Forbidden sign on start-up.

Hi everyone!
When my powerbook starts up, it arrives to the apple logo with the spinning sign. But after a while, the apple logo changes to a forbidden sign!!! What does it mean ?
So I thought it is the hd problem. So I remove it. But the forbidden sign goes back.
I think booting from CD, the machine should read the disk utility even is Hd is removed. Removing the HD should not change the CD start-up process , no ? it is safe I think.
Thanks in advance.
Alain
Powerbook Ti 400   Mac OS X (10.4)

Here's Apple's info on the problem, you can try following the links:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805
With the HD installed, try doing a "safe boot", by holding the shift key down until the login screen appears. If it works, do a normal restart and report back with the results.

    You're Again Welcome juanelo!
"...install the Jaguar cd from Classic-9.2.2..."
So you were booted into OS 9.2.2, not running Classic through OS X, right?
Running Classic, is different than starting up in OS 9.2.2.
    "...updatint the firmware."
Did you download and install, the Firmware Update, that was previously linked to?
And you did that, after you installed Jaguar 10.2.x?
"...using to upgrade to Panther the Install Cd,"
Do the discs look exactly like THESE, and do not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them?

Are you sure this is compatible, working RAM, and is it new, or used?

  • Mountain Lion unable to start forbidden sign Harddrive problem

    Hi guys,
so I have a MacBook Pro 17" with the newest Mountain Lion update and Bootcamp Windows 7. When I start the Mac, Mountain Lion shows me the forbidden sign, while still having this loading sign working but nothing happens and Windows shows me the bluescreen with the error code: "0x0000007B"
When I try to start the recovery in OS X the same happens (nothing...) and in Windows recovery the mouse and keyboard suddenly stop working so that I can't do anything. Additional to that I figured out that Windows has a problem with CLASSPNP.sys meaning that the problem lies in the hard drive. Now my question is since the mouse and keyboard stop working in Windows how can I reinstall the drivers in OS X?

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

  • Mac Pro + 10.6.8 - gray screen with a forbidden sign & "still waiting for root device"

    Hi everyone,
I've a Mac Pro Early 2008 Dual Xeon which runs 10.6.8  version of OS X (Snow Leopard)
After a recent reboot the system won't come up, it just hangs displaying a gray screen with a forbidden sign instead and the gray spinner spinning forever...
    I have tried: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    1) Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables ---> nothing
    2) Perform a Safe Boot ---> I got this screen
    3) Reset the NVRAM / PRAM ---> Nothing
    4) Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility
I have tried to boot from both installed SuperDrive holding the C key, but nothing! The Mac doesn't start from CD (very strange!!!)
    5) Check your cables and power source
    They are OK, but nothing!
    6) Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware
    No third-party RAM is installed...
    7) Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X or
Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X as a last resort
I can't boot from installation disc....
    Any other idea?

Guessing that your hard drive has left the building or your OS X system has. I would start by replacing OS X, if you can:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Power Mac G5 Showing Prohibitory Sign on Start Up?

Earlier this week my Power Mac G5 1.8 ghz dual started to show a prohibitory sign on start up. The hard drive was original to the machine (from 2004) and I wanted to upgrade it to a larger size anyhow, so I put in a new hard drive thinking that might solve the problem and give me an upgrade at the same time.
After I installed the new hard drive, I formatted it and did a restore from Time Machine of my system. When I restarted, I got the prohibitory sign again. I restarted holding down the option key to see if it found the new drive and it did. So I selected the new drive and it started up from the new drive with my restored system on it with no problem. Then I went to system preferences and made sure the new hard drive was selected as my start up disk. On restart, I got the prohibitory sign again.
Then the weirdness started. On subsequent restarts, I get the prohibitory sign intermitently whether I'm starting from the hard drive, my Leopard installation DVD, my Disk Warrior boot disk, or my old Panther installation disk. It seems to boot without any problem from the Apple Hardware test CD. I've run the extended apple hardware test and it didn't find any problems. Most of the time, I get a prohibitory sign no matter how I'm trying to boot up, but sometimes it will boot from the Leopard installation disk or the hard drive, but when it does, it freezes after running for a few minutes. I've tried swapping out the memory sticks and it's made no difference.
Is it possible this is a software problem and not a problem with the motherboard or other hardware? I sure hope so, because I love this machine. Anyone have any suggestions about what I might try next? I've read about the "hair dryer" solution, but if Apple Hardware Test didn't find any probemms with the memory or motherboard, could that still be a solution?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Thanks, japamac. Yep, I should have said I replaced the old hard drive with the new one. So, it now only has the one, new fresh hard drive. The new drive is a WD Caviar Blue 320gb.
I set the jumpers on the new drive for 5-6 to slow the new drive down to 1.5. I've also tried resetting the PRAM several times, and tried restarting in safe mode. Every few tries I can get it to boot from the hard drive or a boot DVD/CD (maybe once every 10 tries), but it freezes up after running for about 10 minutes. The only instance this doesn't happen is if I boot with the Apple Hardware Test CD. It didn't freeze up during the 2 hours it took to run the extended test.
Thanks for trying to help me.

  • When opening my MBP, all that shows is the apple logo and the forbidden sign

    Hello everyone,
    So I'm on a 2011 MPB using 10.9.5.
I've closed it after using two nights ago, and when I came back home the day after and tried opening it, all that appeared was an alternation between the apple logo and the forbidden sign (here it is : http://stickeramoi.com/3447-3369-large/autocollant-panneau-interdit-interdiction .jpg)
I've tried repairing the disk but that failed.
Tried also re-installing OS X on it but that took about 17 hours (which is ridiculous) so I've cancelled that and instead, tried restoring a Time Machine save.
After it finished restoring the latest backup, I'm still faced with the same problem. It just won't boot.
Thank you for your time and help,

Yeah well I think I've tried about everything that I found out there.
From console commands to installing Lion through Internet recovery...That's it, I give up
Will take it for replacement tomorrow.
    Thank you

On other PC all is working.

I created a Playlist to my iphone using the musics already on it and the next try i could add new files to this playlist (and to the iphone) but if I try to add it the way I used to do (directly to the iphone) I still get the prohibited symbol.
This is ok, since I can use it the way I want (so far, i didn´t try yet to add other files like PDF or CBR files) and find a way to add the files i want, but I cannot help to think how wierd this is...
I just don´t like the way apple choosed to make possible transfer files to my device. I really like my iphone but my friends with Nokia and Android have an easier life on that matter...

  • Installed new hdd in MacBook Air 2008, question folder and forbidden sign in screen, what to do?

    Hello
I installed new hard drive to my MacBook Air 2008 and when I try to install lion/snow leopard/ mavericks it won't show up the disk. I can't find the hard drive.
I don't now what to do. I tried everything. I spoke with a guy in macsupport here in Sweden and he said I have to buy snow leopard and install it from the original dvd in order for computer to format. My computer is old like I said its from 2008. I've never update it or upgrade. This is first time. It laid in storage for three years so I decide it to use it again but hdd was damaged so I had to change it, and now all I get is flashing question folder and forbidden sign, you know the sign for auto traffic.
Is it true that the only way to restore or to find the new hdd or to boot the question mark and forbidden sign marks by installing osx from its original dvd or buy snow leopard?
After I spoke with the guy from Mac support, I got little suspicious so I spoke to another one and he told me all I need to do is format hdd with the help of a sata hdd cable with help of another macbook and then I was good to go.
    What do u think?
Should I buy snow leopard or can I burn it from my sister computer?

I first would try Target Disk Mode to format and install an OSX on the new storage drive.

You will need a OSX source that is compatible with the MBA.  If you have the original, use that.

  • Macbook pro crashing and now no entry sign on start up.

Please help!  I have a macbook pro with snow leapord, 2 years and no problems.  Since yesterday it has been crashing with sbbod and now I am just getting a no entry sign on start up and getting no further?  What do do???

You must back up first, if it's still possible, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Prohibited sign on start up and error when trying to re-install os x maverick. Help?

So I get the prohibited sign on start up, and i tried using the command-option-p-r and os x utilities popped up. I checked if any of my disks needed repairing and all of them were fine. But whenever I try to re-install os x mavericks an error would come up saying that I need to restart the application.
    Help anyone?

This is what I would try:
Since a 2008 MBP came with Leopard (10.5) and to install Lion (10.7)  or later requires a Snow Leopard disk (10.6), I would use one of those disks.  Again check the status of the HDD with Disk Utility>First Aid using the disk and install an OSX.  You will then have to download the Snow Leopard combo update (10.6.8).
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399?locale=en_US
You will have to erase the disk so have your data backed up,  Once you have established that you have a working OSX installed, then I would download Mavericks.
If you cannot install an OSX with the disks then there is a hardware problem and a trip to an Apple store genius bar will be the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Dual 1.25 - forbidden sign at bootup/PRAM

    Hello everyone,
I am the proud owner of a couple of MMD G4s (the Dual 1.25 & the Dual 1.42).
My dual 1.25 (fresh Leopard install from two weeks ago) is giving me the forbidden sign at startup.
I did use the Leopard Install DVD to repare all the authorizations but it didn't make any difference.
The good news is that if I restart the machine and do a single PRAM reset, the machine boots beautifully into 10.5.8.
However, I'm afraid of damaging the motherboard by always booting with a PRAM reset so I'd like to know if anyone has encountered this issue ?
(maybe the battery is too old ? It's a replacement Newer Tech from OWC from 2 years ago).
    Thanks !
    Pierre André.

Hi Pierre, it does sound like the Pram Battery, it's life of 4 or so years can be drastically shortened if ever the Mac is without AC power.
Try holding the Option/alt key down at bootup & select the boot drive to se if that works.

  • Satellite A300: Only one fingerprint sign at start up but two user accounts

    Hi
I have a Toshiba Satellite A300 Laptop which has the TrueSuite Access Manager software installed.
There are two accounts on the computer but I have been unable to work out how to get the two accounts to appear on the sign on screen, so that whoever wants to use their account can pick the correct sign on.
Currently there is only one fingerprint sign on appears at start up.
In order to get into the second account I have to click on "Switch user" and sign in with the password.
I feel certain that I should be able to set it up so that the choice of which account to sign on to is available at the beginning.
Could someone help me to sort this one out?
    Thanks very much...

    Hello
Maybe you must register the fingerprints with the second account too?
Im not an expert with the fingerprint software but maybe you must reinstall it?! Remove the old version, reboot the notebook, use CCleaner and install the new version.
Check the Toshiba website for an update:

I press the power button, the screen comes on with the apple logo and the scroll starts the screen the has many lines the grey sign comes on and says to start computer again and then the same thing happens

    Hi mate,
that whole story sounds really weirdo since after reading all this and knowing that youve tried almost everything doesnt makes it better.. :/
Usually I would say: update your BIOS, but you already updated everything. This problem could be BIOS related since the initialization of the hardware after a standby is controlled by the chipset trough the BIOS.
I guess it could also be something with the background light of the LCD screen (failed initialization after waking up), you can check this by reproducing the situation with the black screen and holding some light near the screen. If you can see some schemes on the screen (something like desktop, etc..) then it could be the background lighting. In such case try to reinstall the operating system and update all installed drivers to the newest version (yes I know, sounds like more pain).
Otherwise, click [HERE|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT], find the nearest authorized service partner in your country, contact them and ask them for a hardwarecheckup. Maybe its really a hardware related issue..
    Greets and good luck
