 a couple of weeks ago, so I'm probably going to throw the cloned 10.5.6 back on, because it was nice & stable. I don't use TimeMachine and cloning is cheap insurance for a number of reasons.

Hi,
For most people, that's probably 'good enough' as most of the gripes seem to be about the GUI more than anything, but note that you haven't truly reverted things to how they were with Safari 3:
Last night, I trashed Safari 4 and dropped in 3.2.1 from the clone and everything is still working fine.
That doesn't rollback the system frameworks that were installed with Safari 4. For most users, it's probably not a problem. For web developers, the pages they work with won't be truly what Safari 3 would show. Just something to bear in mind.

  • For what it's worth

Literally. A few days ago, while sitting at my iMac, the familiar start of Buffalo Sprinfields- 'for what it's worth' began thumping from my speakers. Pretty soon I noticed there was no Steven Stills. It was the music and the background. Not a problem, reload at some point in the future. I have a copy synced to my iPad. It played fine. Today while listening to a radio station via iTunes the same song came on. No lead singer. Odd. I found and inserted my old CD and imported the song to iTunes. No lead vocals. Played the CD in iTunes. No lead vocals. I took the CD out to my car and played the CD. Works fine. Everythings there. I've checked some of my other old music and this song seems to be the only affecte song. Anybody else have this problem?

I had something similar happen to me once when I was using my computer routed through my stereo.  I had a faulty component in the wiring setup and it was just sending a single channel through both speakers.  For most music you barely notice it because the stereo channel split isn't all that great.  For this one track, however, all the vocals went through the channel that wasn't being played.  I had never heard this track before so it wasn't until somebody else heard me playing it the 5th time  and asked what had happened to the vocals I even knew there were some!

  • Firmware downgrade helped - for what it's worth

For quite some time now I experienced problems with my WDS Airport network at my home office (Airport Extreme base and Airport Express remote - NAT provided by OS X Server 10.3). My MacBook Pro would have problems staying connected to my Airport network. Kept on disconnecting, or showed that it was connected, but couldn't see any of the Airport base stations. Very strange.
I also noticed that it must have had something to do with my neighbors' wireless networks around me. It seemed that whenever a neighbor's wireless network came online it bumped me off.
Anyway, after experimenting with WEP, WAP and WAP2 encryptions, as well as with Open network settings only with access control list I gave up. My MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo simply couldn't stay connected.
So I started digging around a bit and I found posts that described similar issues for others with other computer models like Power Book G4, iMac, etc. Now, my Power Book G4 never had any issues staying connected to my Airport network (used to anyway).
I read in one of the posts that it may have something to do with the Airport Extreme (V5.7) and Express (V6.3) Firmware updates. So I decided to take the plunge backwards and downgrade my Airport Extreme/Express Firmwares to V6.1.1 for Express and V5.5.1 for Extreme.
The downgrade went ok. Initially I had no connection (I guess because my last setting used WAP2 which is not available for the older Firmwares, so the config file was not the right format), but after resetting my Airport Base Stations to WAP I had connection.
At night I put all of the computers on the Airport Network to sleep. In the morning I woke my Mac Book Pro from sleep only to discover that no Airport Network was available.
So I logged in to the Airports from the server and pretty much tried everything. Set it to WEP 40, WEP 128, back to WAP encryption.. nothing worked (non of the computers on the Airport Network were able to connect anymore). So I finally gave up and had to settle for an open network without encryption, only access control list and closed network, and guess what. It worked. All computers can once again connect to the Airport network, and no matter what goes on with my neighbors and their networks I can stay connected. Putting the Mac Book Pro to sleep, waking up.. connected. No more disconnects now for the last 24 hours. I know it's too soon to tell.
But it seems that there may be some sort of problem with the latest Airport Firmware upgrades. Downgrading must have destroyed something though, because now none of the encryptions are working anymore.
If anyone has any idea on what I could do to solve this issue, that would be appreciated. Should I try to hard reset both base stations? Maybe that would do the trick?
Also, could it be that I may have copied old files with the migration assistant that belong to the PowerPC Airport drivers? Maybe that is messing things up. Anyway, have no clue.
All in all, I am happy with my Airport network, but not being able to have encryption worries me a bit. Also the speed leaves room for improvement. I have never seen my Airport network go faster than 12 Mb/s (of a theoretical 54Mb/s ... wow).
Anyway.. just thought I would throw this out there and see if someone has anything to contribute.
Mac Book Pro C2D 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhone needs a cam in the front

I feel your pain. Started logging on this morning with our computers (once we got power back on from a broken pipe) and man is it a mess. My wifes MacBook Pro wont remember our ABES network, nor will it show up. If we select other from the drop down airport icon and manually type in the name and password it is fine until we shut it down or restart it.
Unfortunately, my daughters newer iBook G4 cant even find our network, however, it will find other networks floating around the neigborhood. Go figure!
My sons snow G3 iMac this morning is having the same problem as my daughters laptop.
Our G4 iMac has no problem at all getting on the network and/or remembering it and automatically connecting to it when restarted/shutdown.
My Toshiba M35 laptop cant find the network but will find others and connect to them.
My 2 Dell Inspiron 5100 (one with an internal and another with a Belkin PCMCIA wireless) both connected to the base stattion with no problems.
Now, isnt that weird or what? We have soft reset the AEBS several times as well as hard reset with the same results as above. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sean
P.S. This is after we have been running the current network/setup for about a year with no hiccups. Got to love apple and its firmware upgrades!

  • Apple TV (v2) and movie rentals - my experiences, for what it's worth...

I’ve been reading a lot of posts over the past couple of days about problems streaming rented movies, and thought i’d share my experiences as i’ve had a couple of days of head scratching and frustration trying to watch one of my own:
I unwrapped an Apple TV v2 at the weekend, which was a gift form a friend, and tried it out by renting a movie. This was yesterday:
Now I’m a Virgin media customer in the UK, with 10MB broadband (wired), which I figured would be fast enough to easily stream HD video - and sure enough my rental started up and played fine. For about 30 mins...
After this it froze, and gave me the dreaded ‘loading’ dialogue, which showed 7 hours as my wait, and it got longer as the day went on - not shorter.
I gave up, and decided to come back to it later, which of course was a foolish move, as everything that had been buffered was erased and i was back at square one.
I then tried again today and had the exact same problem. After turning on, and being pleasantly surprised to see that my HD rental began streaming perfectly with almost no delay, I was again kicked off after about half an hour.
So i decided to look at my ISP’s terms and conditions, and sure enough there are cap’s on my data traffic of 1.5gb during the day, and 750mb in the evening (until 9pm). Exceed either of these and your traffic speed is cut back by 75% for 5 hours.
So i did some digging, and found that the average HD movie file size is about 4gb. This means that it’s impossible for me to stream and watch a film in one sitting, as i’ll never have enough uncapped bandwidth to stream the whole movie in one hit.
Now some folks have talked about getting ahead of the game, and beginning a download ahead of time (like first thing in the morning) so that by the evening a film is waiting for you no matter how long the download time. But even if this works, you run the risk of losing the buffered file by hitting the wrong button on your apple remote. This to me is unacceptable.
So lets drill down to the details here:
Problem 1: the manner Apple TV v2 stores video. I’m no technical expert, but understand that the latest Apple TV has no hard drive - rather an 8GB flash drive. This would be enough to download and store an HD movie as a semi-permanent file, but Apple TV v2 doesn’t do this - it just uses it as a streaming buffer, which is cleared out periodically, and is easy to accidentally lose.
Problem 2: my ISP just won’t allow the amount of data transfer required to stream an HD movie without capping my download speed. Not between 9am and 9pm anyway (i’m going to see if i can stream the end of my film later without the beggars cutting me off).
Problem 2a (more of a gripe): Apple TV doesn’t warn you that the file you’re about to stream when you rent a movie will very likely trigger your ISP’s bandwidth throttling policy. It might be in their small print, but it should be there in big letters at the point of sale, just before you hit ‘buy’.
The Solution: There isn’t a satisfactory one for me really. I don’t imagine I’ll be renting any more movies directly from Apple TV. It’s too pricey to take the risk that I won’t be able to watch it, so back to DVD for me.
Now I could rent or buy through iTunes, and then stream to Apple TV, as at least I’d have a ‘hard copy’ of the movie on my MacBook and would be safe in the knowledge that once i had downloaded the file i could watch it from start to finish without interruption - but this is also less than ideal. I can’t get HD movies from iTunes, i’d have to go through the ‘planning ahead’ phase of starting downloading early in the day, and there’s still no guarantee it wouldn’t trigger the bandwidth throttling if it was a long movie.
The only other solution would be to max out my broadband package, although currently the most expensive package (which costs double what i pay now) still had a 3.5gb cap, so could kick me off just as i’m near the end of the film. Plus, i don’t watch that many films to make the expense worthwhile.
    To wrap up...
If you’re on a decent broadband connection that in theory should be able to handle HD streaming then check your ISP’s regs regarding throttling. Even with throttling on, YouTube, iPlayer and other similar sites still worked for me, as they’ll happily cope with reduced transfer speeds. Apple movie rentals won’t. This might explain why some can use these services perfectly at the same time as being unable to view their rental.
If you’re an occasional film watcher in a similar position to me, don’t bother with movie rentals. Unless you’re on an uncapped, unthrottled broadband package it’s unlikely you’ll be able to stream an HD movie in one hit due to the file size.
Back to Blockbuster Video for me i’m afraid. At least until we get NetFlix in the UK
Hope you have more luck than I did,
    McGinty

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • What it's worth (for what it's worth).

    Folks,
I bought an iPhone for $600 because it was worth more than that to me. Now it's $400, but to me? I can't live without it. I use it every single day--starting when I first wake up, finishing when I go to sleep. And I can't imagine I'm alone.
The US dollar was worth a Euro five years ago--now it's worth 3/4 that. None of us can get a refund, and the longer one waits to spend our money, the lower the value will be in Gold, Silver, and certainly Oil. But gadgets? One expects not. It's not a commodity.
Another consideration is that Apple is in the business of selling Macs, iPhones, and iPods, and whomever wanted the newest and greatest (myself included) paid $600--and would have thought it was worth double that if Apple had distribution problems. But everyone knew even before it was launched it was expensive--but had we ever seen anything like it? No.
But Apple sold out the first round as fast as they could without causing widespread distribution problems--something Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have never managed with new hardware--then, once the water cleared a little, dropped the price for the holidays. Yay! Early adopters have done their business, and now it's time for our friends and family. It's gift giving time.
Apple's primary consideration is their shareholders, and that's where this move makes the most sense. The hardcore acted first--some waiting in long lines, even. Now that the smoke has cleared and the novelty has faded, they are discounting the price. Far from being a sign of greed, it is a sign they desire that they continue to grow. As it should be.
Lastly: I haven't bought an Intel Mac yet, but I plan on it, and when I do, I expect it to be the same price as it is now or cheaper: not more expensive. The same goes for the iPhone G2, just as it has with my G4s, G3s, G1 Power-Macs and earlier. That's how it works folks. Competition gets more fierce, the price goes down, and ultimately all we are left with is a product. In this case, and iPhone. And is it any less awesome than it was on day 1? No.

  • For what it's worth Steve, I have to give you some credit.

Watching the press conference yesterday I did seem to notice that Steve was a testy at times, but who among us would have held our tongue any better after a month of trying to come up with a solution, directing the company experts to find a fix, fielding questions, and on and on and on.
Where I have to give you credit is that what other CEO would voluntarily put themselves on a stage like a duck in a shooting gallery and have reporter take pot shots at them? MS puts out a bad product and people just stop buying it. Nobody holds Bill G personally responsible. But because Steve J will stand up and be seen he has to take all the crap with the credit.

Based on those figures i actually think apple are being generous providing everyone with a free case (obviously they are only doing it for good pr, but even so, its going to cost them a fortune)
This I'm going to have to disagree with you on -- and it's not as if they're mailing a free case to each of the 3 million purchasers of the phone. They'll probably end up sending free cases to between 1% and 20% of the installed base. Even if it's 20%, and even if they sell 2 million more iPhones in the next three months before the offer ends, that's only 1 million cases.
Apple sells the bumper for $29, but best estimates as to its marginal cost are in the $2 to $3 range. So that's somewhere on the order of $3 million in materials costs, plus let's be insanely generous and say $3 million in G&A costs and shipping.
$6 million may seem a fortune to you and me, but it's nothing to a multi-billion dollar multinational.

  • For What It's Worth- Chomping on the bit category

On Scott Bourne's most recent podcast (Photofocus-episode 29) he mentioned Aperture 3 is in beta and he declined to be a tester. He made no comment on release date or any other fun tidbits of info. The comment is not in the show notes but on the broadcast.
    BobM

I wonder if there is a set time period that result in free upgrades, if there is such a thing? I've been trying Aperture and my trial period is about over. I'd hate to buy now and then have to pay $99 to upgrade in six weeks. I think I'll wait since I don't HAVE to have it.

What is the best Safari Version for OS 19.9.5 Maverick on a MacBook Pro. 2.4 Ghz, with 8 gb memory?

The best version for Mavericks, in fact the only version, is an integral part of OS X. In other words you already have it.
    Its version number is 7.1.5.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled twice to no avail.  Is there a fix? Also, when I tried to update, it comes up with this error.

I have a similar problem. I found out that my macbook air created a new USER with my former's computer user name. You can check that by going into System Preferences -> User & Groups, and see if a "Other user" has been created. You have to login under this new USER to find your transferred contacts in the address book.
My problem is that I do not know how to merge the 2 USER logins or transfer the data from the new USER created into the existing one.

  • What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

None. The browser installed with 10.5.8 is the last for that version of OS X. To upgrade Safari you need to upgrade OS X:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?

Try restarting it. If this does not work, then hard restart it which is holding the power and home button until the product ***** off. If this does not help either, plug it into the computer and restore it. Make sure you back up the device before you restore it though! Here are instructions on how to restore and back up an apple device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

  • After inadvertently deleting Safari, I reinstalled all applications, but iphoto still won't work

After inadvertently deleting Safari, I reinstalled all applications, and all returned to full fucntion except for iPhoto.  Although the iPhoto icon appears in the dock, and despite my also having successfully downloaded the most current version of iPhoto via "Software Update, now when I open iPhoto, I get a window stating that I can’t open my "current photo library using this version of iPhoto."  The window also advises as follows: "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?"  However, despite tha apparetnly two options stated in the window--quitting or creating a new library, the only thing I can do at that point is "Quit," which closes iPhoto. When I reopen it, I enter the endless loop of window notifications documented above.  What can I do, if anything, to render iPhoto functional with regard to the photos I had saved to it before I had to reinstall all of the applications on my iMac?  Alternatively, are those photos lost forever?  Please advise.

It's hard to say for sure, because we do not know what version you had or have now.
You should have to pay again if you already paid for an iPhoto upgrade at one time or another. All you should have to do go to the App Store select Purchases and reinstall that version of iPhoto.
If you did not Purchase an iPhoto upgrade from the App Store, then you will need to look and see what version of iPhoto you have (6, 8 or 9) and then as Carolyn suggests update it with the latest update for that version.
    see > Apple - Support - Downloads
FWIW, I do believe that iPhoto 9.2.3 is the latest version of iPhoto 11 that will run in 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
